"XPotential Products Inc. has developed technologies to convert auto shredder residues and other forms of plastic waste into useful products such as posts suitable for retaining walls and parking curbs. The technology is competitive provided low-cost plastic waste is available, and could have applications throughout the world. The paper describes the technology used and illustrates the various processing steps. Development of the TechnologyPresently, state-of-the-art auto shredding yields approximately 75% ferrous and non-ferrous metals and approximately 25% by weight of auto shredder residue (ASR). Advances in metal shredding and non-ferrous metal separation technologies turned XPotential Products Inc.’s attention to ASR as a potential revenue source, or at least a means to markedly reduce the cost of disposal. This abundance of nuisance ASR was, in the company’s view, a potential resource as derelict autos and white goods were similarly perceived 40 years ago. As owners of General Scrap & Car Shredder Ltd. in western Canada, XPotential faced significant disposal costs for four shredders. This journey began over 10 years ago and took many twists and turns until a final course of action was chosen. The recovery of the metallic portion of vehicles and white goods has reached technological maturity and attempts to add value are now achievable only in very small increments."

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

Appraisal of industrial minerals beneath privately owned land requires a different approach and mindset from valuation of base and precious metals or energy minerals, and from valuation of government-owned mineral lands. First, is it the value of inground minerals or of mining rights that is being sought? Second, value to whom, the mining company, a potential investor, the mineral landowner, a lending institution, the property tax assessor, or a condemnor? Third, how should mineral value be apportioned between the land and mineral owner, and a mining company with limited years of lease-hold interest? These and many other questions must be addressed before a valuation method and Discount Rate are selected. For various reasons the Income Method is most often used, with Net Present Value calculations made for long term predicted mining income. Choice of an appropriate Discount Rate is critical.

The great majority of shafts constructed today are still excavated by drilling and blasting, a method which changed very little in over 100 years until the introduction of the mechanical lashing unit and cactus grab by the South Africans, which enabled muck to be removed as fast as massive hoisting systems could handle it and resulted in very rapid rates of sinking. Record breaking month's performances were achieved at -Hartebeestfontein No. 4 shaft, October 1960-337.1 m; Western Reefs No. 4 shaft, October 1961-340.7 m; and Buffelsfontein eastern twin shaft, March 1962-381.2m. The method was very labor-intensive, requiring a crew of over 60 workers at the shaft bottom during the drill cycle. Safety precautions were strict, but in the drive to achieve rapid advance, cases of personal injury were still somewhat high because of the large number of people engaged in this potentially hostile environment. The South African method, as it came to be referred to throughout the rest of the world, was adopted in the United Kingdom in the late 1950s in a modified form with greatly reduced manpower and nonsimultaneous sinking and lining, which was insisted on by the British Mines Inspectorate. In that instance, it was successfully used to sink the 7.3-m-diam concrete-lined shafts at Kellingley to 770 m depth, with rates of advance of over 90 m/month achieved, a British record at that time. During the sinking of the 1.15-km-deep twin shafts at Boulby potash mine in the UK in 1970, the method was again used, but for the first time ever in Britain exemptions from the mining code permitted the use of crash beams, crash doors, jack catches, and semi-simultaneous sinking and lining techniques. New British shaft sinking records of over 120 m/month were achieved in both shafts. Similar equipment and techniques were used in the early 1970s to sink several deep shafts in Canada, notably Creighton #7 and the Con zinc mine at Yellowknife in the NW Territories. Today, this equipment is standard for deep shafts in the US and the rest of the world. However, with the tremendous escalation in mining labor costs, the impact of health and safety legislation, and environmental regulations, coupled with a very real shortage of miners willing to work in this exposed situation it was apparent that an alternative to the labor-intensive conventional method of shaft construction had to be found. Recognizing the trend is inevitable, one or two major German shaft sinking contracting firms began to take a fresh look at full face boring techniques applied to tunnels and raise bored shafts. The results were most encouraging. Tunnel drivage techniques using moles had developed considerably from Colonel Beaumont's original channel tunnel machine circa 1880 to the superbly engineered Priestley machine selected to cut the British side in 1975 and the double shielded Robbins Grandori borer on the French side of the English Channel. Full face tunnel machines were being successfully used to drive uphill in inclined shafts in Austria and Switzerland. At Mapprag in Switzerland, the Demag mole drove the first (intentional) vertical transition and curve, and then went on to successfully complete the 730-m-long penstock shaft at an inclination of 35°. In Austria, the Wirth mole drove the Kaprun Glacier ski-lift railcar tunnel at record breaking rates of 457 m/MONTH (best 30 m/d) through green schist at an inclination of 29° for a distance of 3.35 km while the Hydro tunnel at Sarrelli in Switzerland was being driven by the Robbin's mole at an inclination of 35°. Simultaneously, extremely promising results were obtained using large assemblies of cutter discs on raise borer heads, such as the 4.87-m-diam X 460-m-deep shaft raised by Teton for Jim Walter Resources Inc. Bearing in mind that most mine shafts in the future (unless in exceptionally competent rock) will require some form of lining, and the trend will be toward deeper shafts as the more easily accessible mineral deposits become exhausted, it was seen that normal raise boring had definite limitations in vertical accuracy, in the limitation imposed by the drill string on the available torque that could be applied to the cutter head, and in the risk of collapse of the unsupported shaft rock wall in friable or jointed and fissured ground, since it is not possible to apply any form of temporary support until the permanent lining is being installed. A further problem was the economics of installing a subsequent lining, necessitating setting up a headgear and hoisting arrangement approaching in size that required for conventional drill and blast sinking and lining. Because of the economics, German contractors opted for a phased transition from drill and blast to the full face, rodless, out of the solid shaft mole, by starting off with a down-the-hole shaft boring machine -without a drillstring-but using a pilot hole to get rid of the muck.

