The Department of Thoracic Surgery and Pathology at the Toronto General Hospital have had a long standing interest in the early detection and treatment of carcinoma of the lung. Our initial experience was with a population at risk due to a prolonged period of cigarette smoking. More recently our efforts have turned to industrial exposure, specifically in the nickel and uranium industries. [Initial Screening Project] (1) For a three year period 1963 to 1966 a cytology screening program was carried out through the Out-Patient Department. The study was limited to cigarette smokers over 40 in age. A total of 1586 patients were examined. Of the sputa collected, the classification is seen in Table 1. There were 11 malignant sputa present. Added to this number were 25 patients with symptoms, normal chest X-rays, but malignant cells on cytology, and a further 5 patients in whom an abnormality (eventually proven non-malignant) showed on X-ray, and sputum showed malignancy which was radio logically occult. (Table II). This gave a total of 41 patients with malignant sputum who were evaluated between 1960 and 1966. The clinical course of these patients is seen in Table III. Only 19 of 41 patients had localization and treatment of their tumour during that study period and this low rate of localization attests to the technical difficulties endoscopy in that day presented. The method of localization was as follows: a) 6 patients showed an area of segmental pneumonitis somewhere in this time period b) Using the rigid bronchoscope localized the tumour in 9. This was proven by direct biopsy, and frequently required more than one bronchoscopy over a prolonged time period. c) bronchograms and tomograms showed abnormalities in 5 patients. Of these 19 patients, 5 were treated by radiotherapy because of general condition or refusal of surgery. Three of the irradiated patients died of recurrent cancer within three years. The other two died within one year of unrelated disease. Fourteen patients underwent resection, with one operative mortality. At pathology, the tumours were "in situ" in 6 and invasive in 13. There was no evidence of nodal spread. When last followed up in 1979, there were no cases of recurrent tumour and no cases of second lung primary tumours. Similar experiences have been reported from the Mayo Clinic (2), Johns Hopkins (3) and Memorial Hospitals (4). Early detection of radiologically occult tumours which are in situ or minimally invasive has given uniformly good results. There have been no deaths from recurrent or metastatic cancer in surgically resected patients, and only one second primary tumour has been detected. Interestingly, the Hopkins group reports that 5 patients with Stage I squamous cell tumours refused operation. One refused any treatment and died of disease at 12 months. Three were radiated, and were alive from 14-38 months post-treatment, all with evidence of recurrent disease. [Sudbury Sintering Plant Study](5) From 1948 to 1963 an open travelling-grate sintering process was employed to convert nickel sulfide to nickel oxide at an International Nickel Company operation. The environment in this plant was particularly dusty and filled with fumes. It became apparent by 1969 that the incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma was markedly increased in workers from this plant. A concerted effort was made to track down all workmen with this exposure. During 1973 and 1974, 268 men were studied. Chest radiographs were done and showed no mass lesions. Sputum was collected on three consecutive days and analyzed. There were 12 men with malignant sputum, all of the squamous cell variety. Two refused any investigation, one presenting 31/2 years later with extensive hronchogenic carcinoma, and the other 5 years later with extensive carcinoma of the maxillary sinus. In the remaining ten patients careful rhinolaryngeal examination as well as a detailed bronchoscopy, involving examination, brushings and biopsy of all pulmonary segments was carried out. One patient was found to have laryngeal carcinoma and was treated by radiation. In nine patients, the malignancy was localized to the lung, leading to six lobectomies, two pneumonectomies and one sleeve lobectomy at operation. However, the follow-up in these cases suggests a different biological behaviour with these industrially related tumours. While no tumour has recurred locally, one patient has died of metastatic cancer and two patients have developed second and one patient a third pulmonary primary cancer. However, survival has still been much better than wits radiographically manifest lung cancer. The name Perlite applies to both a hydrated volcanic glass containing from 2% to 5% combined water and to the lightweight material that is produced from expanding the sized volcanic glass. Upon heating, Perlite expands to about twenty times its original volume which results in a material of low density, low thermal conductivity, and high sound absorpt'ion. Perlite ore is mined by open pit methods and is crushed and sized to provide specific gradations for expanding into products used in acoustical tile, built- up roofing, filtration, lightweight concrete and horticultural applications, among others. In 1983, the U.S. production of crude Perlite came from 12 mines and 6 western states, with apparent consumption and production estimated to be about 6% lower than 1982. The average price per ton was slightly higher than in 1982.

