At first glance, the similarity between the fine grinding of cement clinker and coarse grinding done in other mineral processing industries may seem remote. However, it is interesting to note that the mill discharge fineness of cement clinker is only 70 to 90% passing 100 mesh and quite comparable to other mineral processing grinds. There is however, a greater dependence of the mill on the air separator in the finish grinding of cement clinker than in other mineral processing industries which explains why a technique to guage the balance between a mill and separator first began in the cement industry. (1) More recently an adaptation of this technique has shown its application to the processing of phosphate rock and is the central topic of this paper. First, an explanation of work done with fine grinding cement circuits seems appropriate together with a few general comments regarding cement. When unground or partially ground cement clinker enters a finish grinding mill, it is subjected to mechanical forces of impact and attrition which gradually reduce it to a range of sizes characteristic of finish cement. That is, a range of approximately 1 to 125 microns. The large proportion of superfine particles relative to the coarse and intermediate size particles is typical of portland cement particle size distribution. It accounts for the workability characteristics of plastic concrete and the early strength development of concrete which is so necessary to its successful use as a construction material. For this reason It is quite evident from quality control tests when a shortage of superfines exists.

This paper presents technical issues in the design and management of a retorted oil shale disposal site. Major physical and geochemical mechanisms which affect the disposal are: heat transport, moisture migration, chemical species transport, auto-ignition, and mechanical behavior alterations of the retorted oil shale pile. The interaction of these mechanisms and their relative magnitude will affect the environmental behavior of the pile. The paper discusses the coupling between the mechanisms, presents a framework to quantify the processes by laboratory and field measurements, and in addition discusses the use of mathematical models to provide quantitative predictions.

The SAG milling of ores with markedly variable grinding rates presents definite process control challenges. Decisions must be made regarding the selection of the most appropriate combination of mill volumetric load level, percent solids, and mill speed for the combination of ore types being processed at the moment. An investigation was performed concerning the effects of these parameters. General results are presented.

The extensive lead time to develop most Arizona copper deposits commenced with initial production efforts before the turn of the century, when the first attempts were made to recover gold and silver and later copper from the high-grade vein deposits of the territory. Each of these discoveries, prospects, and early operations had its own lead time and life cycle as economic production was attempted. Because prices of the metals fluctuated and the higher grade material was depleted, economics forced operations to close and companies to fail. Renewed interest in the property because of improved conditions, different interpretation of the geologic structure, or new promotional ability frequently resulted in the formation of yet another company to finance the exploration and, hopefully, the development of the property. This cycle of renewed activity and subsequent abandonment was and is common, accounting for many lead times and for the long period of time from the initial location of claims to large-scale production. In order to gain a perspective on the lead-time interval necessary to achieve development of a large-scale operation, the histories of several major Arizona mines were examined, rather than a simple listing of discovery and production dates of many mines to arrive at a statistical average. The Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel, and Twin Buttes properties were studied, and as much data as possible obtained on the Pinto Valley, Esperanza, Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park-Ithaca Peak properties.

At New World, Au-Cu-Ag mineralization occurs in stratiform car-bonate-hosted, massive sulfide-iron oxide, and skarn-replacement deposits. Regional pyritic-alteration, local massive sulfide mineralization and mine wastes generate acid drainage within the district. Water quality improves down gradient through dilution and mixing of acid and metal-rich mine water with bicarbonate-rich, low-metal surface and groundwater, and precipitation of metal-rich ferrihydroxide phases. Natural deposits of ferricrete indicate that pre-mining ARD has occurred, providing important clues to pre-mining water quality. The geoenvironmental model identifies the Cu-skarn mineralization as the primary target for ARD management. Closure success will be limited by the geoenvironmental nature of the natural mineralization.

Surface mining has been used primarily where deposits of minerals were exposed or close to the surface. Surface mining can, therefore, be considered the oldest branch of mining. As the most accessible deposits became uneconomical because of the lack of suitable high capacity conveying systems, deep mining took its place. Only in the twentieth century was this trend reversed as high capacity production and conveying systems were developed. This rapid development was triggered by the steadily increasing demand for raw materials and fossil fuels, as well as by the ever increasing ratio between overburden and deposits.

Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.

The Cortez Mining District has had a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862 as previously reported (1) (2). More recently Cortez Gold Mines (i) has operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the U.S. for treating higher grade finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1520 tonnes per day on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. Starting in 1973, the mill was operated at 2050 tonnes per day on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres which is located 13 kilometers to the west of the Cortez installation. In February of 1976 the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operation. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Much valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs and is well described in an earlier publication (3). Releaching of the ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez was continued with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979.

