NO physical impairment can be more serious than the partial or complete loss of sight. With reasonably good eyesight, a person is equipped to care for life and I limb, provided a rational measure of t caution is manifested. When the sight of one eye is lost or badly impaired, one-half of this God-given asset is gone, and extreme care must be taken to prevent the tragedy of total darkness that closes out the beauty of sky, field and mountain, the faces of relatives and friends, and either removes entirely or in part one's capacity to produce and earn. During 1933, The Union Pacific Coal Co., operating ten coal mines in Wyoming, decided to undertake a visual survey of all of its mine operating officials and employees. Although the cost of workmen's compensation paid because of eye injuries was material, the management was more deeply concerned with the social loss and the suffering resulting from the many eye injuries. As every element of coal production cost must be scrutinized, accurate data on all accidents, with the workmen's compensation paid therefor, are carried forward monthly. The number of accidents to eyesight and the resultant compensation paid are shown in Table 1 for nine calendar years:

El yacimiento minero de Yauricocha cuenta con un área de exploraciones donde se ha encontrado material de afloramiento con terrones de oro y concentraciones de plata. Con la finalidad de seleccionar una alternativa que beneficie el tratamiento de estos minerales, se inició un programa experimental que evalúa el proceso de lixiviación en pilas a nivel piloto. En este sentido, el presente texto analiza la correlación de parámetros existente entre las diferentes escalas de experimentación que van desde el nivel de laboratorio hasta el pilotaje, a fin de plantear formulaciones matemáticas que faciliten el escalamiento de data y racionalizen mejor el proceso de lixiviación en pilas.

La presente investigación señala la relación entre el factor tiempo-concentración y la silicosis, a partir de los resultados obtenidos por la sección Ingeniería en su estudio de ambiente de trabajo con los hallazgos del examen realizado a los obreros en un yacimiento minera del sur peruano. Para dicha correlación, se consideró únicamente el subsuelo y el personal que lo labora, excluyendo todo lo relacionado con la superficie, a fin de no diluir la tasa de prevalencia de silicosis y por la diferencia que existe en el medio ambiente del trabajo de cada trabajador. La minera se encuentra a 4600 m.s.n.m y está compuesta por rocas volcánicas terciarias y metamórficas, donde la ventilación es de tipo natural, la extracción del mineral se efectúa por el nivel inferior mediante una locomotora y el personal minero carece de implementos de protección personal. De acuerdo a la exposición de polvo, concentración, contenido de sílice libre y datos de la minera, se concluyó que la tasa de prevalencia de la silicosis fue de 11% y estuvo asociada directamente a la exposición de polvo por ocupaciones y tiempo de trabajo.Por tanto, es necesario crear un programa de prevención de silicosis, donde se instale un sistema de tuberías de agua para la perforación en húmedo, se reduzca la jornada laboral a ocho horas, se emplee atomizadores de agua después de los disparos, efectuando las operaciones de cargo mineral en estado húmedo y por último, se realice un examen periódico a los trabajadores.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. Globalization and the search for new ore deposits inevitably lead to investment in foreign markets. Investors need to be aware of the effect of their venture on regional, social and economic issues when they invest. Decades of detailed statistics from various sources can be integrated and analyzed to predict the social-economic impact of investment, thereby mitigating risk. To this end, the correlation among variables such as foreign direct investment into mining (FDIM), reserves, and socio-economic indexes is examined. The investigation focuses on South America from 1992 to 2000. Throughout the past decade, South America has benefited from capital investment from more developed countries. This huge investment by the mining industry has impacted the South American economies and can be measured directly using the FDIM. Other economic variables investigated include mining gross domestic product, direct employment, and human development indexes. The correlation is based on data compiled from the World Bank, international risk assessment agencies, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the information agencies of various South American countries. Initial analysis of the economic data suggests various expected outcomes. For example, foreign investors may disregard a measured, highly negative country risk in deference to the quality of its mineral resources. It is important to note that the standard measures of country risk published by investment analysts are not industry or investor-specific. In the case of the investor, the level of accepted risk is based on their managed investment portfolio. It is noted that arguments for level-playing fields may be the antithesis of globalization. The discovery and exploitation of ore bodies in a globalized environment necessitates the development of economic measures that standardize mining-specific risk variables and trends. The latest published information on the security of mineral investments in South America is investigated by integrating databases of economic, geologic, production, human indexes, and risk ranking.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