"Metastable (Ti,Al)N coatings with fee structure have been shown to exhibit superior performance as compared to TiN under conditions of wear at elevated temperatures due to their better oxidation resistance and hardness. The oxidation resistance of these coatings increases significantly with increasing Al-content. However, the deposition of (Ti,Al)N films with Ti/ Al ratios below about 30/70 leads to a hexagonal structure which is not suitable for tribological coatings. Only little is known about the location of the cubic to hexagonal phase transition and hence about the optimum composition of (Ti,Al)N hard coatings.To determine the position of this transition, Tii-xAlxN films with different Ti/Al ratios were deposited on high speed steel at substrate temperatures between 100 and 700 °C by means of reactive MSIP. The composition of the films was determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the crystallographic structure by thin film X-ray diffraction (XRD).It could be shown that in case of deposition temperatures of 300-700 °C a two-phase region exists in the metastable TiN-AlN phase diagram, which expands with increasing temperature, wheras at 100 °C substrate temperature no two-phase region was observed. But in opposition to the phase diagram known from literature, which is based on thermodynamic estimations, the detected two-phase region is narrow for typical PVD temperatures, thus allowing the deposition of cubic single-phase Al-rich (Ti,Al)N hardcoatings for tribological applications. Based on these results, a new Ti1-xAlxN film with x = 0.62 has been developed, which showed an increase of oxidation resistance by a factor of 4."

"Tapping operations at ferroalloy smelters generate a significant amount of fume. Effective capture of fumes is required to meet the obligations of environmental, as well as occupational, legislation.A study was completed on an existing fume extraction system at a ferromanganese furnace tapping area. The area under consideration included the tap-hole, launder, and ladle area. The study consisted of site test work as well as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling to identify and evaluate solutions.Site test work and observations during furnace operation provided a baseline of system performance as well as input parameters for CFD modelling. Gas flow rates and energy contents from each extraction area were measured. Photographs and video footage were taken to evaluate areas of fume leakage.The CFD study was firstly validated against site observations to ensure the accuracy of input parameters. Thereafter several modification concepts were modelled and suitable combinations were investigated to ensure robust solutions. The following concepts were considered:•,Air curtains•,Ladle hood aspect ratio and position•,Increase of ladle extraction volume•,Extension of the length of the tapping garage structureThe paper presents the results of a performance test on a working ferromanganese tapping area fume extraction system and the results of CFD modelling as compared to site test results. Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

