Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."

Principles of Operation and Mechanical Features General Mechanical Description Sieve-bend screens are high-capacity screening devices which utilize stationary, concave, wedge-bar screening surfaces. A complete sieve bend is comprised of a feed distribution chamber, a structure for holding the screen surface, and collection chambers or chutes for oversize and undersize materials. In devices used for metallurgical practice, provision is usually made for reversal of the direction of flow over the surface, either by rotating the surface or by changing the feed nozzle position. The size of the unit varies in height from 5 to 8 ft, and in width from 2 to 8 ft. The orientation of the wedge-bar surface is such that the slots between the wedge bars are perpendicular to the flow of feed material over the surface. The feed distribution means is arranged such that the flow of liquid suspension is distributed evenly and tangentially over the width of the screen surface. The Chino Mines Co., a Kennecott- Mitsubishi partnership, located in Hurley, NM, recently completed a $405 million modernization of its mine, concentrator, and smelter facilities. The mine/concentrator modernization commenced in 1980, and the smelter modernization began during 1982. Modernization of the mine and concentrator facilities involved increasing the mining rate from 98 kt/d (108,000 stpd) to 152.2 kt/d (167,800 stpd). Ore mining was designed to increase production from 20.2 kt/d (22,300 stpd) to 34 kt/d (37,500 stpd). A new concentrator was con- structed near the mine using semiautogenous grinding. The new smelter uses the INCO flash smelting process, increasing capacity by 40.8 kt/a (45,000 stpy) to 99.8 kt/a (110,000 stpy) of saleable copper.

"SUMMARY While the basic elements of risk management, including probability, consequences, risk registers, mitigation measures, etc., are now well understood, the process to include correlation, dependencies and linkage of risks and risk scenarios is less well defined and not well understood. To perform accurate and complete risk analysis and risk management, it is necessary to include correlation, dependencies and linkage between risk events, as well as risks that may occur multiple times. In this way, owners and contractors can more accurately determine risk-based costs, risk impacts and risk mitigation strategies. This paper will outline methods to deal with correlation, dependencies and linkage and will consider risks that may occur multiple times. Practical result comparisons – with or without these elements – will be presented. INTRODUCTION We believe the reader is familiar with basic concepts of risk, risk management and mitigation and the use of probabilistic cost-risk processes versus deterministic ones (Reilly et al. 2015; Sander et al. 2015). The probabilistic approach, compared to the simpler and more common deterministic approach (unit prices times unit costs plus a contingency), offers more useful information with respect to the range of probable cost as well as cost “drivers” and better quantifies the effects of risks, opportunities and variability – which improves understanding, leading to a better potential for profit (or loss) for contractors and added value for owners. In this context, a valid and sufficient quantification of correlation, dependencies and linkage of risk events, plus the impact of risks that may occur multiple times, is essential. Components of Cost Estimates – Base Cost, Risks and Other Uncertainties The components of cost that need to be correctly addressed in an estimate include (Moergeli et al. 2015): •,Base costs – the costs that will result if “all goes according to plan” (Reilly 2004) •,Risk costs – the resulting costs of threat and opportunity events, if they should occur •,Escalation costs – costs resulting from normally expected inflation with variability •,Other uncertain costs – costs that result from other events, normally external to the project team’s control, which may include unanticipated events, politically related changes and “black swan” events (Talib 2007)"

The movement to reclaim abandoned mine sites has gained momentum as federal, state, and private organizations have increased their commitment and resources to tackle mutual, and often controversial, problems of health and safety. Numerous interorganizational agreements have been implemented to promote cooperation in the characterization of mine site hazards, development of mutually acceptable plans of remediation, and sharing of actual cleanup requirements. Working through these partnerships, the federal land management agencies have begun to focus on abandoned mine reclamation in selected, priority watersheds and other drainage basins. Although there are major difficulties to overcome, significant progress continues to be made.

Political issues and a glaring infrastructure deficiency have retarded the emergence of a strong mining component to the Alaskan economy in recent years. Barriers to orderly mineral development are slowly being removed attendant upon changing political circumstances. Infrastructure development, as an investment avenue as well as a responsibility of the State, is receiving much greater attention than in the past. Alaska of course has a rich and varied mining history going back to the 19th Century. This paper, however, focuses on the mining potential, not the mining heritage of the 49th State. The mining industry is emerging from a nadir in the economic cycle - times during which it was buffeted by unsympathetic administrations and confused and confounded by the protracted land status- conflicts prior to enactment; of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and other milestone legislation. Today Alaska's mining industry looks toward a bright and healthy future and, in the process, will become a very important and vital component of the State and national economy.

Bench-scale laboratory flotation and gravity separation tests were conducted on tailings samples to remove the sulfidic material, mainly pyrite, the source of acid generation. A combination of xanthate collectors, promoters, and frothers were used during flotation. Pyrite recoveries were in the range of 42 to 97%, depending on the tailings being treated. Sulfide sulfur contents of 12.8 to 0.37% in the feeds were reduced to 8.68 to 0.01% in the treated tails. Flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the ARD potential as a function of percent pyrite remaining in the tails. Standard ARD predictive tests were used to evaluate the success of the treatment. In some cases, removal of only 50 to 55% of the pyritic fraction was required, thereby demonstrating the conversion of the waste material from acidic to non-acidic. A laboratory vanning table was used to evaluate the amenability of sulfide-bearing tailings samples to gravity separation. The pyrite recoveries varied from 38 to 86%. The sulfide sulfur content of 12.8 to 0.37% in the feeds was reduced to 6.0 to 0.14% in the treated tails. Predictive ARD tests performed on tailings before and after the gravity removal of pyrite showed that most samples changed from "probably" acid producing to the "uncertain" range. Data reported and analyzed in this paper demonstrate source control for ARD prevention through the removal of metal sulfides from sulfide-bearing wastes using conventional flotation and gravity separation techniques.

