The operating principles and design of the Model 16 are discussed and a case study presented to demonstrate the use of sorters to process an industrial mineral. In addition, an economic study is presented, to highlight the benefits of ore sorting, by evaluating the increased revenue that can be achieved using an ore sorter to process a particular ore body.

Were the legislators and politicians responsible for the closing of the U.S. Department of the Interior?s Bureau of Mines (Bureau) in March 1996 fully aware of what they were doing? Throughout the United States? history, the domestic mining and minerals industry has been largely responsible for the nation?s growth and prosperity that had made it a world leader. The mining and minerals industry made it possible for the young nation to catch up with Europe during the Industrial Revolution, played an essential role leading to victories in World Wars I and II and was a core ingredient for continued economic growth. For a number of decades, America?s import dependency on non-fuel mineral materials has continued to increase. (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries). Developing domestic resources to meet current and future demands ? particularly those resources considered to be of strategic and critical value to national security ? is necessary. Federal involvement is required since many of these resources are located on public lands. Another reason for federal involvement is that the success of the industry depends on long-range research programs and advances that may take up to 25 years to become commercially available. This situation requires federal partnership to coordinate the programs necessary to collectively involve the industry, individual mining companies and colleges and universities. So, how was it possible to close a federal agency that had contributed so much to the nation?s welfare in a mandated 90-day period, with more than 1,200 employees losing their jobs?

Shale is anisotropic due to the presence of bedding planes. The anisotropic strength of shale has been extensively studied. However, little attention has been paid to the size effect on shale strength considering the anisotropy. This research uses the discrete element method to study the size effect on the strength of shale under the uniaxial stress state. It is assumed that the anisotropy is caused by bedding planes, while the size effect is caused by randomly distributed flaws. The numerical model of shale comprises three components: shale matrix modeled by bonded particles (2) bedding planes modeled by smooth joints (3) flaws modeled by discrete fractures. The developed model is scaled to different sizes and tested in the uniaxial compression and the direct tension tests. The test result show that the uniaxial compressive strength decreases as the specimen size increases when the loading direction is perpendicular or parallel to bedding planes. The uniaxial compressive strength is determined by the flaws while the bedding planes only play a limited role. However, the size effect on the direct tensile strength depends on the direction of bedding planes. When the loading is perpendicular to bedding planes, the size effect is not prominent. The direct tensile strength is determined by the bedding planes while the flaws have little effect. When the loading direction is parallel to bedding planes, the direct tensile strength decreases when the specimen size increases. The direct tensile strength is determined by the flaws while the bedding planes have little effect.

Fracture toughness of oil shale is an essential property in fragmentation to optimize particle sizes and permeability distributions in in-situ processes. Fracture mechanics of oil shale has been based on conventional fracture mechanics using notched samples and assuming the material to be isotropic and elastic. Oil shale is a layered material more accurately characterized as transversely isotropic. The senior author proposes to use a semi- circular core specimen with a center crack subjected to three point bending. Singular crack tip elements with isoparametric elements are used. The precracked semi-circular disk is modeled under displacement loading. The effect of crack length on the non-dimensionalized stress intensity factor is investigated by strain energy method, ellipse method, and stress method. Very close agreements are found. The fracture toughness is obtained by compressing the specimen in to failure. Parameters such as oil yield are investigated.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach and discrete fracture network (DFN) model, generated from the field surveys, are novel methodologies to study fracture rock mass behavior. In this paper, SRM and DFN methodologies were used to understand the influence of natural fractures on the mechanical response and failure mechanisms of stone mine pillars. First, a multi-stage up-scaling procedure with the homogenization process is established. Later, a stochastic sampling process on the SRM model to have further insight on the stone mine pillar mechanics is performed. Two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) is utilized to represent intact rock with the Voronoi-Trigon discretized blocks and to capture fractured rock mass behavior. The laboratory-size limestone mine rock specimens are systematically up-scaled to the average width of the field-size stone mine pillars. Then, the DFN model, generated from field data, is sampled to construct the SRM of the field-size pillars. By doing so, the effect of discrete discontinuities on pillar stability is studied by assessing the pillar strengths and failure mechanisms in various width-to-height ratios.