The concept of "classification is expanded beyond the performance of the classifying equipment to include all aspects of the fines removal system of the grinding circuit. Design and operating parameters which affect fines removal are identified and discussed, and a quantitative index for circuit fines removal effectiveness is defined. This approach lends new interpretation to certain observed phenomena, and suggests useful guidelines for circuit design and operation.

The Montana Operations of the Anaconda Company constitute an integrated, though geographically separated, non-ferrous metal production complex. The mines are located at Butte and consist of one large open-pit mine, two small underground mines, a precipitation plant for both underground and pit-dump leach water, and the Weed Copper Concentrator. The smelter, located at Anaconda, Montana 25 miles to the west, processes all Butte copper shipments as well as copper materials from both Anaconda and private mines. Copper and zinc are refined at Great Falls, Montana, 165 miles to the north. Other facilities developed over the years include the Anaconda Forest Products Division, the Butte, Anaconda, and Little. Chicago Water Companies, and the Montana Hardware Company. Data processing for these operations has been performed on an IBM 360 Series, Model 30 computer, utilizing a Disc Operating System. This was replaced in September 1970 with a 360 Series, Model 40 128K unit. In addition, some data processing is also done for Anaconda Company operations located at Britannia Beach, British Columbia; Columbia Falls, Montana; Yerington, Nevada; and Twin Buttes and Tuscon, Arizona. The material under discussion in this paper will be concerned primarily with the mining operations at Butte.

"The topic of ground movements in Germany has been studied extensively in the past, especially in the field of active mines. The active hard coal mines were finally shut down in 2018 in Germany and lignite mining is expected to take place only until 2038. The so-called long-term liabilities of the mine operators in Germany include, among other things, the long-term guarantee of stability and thus the monitoring of ground motion.So far, the economic use of underground mining in Germany was mainly the supply of raw materials. In the future, the underground storage of compressed air, methane, or hydrogen will play an important role in renewable energy supply and climate change. Therefore, underground storage space will become more important and spatial planning is essential to ensure availability of safe underground openings for the various options of environmentally friendly energy storage.However, this renewed usage of underground openings may also bring new and sometimes unknown challenges of geomechanical influence. On the one hand, the aftermath of hard coal and lignite mining will be an increasing challenge in mining subsidence engineering. On the other hand, new possibilities due to underground spatial planning may lead to subsidence and/or heaving of the upper surface.INTRODUCTIONBoth hard coal and lignite have a long tradition in Germany. The Prosper Haniel mine in the Ruhr area was closed at the end of 2018 after 150 years, which signalled the end of hard coal production in Germany. Lignite mining still takes place in the Central German, Lausitz, and Rhineland districts. However, lignite mining in Germany is expected to be phased out gradually by 2038 (MDR, 2019). With the closure of these mines, however, mining damage is not over. The long-term consequences of mining, which extend far beyond the closure of the mines, are associated with the liability and responsibility of the individual mining companies. The so-called eternity burdens on the mining company continue to apply. In the field of lignite production, the discontinuation of dewatering and the resulting possible elevations of the surface will be a relevant topic for the future of mine surveying. The same applies to the hard coal mines, which are partially flooded in Germany and therefore require extensive monitoring of soil movements in the future.The discontinuation of energy from hard coal and lignite calls for a change in the energy mix. With the renewable energy revolution in Germany, the focus is on a sustainable and environmentally compatible climate and energy policy based on renewable energies. Sustainable use of the subsoil, both natural and anthropogenically produced cavities, will play an essential role in the objectives of this policy. For example, disused mine cavities can be used to store electricity from renewable energy sources. (Umwelt Bundesamt, 2018) These functions will again cause classical ground movements such as subsidence and uplift, but will also bring new challenges for the mine surveyor. Challenges can be underground cavity exploration in inaccessible areas or legal aspects of underground competition."