The Moris gold deposit resides in a massive ridge-forming sulfide-poor epithermal quartz and calcite vein system and consists of a mineable reserve of four million tons of 2.1gm Au/ton. Post-mineral normal faulting along the hanging wall of the main fissure has caused a hogback-like exposure of the vein, allowing for inexpensive opencut mining. The vein formed between pre-Cretaceous(?) phyllitic clastic sedimentary units in the footwall and Tertiary andesitic volcanic rocks in the hanging wall. Part of the ore reserve is hosted in a Tertiary conglomerate that rests unconformably atop the phyllitic footwall sequence. The original unoxidized vein material contained substantially less than 1 gram Au/ton. A four-fold upgrading of gold occurred by enrichment when gold recrystallization took place in the electric fields of oxidizing pyrite cubes.

"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. The detection and quantification of invisible gold by microbeam techniques is discussed. Ion probe microanalysis is used to quantify the gold content of individual sulphide, sulpharsenide and oxide particles with a detection limit of 0.2 ppmw (g/t). The proton microprobe is used to determine the gold concentration of gangue minerals with a detection limit of 2 - 4 ppm. Using these techniques complete mineralogical balances for gold are obtained to assist in the process selection and optimization. A total of twenty gold and gold-bearing ores have been examined. Selected examples are presented.

In this study, domestic molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) concentrate was roasted in a chamber furnace and then in a rotary kiln. The behavior of the roasting process was examined in both furnaces, and which type of furnace is more advantageous to use in mass production was investigated. It is theoretically possible to roast in a chamber furnace, but a major problem was observed when the amount of concentrate was increased in the chamber-furnace experiments. The problem was solved by using a rotary kiln. This study improves the understanding of the roasting of  MoS2 concentrate and presents a different perspective to the industry, showing that rotary kilns can also be used for roasting.

The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8- µm aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 µm diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.

At the Beckley Mine in southern West Virginia, forecasting unstable roof conditions in advance of mining is accomplished by using a rating system that combines historical information on mine roof failures with known mine geology. Failure frequency rates are derived for each category of roof rock composition, unit thickness, structure, and extraction ratio. In this manner, known geological environments are rated according to instability based on actual experience. Drill hole control and geological interpretation provide the basis for forecasting unstable conditions beyond working faces. The forecasting technique has assisted mine management in reducing fall frequencies by 80% over the past two years compared to the first five years of operation. This reduction in fall frequency was accomplished by modifying the plan of advancing sections to minimize mining exposure to unstable roof conditions.

The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . The study examines the impact of different drawbell geometries on hang-ups during ore extraction in underground mining. Using the discrete element method, the research compares three drawbell geometries: drawer, circular, and El Teniente. The findings indicate that the El Teniente geometry experienced more hang-up events, while the circular geometry had fewer.

Much has been said about digital computer control of metal and mineral ore dressing processes, but little has been done. This pa- per discusses what practical use can be made today of a digital computer in an ore concentrator and how such application can be made successfully. A hypothetical, but commercially common, grinding and flotation circuit is presented in terms of analog measurements which can and are being made in existing plants and a centralized computer control system which is reasonable in terms of today's technology. Dangers and possible disadvantages of such an approach are discussed as well as estimated benefits. Possible future benefits are presented in terms of improved control technology. Development of new measuring devices is not considered as a criterion for computer benefits. The control systems described have been utilized successfully in existing ore dressing operations. However, the degree of success or failure of analog systems is generally left to the interpretation of management rather than absolute analysis. Many factors affect the economic operation of a mineral recovery circuit such as size of facility, flow sheet design, number of operating personnel, percent of recoverable mineral in the ore body, loss to tails, and haulage rates. In existing mills where little or no instrumentation has been used, it is extremely difficult to prove or disprove the advantage of analog control systems on one mill line versus its sisters due to the lack of standards and the lack of ability to separate final products by ton.

The transformation of raw iron ore into high quality steel can take place via several processes. A general consistent theme involves the upgrading of the iron ores via methods such as flotation and magnetic separation, the preparation of an agglomerate such as via pelletization or sintering, the smelting of the agglomerate into a high grade iron product, and the further refining of iron into specific steel alloys. Each of these steps admit potential for optimizations and alternatives, and the process overall is critical to meeting the world’s continuing iron demands.

This paper analyzes the 1982 coal mine accident data collected by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for key equipment types, by mine type, and by geographic region. The differences in hazards associated with the various equipment types are studied both in absolute (i.e., total number of incidences) and relative (i.e., incidence rate or the number of incidences per 200,000 employee or exposure hours) terms. The paper compares and contrasts the total number of incidents as well as incidence rates classified by several types of severity measures such as lost workdays cases, mean number of lost workdays per lost workdays case, fatal cases, non- fatal cases without lost workdays, total number of cases, and total number of lost workdays This statistical analysis shows that significant differences in hazards exist not only due to equipment type but also due to mine type and geographic region.