"The work presented here is part of an ongoing project designed to develop predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and thus, structural behaviour of a thin-walled high-pressure die-cast AM60B magnesium alloy component. This work focuses on developing correlations between process parameters and local microstructure. Numerical simulations of the die filling and solidification behaviour of the AM60B component were used to estimate local process parameters such as solidification rate, temperature gradient, filling velocity, etc. These estimated parameters were used to establish semiempirical correlations with measured VALUES (of the local microstructure measured in regions throughout the component of different solidification conditions. INTRODUCTIONHigh-pressure die-cast magnesium alloys are experiencing increasing use in structural automotive components. A strength-to-weight ratio comparable to steels and its ease of castability allow for these alloys to be utilized in such capacities as instrument panel beams, seat and door frames, and engine cradles, among others (Gjestland and Westengen, 2007). However, the current use of these alloys is limited due to variations in local mechanical properties. These local property variations restrict part designers to assume lower than actual properties, resulting in larger sections, thus diminishing the light-weighting advantages of magnesium alloys. If these local property variations could be predicted, part designers would be able to optimize die-cast magnesium alloy components and fully take advantage of the light-weighting capacity of these materials.The work presented here is part of an ongoing project aimed at developing predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and bulk mechanical performance, from variations in local microstructure, and ultimately from local process parameters in die-cast magnesium alloys. This project, unique in its nature, is based upon the results determined from fifty sequentially cast AM60B magnesium alloy instrument panel beams provided by Meridian Lightweight Technologies (shown in Figure 1)."

Blasting operations at one copper mine are studied in detail to examine the relation between blast design parameters and near-shot, in-mine, and regional seismic and acoustic observations. Five observational experiments, namely collection of blast design data, near source recordings, GPS synchronized video, near mine recordings and distant regional observations were performed during one week in August. A variety of seismic and infrasound instruments were installed near the shot, on the perimeter of the open pit mine, and at several locations up to 500 km distant. Time tagged video recordings were taken of several shots. Three shots were used in the preliminary analysis, a 350,000 lb pattern with long delays, a 60,000 lb pattern with short delays, and a 256,000 lb pattern with short delays. Maximum peak-to-peak amplitudes of the seismic signals in the mine are not a simple function of the total size of the shot, but are related to the pattern timing. Peak pressures have a less clear relation to peak pressure but match the relative amplitudes of spectra modeled from the pattern design. The predicted spectrum based upon a simple impulse model fits the observed spectrum for ground acceleration measured near the pattern and explains why in this case a pattern of 60,000 lb results in the same seismic disturbance as the 350,000 lb pattern.

We conducted the Vermont Damage Experiment in central Vermont during July 2008. Five single-hole explosions with yields ranging from 60.8 kg (134 lbs) to 122.5 kg (270 lbs) were detonated in homogeneous, low fracture density granite. The goal of the experiment was to quantify the different levels of rock damage around the source and then relate the seismic wave generation to the degree and distribution of damage and fragmentation. In addition, explosives with different velocities of detonation (VOD), including black powder (0.53 km/sec; 1737 ft/sec), heavy ANFO (4.8 km/sec; 15734 ft/sec), and COMP B (8.1 km/sec; 26574 ft/sec) were detonated to relate the VOD to seismic wave generation and extent of damage zones in the source region. Over 120 seismic stations were deployed to record the explosions at distances between 5 m and 30 km (15 ft to 19 miles).

