"The authors were tasked with introducing safe and efficient drilling and blasting practices to a small artisanal mine located in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. The current mining methods employed at the mine are inefficient as rockbreaking is conducted utilizing hammer and chisel, or by drilling and blasting with no understanding of the rockbreaking process. The paper discusses the drill and blast cycle, as well as the associated activities necessary to support the mining cycle. The challenges and critical aspects in implementing drill and blast activities are discussed, as well as some of the technical aspects, i.e.drilling pattern, initiation and timing of the blast, and handling of misfires. Ancillary issues such as ventilation, training, communication, effective planning, logistics, and human relations are also examined. IntroductionRockbreaking accounts for 60% of the direct mining costs in small-scale mining. When drilling and blasting practices are poorly implemented the process becomes inefficient and dangerous. The introduction of a proven drill and blast system to artisanal mining offers a number of challenges, with safety being considered the backbone of any sustainable operation and a standard that cannot be compromised.The paper is based on a project at an artisanal cassiterite (tin) mining operation in a small village in the Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. A drill and blast programme utilizing industry best practice was introduced at an underground development end; a raise developed at an inclination of 23 degrees. The underground working is accessed via a 17 degree incline shaft with an operating length of 105 m and serviced by a single drum winder. The winder operates at a speed of about 3.5 m/min hoisting two 1 t wagons from the bottom of the incline to surface for tipping (Figure 1)."

Platinum-based alloys are being developed for high temperature and special applications for good corrosion and oxidation resistance. The microstructures are similar to those of nickel-based super alloys, and comprise ~Pt3Al particles in a Pt-based matrix. After assessing binary alloys, the best candidate system was found to be Pt-Al. Testing and selection of alloys based on Pt-Al were undertaken, where the ternary additions comprised Ru, Cr, Ta, Ir and Ti. As well as phase characterization work, mechanical and oxidation tests were undertaken. The best alloys were found to be Pt-Al-Cr and Pt-Al-Ru. However, the volume fraction of the ~Pt3Al was only around40 per cent instead of the ~70 per cent found in Ni-based super alloys. To increase this, trials were conducted on a range of Pt-Al-Cr-Ru alloys, the optimum composition being Pt80:Al14:Cr3:Ru3.Currently, further additions are being made to the quaternary alloys to change selected properties. As well as developing the alloys themselves, another part of the project is to compile a thermodynamic database using Thermo-Calc?. Phase diagram work has been undertaken so that the results can be input to Thermo-Calc? so that the descriptions of the phases can be optimized. The final database will allow the phases and compositions of selected alloys to be derived, thus predicting the alloys? components without necessarily undertaking further experimental work. This will aid the development of the alloys and will be a useful tool to the final developers of the alloys. PRESENT Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held on Friday the 20th August, 1971, at 7.45 p.m. in the Boulevard Hotel, Witbank. Mr J. Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting. One of the ways of trauma and occupational diseases level reduction is noted to be the improvement of the labour protection measures planning. As an indicator for prospective trends determination in the labour protection planning improvement sphere economic risk has been proposed to be used. The trauma and occupational diseases analysis based on the correlative and regressive methods has been carried out for the “Vorgashorskaya” mine of Pechora coal basin. Trauma and occupational diseases occurrences frequency and economic losses value have been estimated. Trauma and occupational diseases economic risk distribution analysis has been presented in respect to the different subdivisions and occupational groups of “Vorgashorskaya” mine.

The paper circumscribes the base metal casting industry in Southern Africa. It essentially consists in the founding of copper and zinc alloys. The challenge related to the scarcity and the unaffordable quality patterns and dies faced by the industry is discussed. New manufacturing technologies for foundry tooling called Rapid Prototyping that can possibly be used to alleviate the above mentioned challenge are then presented and their benefits assessed.

Ferroalloys are integral part of steel melting process. The purpose of using ferroalloys is three fold e.g. killing of steel, modifying the slag composition and steel alloying. Amount of ferroalloys used for alloying is subject to requirements of steel properties e.g. yield strength, ductility, formability etc. Variety of ferroalloys (some-times pure metal) is used by steel industries depending upon their techno-economic feasibility. Size, chemistry and modes of addition of ferroalloys are suitably engineered to bring in operational consistency and cost benefits. Of late, Tata Steel has tried out a few ferroalloys for the first time with interesting results to meet the specific requirements of high strength interstitial free (IF) and micro-alloyed steels. Some of these ferroalloys have been put into regular use with complete or partial replacement of ferroalloys used earlier. Size of one of the ferroalloys has also been modified without any other adverse effects. This paper summarizes requirements of ferroalloys for the steel industry with special emphasis on recent trials.

