Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers abroad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion. Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistry can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis complements bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect. This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly.

New South Wales has a successful history of pillar extraction stretching back more than 60 years. Various methods of pillar extraction ranging from the rib pillar methods (such as the Wongawilli system) to the more recent pillar stripping techniques (similar to those used in the USA) are discussed in this paper. These discussions are based on the experiences of the author stemming from a recent research tour of seven underground pillar extraction operations in New South Wales as part of the Coaltech 2020 collaborative research initiative. Some operational issues of each site visited are presented before some general comments pertaining to the overall success of pillar extraction in New South Wales are discussed. Generally pillar extraction in New South Wales is on the decline in favour of longwalling. However, the pillar extraction that is conducted is done so along specific guidelines to ensure their success, and these are also discussed.

Coal is a complex heterogeneous commodity that can be mined in a number of ways and needs to be processed to a homogeneous quality that satisfies the customer?s requirements, while attempting to maximize revenues. Only a small proportion of coal is suitable for metallurgical use. Export coals cover a wide range of qualities and some coals can be used optimally in the raw state for energy production. Critical quality parameters vary and can be a combination of heat value, ash, volatiles, sulphur, phosphorus, sizing, amongst others. The level of beneficiation is generally dictated by the washability of the coal, mining contamination, and the target product quality. The steps in the coal chain covered in this paper comprise exploration, mining selections, production, the washing process, and product delivery. Many points of sampling are needed to maximize yield at the correct quality, and some of these will be described in the paper. Keywords coal chain, coal beneficiation, sampling.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

This paper summarizes the works that the Research “Group of Ground Engineering”, belonging to the Mining Department of the University of Oviedo, Spain, has been developing in close cooperation with the Regional Mining Department, since 2001, in order to control and monitor an experimental underground limestone exploitation by the room and pillars method. The aim of the current research is not only the geotechnical characterization of the rock mass (by means of laboratory and site tests) or the instrumentation of its displacements and stress changes (using convergence meters, INCREX probe, extensometers and rigid inclusion cells), but, moreover, to undertake intensive monitoring and control of such pilot mine, which is mined exclusively in order to accomplish this research. The data transmission was made on line via Internet, to achieve a full understanding of the behaviour of the experimental mine, to access data from remote locations and to visualize results from a website. All the collected information becomes input data for several numerical models using finite differences under a program developed in the research Group, ALMEC. The simulation and a final economical analysis lead to a design of an underground exploitation, at production scale, for a resource that is traditionally mined by means of open-pit process methods that could be worked underground with less environmental impact. The main purpose achieved by this exhaustive analysis is the technical and economic viability of such mine, for their optimisation for a future productive exploitation.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidised-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Based on its condition, Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled due to the combined effects of too-high operating temperatures and corrosion caused by the following two main factors: ? Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut which resulted in and increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue; ? SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated through the brick lining, passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but upon dismantling more damage was found and the roaster was rebuilt from the tuyeres upwards. During the rebuild, the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

Having agreed to perform this task, I naturally started to wonder what on earth I was going to talk about, and on reviewing the literature I was surprised at how little I knew and how much I?d forgotten about the origins of this industry. For example: ?I?d forgotten that the Chinese invented black powder at least 1 000 years ago, back in the 10th century (although some say this invention occurred 2 000years ago). ?I didn?t know that Roger Bacon was the first person in the Western World to give exact directions for the making of gunpowder in 1242 and to understand its potential. Pepper?s Playbook of Metals quotes:?...above all, he is named as the discoverer of gun-powder, a material which has brought more wonderful changes in the great family of man than the most potent elixir that could have been devised to prolong life?.

