A kinetic model for leaching of particulate metals in a batch system has been developed. The leaching mechanism has been analyzed by solving a series of ordinary differential equations relating heterogeneous reaction kinetics at the solid/liquid interface to mass transfer of reactant and products. Special emphasis has been given to the effect of changing of the surface area of the leaching substrate and initial particle distribution on the overall leaching rate. The dissolution of gold powders in acidic solution with bromine as an oxidant has been used as a model system. The effect of particle size, chemical reaction order, rate constant and mass transfer coefficient on the overall rate of dissolution of metal powder has been analyzed and discussed.

The environmental impact of solid waste materials is closely linked to their potential to produce a hazardous leachate once deposited in a landfill. This potential is conventionally assessed with simple laboratory batch leach tests, which find more and more frequent application also in the minerals and metals industry. Such tests are intended to help distinguish between high and low risk wastes, but are completely unsuitable to allow quantitative prediction or modelling of the long-term leachate generation potential. In the present approach the leachate generation process is perceived as a combination of bulk convective transport, stagnant zone and inner particle diffusion, as well as reaction kinetic effects. Model equations are formulated accordingly. A modelling frame work, WASTESIM, has been developed at UCT, which allows flexible combination of the model components and simulation of leach scenarios. Quantitative model parameters are obtained from a systematic laboratory study on the waste material in question. The combined assessment and modelling approach is demonstrated with a study on Cr (VI) leaching from a ferro-chromium slag material. Although not straightforward, the approach is particularly useful in determining long-term liabilities in the context of waste disposal sites with considerably more reliability than has previously been possible. Backfilling has become an integral process in underground mining operations, with varying cost-effective forms of application. This study is a part of an overall investigation into the backfill practices at Copper Cliff North Mine (CCNM). The mine is well-diversified in terms of backfill methodologies and practices. The mine employs different fill methods such as cemented and un-cemented rock fill, slag fill, and cemented hydraulic fill (or a combination of them) in order to fill the voids created by mining activities. The history of backfilling at CCNM has been dominated by cemented and un-cemented slag fill. Each fill method requires operating and engineering guidelines for a cost effective quality control system. The purpose of this paper is to briefly discuss the backfill methods and applications, operating guidelines, and engineering requirements at CCNM.

"Wholly owned by the Coniagas Mining Company, the oldest continuously listed mining company on the Toronto Stock Exchange, St. Andrew Goldfields is located on Hwy. 101 approximately 30 miles east of downtown Timmins, Ontario. Geographically situated on the Porcupine-Destor Fault, the mine and mill in Stock township is positioned in the heart of Northeastern Ontario's goldmining communities.In July 1988, a 600 ft. shaft, hoist, and compressors were already in place when construction started on a 500 T.P.D. capacity C.I.P. mill and crushing plant.By June 15, 1989 the mill was commissioned and attained the design capacity by August of that same year. Since then, changes to the circuit have increased throughput to 900 T.P.D. from two significantly different ore sources.Meeting the Ministry of the Environment's guidelines is an ongoing commitment utilizing the Inca S02 process in line between the tailings pond and secondary polishing pond.INTRODUCTIONExploration on what is now known as St Andrew Goldfields' Stock Township Mine was carried out ln the early l960 1 s by Hollinger Mines Ltd. Transalloys produces 160 000 tons of SiMn per annum from five AC submerged-arc furnaces. The lime-ore melt from two AC open-arc furnaces is contacted with SiMn to produce 50 000 tons of medium carbon FeMn per annum. Metallics in the slag are reclaimed in a jigging plant, which has been in operation since 1999. The flow of materials between the jigging plant and furnaces has been optimised. The amount of recycle slag in the feed of the SiMn furnaces has been decreased by more than 30% which still provides satisfactory stability of the furnace operation. The jigging plant has absorbed all the additional slag generated, to recover SiMn metal. A review of the raw materials used and operating parameters for SiMn production was also undertaken. Slag to metal ratios were decreased by more than 30% by reducing the slag recycle, removing magnesite from the recipe and introducing high-grade ore. Electrode penetration was improved by reducing coke levels and by utilising more reactive coal. The pitch circle diameter (PCD) was reduced to get a better operating stability on furnace no 5 using the MINSTRAL Control System. Energy consumption on the furnaces improved by more than 15% while SiMn production increased as a result by more than 18%.