Volumetric flow and mass flow are two of the critical process parameters needed to understand and control flotation processes, with others being levels, densities, and metal analyses. Both volumetric flow and density measurements can be adversely influenced by entrained air, which will result in artificially high flow readings and artificially low mass flow calculations. Array-based instrumentation has been used successfully to accurately measure both volumetric flow of aerated slurry and the quantity of air entrained within the slurry. The latter measurement has been used to correct density measurements, thus providing an accurate mass flow calculation. A case study involving the use of this technology to measure both flow rates and air entrainment levels at Eland Platinum processing facility (concentrator) will be covered in detail. In addition, with certain traditional flow meters such as electromagnetic meters, erroneous volumetric flow rates can be recorded in the presence of paramagnetic or ferromagnetic material. The use of this array technology to avoid spikes in measurements due to steel fragments passing through the pipe will also be discussed.

During the last few years a large number of pillars in different mines were investigated. Pillar conditions were evaluated using subjective, empirical, geophysical and numerical methods. A critical comparison of the different methods showed some interesting coherence. This paper concentrates on experiences using the p-wave velocities as an indicator of pillar conditions. Während den letzten Jahren wurde eine große Anzahl von Bergfesten in verschiedenen Bergwerken auf ihren Zustand hin untersucht. Hierzu wurden subjektive, empirische, geophysikalische sowie numerische Methoden angewandt. Dieser Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit den Erfahrungen beim Einsatz der p-Wellengeschwindigkeit zur Beschreibung des Festenzustandes. Le condition géotechnique d’une grand nombre des piliers des mines souterraines différentes sont examinées ces dernières années. On a appliqué des méthodes subjectives, empiriques, géophysiques et numériques. Ce rapport occupe aux expériences avec l’application de la vélocité des ondes de compression pour tracer le condition des piliers.

Equipment selection in mining operations is an important issue, and also difficult to solve in multiple criteria environments. The paper in question has aimed to develop computer software for solving equipment selection problems in mining. In their paper, Basçetin et al. have analysed two case study problems related to open pit and underground mining method selection. By using Yager?s method1, the authors have selected 18 different criteria in the first case study and 21 criteria in the second case study. However, as emphasized by Ozdemir2, in pair wise comparison matrices the appropriate number of criteria should be seven as the maximum, from the point view of validation, consistency and redundancy. In cases where there are more than seven criteria to be handled, it is suggested that the criteria should be clustered and then the maximum number of clusters and subcriteria of every cluster should be limited to seven4.

A colloquium on 'Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations' was held in, conjunction with the 1984 Electra Mining Exhibition, at the Milpark Holiday Inn in Johannesburg on 19th September, 1984. An attendance of close on 200 delegates was testimony to the popularity of the subject. The delegates included a number of visitors from abroad, including senior members of the management of foreign companies and a member of the Council of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, United Kingdom. Both the local and foreign press was also represented.

ABSTRACT: Geological conditions associated with alpine environments in combination with high overburden in many tunnelling projects lead to squeezing behaviour. The main problems associated with such conditions include large deformations, overstressing of supports, and lack of face stability. In the past during Alpine tunnelling the problem of large displacements incompatible with rockbolt – shotcrete support systems have been solved by leaving gaps in the lining to accommodate excessive deformations. In the late nineties, yielding elements have been developed, which are integrated into the lining. The paper deals with the basic concept, the design and the application of that system, which has been successfully used in several Alpine tunnels. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Die geologischen Verhältnisse in den Alpen führen bei großer Überlagerung häufig zu starken Deformationen während des Baues von Tunneln. Die großen Verformungen führen in vielen Fällen zu einer Überbeanspruchung des Ausbaues und Problemen mit der Ortsbruststabilität. Früher ist man dem Problem der Unverträglichkeit des Ausbaues mit den hohen Dehnungen durch Freilassen von Deformationschlitzen im Spritzbeton begegnet. Vor etwa 10 Jahren wurden duktile Stahlelemente entwickelt, welche in die Spritzbetonschale integriert werden. Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit dem Konzept, der Planung und der Ausführung. RÉSUMÉ: Les conditions géologiques dans les Alpes conduisent fréquemment lors d'un grand recouvrement à des déformations fortes pendant la construction des tunnels. Les grandes déformations conduisent dans beaucoup de cas à une surtension du revêtement et à des problèmes avec la stabilité de front de taille. On a fait face plus tôt au problème de l'incompatibilité du revêtement avec les extensions élevées par libérer des rainures dans le béton projeté. Il y a environ 10 ans, des éléments sidérurgiques ductiles qui sont intégrés dans le béton projeté ont été développés. La contribution s'occupe de concept, de planification et de mise en oeuvre.

