The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

Currently, there are several methodologies to assess ground vibrations from blasting. Of all available methodologies, one that is becoming more important is the waveform superposition or signature hole technique. This technique is based on a signature waveform assigned to each hole to build the complete waveform for the whole production blast, using the convolution between the time initiation sequence and the signature hole waveform. In the basic methodology of the signature hole technique, the waveform hole-to-hole is assumed to be the same. Several studies and field tests have proven that the waveform hole-to-hole, even in ideal rock mass conditions (rock mass with little or no joint system), changes. In addition to distance or confinement, other factors that could change the waveform hole-to-hole include different geologic paths from the source to the monitoring point and a different energy output of each hole, due to hole loading, explosive composition and/or contamination, priming, etc. These factors result in varying waveforms generated for each hole, making the waveform produced by each hole a somewhat random process. There is available in the literature some proposals to include variability in the waveform hole-to-hole, but the parameters involved are complex and difficult to estimate. In this paper, the variability in the signature waveform hole-to-hole in a blast event was recorded through a field test, and a proposal to include signature waveform variability to develop an equation based on the Fourier series is presented. This methodology is the basis for a future signature hole analysis using a Monte Carlo scheme, taking into account the variation of the amplitude and the frequency content of the waveform hole-to-hole in a production blast event.

The flow field and coal combustion process in a pilot-scale iron ore pelletizing kiln is simulated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The objective of the work is to investigate how the thermal effects from the flame affect the flow field. As expected, the combustion process with the resulting temperature rise and volume expansion leads to an increase of the velocity in the kiln. Apart from that, the overall flow field looks similar regardless of whether combustion is present or not. The flow field though affects the combustion process by controlling the mixing rates of fuel and air, governing the flame propagation. This shows the importance of correctly predicting the flow field in this type of kiln, with a large amount of process gas circulating, in order to optimize the combustion process. The results also justify the use of down-scaled, geometrically similar, water models to investigate kiln aerodynamics in general and mixing properties in particular. Even if the heat release from the flame is neglected, valuable conclusions regarding the flow field can still be drawn.

Introduction Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock-fragmentation mechanism of continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting-drum rotational speed. This paper presents a discussion of the effects of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation. The removal of rock ridges/walls between adjacent grooves is analyzed with three hits mounted simultaneously on the cutting head, while the bit tip angle was varied from 600 to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 25.4 to 50.8 mm (1 to 2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dusts generated during the course of the experiments were analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism of continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. A review of the literature revealed that a considerable amount of research has been carried out on rockcutting processes. Many authors agree that the mechanical cutting efficiencies of mining machines (e.g., continuous miners, shearers and road headers) are affected by a host of parameters. Some of these parameters are machine controlled, some are operator controlled, while others are uncontrollable. Efforts were focused on understanding the influence of parameters such as bit spacing, cutting depth, attack angle, bit type, drum speed, bit geometry (i.e., tip size, shape and tip angle) and rock type on the cutting process efficiency in terms of specific energy consumption and respirable dust generation (Strehig?? et al., 1975, Hanson et al., 1979, Khair et al., 1989). Roepke et al. (1976) in an attempt to study the dust and energy generated during coal cutting using point attack bits found that the dust and the specific energy consumed both decrease as the depth of cut increases. The four fundamental stages of dust generation luring rock fragmentation are identified by Zipf and Bieniawski (1989). Coal breakage by various types of wedges was assessed by Evans and Pomeroy (1966) in an extensive experimental study on British coals. Yet the industry today requires further attention and guidance to optimize the energy consumption and dust generation during the rockbreakage process. This paper attempts to give a better understanding of the influence of some of the parameters listed above and focuses on further improvement in the rock-cutting process. The specific energy consumed for different types of bits used and the respirable dust generated are analyzed in the context of the variation of a few other parameters. Laboratory investigation The experiments were performed in the Rock Mechanics Laboratories located at West Virginia University. A rock-cutting simulator designed and fabricated by Khair (1984) was utilized for this purpose. The details of this machine are available in the literature (see Khair 1984). For this study, a series of preliminary experiments was carried out to determine the optimum cutting frame advance speed. This was intended to facilitate a maximum cut depth of 31.75 mm (1.25 in.) at an advance rate of 0.525 mm/s (0.0207 ips) for all types of bits being used and various bit spacings being considered. To look into the cutting-process efficiency of a continuous miner in the laboratory, several parameters of influence are being considered. Besides the bit-geometry parameters, machine- and operator-controlled parameters, such as spacing of bits on the cutting head, the cutting head rotational speed and the total cutting depth during an experiment, are varied. At the time this paper was written, only part of the completed experiments were ana¬lyzed, and a number of experiments were still being carried out following an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental plan to assess the effect of all of the above¬mentioned parameters on the cutting efficiency in terms of energy consumption and dust generation. Three different types of tip angles, namely, 60°, 75° and 90°, and two different tip sizes, namely, diameters of 7.94 and 24.61 mm (0.313 and 0.969 in.), were used. At