Because trade increased among various nations after World War II, the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe established a Classification Working Party in 1949 to develop an International system for classifying coal. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed in accordance with characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Terms for describing similar or identical coals differed in each nation. This caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade and also hampered exchange of technical information on problems of coal utilization. Experts4/ participating in the classification project early in their work agreed that two systems should be formulated, one for the higher rank coals or so-called "hard" coals in European terminology and the other one for the lower rank coals, the latter designated mainly as brown coals and lignites in the various countries. Rank refers to the degree of metamorphism (progressive alteration) in the natural coalification series from lignite and brown coal to anthracite. The system for classification of hard coals was published late in 1956 as a document of the United Nations.5/ Results of a study for applying this system to American coals were published in 1958.6/

"Lax, misguided, and dangerous" is Rep. James Santini's description of the official US position on strategic nonfuel minerals. Santini (D-NV), chairman of the House Mines and Mining Subcommittee, criticized the Interior Department for "its long record of benign neglect" regarding the domestic minerals crisis. Santini made his remarks at a news conference at the American Mining Congress convention in San Francisco, where he released his subcommittee report "US Minerals Vulnerability: National Policy Implications." The report-said to be the first major congressional study of the minerals issue by a committee of jurisdiction is the result of a two-year inquiry. The investigation was undertaken, according to the chairman, "because no person or agency in the executive branch of government fully grasps the critical importance of nonfuel minerals to the nation's economy, defense, and quality of life." The report also urges a larger role for the Department of Defense, which has "stood passively by for many years as a consuming by-stander," according to the report. President Carter's incomplete Non-fuel Minerals Policy Review also drew the committee's ire; Santini calls it "a tragic waste that cost tax-payers $3.5 million and the loss of some 13,000 person-days." The subcommittee examined the following issues for its report: • The US minerals industry's inability to meet national raw material needs under a "hodgepodge of contradictory, restrictive, and irrational" federal regulations; • Dependency on foreign sources of strategic minerals in times of "increasing resource nationalism" and "Soviet mineral expansionism;" • National security needs for foreign mineral resources that do not have effective substitutes; • The US government's approach to national minerals policy "amid a growing realization that such a policy does not exist." The subcommittee report includes an analysis of public and private studies on nonfuel minerals and discusses a series of policy problem areas that negatively affect domestic production. Capital formation disincentives, tax policies, antitrust enforcement, environmental laws, health and safety regulations, technical problems, and restricted access to federally-controlled public lands contribute to what Santini calls a "tragic irony." "The irony is that we are a nation vastly rich in mineral resources yet our own government chooses to stifle development of these critical raw materials and thereby increase offshore reliance. The tragedy is that we also are ensuring US vulnerability to severe economic dislocations and a weakening of our national security." In just six years, from 1973-1978, the US trade deficit in nonfuel minerals rose from $2 billion per year to $8 billion, according to the report. The country imports more than 50% of 23 critical minerals, including 100% of its manganese, chromium, cobalt and platinum. The US is promoting its dependence on foreign mineral sources at the very time the security of many of those sources is becoming less certain, the report notes. Santini said the subcommittee investigation revealed a vulnerability that may be more serious and pervasive than that of foreign oil. The US may be able to develop alternate energy resources, but there are no effective substitutes for many nonfuel minerals. The report also discloses that US stockpiles of critical and strategic minerals are of inadequate supply and quality. Holdings of some vital minerals are far below present objectives, and for some there are no holdings at all, according to Santini. To resolve the current crisis, the report makes the following recommendations: • Complete immediately President Carter's Interagency Nonfuel Minerals Policy Review; • Implement (throught the Interior Department) the 1970 Mining and Minerals Policy Act; • Create an Office of Energy and Minerals with the same stature, power, and oversight responsibilities as the Council on Environmental Quality; • Ease federal restrictions on mineral exploration and development on public lands and implement a complete review of public land use policies; •Fund for and fulfill US nonfuel minerals stockpiling objectives; •Increase federal funding for non-

The practice of pumping gases which inhibit combustion for purposes of controlling or extinguishing mine fires is now universally accepted. The practice has been used many times in coal mines in India and the experiences are reviewed. The procedures relating to a membrane based nitrogen generator and to a combustion gases generator are described. The physical properties, practical requirements and economic implications of using different gases is briefly reviewed. Some aspects of the practice as related to mine fires in certain collieries in other countries are dealt with.