In order to rapidly evaluate an area for its mineral potential, a reconnaissance exploration program generally includes the following: 1. Outlining an area of interest 2. Identifying known mineral deposits 3. Bibliographic search of the literature 4. Evaluation of geochemical and geophysical surveys 5. Compilation and review of geologic maps The information now available from various government agencies regarding the mineral deposits, geology, and geochemistry may be integrated and used as a tool to rapidly evaluate an area before the field season. The databases most commonly used in the United States are the USBM MAS/HILS system and the USGS MRDS system for their information on mineral deposits; GEOREF and GEOARCHIVE for bibliographic information; and NURE data for the geochemistry and geophysics. In conjunction with the project geologist, this information may be used to plot known deposits and their geochemical signature as well as any other areas of like signature for further examination.

Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center&apos;s 900-lb/hr pilot plant, approximately 85 percent of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to <1,000 ppm equivalent Si02, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of 516 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water.

PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.

A laboratory experimental research project was conducted to evaluate the use of chlorine for the oxidative destruction of residual ammonia which may remain in ground water after in-situ uranium solution mining operations. The work tested the idea of the injection of high strength calcium hypochlorite solution into the mining zone to convert ammonia to nitrogen gas as a final clean-up process for ammonia removal from the ground water system. The paper details ammonia removal efficiency as a function of chlorine dose, reactant and product material balances, and how the concept may be used as a final ground water restoration process.

In 1970, of the 603 million tons of coal produced in the United States, 339 million tons, or 56%, were produced by under- ground mines. While the ratio of underground to surface production has been decreasing in the last few years, it is anticipated that a 60:40 ratio of underground to surface-mined coal will remain for some time. Underground coal operators are continuing to invest in new mines and are interested in increasing the efficiency of all their operations. One area for improvement is in mine planning and design, particularly in the area of selection of equipment for operation. Because of the availability of a wide variety of equipment, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, such a choice must be made on the basis of technological facts and forecasts related to the mining operation. If the mining conditions can be reasonably predicted, along with a mining plan, it should be possible to insure the selection of the right equipment for the particular application. In order to increase the efficiency of underground coal operations, it is necessary to understand not only the operating system in detail, but the inter-relationships between system components and the operating environment. With such an understanding comes the application of simulation and other operations research techniques to plan and operate mining systems. Computer simulation studies have been successfully adapted to underground coal mining, and applications by Prelaz et al. (1965), and Manula and Sanford (1969) are some that are being used by the mining companies. However, a need still exists for better understanding of certain intra-system and system-environment interactions in order that computer simulation programs may be provided with better input data for more effective application. This paper deals with one aspect of the coal-winning system in need of better definition, namely, studying the performance of continuous miners.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor&apos;s pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. A full survey of the laboratory and blast-furnace tests on 2 types of acid pellets is given. From the laboratory tests, carried out in an atmosphere containing hydrogen, it appears that type B, produced out of 100% magnetitic ores, has a far better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A, produced from a hematite/magnetite mixture. The swelling index, chemical composition and mechanical properties of both types of pellets do not differ significantly. From the blast-furnace test, carried out with a burden consisting of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter with basicsty ratio about 2.2, and at constant driving rate, it follows that there is no significant relationship between the disintegration value of the pellets and the blast-furnace permeability. If also is concluded that the lower reducibility of the type B pellets leads to a significantly higher coke consumption.