Sulfide impurities in iron ore concentrates play an important role in designing pelletising and steel making plants. Therefore attempts are made to keep the sulfur content of the final concentrate produced by the plants as low as possible. Generally, in the beneficiation process of iron ore concentrate, the removal of sulfur is performed through magnetic separation systems, followed by reverse flotation. The sulfide content of the iron ore concentrates originated from two main sources, including pyrite and pyrrhotite. In this research, in order to compare the floating capability of these two types of sulfide minerals, two iron ore concentrates with different sulfide constituents, pyrite or pyrrhotite, were selected. Reverse flotation tests were done separately on these samples under similar conditions. Process parameters considered for the tests included pH (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10), collector consumption (150, 200, 250, 300 and 350 g/t) and frother consumption (40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 g/t). Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) were the collector and frother used in the tests, respectively. For modelling and optimising process parameters, the Central Composite Design (CCD) method was applied to the test results. Empirical coded equations were obtained for responses involving weight recovery, Fe recovery, Fe grade and S grade. Finally, comparison of test results revealed that the elimination recovery of pyrite sulfides was far greater than pyrrhotite sulfides, and it was possible to remove 84% sulfur content of the pyrite sample compared to minus 30% for the pyrrhotite sample. In view of the singleness of traditional methods about international petroleum (Brant) price forecast, ten main factors that affect international petroleum price are fully analysed. Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. Two different methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making have been proposed to solve the problem of mining method selection in the paper titled ?Mining method selection by multiple criteria decision making tool, by Bitarafan and Ataei. This problem is really important and also difficult to solve because of the need of handling many criteria simultaneously in the process of decision making. Bitarafan and Ataei have selected 15 criteria for the case study in their paper and those criteria have not been clustered/grouped yet. The number of selected criteria is only 15, although there are more criteria that should be handled in a real case, because they have used Saaty?s method in the section ?Fuzzy multiple attribute decision making? in their paper. Saaty?s method considers the pair wise comparison of criteria and uses random indexed which have already been derived and published. Available random indexes, however, have been derived for maximum 15 criteria so far.

Project evaluations of mineral deposits are necessary for mineral rights, owners and investors alike. A feasibility study provides a definitive technical, environmental and commercial base and is the key element leading to a decision to invest or not to invest. For example, the study may be used to justify further exploration and development expenditure or to provide a basis for a major underwriting to raise the required capital. There are three distinct phases in the development of a project and the type of study will differ depending on the quality of information available or the level of decision to be made. This paper looks at these three phases in the development of a mineral project and the type of study required; namely, a scoping study, prefeasibility, and a full feasibility study. The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. The paper deals with the importance of design, and of codes of practice, in ensuring safe working conditions in mines. The design principles involved in the design process are dealt with, and the importance of a logical design process is emphasized. The links between the requirements for developing a code of practice, embodied in the existing guidelines for the preparation of such a code, and the design principles and process are considered in some detail. Finally, suggestions are included which may provide improvements to the code and hence, ultimately, lead to further improvement in safe working conditions.

A common problem encountered in the mineral sands industry is that the mineralogical measurements used in defining the resource are not readily converted to metallurgical recoveries, which are used to predict the quantity of the final products. The problem stems from the different objectives of the exploration and metallurgical assessment programmes, and is often compounded by the use of different laboratory techniques and mineral definitions. Common mistakes include the misapplication of routine analysis, incorrect interpretation of mineral recovery, the confusion of mineral recovery with product yield and inconsistent definition of the same mineral. Experience has shown that unless these potential mistakes are identified, the measurement techniques used during exploration and metallurgical assessment are not compatible, often resulting in large errors in the prediction of mineral production. There are no easy solutions to the problem, as there is no universal assay technique which can cost effectively characterize all the mineral sands resources. The recommended course of action will therefore require several iterations to optimize the assay technique to suit the resource. Fundamental to the success of the measurement technique is the understanding of the mineralogy, its behaviour during mineral processing and the quality requirements for the final products.
