Linear grade distribution measurements determined from polished sections of randomly oriented particles can be used to estimate the extent of liberation for multiphase particles of specified size. Two techniques, optical image analysis and microprobe analysis, have been used to establish linear grade distributions. Both techniques were evaluated and compared using variable grade samples of products from a copper porphyry flotation circuit. The statistical significance of the linear grade distribution data obtained by optical image analysis was assessed. The average chalcopyrite content of these samples, as determined by chemical assay was used to estimate the variance of the experimental procedure. For a given accuracy, the number of particles required to obtain an unbiased representation of the sample was determined.

The setting of tasks for the process control of coal cleaning, and in this connection the requirements for instrumentation can be classified into the following three fields: - Monitoring the operation of individual units, or process steps, - Control of units or process steps, - Control of the entire coal cleaning process with the intention of optimizing the operation and the profitability of the process. Instrumentation is affected by the type of cleaning processes. For introduction Figure 1 shows the simplified flow sheet of coal preparation which is usual in the German Ruhr District and in which desirable places for the measurement of ash, moisture and sulfur content are marked. The preparation plant is supplied with run-of-mine coal from the shaft via a homogenization facility. In a first step of primary classifying the raw feed coal is screened at about 10 mm. The raw coarse coal ( = 10 mm) is sorted by jig washers or heavy-medium separators. the raw fine coal (< 10 mm) at first is pneumatically sized at about 0.5 to 0.75 mm. The fines, the aspirated dust, are a finished partial product which will be added to the final metallurgical or steam coal. The material 10 to 0.75 mm subsequently is sorted in fine coal jigs and dewatered in centrifuges. The sludge obtained with the wet cleaning processes is dewatered in thickeners and fed to the flotation. Concentrate and tailings are dewatered by filters or bowl centrifuges and by chamber filter presses or belt filter presses, respectively. The partial products coarse coal, fine coal, flotation concentrate, aspirated dust, and middlings are blended to result in the sellable products metallurgical and steam coal.

Discrete element is a numerical technique for describing the collision dynamics and motion of an assembly of particles. In particular, calculations are done on full three-dimensional space with a force-contact law for collisions and Newton’s law for subsequent motion. It may be said that there is no empiricism in this approach. The paper describes the full scale simulation of large diameter semiautogenous grinding mill of size 40X24 ft. It is shown that the simulation predicts the power draft of plant size mill extremely accurately. Also these simulations have been adapted uniquely to assess the motion of pebbles and slurry in pulp lifters. The passage of slurry from pulp lifters into trunnion is extremely important since flow-back and carryover must be avoided at all cost. The dynamics of slurry flow through pulp lifters is also described in this paper.

The selective adhesion of hydrophobic Mycobacterium phlei to coal particles is responsible for flocculation of fine coal from associated ash forming minerals. The driving force for the differential adhesion is the hydrophobic interactions between the fatty acid surface of the organism and hydrophobic nature of coal. The effect of Mycobacterium phlei on surface hydrophobicity, surface charge and mechanism of adhesion on coal and associated minerals are controlled by several factors including hydrophobicity and surface and solution chemistry of the system. Adhesion measurements indicate that maximum adhesion occurs below the isoelectric point (IEP) of the coal particles. While massive adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei is observed on coal, however, negligible amount of Mycobacterium phlei attaches to mineral pyrite and quartz.

Mineral models provide a systematic and comprehensive approach for analyzing and fore- casting the behavior of mineral markets and industries.&apos; They also permit the analysis of a wide range of policy decisions. Obviously such models cannot capture all of the intricate relationships that shape the behavior of a mineral market. However, such models have become extremely useful and in many cases support the decision making approach of judgmental analysts. They tend to narrow the range of likely outcomes and thus reduce the risks and uncertainties of investing, trading, and speculating in minerals. Mineral models provide not only answers to "what-if" questions, they also inform analysts of the benefits and costs associated with mineral investment decisions. More recently they have been applied to specific mineral issues of the possible impact of buffer stock stabilization schemes and of import supply restrictions. Mineral Models Defined Because mineral models are so diverse, we must begin with a fairly broad definition. A mineral model is a formal representation of a mineral market, industry or system where the behavioral relationships included reflect the underlying economic and engineering factors as well as the political and social institutions. Of ten, but not always, a mineral model will consist of some combination of the following components: demand, supply, inventories and prices. Modeling of demand behavior normally begins with an interpretation of basic demand responses to prices and income (i.e., the associated price and income elasticities). Price elasticities vary among different minerals and among their diverse uses. They tend to be lower for minerals without close substitutes than for those where such substitutes exist. In addition, these elasticities vary with time as well as with the actual excess demand or excess supply. Variations like these, coupled with the relative instability of prices for a number of minerals, make explanations of demand behavior difficult. The degree to which demand responds to changes in income depends on the income elasticity of the end products to which the minerals serve as inputs. Those products with a relatively low income elasticity tend to experience proportionally smaller swings in sales than those with higher elasticities. The transmission of demand cycles to minerals producers comes through a series of stage-of-process effects. Demand measurement also is influenced considerably by mineral substitution patterns. The cross-price elasticity of a competitive or complementary commodity also varies with minerals, markets, and time. Where minerals easily substitute for one another, as in the case of cop- per and aluminum in electrical conductor applications, cross-price elasticities are relatively high. A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

This paper presents a critical review of geo-structural mapping methodologies applied to deep tunneling projects in complex mountain chains such as the Alps. Geological forecastings are often a crucial part of tunneling projects, which should allow contractees or contractors to assume their own risks. Despite this, often adequate methodological criteria are not applied in the realization of these studies, with consequent increase of costs and delays. A discussion should hopefully start in the world of tunneling in order to define a correct approach.