That phrase remains today as the guiding principle that governs our total approach to safety and well being in U. S. Steel. U. S. Safety is a state of mind but like most things it must have a physical side - both intertwined and inseparable. You might say each promotes the other; and this gives us confidence that with hard work, cooperation from all individuals, and proper application of knowledge and experience, our ultimate objective of frequency "0" will be attained. It is in this vein of thought we present a paper today which gives you briefly our progress, mainly in the physical, or mechanical, protection of miners at work in the Southern District mining operations of U. S. Steel. The Southern District not only includes the underground mining of coal but the underground mining of zinc ore in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and the quarrying of dolomitic limestone near Bessemer, Alabama.

The Shoreline Consolidation Sewer is a CSO control project in Cleveland, Ohio that requires the installation of 5,000 feet of 72-inch inside diameter pipe using microtunneling methods. After award, the contractor submitted a value engineering proposal to eliminate two deep shafts and install the tunnel in two drives instead of four. In an example of successful collaboration, owner, contractor, and engineer worked together during the initial construction stages to modify the design and update the contract documents. This paper examines the importance of exible requirements in contract documents and a collaborative environment between all parties to successfully deliver a project.

The United States Forest Service, as a land managing agency, is responsible for the surface administration of National Forest lands. The basic objectives of management are protection and utilization of renewable resources such as water, forage, timber, wildlife, recreation, and clean air. Much of the National Forest land in this country is open to mineral prospecting and development. When large de-posits of minerals are extracted from the forest environment, especially by surface methods, there are oftentimes conflicts between accepted mining methods and the objectives of other resource management goals. Such is the situation in Southeast Idaho where several members of the phosphate industry are operating on and adjacent to the Caribou National Forest. In 1966, the phosphate industry and the Caribou National Forest became mutually concerned with the problems of rehabilitating mined areas and minimizing potential damage to adjacent forest areas. A Cooperative Administrative Study was initiated with industry supporting the Forest Service financially and with equipment, material, and manpower, as well as interest and enthusiasm. The objectives of the study are to provide basic, applicable information pertinent to: 1. Protecting the quality of water emanating from mined water-sheds. 2. Providing for soil stabilization on mined areas. 3. Returning mined areas to surface resource production. 4. The feasibility of making mined areas esthetically acceptable. It was concluded that the following separate--yet intergrated--fields should be studied in order to obtain the desired information:

Early in the 60's the author served as Chairman of the Engineering Foundation's Coordinating Committee on Air Pollution Research. One of our objectives was the development of a study on the measurement of stack emissions. Three publications of the Foundation resulted from these efforts to focus attention on the stack sampling problem.1,2,3 Two of these were annotated bibliographies covering 197 references. The third reported the results of a workshop meeting at which some 21 individuals from research institutes, industry and government discussed the possible and probable areas of research that would add to or increase the ease, precision and utility of sampling gaseous and particulate matter emitted from stacks. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has had in its Power Test Codes a Standard Code for Determining the Dust Concentration in a Gas stream4 since 1941, The American Industrial Hygiene Association has published, in its Air Pollution Manual,5 a Section on Stack Sampling. Industry and regulatory agency requirements for stack sampling have utilized some modification of the alternatives in methodology. A typical problem in ventilation networks with multiple fan systems is the possibility of them interacting. Multiple fan systems are no exceptions in complex tunnels, and may also be met in mines where underground fans are installed. When aiming at controlling a multiple fan system in a ventilation network, e.g. with a view to maintaining an acceptable air quality level, yet at minimum power consumption, transient flow conditions frequently occur. Although in most applications these transients are short compared to the time needed to achieve the planned actions on the ventilation, one should, however, keep in mind that it is important to avoid any bouncing effect between different (adjacent or distant) fan systems. Therefore a simulation of the unsteady-state flows could allow us to learn more about the propagation of transients within the network, and their possible secondary effects Among others, one question that often is raised, is to find out in which sequence and at what time schedule each of the fans in a network should e.g. be started up? Another typical problem, into which an unsteady-state simulation could provide some insight is the following: how should the facilities of variable pitch angle and/or changeable RPM of several fans operating in parallel be handled and combined in order to obtain a flow rate that changes gradually from zero to its maximum value i.e. the sum of the individual throughput flows of all the fans. The literature is not very abundant on the topic of simulating transient flows in networks. There is no doubt that numerical models have been developed (Pollak, Christensen, 1987), most of the time for particular applications (Wala, Kim, 1985), (Tanaskovic et al., 1984), (Schultz, Sockel, 1991), etc. The aim of this paper is to present a model that also simulates one-dimensional compressible flows in unsteady-state conditions with, however, the specific intent to handle networks with more than one fan. PROBLEM STATEMENT The mathematical model chosen to describe the unsteady flows in a ventilation network is based on the dynamic and continuity equations applied to each of its airways. The following basic assumptions are made : - the flow in the airway is considered to be one- dimensional, - - the flow is assumed to be fully turbulent, and hence the ATKINSON equation for calculating the friction losses will be applied. Whether this equation remains valid for transient state flows remains an open question. However, this may reasonably be assumed since the interesting flow frequencies are low. A discussion may be found in (Kämpf, 1987) ; - the airways are assumed to have a constant cross- sectional area along their length. If obviously this would not be the case, it is always possible to subdivide the concerned airway into sections for which the previous assumption holds. Applying the basic equations of mass and energy conservation, the flow in each branch may be described by the Euler equation for Newtonian flows.

It has been observed in some mineral processing plants that grinding circuit efficiency varies seasonally, such as in some plants which are located in the northern U. S. and Canada and undergo large seasonal temperature changes, with the grinding circuit efficiency different between summer and winter. This indicates that the temperature of grinding circuit slurry has a noticeable effect on grinding performance. The effect has rarely been studied. To this end, an investigation to examine the effects of changing temperature on efficiency and determination of the mechanism responsible has been carried out. Plant investigations and laboratory experiments have been conducted in order to study hydrocyclones. It was demonstrated that under otherwise constant operating conditions, the d50(c), size decreased linearly with increasing temperature, while the shape of the reduced efficiency curve remained constant. This effect was determined to be due to changes in slurry viscosity with temperature.

Fault tree analysis is a systematic safety analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an undesired event (accident) to the identification of the root causes of that event. One recurring mine safety problem-a dozer falling into a void over a drawpoint on a coal surge pile-was analyzed using available, inexpensive fault tree programs on a personal computer. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between these various subordinate events as well as the various chain of events leading up to the primary event. A sensitivity analysis on these probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile.

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

Kaolin clay from Late Permian sequences has been considered a potential resource for niobium (Nb) due to high concentrations reported at several hundred micrograms per gram and large areal distribution. A previous case study identified titanium (Ti)-bearing minerals associated with kaolin clay as the main host phases for niobium. Correlation between the Nb and Ti concentrations was poor, however, and the types of Ti-bearing minerals and modes of Nb occurrence were unclear. To investigate this, typical kaolin clay samples from Late Permian sequences in southwest China were characterized, and final products derived from them were investigated using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results revealed three types of titanium dioxide (TiO2) mineral phases in the clay samples: (1) massive TiO2 minerals, (2) aggregates of nano TiO2 minerals and (3) granular TiO2 minerals. The first two did not contain niobium. From the EDS analysis, the granular TiO2 minerals, including anatase and rutile, were the source of Nb in the kaolin clay samples.