"Impact breakage is the most elementary size reduction mechanism in comminution devices. In comminution research, characterization of breakage is primarily concerned with the energy expended to cause it. The main challenges of this approach have been quantifying the actual energy requirements of impact breakage and developing mechanistic models to accurately describe the process. For engineering load analysis, fracture is characterized in terms of strengths such as yield stress and ultimate tensile stress, which govern the maximum loads specific materials can be subjected to before irreversible inelastic deformation and subsequently complete fracture occur. With this approach, the main challenge has been to elucidate the underlying mechanism, in the means that the load causes weaknesses in the material microstructure to act as sites for stress concentrations, leading to crack initiation, propagation and eventual failure. Studies dedicated to investigating particle fracture under impact loading have led to the development of several devices for conducting breakage characterization tests. These devices include the drop weight tester, split Hopkinson pressure bar, rotary breakage tester and the short impact load cell. All these have different particle loading and breakage methods, and thus can yield distinct information which can be compiled together to study a material and the nature of breakage. This work analyses the single impact breakage data obtained across the listed devices. A homogenous ore commonly known as blue stone is used for all breakage tests. The work is conducted using standard procedures specific to each device as closely as possible. Drop weight and rotary breakage tests were used to obtain hardness parameters based on an existing t10 breakage model, while split Hopkinson pressure bar and short impact load cell measurements provided properties based on conventional engineering load analysis. The results were used to highlight the significance of the loading geometry, impact mechanism and impulse on the extent of breakage."

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. An extensive research program has been carried out at PCS Mining for some time into the use of high frequency microseismic emissions in the range of 30-200 kHz for roof fall warning in the mines. A laboratory investigation on loaded samples of potash has established a close correlation between acoustic emissions and the applied load. The tests also indicated the occurrence of the Kaiser effect. The positive and encouraging response from underground testing and controlled laboratory testing has lead to the extension of the investigation into correlation of the high frequency microseismic emissions and the change in stress distribution due to mining. Hydraulic borehole pressure cells were installed at different depths ahead of the advancing boring machine. The output due to the stress change and the microseismic event count was monitored by a continuous chart recorder. This paper discusses the results of this instrumentation. The results confirm the strong correlation between the two measured parameters and outlines future areas of research for the use of the high frequency microseismic emission techniques in quantifying the changes in stress distribution.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The comprehensive strength index YT developed can predict the tumble index of the sinter product quite well, but the comprehensive productivity index YP cannot be used to evaluate the productivity effectively.CITATION:Zhu, D Q, Xue, Y X, Pan, J and Shi, B J, 2017. THIS paper presents the results of a study of the relationship of the electrokinetic or zeta potential to flotation phenomena. The relationship is established on the experimental evidence that mineral behavior in flotation and in cataphoresis is generally governed by the chemical properties and amount of the reagents adsorbed at mineral surfaces. Cataphoresis1-5 or electrophoresis is the name given to the movement of a charged particle in a liquid medium under the influence of an applied electric field. Mineral behavior in cataphoresis, as indicated by the magnitude and sign of its ionic charge, can be represented by the term zeta potential. In this paper, the zeta potential represents the difference in potential between the immovable liquid layer attached to the surface of a solid particle and the movable liquid layer in the body of the liquid, and is the result of the tendency of ions on the surface of the particle and within the liquid boundary layer to establish a condition of equilibrium. A high positive zeta potential means that the mineral surface is dominated by cations, a high negative zeta potential indicates domination by anions, and a low zeta potential indicates that the surface is influenced almost equally by cations and anions. In terms of observed quantities the zeta potential is given by the relation [z = 47ruu(300)$ Kx] in which z is the zeta potential expressed in in volts, u the viscosity of the solution in poises, u the velocity of particles in centimeters per second, x the impressed potential gradient in volts per centimeter, and k the dielectric constant of the solution in c.g.s. units. A convenient source for the derivation of the equation is the book by Thomas,6 The term zeta coefficient is an expression coined to denote the difference between the magnitude of the zeta potential of a mineral suspended in solution A, and that of the same mineral suspended in solution B, which consists of solution A and an additional chemical agent, but is at the same pH. For example, the difference between the zeta potential of galena particles in distilled water and that in any chemical solution at the same pH is a zeta coefficient. Engineers and researchers need to estimate the mechanical properties of rocks from P-wave velocity. In previous studies, the researchers have investigated either the limited values or all the data belonging to sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks together in the same statistical analysis. In this study, the raw data pertaining to only sedimentary rocks was taken from previous studies and evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 97 samples of sedimentary rock types were subjected to statistical analysis. First, the relationships between P-wave velocity and physical-mechanical properties were investigated by simple regression analysis. All the data were then subjected to multi-regression analysis. Some empirical equations with high correlation coefficients were derived for rock engineers. The equations obtained from the analyses are compared with previous equations found in literature.

