Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining Industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of ?Google maps?? underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum?s new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

Eng.), Ph.D. (Cape) (Fellow) The theoretical and experimental results of a study of centrifugalmills are reviewed. Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

This paper reviews the history, sources, mineralogy, extraction metallurgy, conversion, and enrichment of uranium in South Africa. Over the past 40 years extraction plants were built at 27 sites, an9.over 140 kt of uranium have been produced. Older plants have had to adapt to changing market conditions, no single technology has had the opportunity to become entrenched, and costs have been reduced to a third of those of the original flowsheet. The research efforts aimed at developing the country s nuclear raw materials have been particularly rewarding, as they have enabled South Africa to become a world leader in the extraction of uranium from low-grade ores and to develop methods for uranium enrichment and the production of nuclear fuels.

A study of the arrangements for pulp discharge on pebble mills, and their influence on mill performance by A. H. MOKKEN, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow), G. K. I. BLENDULF, M.Sc. (London) (Member) Although used for many years in the gold-mining industry, the conventional pan lifter at the discharge end of a pebble mill has hindered attempts at optimization of speed of rotation and pulp flow. A theoretical approach to flow patterns in pan lifters has pointed to limitations in the capacity of these lifters, with capacity decreasing as speed of rotation is increased. Complete elimination of the pan lifter by the adoption of peripheral or end discharge has resulted in a marked increase in pulp flow and an improvement in power utilization. Assays of the gold content of pulp discharged after a mill stoppage from mills fitted with pan lifters show values well in excess of the current milled grade, which indicates an accumulation of gold particles in the mill and, therefore, a longer retention period. The same could apply to other heavy minerals and metals present in the ore feed or worn off mill linings and metallic grinding media. Examples are osmiridium, fine iron and iron alloys, and copper and sulphide minerals. This phenomenon is attributed to the higher specific gravities of these metals and minerals, causing them to migrate towards the mill shell, from which position they are not readily removed by the lifters at the discharge end of the mill. The close association of gold particles with iron and sulphide minerals in the crevices of mill liners might be conducive to the formation of coatings on the gold. Assays of samples of milled pulp taken from a mill designed for end discharge show a lower accumulation of gold. The accumulation and nature of these gold particles are being studied at present. With increasing diameters of pebble (or autogenous) mills, peripheral or end discharge appears to be the preferred method of pulp removal.

The abrasiveness of a mineral or rock is an extremely important topic in the mining industry and is generally measured by the Bond abrasion index (AI). However, to determine such an index by the Bond test requires 1,600 g of sample with particle sizes ranging from ½” to ¾”, which are not available in certain situations, such as ore prospecting, drilling, and geometallurgical studies. In order to investigate the abrasiveness of smaller-sized sample materials, a modified LCPC test was developed, which allows testing fine materials (i.e., 1.0 mm or smaller) to predict wear in ore processing circuits and anticipate possible failures resulting from changes in abrasive characteristics of the ore being processed. The results for 16 different materials indicated a good correlation with the AI and the modified LCPC, resulting in a reliable alternative for the AI. A detailed fundamental study has been made of the various factors that influence the partial reactions comprising the electrochemical model of the cementation of gold from cyanide solutions by zinc. The effects of cyanide concentration, pH, agitation, additions of lead, and the presence of various impurity ions on both the anodic dissolution of zinc and the cathodic reduction of gold have been investigated. The results are used to explain the influence of these variables on the rate of cementation, and possible implications of this work for plant practice are discussed.

The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. The Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand is organising, on behalf of the Government of Thailand and the International Tin Council, the Second Technical Conference on Tin. The Conference will be held at Sala Santitham, Bangkok from 18th to 22nd November, 1969. Papers will be grouped under three main headings: (i) Geology and prospecting; (ii) Mining and ore dressing; (iii) Miscellaneous, e.g. stimulating production, metallurgy, estimation of reserves etc. Pre-prints of papers will be circulated. There are factors distinct from the mode of mechanical extraction that may have considerable influence on its prospects for extensive adoption; the rockburst factor is one of these. REPLY BY H.H. HAASE AND R.G.B PICKERING We agree with Professor O'Connor that, in conventional gold-mining operations, a disproportionate number of seismic events occur in the period immediately following a blast; rockburst activity follows the same pattern, and it has been calculated that, if the rockburst peak were spread evenly across the day, the rockburst exposure of stope workers would nearly double.