Spontaneous combustion of coal is a significant hazard in underground coal mines. It causes serious problems for miners for many years after the fact. It threatens workers? lives and causes economic losses for companies. It disrupts coal production and makes it necessary to abandon the main drift where the spontaneous combustion occurred. Coal fires have to be prevented before they occur; otherwise they are very hard to control. Precautions thus have to be taken in potentially risky areas. For coal to spontaneously combust, it needs 3 elements: fuel, oxygen and heat. If one of them is missing, the fire cannot occur. The best way to prevent spontaneous combustion is to prevent contact between coal and air. Coating of the coal surface with an air-proof lining material would be a practical and useful solution to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In the scope of this study, a lining material for coating the coal surface was designed at laboratory conditions. Lining material to be used for preventing coal fires should be airproof, cheap, sufficiently strong, have low rebound, be water- and heat-resistant, and easily obtained and applied. It should also be safe for human health when in contact with mine ventilation. By considering these obligations, 3 kinds of gypsum (plaster, satin plaster, molding plaster), as well as lime, cement and fly ash and different mixtures of these materials were applied in laboratory conditions to form a lining material. Samples of lining material were subjected to uniaxial compressive strength tests to determine their behavior against roof loads. Although there is no need to carry any roof load, the lining material has to be sufficiently strong to stay in place on the applied surface. If the lining material is broken, coal and oxygen can react again. Air permeability and curing time of the mixtures were also tested in laboratory conditions. Then the tested mixtures were applied on a wall with a pump to test the applicability of mixtures. After all tests were performed in laboratory, the most suitable mixture was determined as the optimal lining material to prevent coal fires.

The markets and environmental protection rules are more and more exacting, both of which have determined that copper smelters should look for technological development and global management to ensure their viability and competitivity in the short and long term. The main facilities of the present and future Smelting-Converting Process at Codelco's Caletones Smelter, is based on Teniente Converter reactors with a high operational availability that have reached concentrate processing capacities near 2,000 tpd. These reactors are in operation in most of the smelters in Chile as well as in Zambia, Peru, Mexico and, in ?the near future, in Thailand. Since 1993, the Smelting-Converting process of the Caletones Smelter of Codelco-Chile has been based on one Reverberatory furnace, two Teniente Converters and four Peirce-Smith Converters. These facilities, together with the operation of two Fluidized Bed Dryers, three Slag Cleaning Furnaces, and two Oxygen Plants have allowed the smelter to reach concentrate smelting capacities and copper productions of 1,215 kt/year and 360 kt/year, respectively. This transitional operating scheme, combining together traditional and advanced technological equipment, needs further modernization to successfully face the modern world challenges, especially with relation to the environmental commitment, production costs and wide satisfaction of customers. For this reason, for the period 1997-2000, a Modernization Plan has been worked out. This plan considers an increase of the present throughput, which will permit a significant increase in productivity, as well as finding a definitive solution for meeting the environmental regulations. Among these projects, we can point out the definitive shut down of the Reverberatory Furnace, which is a contaminating piece of equipment of low energetic efficiency. Additionally, it considers the installation of two new Slag Cleaning Furnaces, one additional Oxygen Plant, and the incorporation of two new Sulphuric Acid Plants with a production capacity of 4,500 T/D, that will recover over 92% of the sulphur content, of process off-gases.

"A unique pumped hydro storage facility using the ocean as a lower reservoir, combined with solar PV to create consistent, clean power will be presented: the Espejo de Tarapacá Project is comprised of a 300 MW seawater pumped storage hydroelectric plant using the Pacific Ocean as its lower reservoir and an existing natural concavity at the desert as its upper reservoir. The plant site is located in Chile’s northern coast 90 km south of Iquique. The site is characterized by a rocky shoreline and about 600 m of flat terrain moving inland, with an abundance of rock outcrops, after which there is a steep 700 m cliff. The power house and all waterways will be underground. The main focus is to present the rocks being expected in the underground works. As one of the actual most tectonically active regions of the world the seismic activity is particularly relevant and will be outlined in the presentation. INTRODUCTION Valhalla Energy is an independent Chilean-owned power development company. It focuses on the development, ownership and operation of renewable power projects. Valhalla was founded in 2011 with the goal of developing Chile’s natural renewable energy resources and strategically diversifies the country’s energy matrix away from an overdependence on imported fossil fuels. Valhalla began developing pumped storage hydro projects to provide scalable, clean, competitive, and reliable electricity by combining Chile’s superior solar resources with the country’s unique and extensive coastline suitable for storage.The capacity for renewable energy supply is driven by two distinct and unique natural characteristics found in northern Chile: (1) the abundant and reliable solar irradiation in the Atacama Desert and (2) a coastal site that benefits from a steep cliff and a natural concavity both within a relatively small land mass (see Figure 1). There are several potential sites in the northern part of the country that can be developed. The “Espejo de Tarapacá Project” is the first one to be built and subject of the present paper."