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable. This paper is a brief status summary of investigations by the authors over the past decade to develop a continuous process for recovering' high purity metal powder from pregnant solutions by gaseous reduction at elevated temperatures and pressures. Although these studies included extraction of other metals such as nickel, silver, and gold, this presentation will be confined to the hydrogen reduction of acidic and ammoniacal solutions of copper. The continuous hydrogen reduction process (CHR) described herein enjoys the environmental advantages of other hydrometallurgical processes but, in addition, provides a substantial benefit in fuel economy over competing processes. As was recognized by Schaufelberger in 1956, for a given amount of fuel a continuous hydrogen reduction process has the potential for producing four to six times as much metal as an electrolysis process (1). Although hydrogen reduction of metal salt solutions has been known for more than a century, extensive development work leading to commercialization was not initiated until the 1950's. Since then, commercial applications relative to other extractive techniques have been minor and have been confined to batch or to continuous, completely-mixed autoclaves. By contrast, the process described herein utilizes a continuous, tubular reactor which is operated in modified plug flow so that only limited and localized backmixing occurs. Thus, gradients in concentration, temperature, and pressure exist over the length of the reactor, the presence of which can be utilized to advantage for achieving high conversions and product quality (2, 3).

This paper presents in detail the procedures followed and the results obtained in order to determine the stiffness parameters of the calcareous marls found in the lignite mines in Ptolemais, Northern Greece. Triaxial tests were performed on representative samples of the inner burden marl and the marl which underlies the lignite bearing series of the region. The tests were conducted under drained conditions, with controlled loading (including an unloading-reloading loop), while the axial strain was measured externally as well as with displacement transducers mounted directly on the specimen (Hall Effect sensors). The geotechnical parameters obtained (i.e., cohesion, angle of friction, stiffness modulus, stress-strain relationship), were subsequently used for simulating the triaxial testing with the Plaxis finite element software. Simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting material model can then be applied to modeling the mobility that is expressed during the excavation of the open pit mines.

"Instrumentation and monitoring of ground deformations in tunneling is a principal means for selecting and controlling the excavation and support methods among those foreseen in the design, for ensuring safety during tunnel construction (including personnel safety inside the tunnel and safety of structures located at ground surface) and, finally, for ensuring construction quality management. In this paper, the effect of Hakim Tunnel excavation on the behavior of the surrounding ground was investigated based on the geotechnical instrumentation. This tunnel with 1080 m length, 18 m width and 12.6 m height is being constructed using the SEM/NATM along the Hakim Highway in Tehran. The results which are obtained from recorded displacements by geodetic pins (on the tunnel wall and roof), extensometers and settlements pins (at the ground surface) demonstrate the tunnel stability during the various stages of excavation. However, it is concluded that the rate of excavation in different sequences could have a major role on stability of tunnel. In this case the surface and underground openings were monitored as well as needed for controlling the face probably collapse. INTRODUCTION Tunneling is increasingly being used world-wide to provide the infrastructure required for sustainable urban areas. The high demand for space and the disturbance of existing infrastructures by construction measures increasingly forces future infrastructure projects to be conducted underground. One of the important purposes of tunneling projects in urban area is not only to minimize displacements but also to control them during the construction (Pourhashemi et al., 2015). Normal method of tunnel stability analysis is not able to evaluate the real rock and soil mass behavior. Hence, instrumentation is a practical method to monitor displacements, to evaluate the stability of underground openings, and also to determine the rock and soil mass properties (Dehghan et al., 2012. Dehghan, 2013). Rocks and soils are materials with properties that can change instantly and significantly from one point to the next. Some complications may often happen due to uncertainties in the loads that the new facility must withstand during construction and operation. Instrumentation and monitoring provide quantitative information on actual behavior of ground and adjacent structures. A lot of deformation monitoring studies for determining and analyzing different kinds of engineering structures such as tunnels, bridges, high-rise buildings and dams are implemented. Mill design and project execution are very demanding and interactive processes requiring the dedication and cooperation of many parties. The development philosophy which lead to the successful completion of Ranchers Exploration and Development Corporation's Escalante silver mill is reviewed. The project spanned 25 months from initial feasibility studies to start-up with the major construction effort requiring only 4 months. Mill performance for the second and third months after start-up, as well as fiscal 1983, is compared against the design parameters. Capital and operating costs are also discussed.

Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

Two basic types of subsidence occur in Illinois: pit and sag / trough. Pits develop over mines less than 165 feet deep and where relatively incompetent strata are found over the mines. Sag subsidence is found over mines as shallow as 75 feet and more generally over mines of greater depths. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw associated with sag subsidence appear to be controlled by the rock properties at each specific site. The percentage of subsidence and angles of draw are smaller where the sites are not affected by geologic structures. An investigation to determine if a time factor based on the time interval from the date of mining to the subsidence events has shown that simple correlations with time, percent extraction, average pillar stresses, and pillar dimensions is not evident in Illinois.

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.
