"The variability of copper mineralization at Kansanshi mine significantly affects the efficiencies of the processes used to recover copper. Quantifying this variability is therefore essential for monitoring and optimizing the performance of the concentrator, which comprises three different flotation circuits (sulphide, mixed, and oxide) and an atmospheric leach circuit. Onsite automated scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (Auto-SEM-EDS) is used to analyse routine weekly composite samples for each circuit, providing detailed analyses of bulk mineralogy, copper deportment to different minerals, mineral liberation, and associations. Weekly mineralogical trends are used to assess changes in process performance, and characterization of the copper losses has inspired a number of projects to target the specific particle types responsible for the main losses. In this paper we describe the relationship between mineralogy and plant performance at Kansanshi, and discus IntroductionKansanshi is a copper and gold mine located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia, with an annual production in the region of 250 000 t of copper and 160 000 ounces of gold. Ore mined from the epigenetic vein-hosted deposit is classified into three ore types based on the extent of oxidation and supergene enrichment. Sulphide, oxide, and mixed ore are fed to separate mineral processing circuits tailored for recovery of the dominant copper minerals in each. After comminution to a target grind size of 80% passing 150 µm, each ore type is subjected to flotation to recover the copper sulphide minerals (chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, covellite). The oxide float tails and a large proportion of the mixed float tails are then treated by atmospheric leaching to extract copper from the remaining copper-hosting minerals, which include cuprite, malachite, chrysocolla, and delafossite. Some native copper is recovered by flotation and some of it is recovered by leaching. A small portion of the combined concentrate from all circuits is subjected to high-pressure leaching and the rest is sent to the smelter. Sulphuric acid produced during smelting is used for the atmospheric leach."

The Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers (FSPE) recently conducted a survey of professional engineering manpower in South Africa. This article presents the data relevant to mining and metallurgical engineering. FSPE in their survey attempted to determine the supply of engineers in South Africa both from local universities and by immigration. The immigrants gave some problems in that it is difficult to know whether a man who claims to be professionally qualified really is. However, it was estimated that the ratio of immigrants who claimed to be qualified to those who really are the equivalent of our local graduates was between 1,0 and 1,9 for mining engineers, and between 2,0 and 4,1 for metallurgical engineers.

The Electrometallurgy and Electrochemistry Workshop organized by Dr Ian Corans was held at two venues: .Perth on 9th May, 1990, attended by 30 people . Kalgoorlie on 11th May, 1990, attended by 28 people. The workshop had four speakers: Dr Roger Paul, Director of the Process Chemistry Division at Mintek, who introduced the course with the theory of basic electrochemistry and electrowinning; Dr Peter Spencer of Bactech, who spoke on direct slurry electrolysis; Professor lan Ritchie of Murdoch University, who spoke on Zinc cementation; and Mr. Mike Costelo of Minproc, who gave an address on practical aspects of gold electrowinning in Australia. Dr Paul spoke throughout the first session and shared the remaining sessions with the other speakers.

The estimation of some properties of South African coals from proximate analyses by J. W. de KOCK, Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Chem. Eng.) Cantab. (Fellow) and J-P. FRANZIDIS, B.Sc. (Chem. Eng.) (Visitor) Correlations have been obtained whereby calorific values, ultimate analyses, and Hardgrove Indices can be estimated from proximate analyses of South African coals. This has been done by the application of stepwise multiple linear-regression analyses of a mass of data published by the Fuel Research Institute.

A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

In a former Spotlight articlet, Dr P. J. D. Lloyd focused attention on the shortage of locally trained mining and metallurgical graduates, and indicated that the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has been exerting pressure to boost the intake of undergraduates in mineral disciplines. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations continue to grow across sub-Saharan Africa and serve as a source of livelihood to many rural communities. Owing to safety, health, environmental, and social concerns, the occupation has been regarded as a menace in several sub-Sahara African countries. Recent studies in the field of ASM prescribe formalization as a way to tame its excesses while enhancing its potential. This paper explores the concept of formalization as it relates to ASM and how it is being affected by the funding situation. The paper seeks to address the question as to whether formalization of artisanal mining operations can achieve the desired results in view of the lingering credit constraints in this mining subsector. It is recommended that, as a way of extending the scope of formalization, focus should be placed not only on access to credit in ASM but also towards optimizing the creditworthiness of ASM firms, with the goal of improving the viability of the operations.

