Traditionally occupational health and safety (OH&S) has been managed for the direct benefits of reducing injury and illness to workers on mine sites. In the current skill shortage climate it is important to recognise the value that OH&S management can have in assisting mines in minimising their exposure to this issue. In times of skills shortage turnover is high as mines poach personnel from each other. This leads to loss of corporate knowledge and loss in productivity through the need to train new personnel in mine-specific operating procedures. In addition absenteeism can significantly disrupt production as there may be no ready replacements available for key jobs. Pressure will be placed upon workers to remain at work even though they are not completely fit for work, leading to presenteeism and consequently loss in productivity. In addition to the threats to routine operation, the loss of management and professional staff can significantly increase catastrophic risk through loss of experience and corporate knowledge. There is increased pressure to focus on events that occur regularly in the here and the now and underestimate the rare, or unlikely, events.The theme of this paper is that by properly addressing OH&S management at mine sites, companies can minimise their exposure to these problems. Put simplistically, a safe and healthy mine is a sustainable and productive mine. Case studies and relevant literature will be used to support this premise.CITATION:Cliff, D and Bailey, K, 2012. This paper discusses the design, construction and performance of a 30 inch thick diaphragm wall recently constructed in Baltimore, Maryland at Inner Harbor East. The project site is an established marina and waterfront property. The geologic profile consists of fill, alluvial silt and clay, Potomac sand and clay, decomposed rock, and weathered rock on top of gneiss bedrock. The approximately 1,300 ft long perimeter diaphragm wall serves as a water cut-off, perimeter basement wall and support of excavation for the high rise project?s five levels of below-ground parking. Due to the fast track construction and the tight schedule, the initial design of the diaphragm wall was based on a limited amount of geotechnical information. Supplemental borings were then performed along the alignment of the wall to verify the design assumptions and wall depths. Additionally, the design criteria required that the wall be keyed into a competent stratum with low permeability. The Engineer of Record for the diaphragm wall, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) completed the design and produced accelerated construction documents allowing the developer to release the drawings early for bid. This paper describes the theoretical soil parameters used to develop the loads, moments, and shears for the design of the diaphragm wall and the temporary tieback anchors. It also discusses the refinement of these soil parameters using the observed wall displacements and tieback pre-stressing forces as a baseline. This paper compares the calibrated parameters to the values used in the design of the wall. It explains how the soil structure interaction model was developed and the soil parameters calibrated using PLAXIS 2D non-linear finite element software. The paper also discusses the use of the proprietary CWS joint by Soletanche/Inquip JV as end stop between consecutive wall panels and the unique top-down construction utilized to support the diaphragm wall at the Southeast double re-entrant corner.

In a cooperative research effort, the US Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Co. investigated floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground coal mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with underground openings, causing roof and pillar problems. The floor and roof analysis techniques that were used in the USBM/Pittston investigation may have a wide range of applicability in the mining industry. Recommended orientations and geometries for mining operations are directed at floor problems, but may also enhance roof stability.