The Paso Diablo coal project is located in the Guasare Basin in the northwestern region of Venezuela near the border with Colombia. In 1987, Carbones del Guasare SA, a joint venture comprised of Carbozulia and A.A. Antilles Coal (an Arco and AgipCoal joint venture) was formed to develop the Paso Diablo coal reserves for world markets. Regional drilling has indicated a coal resource of more than 6 Gt (6.6 billion st). Further exploration has delineated the Paso Diablo deposit as an area particularly suited for cost-effective surface mining. The calculated economically minable reserves of this area (200 Mt or 220 million st) and the coal quality characteristics are based on extensive core drilling programs. Initial coal mining operations began in August of 1987 and the mine is presently producing at a rate of 1.5 Mt/a (1.65 million stpy). The coal is hauled about 85 km (53 miles) to a barge loading terminal at Santa Cruz de Mara using highway-type haul trucks. "A commercially available Through-the-Earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electric field (E-field) sensing to send text based communications using two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multi-site evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. INTRODUCTION Wireless, Through-the-Earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point to point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. This ability allows TTE communication to function without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure, such as repeaters. As a result, such communication systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Wadley 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer 1973; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate through a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker 2006; Geyer and Keller 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers 1928; Jakosky and Zellers 1924; Yenchek et al. 2012)."

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro NC treating crude Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade Zinc by a hydrometallurgical process, comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent a build-up of cadmium in the circuit. Silica, although not present at significant levels in the WOX feed material (approximately 0.3%), had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also impacted. The silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit in an attempt to identify the source of the silica issues. Adjustments including using PLS as feed to cementation, pH control in WOX leaching and neutralization have been introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. INTRODUCTION Located in North Carolina, Horsehead Metal Products Inc. is a hydrometallurgical zinc refinery processing Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex® process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment as illustrated in Figure 1. Cadmium cementation, part of the bleed treatment process, provides an essential bleed of cadmium from the circuit, as metallic cement. The Cadmium cementation circuit consists of agitated cementation reactors, a zinc dust addition system, filter presses, agitated purification (releach) reactors and a cadmium concentrate filter press Silica can be found in several forms in acid leaching. The first form is fine silicate particles. The size of the particles can vary from one to twenty microns (1). Fine silicate particles can lead to the formation of crud in solvent extraction circuits (2, 3). At Mooresboro, crud has been observed in Depletion, which is part of the solvent extraction circuit. Silica content in the solution in this section is high. The second form of silica is monosilicic acid Si(OH)4, which begins to polymerize almost immediately upon being leached into solution. Monosilicic acid polymerizes to silica gel or a silica precipitate dependent primarily on supersaturation (5). Factors that influence the rate of polymerization include temperature, sulfuric acid concentration / pH, hydrofluoric acid concentration, seeding, and dissolved salts concentration such as zinc and aluminum in the solution (4, 5, 6). In sulfate systems, silica solubility is reported in the range of 150 to 450 ppm of SiO2 (3, 5, 7)."

The new 9300 TPD sinter plant being built for China Steel Corporation is incorporating the latest computer technology for plant control systems. The control system will use a central computer and distributed micro-processors to control instrument loops and switching logic in the blending yard and sintering plant. All plant functions, including combustion and fan controls, will be controlled by remote microprocessors located throughout the plant, and connected by a communications link to the centrally located computer and control room. The design, programming, construction and operation of a microprocessor based control system presents new challenges to the control engineer. With microprocessors in the control system, more power exists in the individual control loop and many supervisory functions may be added at the loop level. The specification of the microprocessor system and the resolution of hardware design and control system design can lead to development of powerful systems capable of higher level control and optimization functions

To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding-type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high, causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concern for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents an impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development and laboratory testing of a waterproof coated impact-resistant lagging panel and (3) impactresistant steel set design based on the law of conservation of energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.