Anglogold Ashanti?s Kopanang Gold Plant (previously No. 9 Gold Plant) treats ore from Kopanang and Tau Lekoa shafts. The plant is twin streamed and has dedicated treatment circuits, from milling to final product, for each shaft. Waste rock material is used to compensate for the mill gap on both streams. Each stream consists of three 4.85 m x9.15 m ROM mills in closed circuit with a single stage hydrocyclone, milling an average of 7 000 t per day. The liner configuration in each mill consists of six rows of 30 grid liners along with rectangular lifter bars. The topic of gold lock-up is not new and has been investigated and reported on many times, both within Anglogold Ashanti and the broader mining industry. Although the lock-up mechanism is understood, its measurement is neither practical nor precise. The initial lock-up in a new liner and the release as the liner wears down cannot be accurately quantified. Previous test work carried out on Kopanang Gold Plant (with a ?gold scanner?) measured the natural gamma radiation emitted by uranium. This radiation is in proportion to the mass of concentrate locked up in the grid liner pockets, as well as between the cast-on backing plate and the shell. The ratio of concentrate lock-up was estimated as 35% behind the liners and65% in the pockets. Mill gravity concentrates are recovered during routine relining operations from behind the grid liners at Kopanang Gold Plant. Prior to relining, the liners tend to release the concentrate from the pockets as the liners wear. Historical Kopanang data from actual ?mill gold? smelted indicates that an average of 29 kg gold is recovered from behind each row. This indicates a total lock-up of 250kg gold per mill. This locked-up gold should preferably be minimizedor eliminated for the following reasons: ?The cyclic build-up and release of gold in mills complicates accounting ?Gold concentrate arising from liners is a security risk and creates a major mechanism for gold theft ?Loss of interest on the value of 250 kg fine gold is significant and was a major driver for the project. These factors led to the need to develop techniques to eliminate or at least minimize the gold lock-up in the mills. Wave liners, with rubber inserts, have been successful in eliminating lock-up, and were tested at Kopanang Gold Plant in November 2000. However, due to increased load-slip and high wear rates associated with these liners, this option proved less economical in terms of liner wear. Grid liners, with rubber-filled pockets, demonstrated a very high wear life and eliminated pocket lock-up. This system was successfully trialed in January 2003, but unfortunately did not prevent lock-up behind the liners. Current developments have resulted in a system that eliminates both pocket and backing plate lock-up. The conventional grid liner design has been modified to remove its steel backing plate. Rubber inserts that are integrated onto a rubber backing plate, have been designed to be used with the newly modified grid. The backing plate and grid pockets are now completely occupied by rubber, thus completely eliminating concentrate build-up around the new grid liner system installed in November 2003. Results to date are promising and liner life is expected to exceed conventional performance.

Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (RPZC) identified implementing a Mineral Resource Management (MRM) programme at the mine as a strategic incentive. The purpose of the programme is to optimize the economic value of the RPZC mineral resource, over the total value chain of the mine, taking expected macro economic conditions into consideration as well. With Mineral Resource Management still being a relatively young drive in the mining industry, information on the concept is relatively scarce. RPZC had several successes and problems with implementing such a concept and also still has a way to go before a complete Minerals Resource Management approach is implemented at the mine and entrenched as a working culture. The purpose of this paper is to: ?define a systems approach to implementing a Mineral Resource Management programme at a base metal mine ?indicate the specific MRM approaches taken at RPZC ?indicate the expected advantages of implementing a MRM approach ?measure the actions already taken against the systematic MRM approach, and indicate the advantages already captured ?indicate the way forward taking lessons learned into consideration ?indicate proposals to implement the MRM approach in the macro mining environment in South Africa.

Low carbon 11.5% chromium stainless steels are finding increasing use in industry as square or rectangular tubing material for the construction of structures by welding. During processing, resistively welded circular pipes are bent into square or rectangular shapes. During this process longitudinal cracks can sometimes develop atone of the inner corners of the section. An investigation has shown that the processing of round into square tubing with very sharp corners can cause excessive cold working at the inner corners of the squared tube. This, together with the high tensile residual stresses and a susceptible microstructure due to the presence of grain boundary carbides, can result in brittle cleavage cracking. Measures that can be used to reduce the problem are described.

"In self-aerated flotation machines, the gas rate depends on operational variables (e.g. froth depth and impeller speed), pulp properties (e.g. solid content and viscosity), and reagent addition (e.g. type and concentration of frother). The gas rate has a strong correlation with the flotation performance by influencing the gas dispersion properties and froth retention time. A factorial experimental design was used to study how the gas dispersion properties, the froth retention time, and the flotation performance respond to changes in froth depth and impeller speed (as the most common operational variables). An in-depth understanding of the effects of impeller speed and froth depth on the gas dispersion properties, especially the bubble surface area flux and froth retention time, is necessary to improve operating strategies for self-aerated flotation machines. All experiments were carried out in a 50 m3 selfaerated flotation cell in an iron ore processing plant. The results showed that the froth depth affected the metallurgical performance mostly via changing the froth retention time. The impeller speed had two important impacts on the metallurgical performance via varying both the froth retention time and the bubble surface area flux in the froth and pulp zones, respectively. The interaction effects of the froth depth and impeller speed were also established. This allowed us to develop a strategy for operating selfaerated flotation machines based on varying the froth depth and impeller speed with regard to the cell duty. The approximately 2800 Ma old Ventersdorp Contact Reef is a unique Witwatersrand orebody, from which about 6% of the world?s gold production is derived. A major portion of this production is mined at depths exceeding 2500 m and deepest levels of mining are at about 3600 m. The orebody?s hangingwall consists of volcanic rocks. This differs from the older Witwatersrand orebodies, which have quartzitic hangingwalls. The thickness of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef is generally about 1.20 m, but is highly variable, at an average dip of about 18°. A pronounced unconformity beneath this orebody is also expressed by varying footwall rock type characteristics and frequent rolling of the reef plane. These rolls follow topographic variations of the palaeo-surface. More geological than rock mechanics studies were performed on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef prior to 1992. Recently, however, a multidisciplinary team comprising various rock engineering and geological disciplines has delineated geotechnical areas by a novel technique. Geotechnical areas are defined by distinct footwall/hangingwall rock assemblages. The presence of three footwall and two hangingwall rock types results in the definition of six geotechnical areas across a distance exceeding 60 km, including about 10 gold mines. Distinct rock mass behaviour has been documented in three of the six geotechnically defined areas. Different rock mass behaviour is expressed by features such as mining-induced fracturing, closure rates, fall of ground characteristics and seismic character. Some geological features override the rock mass behaviour as defined for the individual geotechnical areas. These are undulations of the orebody or the frequency, characteristics and attitude of major discontinuities. It is concluded that the concept of geotechnically subdividing orebodies is not only important for facies delineation and the associated grade, but also needs to be considered for safety aspects, in determining factors such as the appropriate support to be employed.

Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. The first documentary evidence for the use of fire to extract a metal was furnished by the wall paintings of the ancient Egyptians showing workers using the blowpipe and bellows to increase the temperature to melt gold in a crucible. Furnaces grew in size and complexity, coke replaced charcoal in the blast furnace, and the Industrial Revolution took place in England that gradually spread worldwide. More metals became known and new techniques were introduced for their extraction. Among these, metallothermic reactions became prominent in the nineteenth century immediately after the discovery of the electric current and its use to liberate the alkali metals from their salts. Once these metals became available, they were used to produce aluminium from alumina that resisted all other methods of attack. Aluminium, now available on a large scale, was used to decompose the most stable compounds and liberate more metals that became the basis of modern civilization.

A number of challenges face platinum concentrator plant operators. These challenges include the increase in operating costs, the increase in smelter cost for the processing of concentrate, the shortage and cost of power, and the tightening of specifications on concentrate quality by the toll-smelting operations. Over the years the focus has moved from extracting the platinum group metals (PGM) from the Merensky Reef to the UG2 reef. This has a number of advantages, including the higher ?basket price? for UG2 concentrate, reduced mining cost per unit volume as a result of the higher density of UG2, and the reduction in overall concentrate tonnage to be smelted. In many cases the Merensky ore has been fully exploited and it makes sense for the focus to shift to the UG2 ore that can be accessed through the Merensky shaft infrastructure. The presence of relatively high levels of chromite in UG2 concentrate is, however, a major disadvantage due to the problems associated with smelting such a concentrate in conventional submerged arc furnaces. In addition to increasing the specification on the minimum PGM grade of concentrates, smelters have had to impose strict specifications on the levels of chromite in the concentrate. The threat of high penalties has forced concentrators to change their modus operandi, often resulting in a significant loss in recovery. The final concentrate grades and PGM recoveries are shown to vary significantly throughout the industry. The reasons for this include varying ore mineralogy and different operating philosophies. This would therefore imply that the opportunity exists to optimize the operations by considering fundamental aspects such as the PGM mineralogy and the application of appropriate technologies. By returning to the fundamentals of flotation and applying the findings of detailed process reviews, it has been possible to increase the concentrate PGM grade, reduce the concentrate chromite grade, and in some cases increase the recovery of PGM to concentrate. This paper presents case studies where this approach has been used to successfully optimize concentrator performance, resulting in lower operating cost and higher PGM production. To understand the effect of thermal loading from HLW on the groundwater flow nearby, the coupling of TH in an equivalent porous medium is studied. Results indicate that under given conditions the alteration of groundwater flow by decay heat is localized phenomena. More comprehensive studies are underway for THM coupling. Zum Verstandnis fur die Wirkung der thermischen Belastung von HLW in der Nahe von Grundwasserstrom, ist die Verbindung von TH in den entsprechenden porigen Medium erarbeitet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass unter vorgegebenen Bedingungen die Anderung von Grundwasserstrom durch Zerfallwarme lokalisiert wird. Zusatzliche umfassende Arbeiten sind fur die THM Kupplung auf dem Wege. Pour comprendre l'effet du chargement thermique de HLW sur l'écoulement d'eaux souterraines tout près, l'accouplement du TH dans un milieu poreux équivalent est étudié. Les résultats indiquent que dans des conditions données le changement d'écoulement d'eaux souterraines par la chaleur d'affaiblissement est des phénomènes localisés. Des études plus complètes sont en cours pour l'accouplement de THM.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

Mapping of exposed rock walls provides data on geological features such as joints, bedding planes, faults etc critical to the economics and the safety of mine operations. Traditional, manual methods of mapping can be time consuming, error prone and limited in their coverage. New methods have been developed to map exposed faces remotely and safely however the benefits of these methods are only fully realised when exposed structures can be quickly and easily mapped using automated methods. This paper describes the application of an automated method of analysis of 3D images that provides users with the capacity to map exposed structures automatically. The method is based on the use of vector classification methods used in some neural network systems and provides rapid and reliable identification of exposed planes. CSIRO Exploration and Mining is applying these methods to 3D images for a range of applications from pit mapping to machine automation.