Pall has developed and supplied to several airlines cabin air libers to provide clean air for passengers and crew in flight, while reducing airline operating costs. Most of today's modern commercial passenger aircrafts employ cabin air recirculation as a means of reducing operating costs. With large numbers of passengers being subject to an increasing proportion of recirculated air for hours at a time, the matter of cabin air quality, with particular respect to the health effects on passengers and crew, has to be addressed. Commercial pressure will ensure that the airlines and aircraft manufacturers will not revert back to the total fresh air systems of the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, feasibility studies are already being undertaken to look at increasing the proportion of recirculated air to 80% and above. With the application of specialist nitration technologies. Pall is able to ensure that the requirements for economy are met whilst ensuring that the air is effectively rendered as 'fresh air’ each time it is recirculated.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a influência dos diversos aglomerantes nas propiedades mecânicas e no processo de redu?ão das pelotas auto-redutoras de cromita com o objetivo de obter uma boa resistência mecânica a quente, medidas após serem submetidas às temperaturas de 1173, 1273, 1373, 1473 e 1573K. Os aglomerantes ensaiados foram: bentonita, cal hidratada, melaço, carboxi-metil-celulose (CMC) e silicato de sódio. Inicialmente os materiais (cromita, ferro-silício, coque de petróleo e aglomerantes), foram caracterizados por análise química e granulométrica. Após isto, os materiais, foram aglomerados na forma de pelotas (P1 a P15), contendo teores variáveis de aglomerantes. Após a fabricação das pelotas, procedeu-se aos ensaios de laboratório; medindo-se a resistência a compressão da pelota verde, ao longo do tempo (por 28 dias), da pelota seca e após os ensaios de ciclos térmicos. Foram realizados também ensaios de crepitação e avaliação da redução à temperatura de 1773K. Após os ensaios ciclos térmicos e de redução, os produtos obtidos (escória e metal) foram analisados por MEV e EDS. A pelota P15 (4% de silicato de sódio como aglomerante) apresentou uma resistência a compressão, de pelota seca, de 5 kg-f/pelota, e após tratamento térmico às temperaturas de 1173 e 1273K, apresentou uma resistência a compressão de 15 e 15,5 kg-f/pelota, respectivamente. Nenhuma das pelotas ensaiadas apresentaram crepitação. A pelota P15 atingiu fração de reação unitária aos 10 minutos, a 1773K. Verificou-se também para estas condições a formação de escória, aos 3,5 minutos, prejudicando a reação CO/cromita.

Esse projeto visou a substituição do sistema de controle instalado por um padrão RUSSULA, sistema esse que controla um laminador de barras e de rolos de 500.000 toneladas/ano na Usina Presidente Vargas da CSN em Volta Redonda, RJ/Brasil. Juntamente com o sistema de controle, RUSSULA forneceu um novo posto de operação para a cabine central, com novas telas de operação, sendo um posto “touch”. Equipado com controladores Siemens S7-400, IHM Wonderware InTouch, acionamentos ABB ACS800 e DCS800, o sistema se apresentava ineficaz, exigindo a otimização do processo, aumento de produtividade, diminuição de paradas, diminuição de perdas metálicas e maior confiabilidade no controle, o último através das ferramentas RUSSULA implementadas no software, como por exemplo detecção automática de sucata, controle de tração, controle de laço, rastreamento do material no laminador, otimização de corte das tesouras e barra fantasma.

The prospect of discrete element modelling (DEM) being used as an everyday design tool for transfer chutes in the iron ore mining industry is becoming more and more probable. However, much care needs to be taken to ensure accurate results are obtained. Whilst there are many publications in industry portraying the potential of DEM, there is little evidence of where it has been validated against a real set of experimental results. The purpose of this investigation was to gauge whether the incorporation of the physical properties of a specific bulk material at the DEM pre-processing stage can yield visually and numerically accurate simulations for a simple flow case. Effects such as irregular particle shapes, varying frictional properties and coefficients of restitution, all found through experimentation were investigated. Video analysis was used to compare simulations to real flow cases. It was found the most critical attributes in determining the accuracy of the simulations were particle shape and wall friction. Keeping the particle-to-wall friction factor constant was not sufficient to describe the flow accurately. But by introducing the varying effects of wall friction with consolidation stress, the correct results were simulated.

Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the ninth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township map. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