In a pulp environment, the surface properties of magnesite and dolomite tend to be similar, due to the re-adsorption of dissolved calcium species, which makes the flotation separation difficult. In this paper, the chelating reagent EDTA is introduced to eliminate the adverse influence of the calcium species and to restore the selectivity of magnesite-dolomite separation using sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) as a depressant. Flotation experiments confirm that the recovery of magnesite improves significantly in the presence of EDTA. Zeta potential experiments confirm that the negatively charged EDTA4+ and HEDTA3+ species can form soluble and stable chelates with positively charged Ca2+ and Ca(OH)+ species preventing their adsorption on the magnesite surface. Adsorption measurements prove the addition of EDTA can decrease the adsorption of depressant SHMP on the magnesite surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements further confirm the transformation from the surface of magnesite to dolomite in the presence of calcium ions, and the possible adsorption mechanism of EDTA and SHMP on the magnesite and dolomite surface. The size of the particle plays an important role in the flotation of minerals. Comminution allows the release of valuable species and their subsequent recovery. Then, the degree of concentration and recovery will depend on the size of the particle. In this work, we investigated the flotation of coarse particles (-850 +150 μm) of copper ores when using the fluidized-bed separator (HydroFloat® cell) and compared it with the process of conventional flotation with medium size particle (-150 μm) (Metso cell) using seawater. Quadrilátero Ferrífero is an important mineral province located in Minas Gerais state, responsible for a substantial amount of iron production in Brazil. Among the concentration methods for iron ore practised by the mining companies in this region, the most important is the reverse cationic flotation. Dolomite iron formations, with the presence of hematite, quartz and dolomite, occur in several areas of mining and, with the deepening of the deposits, this type of ore, with low iron content and more complex mineralogy occurs frequently. Carbonaceous minerals, mainly dolomite, present a technological challenge for the concentration of iron ore by flotation. In the present study, the concentration of iron ore with 6% of dolomite content was evaluated. Bench flotation trials indicated that conventional iron ore flotation is not selective to float dolomite, thus compromising the iron content in the final concentrate. Alternative flotation routes were evaluated, and a selective condition was reached to float both quartz and dolomite using the combination of the cationic collector Flotigam 16424 with an anionic collector Flotinor 16551. It was demonstrated that the flotation of dolomite was improved with the combined use of both collectors in the cleaner stage, and by a previous quartz flotation in the rougher stage. Zeta potential analysis indicated specific adsorption as the adsorption mechanism between Flotinor 16551 and dolomite, confirming the high selectivity observed in the bench flotation tests. Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. Information on rock stress is important for safe mining in seismically active ground. On a major gold mine, a few tens of crews are continuously conducting geological drilling with small pneumatic machines. However, stress measurements are not often carried out in South African deep-level gold mines. One of the reasons is the drilling diameter that overcoring requires, which is much larger than the diameters used in regular geological drilling, e.g. Boart Longyear Metre Eater, which drills AQ or BQ holes. Larger diameter holes result in slower drilling advance, more load in transportation and handling at sites, and higher cost. In order to enable overcoring in BX size (60 mm diameter), we modified the compact conical-ended borehole overcoring (CCBO) technique that has been suggested by International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and was originally designed for NX drilling (76 mm diameter). With a single overcoring, the 3-D stress tensor can be determined. We tested this modified method at a depth of about 3 km at Moab Khotsong mine in South Africa. We worked with drilling crew who usually work at geological drilling with the Metre Eater. In January 2011, we tried using regular geological drilling tools (a sequence of a normal BX bit, reamer, and rod) without success. In August and September 2011, introducing stabilizers and thin BX bits, we succeeded. We could complete a cycle of procedures necessary for an overcoring, including shaping the borehole-end conically, glueing a 16-element strain cell, and overcoring, within 2.5 hours. Only 10 cm overcoring is needed, which increases the chance of successful overcoring in heavily fractured conditions. This modified method is suitable for up-dip holes to depths of 10-15 m from tunnels, and has the potential to be widely used at the initial stage of geological exploration drilling at many localities.

Any company operating a fleet of trucks will be greatly advantaged if the associated fuel costs can be decreased. The optimal tonnage that trucks should be hauling to ensure minimum consumption of diesel fuel has been investigated. The fuel consumption in litres per ton for a fleet of trucks hauling different tonnages of iron ore was recorded in a time-motion study and the optimal tonnage was determined. The following points emerged as a result of the research: > The diesel fuel consumption in litres per ton decreased with increasing tonnage, which means that in order to improve fuel efficiency, the trucks should carry 21 t > As a result of queuing, Africa Truck Hire (one of the two equipment contractors) loses R282.57 per day to diesel that the trucks burn when they are left idling. It is thus advisable that the company adopt a policy of requiring the drivers to switch their engines off while queuing at the stockpile > Filling up the trucks during each shift or rationing the quantity of diesel to 200 litres each shift has a negligible impact on the trucks' fuel efficiency > For the company to spend 35% of their revenue on fuel, the diesel price would have to be between R8.14 and R8.78 per litre.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country's large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."