Phelps Dodge’s Morenci copper mine has had six drills, six track-dozers, 16 shovels, two loaders, and 90 haul trucks equipped with either Caterpillar, Aquila, or Modular GPS systems for nearly three years. The Caterpillar Computer-Aided Earthmoving System is an open-architecture system, which allows for inputs to enhance orientation solutions and system functionality. This system has begun a new phase that leads to an intelligent mining system. Optimization techniques of the current system and inputs are reviewed. In addition, some practical issues of implementing new technology in a mining environment have been identified to aid in this new phase.

The Bagdad mill, located near Bagdad, AZ, was built in 1977 with a designed mill capacity of 36.3 kt/d (40,000 stpd). An autogenous mill-ball mill crusher (ABC) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three independent grinding circuits. Each contained one 9.75m-diam x 4-m-long (32-ft-diam x 13-ft-long) fixed-speed autogenous mill, a4.7-m-diam x 6.7-m- long (15.5ft-diam x 22-ft-long) ball mill and one 2. 1-m-diam (7-ft-diam) short head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was about 8.4 MW (11,350 hp), with 5.9 MW (8000 hp) in the autogenous mill, 2.2 MW (3000 hp) in the ball mill and 261 kW (350 hp) in the crusher (Fig. 1). The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously. However, they were never converted to semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mills. As a result of this design, only about 4.1 MW (5450 hp) of the designed power is used in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed, with 2.4 x 6 m (8 x 20 ft) double-deck vibrating screens. A series of conveyors re- turn screen oversize underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt (Fig. 2). A magnetic sensor detects tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit.

New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

At the International Society ofExplosives Engineers Annual Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee in February 1995, a Seismograph Standards Committee was established. The purpose of this wmmittee was to develop objective performance specifications for vibration measurement instrumentation and field use practices. It was also understood that due to geology, temperature, and moisture in the soils, it is not possible to design and build an instrument to give ‘results which are absolutely comparable for ground vibration. It was, however, considered essential to standardize instrumentation by which vibration can be measured under closely defined conditions so that results obtained by users of seismographs are always the same ,&thin stated tolerances.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The condition of tunnels at Premier has deteriorated to such an extent that an objective viewpoint on what leads to poor condition was required. Poor and untimely development results in schedule deviation, rehabilitation, and increased working costs. The project focused primarily on quality, and not on efficiency. The project gave management guidelines that need to be focused on in order to produce quality infrastructure. The conclusions were reached by doing literature searches, underground site investigations, benchmarking and computer simulations. From the results we can see that, in order to produce good quality tunnels, we have to have the basics working. This was found to be one of the major problems. Firstly, tunnel profiles are not to the design specification and no fixed blast designs existed. After revising tunnel profile statistics, over break increased to 10% (previously 7%) and development metres were 50 m short of target. Blasting was not monitored and designs not optimized for the conditions. Furthermore, geological factors are the main contributor to tunnel failure, although this process is initiated and aided by poor development (overbroken tunnels, incorrect profiles, direction and location) and blast damage. Continuing to develop tunnels in the current manner will cost R 1.5 million in additional costs for loading and supporting overbreak, whilst an additional 1 800 man-shifts will be required. Blast patterns were designed as a starting point for trials, while the implementation of a blast management system, development statistical database, tunnel hand-over procedures and a revision of the bonus system were proposed.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

This paper discusses the Queens Water Tunnel, No. 3, Stage 2, being driven by a new Robbins High Performance (HP) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).The paper is divided into four sections. In the INTRODUCTION section, a short overview of the scope of the project is presented. In the GEOLOGY section, the geological condition along the tunnel drive is briefly introduced. The TBM DESIGN section discusses the various design criteria and the resulting machine specifications. The paper concludes, in the TBM OPERATION section, with a case history describing the tunneling operation from start-up to the time of the writing of this paper.

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.