A produção de aço com baixo teor de enxofre é de extrema importância para a indústria naval e de tubos para a indústria de petróleo. Porém, a fabricação destes aços acarreta um maior desgaste do revestimento refratário das panelas de transporte/tratamento de aço das aciarias devido às condições operacionais mais severas (maiores tempos de processo, maiores temperaturas, adições de fluxantes de escória, etc.) exigidas durante o processamento destes aços. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelamento estatístico do impacto da fabricação deste tipo de aço, via rota de tratamento metalúrgico de dessulfuração de aço, na campanha refrataria (vida) das panelas conjuntamente com a análise post-mortem de tijolos refratários da linha de escória de uma das panelas. O modelamento levou em consideração os dados de 6 meses de operação da aciaria de uma usina integrada com capacidade de 4,5 Mt/ano. A análise dos resultados revelou que os altos tempos de tratamento no refino secundário, especialmente utilizando o forno panela como equipamento de dessulfuração, a adição de compostos fluxantes de escórias contendo sódio, como nefelina, são os principais fatores que degradam a vida do refratário de tais panelas. Foram realizados testes industriais com cerca de uma tonelada de pó fluxante com teor de flúor da ordem de 1,0%, denominado ultrabaixo teor de flúor (UBF). O testes foram realizados em 29 corridas de aços com baixo teor de carbono acalmados ao alumínio (AA BC) na Aciaria 2 da Usiminas em Ipatinga. Ao longo do processamento industrial, os dados operacionais foram analisados, coletadas amostras para avaliação das propriedades físico-químicas da escória líquida e as válvulas submersas foram separadas para medir a taxa de desgaste. Tanto as caracterizações realizadas quanto o desempenho industrial evidenciaram que as propriedades relativas à taxa de fusão, lubrificação e cristalização estão de acordo com as necessidades operacionais para a produção de aços AA BC. Por fim, os resultados de desgaste da válvula submersa mostram um ganho significativo com o uso do pó fluxante UBF. A taxa média de desgaste foi aproximadamente 40% inferior à obtida com o uso do pó fluxante comercial (teor de flúor na ordem de 7,5%).

Essa pesquisa visa confirmar a hipótese de desenvolver e treinar uma rede neural capaz de identificar padrões de planicidade de bobinas laminadas no Laminador de Tiras a Frio#3 da CSN, propiciando o aumento do padrão de qualidade, inovação tecnológica e ganhos econômicos. A metodologia aplicada para alcançar os resultados almejados baseou-se em experimentos realizados com informações de bobinas reais, sendo utilizados softwares distintos para o desenvolvimento do projeto, validando os resultados obtidos através de análises de desempenho, com a correlação entre respostas conhecidas e as obtidas com a utilização da rede neural, assim como, a análise do erro médio quadrático das respostas obtidas com a aplicação, sendo simulados na etapa de treinamento da rede neural ou verificados experimentalmente com a execução da ferramenta desenvolvida.

Japan was a closed society until 1853 when it was forced to open to the West. Mining, metallurgical, and geological education started there around 1861 when a graduate from Yale University in USA went to Japan to organize the first School of Mines. This was followed by other metallurgists from Great Britain, France, and Germany and thousands from other disciplines. The present report is a summary of the writer's first contact with Japanese metallurgists and his visits to a number of universities and research institutions in the past years.

"To minimise mine shaft maintenance over the long-term, some potash mine shaft sinking projects have required the provision of a continuous fully welded waterproof steel liner over a substantial depth to achieve zero water ingress. This brings many challenges, including the implementation of a bottom-up construction sequence incorporating extensive waterproof welding and how to ensure the integrity of the welded liner when subject to substantial temperature fluctuations that are likely to occur with a composite steel-concrete liner placed within an artificially frozen shaft excavation. This paper highlights the key challenges and discusses multiple mitigation measures including vertical shaft movement joints and a combined structural-thermal analysis approach. INTRODUCTION Whilst the application of combined steel and concrete shaft liners using a fully welded steel liner is not new and has been used in several previous projects, most notably at Lanigan (Storck, 1968 & Roesner, 1980), recently the need to provide a continuously welded steel waterproof liner for over 800 m length of shaft for a potash mine has been considered. The need for a fully continuous welded steel liner arises from the perceived benefits of providing a fully dry shaft environment to; increase the life expectancy of the shaft; reduce routine maintenance particularly combatting salt accretion and minimising wash down practices; and improve long-term ground stability by preventing salt dissolution. Whereas previous projects have employed discontinuous sections of steel liner, when a fully continuous liner is employed longitudinal shaft strains from thermal changes result in significant deformations that must be either explicitly accommodated or resisted. Note, these thermal vertical expansion forces are more than capable of lifting the shaft collar and head frame structures should they be fixed in place. Typically, shafts are designed to resist vertical forces (collar loads and self-weight) by creating mechanical interlock with the adjacent ground. In competent rock this occurs incrementally with the construction of the shaft liner, and occasional hitch/crib structures are constructed as intermediate foundations to guarantee the transfer of vertical forces at distinct horizons. Usually this means cribs are constructed at first rock head, above the station level, and at the sump, although sometimes additional cribs are formed when entering and exiting weak strata or when a change in shaft liner construction is required."

