Potential errors in XRF analysis are discussed and investigated with specific reference to the analysis of ilmenite samples. A selection of ilmenite samples was chosen and prepared using two XRF preparation techniques: pressed powder pellet and unroasted fusion bead. The merits of the two methods have been discussed in this paper for ilmenite analysis by XRF. Recommendations have been made regarding the use of pressed powder pellets especially with regard to the mineralogical effects that were evidenced during this investigation. The fusion bead technique was found to be far more accurate and able to meet short turnaround requirements provided the calibration methodology used is specific to the grade of samples analyzed.

Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, 'Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process' was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, 'Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy', was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on 'The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore'. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, 'The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings', presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.

A new approach to the -study of human factors in stope productivity by A. C. LAWRENCE B. Econ., D. Com. (S.A.) (Member) The extent of the improvement in mean performance which could be achieved by reducing the variance between stoping gangs is examined, and it is shown that a worthwhile gain would result if variance were reduced by as little as 5 to 15 per cent. The problem of identifying human factors which contributed towards variance in gang performance was examined in one gold mine. A total of 342 'observations' on 49 stoping gangs were gathered, each observation consisting of a set of figures for 36 variables for one gang for one week. The variables included 'stope factors' such as face length, 'gang factors' such as the ethnic composition of the gang, and 'supervisory factors' such as the experience of the miner. These variables were related to 'tons trammed per week' as a measure of work performance. The findings showed that certain of the predictor variables accounted for 66 per cent of the variance in gang performance and about two thirds of this could be attributed to gang and supervisory factors, that is to the 'human factors'. The method suggests a basis for a new approach to the identification of human factors and is a promising step towards optimizing gang performance.

Introduction The introduction of teleremote systems to underground mining can provide a significant improvement in the performance of a mine when compared with conventional mining techniques. This paper presents the concepts of teleremote mining in a case study showing how the systems work and the competitive advantage autonomation of mining techniques will provide for underground metal mining operations into the future. This paper is divided into two sections: the Mining Automation Program and What is next? On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock Oy, DYNO Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of teleremote mining equipment called the ‘Mining Automation Program’ or MAP. This program included a five-year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to create mining equipment and systems for autonomating mining. The projects are based on the communication system currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main components of the program investigated the development of a positioning and navigation module, autonomated systems using teleremote techniques for development and stoping, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. The program included the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 Orebody near Copper Cliff North Mine. This facility was unique allowing collaboration of companies and research organizations inthe design and testing of techniques and equipment used to apply autonomation to mining. Since the inception of the project other research alliances have been added to enhance the program. These include the application of ground support (Meyco/ Master Builders), muck pile recognition, the broadening of telecommunications links (PRECARN Associates Inc.-MALTA project) and the collection and processing of drilling core through the automated diamond drilling project (J.K.S. Boyles). MAP began as an idea a number of years ago with the fundamental question ‘Can an ore-body be profitably mined through autonomation?’ The concept was to design mining equipment and systems that would allow the teleremote operation of a mine. Automation was only one componentof this much larger teleremote mining issue. To start with, it was essential to prove or disprove the feasibility of this concept. The fundamental requirements are: • Telecommunications • Positioning • Navigation • Equipment • Software • Electronics • Mining Engineering • Organization. Each of these had to be considered. Technically, the feasibility of the project hinged on the successful development of a high capacity communication network, an accurate underground positioning system, a navigation system and finally the electronics and software that could integrate these. Mining equipment that could perform all the mining functions was the next requirement, along with explosive supplies that could be delivered to the holes teleremotely. Whatever the systems developed, they must be able to work in both bulk and selective mining situations and in varying conditions within a mine. Finally, the organizational issues of a change from our current method of operation to teleremote mining had to be understood. After five years of research and development the answer to the question ‘Can an orebody be profitably mined using autonomation techniques?’ is YES! There are still hurdles to overcome, however, the basic premise has been proven. The development and production of underground tunnels and stopes has been done. There have been interesting outcomes in terms of reduced effort to accomplish mining and the total time to mine. Definitions •Automationis the process by which a machine or system is run continuously including the ability for the system to self-correct. •Autonomationis the same as automation except that the process does not self-correct. •Teleremote operation is the operation of mining equipment over a network from any location out of line-of-sight of the machine. •Equipment Automationis the addition of technology to a machine that allows for unmanned operation of a machine and thus enhances the productivity of the operator. For example, a guidance system that allows a load-haul-dump to drive by itself, thus freeing the operator for other tasks. •Teleremote mining describes a mine process that combines the use of teleremote operation (potentially with some automation), positioning and process engineering, monitoring and control. •Tamrock DataSoloTMis a computerized drilling rig as shown in Figure 1. •Tamrock DataMini™ is a computerized development drill rig used for drifting and construction tunneling as shown in Figure 2.•Tamrock Toro 450™ is a LHD (Figure 3).