The Bear Creek Uranium Mill was designed in 1975 to process 909 tonnes per day (1000 STPD) of low-grade uranium ore from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. The mill was expanded to 1818 tonnes per day (2000 STPD) in 1979. The Bear Creek Uranium Project is owned by the Bear Creek Uranium Company, a partnership of Rocky Mountain Energy Company and Mono Power Company. The original mill design contemplated processing ores from Bear Creek Uranium Company properties exclusively. The expanded capacity has been utilized for tolling ores from Kerr McGee Nuclear Corp. and other mining companies in the region. This paper describes the process of designing the original mill, the lessons learned from operation, and the design of the process modifications required for expansion. The project background, design philosophy, design basis, design criteria, actual flowsheet, special design considerations, and a comparison of assumed operating conditions and actual operating results will be presented. Bear Creek Uranium Company wishes to thank and acknowledge the help granted by the many operating companies who provided invaluable information, insight, and critique of the Bear Creek design through all the various stages and were instrumental in the successful completion and start-up of the mill. Without their contributions, the design philosophy used at Bear Creek would not have been possible and the results obtained would surely have been less satisfactory.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

A National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-funded project (NASA Grant #NAG13-02026) is underway to determine the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map mineralogy that affects water quality within a watershed and to identify the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic sources to that drainage. Natural sources, particularly areas of pyritic hydrothermal alteration, have been found by the Colorado Geological Survey to be a significant source, sometimes the only source, for acidity and/or metals in a number of areas of Colorado (Neubert, 2000). This situation undoubtedly occurs in many places in the Western United States and elsewhere where metallic mineralization occurs. Anthropogenic sources arise from mining and other human activities that increase the exposure of acid-generating materials to weathering processes, thereby increasing acidity and metal loading to drainages where that activity is occurring or has occurred. This project is attempting to determine if these sources can be differentiated through mineralogical analysis, in conjunction with surface water chemistry that controls the precipitated minerals, of the impacted drainages by remote sensing techniques.

Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick&apos;s Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger&apos;s Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond&apos;s Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger&apos;s Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. Microtunneling methods were utilized beneath pile-supported clarifier basins to replace settlement damaged sludge drain lines at the Jones Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To minimize the risk of blockage and expensive recovery of a microtunnel boring machine against pipe piles or construction debris, a Soltau RVS 80 was utilized. This machine allowed the alignment to be initially bored with guided 114-mm diameter rods to ensure proper alignment and lack of obstructions. Casing pipe was then installed by jacking 1-m long, 305-mm diameterclay pipe along the rods and behind an auger head. This case history also discusses how 2.4-m diameter precast concrete pipe was used as a one-pass sinking caisson for workshafts and new cleanout manholes.

The Bradshaw Section 5A Interceptor involves the construction of two miles of 108-inch, finished diameter tunnel in dry soils. Excavation is generally by Lovat TBM with ribs and lagging support. The tunnel is beneath a recreational parkway and stringent measures have been enacted to preserve the parkway and minimize disruption to the neighborhood. Apart from these constraints, the project would have been unremarkable but for the intervention of CalOSHA and the local fire department who ordered extraordinary fire protection measures. The shape of particles has a significant effect on the shear strength and deformational characteristics of granular materials. Weathering can change the grain shapes. For example, more weathered sands tend to be rounder regardless of particle size. Particle shape analysis was performed on samples collected from the Questa mine rock piles, a debris flow and the pit alteration scar. In order to increase the validity of the particle shape analysis, 4 persons including 2 geologists and 2 mining engineers were involved in describing the particle shapes. The results of this analysis indicate that rock fragments in the collected samples are mainly subangular, subdiscoidal and subprismoidal. The sphericity and angularity of the rock fragments of the older analogs are similar to those of the rock piles. This suggests that short-term weathering (<100 years) has not noticeably changed the particle shapes at the test locations. Rock piles made of more angular particles are more stable compared to rock piles with rounded particles.