There has been disappointingly little development in the understanding of the behaviour of rock slopes in open pit mines over the past 30 years. The lack of development in general, and of robust, standardised approaches in particular, are surprising in view of the æultraÆ deep open pit mines that are being developed to depths in excess of 1000 m. Research has recently been carried out into the occurrence of zones of extension strain in open pit slopes. This showed that very large zones of extension strain can occur, and this finding represents a significant new aspect in slope stability that has not been considered before. The greatest magnitudes of extension strain occur near the toe of the slope, either in the slope itself, or in the floor of the pit. Results of the research will be presented for different slope heights, slope angles and horizontal to vertical in situ stress ratios. The magnitudes of the strains are considered to be large enough to result in fracturing of intact rock, and the fracture orientations predicted are adverse for slope stability. Fracturing that is extension in nature is common in competent, brittle rocks and often develops with some violence and little or no warning, producing easily measurable seismicity. In the slope situation, the expected physical manifestation of this behaviour would be popping off of rock slabs and plates of rock from slope surfaces and popping up of the pit floor, as well as the formation of new fractures within the rock mass. Such behaviour may cause overall slope failure, or may initiate failure, which may then be driven to overall slope failure by other influencing factors or combinations of factors. In addition to instability resulting from the fracture surfaces themselves, all induced fracture surfaces could interact with natural geological structures to facilitate formation of a significant failure surface. Case studies of slope failure in two open pits will be described. In both cases failure occurred æsuddenlyÆ after very limited amounts of deformation. In the first, the slope crest moved suddenly upwards and backwards over a length of more than 200 m, with associated instability. In the second, the horizontal displacement of the slope face was almost an order of magnitude greater than the vertical displacement and occurred æsuddenlyÆ. A recently installed seismic system is detecting events in a significant zone behind the slope face. Both pits were in the 200 m to 300 m depth range at the time of the occurrences.