Mining companies are required by law to improve representation of women on their boards. However, progress in this regard has been slow. Boards of directors play an important role in formulating corporate strategy, risk assessment, and effective governance for sustained financial performance. Although some women have successfully maintained board seats, others have been unable to do so. It is difficult to ascertain whether women are being appointed as tokens to satisfy social pressures, as little is known about the experiences of women board members in mining, which may inform or refute tokenism. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women and 16 men across six listed mining companies. Thematic data analysis revealed evidence of tokenism where recruitment to mining boards is compliance-based and is informally driven by influential directors. Adverse boardroom experiences that further confirmed tokenism were reported by women, such as disregarding their contributions, condescending behaviour, and limited influence in decision-making, while other women sought to validate their competence and oppose social exclusion. This study recommends that a strong Board Chair and nominations committee is critical to ensure sustainable recruitment of competent and suitably qualified women; and further foster a culture of inclusivity and valuing gender-diverse boards.

The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. Buying centres are the first point of contact that determines whether ore will be considered as having sufficient provenance to be considered ethically sourced. The information that needs to be captured on the blockchain platform ranges from reports on in-loco inspections and audits of mining and purchase sites. This will guide passive and active monitoring of mining activities, trade-offs for identification systems, including biometrics for the registration of artisanal sellers, scrutiny on the selection of security measures and companies for buyer centres and stockpiling warehouses, evaluation of active and passive infrastructure security, and remote monitoring applications. Assistance with selection and training in geochemical testing instruments to determine the grade of ore material or concentrates and sorting, on-the-ground investigations, guidance on monitoring methods from stockpile and packing area along the transport route to the final destination are required.

Open pit slope stability analyses for large scale instabilities are often carried out using limit equilibrium, finite element or finite difference computer programs. All of these require empirical estimates of rock mass shear strength when calibrated values are not available, which is a common occurrence. A common method of estimating rock mass shear strength is the Hoek-Brown failure criterion, which often over- or underestimates rock mass shear strength when used in limit equilibrium or elastic linearly plastic slope stability analyses, resulting in published alternative estimates for the coefficients of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. This paper investigates the differences between limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic slope stability analysis based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The investigation consisted of a comparison of 3840 RS2 finite element analysis models completed with strain softening, and 216 Slide2 limit equilibrium models. The models were used to evaluate a methodology to determine equivalent limit equilibrium and elastic linearly plastic shear strength parameters that provide the same stable slope angles and instability back break distances as the more representative strain softening stress analysis methods. This paper presents the methodology and compiles the results into design charts and equations for equivalent limit equilibrium Mohr-Coulomb shear strength parameters, that simplify calibration against actual case studies. The results compare well with older empirical shear strength estimates, however, a detailed calibration of the results against case studies will need to be carried out. The analysis also did not consider pore pressure effects; this is left for future publication.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

At present, over 85% of the world’s rare earth oxides are produced from the bastnäsite ores, found mainly in China. Meanwhile, the ion adsorption ores are the most important sources for heavy rare earth production. As the demand for rare earth materials in the world increases, other forms of rare earth deposits will become new potential resources of rare earth production in the future. In this paper, flotation performance of a steenstrupine ore from the Kvanefjeld deposit for rare earth recovery was studied through laboratory bench testwork. The effects of various factors including grinding size and collector dosage on recovery and selectivity of the selected rare earth elements, La, Ce and Y, were investigated. A rare earth concentrate with the grades of La 2.8 wt%, Ce 5.1 wt% and Y 1.0 wt% at recoveries of 80.5% La, 79.8% Ce and 55.3% Y was obtained in optimum conditions. The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. Professor G.T. van Rooyen has guided the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria in South Africa for the past 32 years. During this period, 54 masters' degrees have been awarded in the Department, and 17 doctorandi promoted. He has also made a major contribution to industry by his incisive analysis, relevant and practical synthesis, and his exceptional talent in innovative design. He is still active in fracture analysis, thermal fatigue, weld simulation transformation kinetics, and fracture mechanics, and continues to contribute to a better understanding of metallurgical problems encountered in practice. He has advised many companies, and has received many honours and recognitions.

Platinum production in Southern Africa amounted to 80% of world production in 2005with a small increase from 5 117 000 ounces to 5 275 000 ounces. For the seventh consecutive year the platinum market is on course to record a moderate deficit in supply. This is reflected in the price increase from a trading range US$860 to US$880 in June 2005 to an excess of US$1 200 in September 2006. Southern Africa, with its extensive platinum reserves, will continue to be the dominant platinum producer and has a number of new mines in an advanced stage of planning. The slogan ?Platinum Surges Ahead? was selected to describe the exciting and vibrantnature of all aspects of platinum mining, beneficiation and marketing. This conference will cover these aspects from exploration and orebody delineation, through mine design, development and operation to mine closure; mineral beneficiation, marketing and compliance with the Mining Charter will also be subjects for discussion and debate. It is also anticipated that the issue of overall increases in productivity, through the introduction of technology, will demonstrate Southern Africa?s status as a premier mining district. It is my pleasure to welcome delegates from abroad and locally, on behalf of the SAIMM, to the Second International Platinum Conference ?Platinum Surges Ahead?. I trust that you will find the proceedings informative and value adding and will participate in the discussions and debate in order to obtain maximum benefit from the conference. I am sure that the post-conference tours will be interesting and of great benefit to participants.