"Advanced planning and automation are increasingly important in modern mines. Sophisticated methods for long-term mine planning are often used, and the advent of autonomous machines makes the actual operation more predictable. However, the interface between these two timescales, i.e. the scheduling of the mobile production fleet, often limits the ability to operate mines at maximum profitability. We show how scheduling the production fleet in an underground mine can be modelled as a flow shop. A flow shop is a general abstract process formulation that captures the key properties of a scheduling problem without going into specific details. Thus, the flow shop enables mine scheduling to reap the benefits of scheduling research from other industries. We review recent results from the mining community and the flow shop community, and introduce scheduling methods used in these two fields. This work aims at providing value to researchers from the mining community who want to leverage their skill set, as well as to theoretical researchers by presenting the mining process as a potential application area. Lastly, we discuss the results, and outline some future challenges and opportunities facing the industry. IntroductionThe margins in underground mining are constantly under pressure since costs increase as the mine becomes deeper. One major component influencing the operational performance, and thus the profitability of an underground mine, is how the mobile machinery and staff are coordinated. Today, the coordination of the underground fleet, i.e. scheduling of the machines, is mostly done manually, with methods that are stretched to their limit and with no guarantees on performance. According to a survey of more than 200 high-level executives in mining companies around the world (Mincom, 2011), the top challenge for modern mines is to maximize production effectiveness, rather than improving the reliability of individual items of equipment. This highlights the importance of coordination on a system level.The effectiveness of mine production can be increased by introducing supportive algorithms in the scheduling process. These algorithms enable mines to construct optimized schedules with respect to custom metrics. Additionally, manual scheduling is a tedious and error-prone task where the performance is heavily dependent on the scheduler. To reduce the staff dependency, supportive algorithms can help to achieve more uniform outcomes, resulting in a more predictable process. In turn, this increases the transparency of the mining process through the entire production chain. It is worth noting that automatic scheduling has proved beneficial in many other industries, such as chemicals and metals (Floudas and Lin, 2004; Tang et al., 2001)."

(Visitor) T his paper highlights the changes that are taking place at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited in mining methods, mechanization, and employment practices. De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

Eng.(Fellow) Design and technical features of a large, deep shaft are described, and details of the sinking equipment are given. Special features in shaft steelwork, materials handling, and station layouts are described and illustrated. The details of the precast brattice wall are given, together with the reasons for the separation of all steelwork from the brattice wall. A newly developed device for the location of the shaft conveyances while loading or unloading at underground stations is briefly described and illustrated. The paper concludes with a summary showing the rates of progress and costs for the shaft-sinking operation.

The control of dust from mine dumps by G. H. GRANGE Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Rand) (Fellow) This paper gives a resume of the early attempts to control dust from mine dumps, leading up to the research project undertaken by the Chamber of Mines ResearchLaboratories to explore the possibilities of establishing vegetation on dump surfaces. The ultimate success of this work and details of the principles involved are outlined. Also given are a brief history of the event that culminated in the introduction of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Act in 1965, details of the control of dust in terms of this Act, and a short summary of the dust-control work.

This paper describes pilot-plant tests on the recovery of apatite from a hitherto untapped material. This materialhydro- separator overflow-is very fine (80 per cent smaller than 45 µm and 32 per cent smaller than 10 µm). . The pilot-plant tests proved that the recovery of apatite from this material is economically and technically viable. This was confirmed by plant trials, which, in the early stages, produced concentrate assaying 36,6 per cent P2O5 at a recovery of 65,5 per cent.

Measurements of the rates of penetration at various throttle air pressures are presented as a function of thrust for three different rockdrills when drilling quartzites with strengths of 45 000 lb/in2 and 39 000 lb/in2, The rate of penetration at optimum thrust is shown to agree well with the predictions of theory and curves of air consumption as a function of throttle air pressure are presented. Man-held machines are shown to be under-thrusted at throttle air pressures above 40 lb/in2g. Measurements of bit wear as a function of distance drilled are presented graphically and discussed in terms of the theory developed in Part 1.

On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

In pyrometallurgical processes, metal oxides are reduced from molten slag through carbothermic reduction. It is of interest to evaluate the reactivity of the carbonaceous materials towards substances such as slag. Characterization techniques such as coal petrography can provide insight into the influence of feed coal properties and how they potentially dictate reductant performance. This study aimed to compare the petrographically determined organic composition of coal to reductant reactivity. Two South African medium-rank C bituminous coals and one anthracite sample were investigated together with high-carbon ferromanganese industrial slag. The reductant reactivity tests were conducted at 1500°C in a muffle furnace to assess the potential of carbonaceous reductant in reacting with the main slag components. SEM-EDS was applied to understand the extent of MnO (and to a lesser extent, SiO2) reduction from the slag. Coal 2, consisting of a greater proportion of vitrinite (59.5 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis and 54.7 vol% including mineral matter) was the most reactive reductant. The anthracite sample, with the highest inert maceral proportions (71.8 vol% including mineral matter and 76.8 vol% on a mineral matter-free basis), was the least reactive reductant.