Compressive strength of cylindrical specimens of a model material and sandstone with various diameter/height (d/h) ratios was determined in unconfined compression tests. It was observed that the compressive strength increases with increase in d/h ratio. Triaxial compression tests were also conducted on the specimens of the same materials with a d/h ratio of about 0.47. It was observed that the axial stress at failure increases with increase in confining pressure. A very interesting correlation was found between the effect of d/h ratio on compressive strength in unconfined compression tests and the effect of confining pressure on axial stress at failure in triaxial tests. The relationships between d/h ratio and confining pressure, s3 in MPa are:- For model material - s3 = -0.95 + 1.7957*(d/h) 0.7883. For sandstone - s- (-0.4554 + 0.9888* (d/h) 1.0355. The correlation coefficients for these equations are 0.9997 and 1. These equations are valid for d/h ratios of up to 10.

In spite of various corrosion studies on HPDC AZ91, there is no clear indication which microstructure gives the best corrosion performance. The skin with its fine microstructure is sometimes reported to have the best corrosion resistance, but there is no clear definition of the skin. If the skin is the outermost part of the casting and nothing is removed from it, then it is contaminated and the corrosion resistance is low. If the outermost skin is removed (about 25 µm) then a better corrosion resistance can be obtained. However this does not automatically mean that there is no other region in the bulk of the casting which could have a similar or even better corrosion resistance. Indeed, the corrosion measurements including potentiodynamic polarization and long term electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed a lower corrosion resistance of the original as-cast skin about 100 pm thick. The thickness of this region is more or less independent from the thickness of the casting section. The surface region is free from any dendritic grain growth which influences the amount and distribution of the 13-phase and therefore the distribution of the most important alloying element Al. This could explain the different corrosion behavior. Further reason can be found in the enrichment of some impurities such as Fe in the near surface.

A study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between the hovering velocity and the particle settling velocity. The experiments were carried out in a water medium on five materials ranging in density from 1.070 to 4.000 kg/m3. Analysis of the results with allowance for the distribution of stream velocities over the cross section of the pipe revealed that the final settling velocity of the particles was equal to their local hovering velocity (on the stream axis), and not to the average velocity of vertical flow as is generally believed. It therefore follows that the kinetic structure of the stream must be taken into account when constructing theoretical models of the process for purposes of computation. In addition, the optimal stream velocity is not always equal to the hovering velocity and in fact is governed by other factors as well. Illustration is provided by the results of a study conducted in a vertical cascade classifier comprising eleven identical stages. The feed material was introduced at each stage successively beginning with the topmost (i* = 1 ) and ending with the lowermost (i* = 11). First, the stream velocity that yields optimum separation conditions at each stage of the cascade (i.e. k=50%, k being the yield of a given size class in the fines for a single stage) was sought. Subsequently the conditions of optimal separation for the instrument as a whole were determined (i.e. F(x) = 50%, F(x) being the yield of a given size class for the entire instrument). The results of the study are presented in the table.