The integration of interactive computer graphics technology with data analysis tools can assist in the evaluation of deposit models: the super- imposition of mine openings on complex geology can be quickly perceived using dynamic visualisation, colour-coding and transparency control while analysis functions assist in quantifying displayed information. To illustrate the functionality of such integration a research prototype system is presented which allows the interactive visualisation and evaluation of deposit models comprising both structural boundaries and the distribution of continuous properties.

The Kipushi deposit, where the Prince Leopold Mine has been installed, belongs to Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga and is located in the Belgian Congo, 20 miles SW of Elisabethville, at the vicinity of the Northern Rodhesian Border. The deposit is of the hydrothermal metasomatic vein-type; mineralisation took place, through the limestone of the, lower Kundelungu. This is a special fea¬ture of the deposit, compared to the other copper deposits of the neighbourhood, both in the. Belgian Congo and in Rhodesia. Actually, the primary mineralisation of these other deposits; is directly related to the stratigraphic systems: schistous dolomitic in the Belgian Congo and Roan in Rhodesia. Both facies are older than the Kundelungu and separated from this formation by a tectonic cataclysm. The valuable elements occuring at Kipushi are principally copper; and zinc. The deposit also contains smaller quantities of lead, precious metals and other elements including germanium.

Studies in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, and southwestern Pennsylvania determined whether subsidence caused by longwall mining influences soil moisture and tree growth. Soil moisture was measured both over new longwall panels and over an unmined control area throughout the growing seasons of 1990, a wet year when the panels were excavated, and 1991, a dry year. No significant effects of mining could be detected. Tree growth was studied in two pairs of woodlots. In each pair, one woodlot was located over a longwall panel excavated about 1980 and the other over an unmined area. Differences in tree growth between mined and unmined areas were neither significant (for most species) nor consistent in direction. The above results imply that if mining does have impacts they are likely to be highly site-specific and localized such as by disruptions of springs or soil slippage.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the advantages and disadvantages of single tube and twin tubes for subway systems. Different aspects such as diameter of the tunnel (tunnel spaceproofing), configuration of subway line and stations, impacts on passenger safety and evacuation, ventilation system as well as rail system for each solution were evaluated and compared. In addition, a multi-criterion approach is established to facilitate the decision making for these two different subway systems. The practical example of a mega project has been discussed and the details of the decision-making process has been explained. This proposed multicriterion can be used to facilitate selecting the best subway system in any urban areas.

It is a transitional region in which it is difficult to ascertain the mechanisms of adsorption of ions, molecules, etc. on mineral surfaces, as well as other secondary reactions which occur in interfacial regions. Thus, in this paper the authors deal with conceptual considerations from which hypotheses are set forth to describe the environmental- interfacial relationships for sulfide minerals.

With the growing exportation of coal from North America to the Pacific Rim countries and Europe, has come an increasing awareness of the need to determine economically optimized amounts of incombustibles (ash and moisture contents) for the shipped product. Despite the fact that demand bas caused a steady improvement in selling price, particularly for thermal coals, growing production and transportation costs have compelled producers to keep a sharp eye open for ways and means of minimizing the latter since this probably represents the greatest single potential for making savings. Consequently the Coal Industry has become acutely aware of the economic ramifications of eliminating moisture in particular, thereby producing further saving in the cost of transportation of product from the mine to the consumer. There is, however, a lower limit to which dewatering or drying can be taken and this relates to dustiness which is a function of the characteristics of the coal and the methods used for handling and storage during trans-shipment. Overdrying can lead to serious dust losses and difficulties in handling particularly if the coal contains a large proportion of fines. The ways and means for achieving this "happy medium" of optimization in moisture removal are seemingly undergoing gradual modification largely assisted by the following factors. a) Improvement in effectiveness of coal dewatering and drying equipment. b) Improvement in operational availability and utilization of the equipment. c) The development of surfactants, polymer flocculants and other agents which in many cases can be almost tailor made to suit specific applications.