"NIOSH research has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives (RAs). These high temperature and humidity levels inside an RA may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics to create detailed thermal simulation models of RAs with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine RA. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 95°F apparent temperature limit for RAs is reasonable. The results indicated that the 95°F apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicated that the body core temperature did not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 130°F. However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were increased, the water provided in an RA would have to be increased to offset moisture loss. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature and moisture loss (sweating and respiration) in environments that are likely to be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative (RA). A range of temperatures and relative humidity were studied to determine whether the current 95°F Steadman apparent temperature (AT) limit and 2.25 quart/day water requirements for RAs as mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are reasonable [1, 2]. The effects of metabolic heat rate (activity level), miner size (height and weight), and pose (sitting or lying) on core temperature and moisture loss were also studied. MODEL DESCRIPTION TAITherm thermal modeling software (ThermoAnalytics, Inc.) was used to simulate humans in RA-like environments within a range of temperature and relative humidity combinations. The TAITherm Human Thermal Model (HTM) predicts the dynamic thermal response of the simulated miners while accounting for clothing, human tissue thermal properties, and active thermoregulation. The following sections describe the HTM in more detail, the thermal model setup for this analysis, and core temperature and moisture loss metrics found in published literature. Human Thermal Model Overview The TAITherm human thermal model was used to simulate the heat generated by the shelter occupants, and to predict the miners’ skin and core temperatures along with their sweat evaporation rates. The thermoregulation model simulates the process by which the body attempts to maintain a constant core temperature by considering the effects of shivering, sweating, and changes in skin blood flow. This model calculates surface and deep tissue temperatures within the human body as described by a surface mesh."

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Introduction The mining industry is perhaps best characterized by the numerous and abnormally high risks associated with the business of mining and by its most basic assets - ore deposits, people and technology. At the most fundamental level, it is the quality and effective utilization of these basic assets that determine a mining company's ability to compete efficiently in the international market place. The gold industry has received much attention in recent years and especially in recent months, for good reason. This commodity serves as an excellent platform for the subsequent discussion of these three basic assets and their role in mining's future. Facets of the gold industry The fate of this noble metal in recent times illustrates some of the various risks associated with the mining industry and the importance of high-quality assets, whether they be ore deposits, people or technologies. The following comments pertaining to the gold industry help place proper focus on subsequent discussions. All monetary amounts given are in US dollars. Throughout 1997, falling gold prices broke record after record: first hitting three-year lows, then a 12-year low in July and finally an 18-year low at year's end. From Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 1997, the price of gold fell by more than $2.57/g ($80/oz), or some 22%. The decline in gold-mining profitability and stock prices was even more dramatic. At the beginning of 1997, the 20 largest gold producers in North America had a market capitalization of approximately $44.5 billion. At year's end, this market cap had fallen to $26.2 billion, a reduction of 41%. The total market cap of all the world's gold companies fell from $71 billion to $46 billion, a 35% drop (Serwer, 1998). Analyses suggest that, at a spot gold price of $9.65/g ($300/oz), only one, or possibly two, North American gold-producing companies can make money when break-even or "total costs of production" are considered. While strong hedge positions mitigate this situation in the short term, clearly, this is an industry in desperate straits. For example, write-downs for North American producers in 1997 were approximately $2.5 billion. Speculative short positions in 1997 were near historical record highs and generally exceeded long positions by factors of 9:1 or 10:1. Much of this is driven by some US commercial banks, hedge fund managers and commodity speculators who can significantly move gold prices sharply over short periods of time by selling gold they do not own in the expectation they can buy it back at a lower price before they have to deliver. These signifcant short positions are likely to continue as long as central banks are willing to sell or loan gold to financial institutions that in turn make the gold available to speculators who hope to capitalize on price fluctuations. The Far East accounts for approximately 26% of the annual demand for gold. Including India, the region accounts for 43% of total demand. More than 85% of the physical demand for gold is for investment jewelry in Asia and the Middle East. This demand is extraordinarily price sensitive. The fairly recent turmoil in Asian markets and economies, combined with currency devaluations throughout the region, have made gold more expensive (30% to 50% in local currencies) for those peoples most likely to treat gold as a safe investment haven. Higher interest rates also have reduced the amount of money they have to spend on consumer goods such as jewelry. All of these recent Asian events are deflationary in nature. Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).

The general theory for the description of seismic sources is briefly discussed. The effect of excavations on seismic radiation is considered. Expressions for seismic source mechanisms in terms of the geometrical and mechanical parameters of source processes are provided for the following cases: fault slip and shear failure in a confined environment, dynamic stress fracturing around a tunnel, rock fall, landslide and sudden subsidence. A classification of seismic events in mines based on source mechanisms is introduced. The classification separates blast-, slip- and crush-type events. Various approaches of analysis of source mechanisms involving forward modelling and inversion are discussed. The following examples demonstrating the utility of source mechanisms in mining are presented: forensic analysis of damaging seismic events, assessment of the increase in the depth of failure for dynamic stress fracturing around tunnels and its duration, examination of the rockmass deformation regime, assessment of deformation around tunnels using crush-type events, identification and parameterisation of weak geological structures, stress inversion from slip-type events. Finally, the requirements for seismic data to ensure high quality source mechanism solutions are briefly reviewed and future challenges in the interpretation and utilisation of seismic source mechanisms in mines are speculated on.