THE South African Mining and Engineering Journal recently pointed out that no satisfactory solution of the question of compensation for silicosis can be arrived at by placing further liability of an inequitable nature upon the mines. There are at present 35 scheduled mines liable to contribute to the annual levy of $800,000 and provide for the net outstanding liability of $6,400,000. Several of these mines have, as yet, not been able to set aside sufficient funds against their out- standing liability to the Compensation Fund. The gold producers declare that the gold mining industry today is passing its zenith, and that the production of gold will decline, with a consequent lessening of the spending power of the mines, which in about ten years will be reduced to a great extent unless encouragement is given for the opening of new mines. It is during this period of decline that the mines will be required to meet the large burden already created by miners' phthisis. In England the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1925, was extended to industries involving exposure to asbestos dust.

Successful management of mining operations depend on the accurate and reliable measurement of performance as a monitoring instrument in a feedback and control loop. However, when changes are being considered, the probable effect of the change on bottom line results requires different measuring techniques incorporating an in depth understanding which can identify hot spots in the operation which exhibit strong sensitivity to change. The CSIR's Division of Mining Technology has therefore been devoting a considerable effort to the establishment of techniques which enable changes to be analysed in terms of their impact on the two key parameters describing mine performance, i.e. profitability and safety. This paper describes these techniques, outlines their application to some example situations and discusses planned enhancements. The first section of the paper addresses the profitability model, and this is followed by a section considering the mine safety model.

Cerro Vanguardia is a known gold and silver deposit located in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. The mine has been in operation since 1998 and is thought to be one of the most important mines in Patagonia. More than 102 epithermal quartz veins have been identified in the area, with variable lengths, thicknesses, orientations and dips that constitute what is possibly one of the most extensive outcropping vein systems on earth. Veins are vertical and have variable depth. For this reason, the deposit is currently mined with a variety of extraction methods. This operation is made up of more than 60 open pits and 20 underground access ramps to exploit the deepest high grade narrow veins. This study is focused on the combination of underground exploitation with open pit blasting. That is, those production stopes in the upper levels of underground mines and their interaction with the damage levels in the final slope of open pit mines, as well as in the study of the impact of the generation of vibrations from the blasting of open pit mines and their influence on underground mines. Considering the current stage of the mine, after 20 years of operation, Cerro Vanguardia faces the need to mine deeper deposits in the face of increasing costs and declining grades. For this reason, it is essential to study the interaction of these exploitations. From a personnel safety point of view, this interaction must be well coordinated so as not to affect people and equipment. Likewise, the generation of vibrations due to blasting must be studied, which would produce new cracks, potentially generating overbreak and dilution. The main objective of this study is to determine the possible causes and influences of the blasting interaction in open pit and underground mines, seeking an optimization of the blasting process and a safety standard for personnel and equipment. To achieve these goals, this study includes a vibration monitoring plan to analyze the charge performance and determine rock constants. With the use of specialized software, damage modelling and simulations are used to determine values of damage in order to reduce overbreak. In addition, this plan contemplates the estimation of flyrock in blasting where underground work is connected to the surface, determining safety distances when carrying out a blast.

When designing structures in seismically active areas, foundations of critical structures are typically located away from known faults. Indeed many seismic codes prohibit construction in the immediate vicinity of seismically active faults establishing minimum setbacks from the faults. However, for long structures such as bridges, tunnels and pipelines, a fault maybe unavoidable, and fault rupture risk impossible to preclude. This paper presents a case study of a bridge foundation design that incorporates the consequences of fault deformations passing through the foundation. A series of site surveys were conducted to characterize the fault environment, and fault displacement hazard analyses were conducted to develop design displacement demands. Subsequently, numerical analyses were performed to evaluate the fault rupture-induced demands on a pier foundation in terms of displacements and rotations. Initially, analyses were performed that model the free field fault rupture propagation to the ground surface of the fault to ensure that the basic site characteristics are captured. Subsequently, the foundation elements were introduced in the model and the fault rupture is simulated again. The interaction and influence of the foundation on the fault rupture propagation is calculated, and the consequent demands and distortions of the foundation block provide a basis for structural engineers to design the bridge.