In this paper the results of an exploratory study conducted by personnel of the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory on 18.6, 22, and 40 wt pct uranium-zirconium alloy will be presented. LARGE power output and long life or endurance from small, compact nuclear reactors require the use of enriched uranium for a fuel material. However, the ability to remove heat from the element, the tolerable fission product concentration, or some physical limitation of the system can limit the allowable fuel enrichment, or the volume of the fuel. In such an event, the fuel-element designer must find a suitable diluent for the uranium. Zirconium is an attractive material for such a purpose as it has good nuclear properties and a low absorption cross section. Because it has a good corrosion resistance in water, zirconium is a suitable cladding and the uranium-zirconium alloy makes a good core material. The alloy has a high thermal conductivity, a low elastic modulus, and a low thermal-expansion coefficient, all of which tend to minimize the thermal stresses in the core. Furthermore, the unirradiated material is reasonably ductile and has adequate strength. DESCRIPTION OF SAMPLES Two types of cylindrical samples were used in this study 1) short, 1/2-to 1-in.-long samples to test the irradiation stability of the alloy and 2) 2-ft-long samples to investigate the resistance of an element to longitudinal deformation. Composite samples having 0.060-to 0.140-in. core diameters and clad with a 0.010-in. thick zirconium jacket were fabricated by coextrusion and by hydrostatic pressure bonding of the cladding to the preformed core material. Both fabrication processes produced the uniform metallurgical core-to-cladding bond which was felt necessary to minimize the uncertainty of the central core temperature. Both consumable-arc and induction-melting techniques were used to melt the uranium-sponge zirconium core alloy. Since a graphite crucible was used in induction-melting this alloy contained more carbon impurity, which resulted in a finer grain size than the arc-melted alloy. The core to cladding interface was uniform in elements coextruded from the fine-grain, induction-melted core material, while those elements fabricated using arc-melted core material had very irregular interfaces because of the coarser grain size. Both cold-worked and heat-treated fuel materials were irradiation tested. Cold-worked alloys were swaged to about a 5 pct final reduction in area without subsequent annealing. Design of embankment dams often requires seismic analyses, or an assessment of earthquakeinduced ground and dam movements. There are a large number of cases where earthquakes have triggered sliding and lateral spreading of embankments, resulting in excessive crest settlements. In some instances, liquefaction and embankment failure has occurred resulting in loss of containment. Hence, evaluation of the effects of earthquakes on embankment dams is a critical design aspect. This paper discusses the methods and the results of a seismic liquefaction assessment and deformation analyses of a tailings dam. The tailings dam consists of a perimeter earth core rockfill starter dam which has been raised using upstream construction methods. The embankment raises (formed by an upstream clay blanket and an all-in rockfill body) are constructed over the impounded tailings, which are potentially liquefiable. Extensive field and laboratory tests were undertaken to assess the liquefaction potential of the tailings, and also determine the material properties required for seismic stability and deformation analyses. Numerical modelling of seismic liquefaction and deformation was carried out using FLAC (Itasca 2016) to predict the magnitude and spatial variation of deformations that may lead to an uncontrolled release of tailings. Primarily based on a parametric assessment of UBCSand and Finn-Byrne constitutive models, the results of the analyses are presented and compared for evaluation.

This paper presents the evolution of the planning, scheduling and mining practices at the Yilgarn Star underground. The paper will concentrate on the principals of æjust in timeÆ and the impact of such practices on mine planning and scheduling and subsequent development and production. The principals of æjust in timeÆ were developed to minimise the impact of creep and time dependent failure of the ground in the ore and hangingwall zones. These zones are characterised by altered schistose material with inherent weak rock strengths compounded, at depth, by the maximum principal stress of the virgin stress field approaching the UCS of the rock mass. Yilgarn Star underground has and continues to develop the æjust in timeÆ methodology to ensure the continued viability of the mine. The mine continues to use longhole open stoping mining methods to ensure high levels of productivity with minimal dilution and at an acceptable cost of production.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1993 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. For the continent as a whole, world shares of most commodities showed little change from those of 1992 although most output volumes showed a slight decline. There were no significant production increases, but there were significant decreases of cobalt and copper because of political instability in Zaire and production problems in Zambia, of chromite resulting from cutbacks in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and of phosphate rock owing to a lower output by producers in general. (See tables 1 and 2.) Among the most significant mineral commodities produced in Africa, ranked by portion of world production in 1993, were diamond, cobalt, chromite, gold, phosphate rock, manganese ore, uranium and petroleum. Others of importance in world trade were andalusite, antimony, asbestos, bauxite, coal, copper, fluorspar, lithium minerals, platinum-group metals (PGM), titanium minerals (ilmenite and rutile), vanadium, vermiculite, and zircon. Several of these-chromite cobalt, diamond, and manganese-were not produced in the United States.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi a obtenção de microestruturas diferenciadas, em um aço baixo carbono com microadição de Molibdênio e Nióbio laminado a quente, após submetê-lo a diferentes meios de resfriamento antes e após a temperatura de interrupção de 600°C (que simulava a temperatura de bobinamento). A evolução microestrutural e mecânica foi avaliada com o auxílio de técnicas de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura, testes de dureza Vickers e tração uniaxial, somado a determinação das temperaturas de transformação de fase em um analisador termomecânico (TMA). De acordo com os resultados, meios de resfriamentos mais severos foram mais efetivos em proporcionar um aumento da resistência mecânica associado a decréscimo da ductilidade pela formação de fases mais dura e aumento da acicularidade da ferrita.