The Cyprus Pima Mining Company's open pit operation was started in 1957 with the normal assumption that the ore reserve estimate was accurate within an acceptable range of values. At that tine reserves were law - volume (+10 million tons) and high grade (+1.5% Cu). Several periods of growth have brought the operation to its present production level of 55,000 tons per day of ore and +125,000 tons of waste. Over the years, a number of attempts to refine and polish the ore reserve figures have been made using a variety of established standard procedures. None of these attempts have produced results which are totally satisfactory, particularly when comparisons are made between ore reserve estimates and short to medium range production figures. Other refinements were tried using adaptations of established methods combined with computer modeling techniques. The resulting mine-model ore blocks were an improvement but they still tended to show too match tonnage of mill feed, often at too low a grade. One attempt at Kriging had only limited success. Statistical studies of operations data revealed relationships which could be used to subdivide ore blocks in much the same way as they are actually mined. Comparisons thus far between these newly developed ore blocks and production data show that the new method of evaluation yields excellent results. A new, better procedure for estimation of ore reserves apparently has been developed for the Cyprus Pima deposits. The specific procedures seem likely to have direct application to other, similar operations. The methods used to develop the procedures could be of value to still other operations.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations are within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of a standing support, and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data. INTRODUCTION A hydraulic load cell, more commonly known by “flat jack” or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of roof to floor supports. These standing or roof to floor supports include, but are not limited to: pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports. Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. These load cells are produced in South Africa, and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the applications (Barczak). Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application, common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed as shown in Figure 1. The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19 gauge or 1.11125 mm (0.04375 inch) thickness, the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow a fluid to fill the unit and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1724 kPa (250 psi), pressure relief valve will keep the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure. The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum mining complex is located near Arequipa, Peru. A 108,000 t/d copper concentrator (C1 concentrator) commenced operation in late 2006 and was debottlenecked to a 120,000 t/d capacity in 2011. A feasibility study, initiated in May 2010, assessed the potential for expanding the processing rate of the large Cerro Verde sulfide reserve via the installation of a second, stand-alone, concentrator (C2 concentrator) capable of processing a nominal 240,000 t/d ore. The feasibility study was successful and the project advanced through engineering, permitting and construction. Ramp up to nameplate capacity was ahead of schedule. The overall project was completed on schedule and within budget. The details of the project and supporting components are described. The design philosophy and design basis of the concentrator facilities are discussed as are factors that influenced the concentrator layout. Risk mitigation features included in the design are reviewed. The factors that drove the successful and rapid ramp up to nameplate capacity are discussed. Operational experiences in the first year of plant operation and project lessons learned are described. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A. (SMCV) operates a copper mine near Arequipa in southern Peru. Small scale operations operated intermittently until 1970 when the deposit reverted to the ownership of Minero Perú S.A (Peruvian government). Minero Perú S.A. commenced mining and processing of oxide reserves in 1972 and placed an SX-EW plant into production in 1976. The ownership of the property has changed hands several times over the years. Minero Perú sold Cerro Verde to Cyprus Climax Metals in 1994. Cyprus was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1999. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) acquired Phelps Dodge in 2007. Several studies were undertaken during the 1990’s that tried to establish the economic justification to process the large primary sulfide resource that underlies the surface oxide deposit. None of these studies produced an economic conclusion until a feasibility study was completed by Phelps Dodge and SMCV in 2004. This study provided the economic justification for the construction of a 108,000 t/d concentrator during 2005 and 2006. The key to the success of this study was identifying a water source that was sufficient to support processing economies of scale. Concentrator operations commenced in late 2006. The original design production rate of 108,000 t/d was achieved on a 30 day moving average basis on the 266th day after ore was first introduced. During 2009, studies and evaluations were performed that had the objective of addressing observed concentrator bottlenecks to allow a production rate of 120,000 t/d to be achieved. The 120,000 t/d figure represents the sustainable production limits associated with the installed primary crusher and tailing thickeners which would have been prohibitively expensive to upgrade. Debottlenecking activities were implemented during 2010 allowing sustained production rates of 120,000 t/d to be achieved."

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. The problems of slope stability in open-cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the ore body, This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ.