The Henderson ore body is east of the Continental Divide in the Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains about 50 miles west of Denver. The ore body is being developed for mining by workings that extend more than 3500 feet below the topographic surface. During construction of the mine workings, ground water in fractures in crystalline rocks has been encountered. From 1969 to 1973, Charles S. Robinson & Associates, Inc., in cooperation with the engineering and geologic staffs of the Climax Molybdenum Company, a division of Amax Inc., studied the ground water geology of the Henderson mine development area. Detailed geologic records of the Henderson mine were available as a result of the exploration, evaluation and development of the mine. Records of the flow, chemical composition and temperature of the ground water at and near the surface, from the entire mine, from portions of the mine, and from exploration holes drilled in the mine, were kept as the mine was developed. Where possible, ground water pressures in drill holes and changes in pressure with time, were recorded. The geologic, hydrologic and chemical data were correlated. The following conclusions were drawn from the correlations: The ground water in the Henderson mine occurs in fractures in Precambrian igneous and metasedimentary rocks and in a series of Tertiary intrusive rocks. Two zones of ground water were recognized; an active zone, in which the fracture systems are recharged and discharged annually into the surface water system, and a passive zone, in which the fractures were filled with water in the geologic past. Discharge from the passive zone is through mine workings that intersect the fracture systems. Discharge from a fracture or fracture system is initially high but decreased with tire!. The rate of decrease in flow (or pressure) is exponential. By measuring the change in flow with time, it is possible to calculate the amount of flow at some given period of time in the future. Based on changes in rate of flow and pressure, and the geology, and assuming rates of mining of the ore, it will be possible to predict the volumes of water that will have to be handled during the life of the mine and the area around the mine that will be drained by the mining operation.

Dust dispersion characteristics in mine airways are important for developing engineering controls for dust and explosions. Authors here have used CFD modeling approach to analyze the dust dispersion characteristics in mine airways. The technique was initially validated with the published field experimental data. The results obtained were in a reasonable agreement. CFD validation results show that in a single entry the dust concentration decreases exponentially as a function of distance. Finer particles can travel up to a distance of 350-400 m away from the source. Parametric studies indicate that air velocity and input dust concentration has significant influence on dust concentration distribution. CFD modeling was then applied to study the dust dispersion characteristics in a room-and-pillar mine layout. Preliminary results show that dust concentration distribution is highly dependent on the airflow patterns and air velocity distribution. The distribution is not exponential until the velocity in the travel way becomes uniform. Data developed in this study may be used to design mine layouts and engineering controls for dust control and explosions.

The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author&apos;s privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. The River Island mining site is located at approximately river mile (RM) 15 on the Clackamas River, a large gravel-bed river in northwest Oregon. During major flooding in February 1996, rapid channel change occurred. The natural process of meander cutoff, slowed for several years by dike construction, was accelerated by erosion into gravel extraction ponds on the inside of a meander bend during the flood. In a matter of hours, the river cut off a meander and began flowing through a series of gravel pits located on the inside of the meander bend. The cutoff resulted in a reduction in reach length of approximately 1,100 m. Erosion by bed lowering, knick point retreat and lateral erosion of upstream river banks occurred quickly. Within two days of the peak flow, 3.5 hectares of land and 105,500 m3 of gravel were eroded from the river bank just above the cutoff location. Much of this gravel moved a short distance downstream into the excavation. Reach slope increased from 0.0022 to approximately 0.0035 in the cutoff reach. Between 1996 and 2003, the knick point from the meander cutoff has migrated 2,290 m upstream, resulting in increased bed load transport, incision, and local lowering of the water table. In 1993, prior to the meander cutoff, transects were surveyed in the River Island reach upstream of the cutoff location. Resurvey of these transects and aerial photo analysis indicates that 96% of the knick point migration occurred during the first winter following meander cutoff. Connection of the flowing river to the off-channel ponds has had minimal effect on water temperatures in the mainstem Clackamas River. It is likely that this minimal change in temperature will decrease as ponds are isolated from active river flow by gravel bar deposition. Fish net-ting in spring 2002, suggests that salmonid use of the pond in the spring is minimal. The most abundant native species netted were large-scale sucker and northern pikeminnow. The most abundant non-native species netted was brown bullhead. Early regulation by state and federal agencies did not adequately evaluate potential impacts to the river and the floodplain; nor did it evaluate future impacts related to geomorphic processes and sediment transport. New permit evaluation methods, currently implemented by both Oregon and Washington, incorporate 1) river dynamism through historic river migration analysis; 2) stability of human structures in light of river dynamics; and 3) sediment transport and its impact on channel stability and dynamics. The gravel pit capture at River Island highlights the potential risks of mining in an active secondary channel of a large gravel-bed river. Mining deeper than the depth of the adjacent channel, within the active migration zone, may increase off-site impacts. In locations where multiple gravel excavations are present within the meander zone, a comprehensive reclamation and restoration plan should be developed which provides long-term channel stability within the natural variability of the entire river reach.

Weighting materials as we know them today were first recognized in 1922 by B. K. Stroud1. Stroud, who was supervisor or the Mineral Division of the Louisiana Department of Conservation, tested galena, cement and hematite as weighting materials and successfully used hematite to make a "heavy mud". The first use of barite was in the fall of 19222 . The process of adding heavy minerals in mud was patented in 1926 by Stroud and National Pigments and Chemical Company, a subsidiary of National Lead Company now NL Industries, Inc. The ground barite was marketed as BAROIDR barite.