FeCo alloys play an important role in soft magnetic materials with a wide range of technological applications due to their high saturation magnetization and Curie temperature. However, these alloys have low ductility at room temperature. The ductility can be improved by the ternary addition of elements such as V. A density functional theory supercell approach was used to generate B2 Fe50Co50-xVx (0 ≤ x ≤ 50) structures and the properties were evaluated at different atomic percentage compositions to determine the ductility at room temperature. The structures were fully optimized to obtain better equilibrium ground-state properties such as lattice parameters and thermodynamic properties for both binary and ternary systems. The stability of Fe50Co50- xVx was evaluated from the heats of formation, elastic properties, and phonon dispersion curves. Furthermore, magnetic strength was evaluated from magnetic moments. It was found that all structures are thermodynamically stable due to the negative heats of formation. The calculated Pugh’s ratio and Poisson’s ratio confirm that alloying with V effectively improved the ductility. It was also found that Fe50Co50-xVx showed a positive shear modulus for the entire concentration range investigated, in agreement with phonon dispersion curves. The ternary addition of V to the FeCo system resulted in reduced magnetic strength due to a decrease in magnetic moments. These findings reveal that B2 FeCo-V alloys can be used as components and actuators for the automotive industry.

Carbonaceous refractory materials are widely accepted in many reducing smelting processes such as iron and ferroalloys. Oxidizing processes such as copper concentrate smelting traditionally use magnesia and/or alumina/silica refractory materials. The main objection to the use of carbon-based refractories as the exposed working lining in oxidizing applications is the potential for free oxygen to react with the carbon at high temperature, which could rapidly degrade the refractory lining. In 2013, Outotec and GrafTech conducted joint trials of a thermally conductive, carbonaceous lining for smelting copper concentrates in the Outotec® pilot-scale top-submerged-lance (TSL) furnace in Dandenong, Australia. This testwork had two equally important goals; to demonstrate the ability of carbon refractories to withstand oxidizing process conditions, while ensuring that neither furnace operating conditions nor process stability were negatively affected by the refractory material. The paper discusses the input parameters of the trials, key observations during the testwork program, and the results and conclusions from both process and refractory design standpoints.

This paper presents a case history on mitigating vibration problems associated with the installation of steel sheetpiles. The project in-cludes installation of steel sheetpiles for a utility trench within 40 feet (12.2 meters) of a very sensitive manufacturing facility. Numerous production line quality control instruments and manufacturing processes within the manufacturing facility are extremely sensitive to vibrations. To minimize the impact to the owner, we specified that the contractor perform a vibration study using different types of pile hammers. The results and conclusions of the vibration study are presented in this paper.

The stresses which initiate deformation processes in metals are fundamentally important in the study of the mechanical properties of metals. A point of inflection in the load-elongation curves obtained for single crystals' has been rather too readily interpreted as a true yield point, and the critical resolved shearing stress on the plane of slip taken as a material constant. Even early work showed that the stress at this point varies with rate of loading, but it has not been generally appreciated that creep tests under static loads alone are suited for determining the existence or nonexistence of a yield point.* It has now been shown by Miller that single crystals of zinc3 when loaded statically begin to yield at loads too small to measure; as a result there is no case now known, apart from that cited in the present paper, in which a true critical stress for yielding has been demonstrated for single crystals of metals. The case of iron has especial interest: the existence of an upper and lower yield point and of an elongation at the yield point in ordinary iron and steel marks this substance as unusual, though the effects have been found to a very minor degree in other metals and alloys. $ Most alloys do not show such marked phenomena when appreciable yielding begins, and accordingly modern practice is to speak of the yield strength of such materials, a stress read from the load-elongation curve after elongation has begun, rather than yield point. The special behavior of iron suggests that it is more likely that single crystals of iron should have a true yield point than other metals. The study of the mechanical properties of metals and alloys requires a determination of the crystallographic mechanism of deformation, wlletller deformation proceeds by slip, twinning, or cleavage, or a combination of these, and a determination of the stresses that induce these modes of deformation.