IN THE BEGINNING Contrary to popular myth, the personal computer can trace its roots back to a time before 1981 and the IBM PC. The seeds of the personal computer revolution were probably founded in 1975 with the release of the Altair (kit) personal computer, first advertised in Popular Electronics. June of 1975 marked the beginning of the Homebrew Computer Club in San Francisco. The founding membership list of the Homebrew Club now reads like a "Who's Who" of those involved in the early development of the personal computer industry. The Apple I computer was created by Steve Wozniak in early 1976 from the newly manufactured MOS Technology 6502 chip. It had 4,000 bytes (4K) of Random Access Memory (RAM] memory, a revolutionary amount of memory in 1976. Another early pioneer, the Commodore Pet computer, was another 6502 machine, but with 8K of memory. Tandy Corporation made its name in the hobby industry with leather kits. They embarked on a new path with the production of the TRS-80 line of personal computers. Most were based on the Z-80 chip, but again, were memory limited. A number of other Z-80 based systems followed later, including the Osbourne and the KayPro Computers. These systems were based on the Digital Research CP/M operating system and had a maximum of 64,000 bytes of memory (64K). The Apple I1 Computer appeared in 1977. Newer models of the original Commodore Pet and an Atari computer followed. These machines were also limited to 64K of memory addressing, and the early models typically shipped with only 16K, 32K, or 48K of memory. The Z-80 and the 6502 were the first truly commercialized CPU chips touting boxes with key- boards, monitors (sometimes a TV), and the ability to expand (peripheral slots for serial communications, centronics parallel communications, etc.1. They all shared one technology, audio tape as a storage media. The use of a portable tape recorder provided inexpensive, if not always reliable, magnetic storage. The tape recorders were typically finicky and required patience to use. Adjustments to the volume control were often needed to find "just-the-right" setting for loading or saving information. This kept the personal computer from being accepted in many markets, and gave it a reputation as a hobbyist or experimenters' toy. In early 1979, Steve Wozniak finished the design of a floppy disk drive and controller. This was a revolutionary design which reduced the "then" standard number of controller chips from fifty-plus, to just eight. With the advent of an affordable floppy disk drive mechanism, the personal computer was about to gain respectability. From a business standpoint, it was now possible to save and reliably retrieve business information. It also provided a superior means of distribution for commercially created software. Commercial software became a commodity rather than an oddity.

The Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation has provided Bureau of Mines researchers with an opportunity to investigate the hydrology of leaching an in place copper ore deposit. Hydrologic investigations of underground in situ copper leaching are being jointly conducted under a cooperative agreement. The hydrologic concerns of leaching operations at the Casa Grande mine focus on maintaining adequate solution injection and recovery rates, and on distributing the injected leach solution effectively within the ore deposit. Hydrologic considerations underlying these concerns relate to the permeability of the oxide ore zone during leaching, the unsaturated condition of the deposit prior to leaching, and the constraints imposed on in situ hydrologic design by the underground mine setting. The investigation involves monitoring of flow and pressure conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells, estimating permeability conditions using a hydrologic model, and on-site testing of hydrodilation and airlift pumping. Transient, fracture-controlled permeability is determined to be the dominant hydrologic consideration. A statistical modeling procedure has been developed for estimating changes in permeability during leaching. Flexibility in well design and operation is essential for accommodating the changes in fracture permeability that occur during leaching.

The iron-ore underground Kiirunavaara mine (Sweden) has been seismically active since 2008. In 2021 the production is on levels 1079 and 1108 m, at the deepest. The seismic activity has changed in character over time with one step change in 2015 when the number of large (ML>2) seismic events increased, and another one when the mine experienced a seismic event with Mw 4.2 in 2020. In 2017, the mine evaluated Hydraulic Fracturing (HF) as a possible mitigation technique for larger seismic events and a one-hole trial was performed. The trial proved promising, and it was decided to go forward with a large-scale trial covering an entire production area in the mine. The large-scale trial consists of 25 fracturing holes, 50 – 100 m long, running along 500 m out of the ~4500 m long orebody and spanning between production levels 1108 m and 1252 m. The fracturing process continued for a year, resulting in ~38,000 seismic events with −3.3<ML<1.4. The breakdown pressure varied between fractures in the same hole as well as between holes in the same area. Average breakdown pressure per hole was between 12 MPa and 50 MPa. The seismic response to HF in 2021 varied greatly from hole to hole and between fractures in the same hole. The variation in response could be related to the geological conditions and the infrastructure, such as large caving ore passes. In this paper some details about the experiments and broad preliminary analysis of the effect of the HF by using seismic source parameters of the induced seismic events are presented: 1) Distribution of seismic activity, 2) the ‘equivalent’ magnitudes for each hole calculated from the cumulative seismic energy and seismic potency released during the fracturing, compared with the local geological conditions; 3) the predominant failure mechanism of the seismic events caused by HF was defined. A difference in the behaviour between larger and smaller events was noticed, as ML>0 events seem to be compression type failures and ML<0 events seem to be related to slip on pre-existing structures. No seismic events related to creation of a new fracture have been identified yet.

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.
