The problem of cross-hole explosive malfunctioning in rock blasting (including sympathetic detonation, desensitization and cut-offs) is a function of delay and spacing in a blast which should be designed to avoid such occurrences. On a delay-spacing chart, the phenomenon of explosive malfunctioning is explained by dividing the chart into different regions, while the shape and size of each region could vary from one explosive to the other. Over seventy blasts have been carried out at the CANMET Experimental Mine to identify the malfunctioning characteristics of specific emulsion, water-gel and dynamite explosives. In each experiment, two parallel blastholes, 32 mm in diameter and 1.7 m deep, were drilled downwards in an underground drift.

Martha Mine, owned by Newmont Mining, Australia appointed Macmahon Contractors (NZ) Ltd as the mining contractor to drill, blast, and crush and convey ore for processing, followed by construction of a tails dam facility from the waste material. The open pit is located 140km(90miles) south east of Auckland, New Zealand in the middle of the township of Waihi (the main street of the town with a population of 3,500 is 90m from the perimeter of the open pit mine). Mining must proceed at 325,000m3 (of which involves blasting approximately 11,000 holes per month, in order to ensure continued ore supply.

The demolition of structures with explosive though most rapid, safe and efficient requires planned blast design parameters with respect to geometric and strength properties of the structure to be demolished. The paper, here deals with successtil demolition of three old bridge piers by different blast designs. These piers were 11 m tall and very close to the existing bridge, The plan distance of the old piers from the existing bridge varied between 43 m and 14,25 m. The paper also deals with the mathematical concepts for the causes of such action of demolition/dismantling of structures.

During the past year, the Canadian Centre for Automation and Robotics in Mining (CCARM), McGill University, Montreal, has been involved with INCO Ltd.'s Manitoba Division in investigating the extent and mechanisms of blasthole deviation. Drilling accuracy can well be regarded as perhaps the single greatest "controllable" factor influencing dilution in INCO's open sloping operations. As INCO and other underground mines seek to minimize dilution, while attempting to maximize productivity, issues of drilling accuracy become increasingly significant. It is important therefore, that means exist by which true blasthole trajectories can be determined, so that if needed, modifications to hole loading instructions or redrilling of holes can be ordered, thus avoiding poor blast results.

The University of Missouri-Rolla is currently researching the concept of using glass microspheres in explosives as taggants as part of a 3-year technical project funded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. These taggants are intended to provide two functions, first explosive detection and second post explosive event identification. The key priority is being able to detect explosives used in terrorist acts prior to detonation. The research on the use of microspheres includes the development of indicator taggants for the purpose of revealing the presence of hidden explosives, by either emitting radiation when bombarded with neutrons or emitting selective vapors, such as DMNB which may be readily “sniffed”. Of secondary importance, after an illegal explosion, the tags serve to identify the lot number, etc of the explosive. This information is to aid in the tracking, arrest, conviction and imprisonment of the perpetrators.

Recently there has been an unprecedented marketing effort to promote the advantages of various non-electric initiation systems. This activity has probably been influenced by a major manufacturer's decision to discontinue electric detonator production. Subsequently, distributors of explosive materials, rather than introducing new electric detonator brands, are emphasizing the use of existing non-electric systems. In many cases, such methods fill the need of explosive users in the quarry industry. However, the use of any initiation system should be based on performance, rather than the bent of the market or convenience to the supplier. This analysis is an evaluation of the performance of non-electric systems with emphasis on double trunk line and loop (redundant), as compared to precise electric detonators in use by Martin Marietta. Redundant non-electric detonators, even though more costly, offer the most reliable method of non-electric initiation. However, state-of-the-art precise electric detonators give the best overall performance, except in an environment involving extraneous electricity.

Calculation of response spectra for blast induced vibrations is necessary to fully understand and in some instances comply with frequency or distance related safe blasting criteria. Fortunately, micro-computer systems costing less than $5000 (such as that described herein) can be programmed to calculate response spectra. This system will calculate response spectra from paper as well as FM tape records. It both digitizes (prepares the record for computer calculation) as well as calculates. Programs for the calculation have been written in BASIC, an easy to understand language used with word processors. In addition to describing the equipment and operation of the micro computer the paper will discuss the process of and rules for digitization, use of the computer for record production and will present a simple physical model for understanding dynamic structural response.

For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by capsensitive explosives (DOT Class 1. l), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agents in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic ti,tmes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pet) tieI oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/set for the 1 to 10 pet range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4~mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding 5 and 10 pet aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

When we look out on our business landscape today, the words higher, faster, fdwther come to mind. Compliance issues, business integration, increasing production and profitability demands are converging in an age old industry and giving it a new twist. Not that the rock changes, rather that as the variables of our business change, the resulting “cut-off grade in business” turns ore into rock or rock into ore. The trick is to emphasize the latter. As with the miners of yore, what was recovered from the business enterprise had a lot to do with tools and skill. So it is today. When the casual observer looks at drilling and blasting operations today, many see the same basic offering in terms of equipment types and process. Looks, however, can be deceiving. As with the aviation sector, a given machine might took similar to previous generations of equipment, but in fact is radically different in terms of power, efficiency, accuracy, and range. So it is with hydraulic top-hammer drills today.

Automation, data analytics and optimisation are key trends in the mining industry. Doing more, and better, while expending less resources targets KPIs around efficiency and productivity. With the explosion of data, the next step is to develop an optimal level of processes and systems to harness this data to support value-in use decisions. Typically, significant amounts of resources and effort are invested to develop realistic simulation models. However, models are frequently not integrated with existing systems, and therefore are underutilised. When we consider the specialised process of blasting, integration with upstream and downstream processes is a significant driver to realise sustained improvements and value. The application of genetic algorithms and cloud computing to solving complex mining problems has advanced over the last 15 years, in particular with mine scheduling. Genetic algorithms are unique in that they support true multi-objective optimisation, utilising population-based methods to present trade-offs between multiple solutions. Secure in-cloud processing speeds up the processing, with results delivered in timeframes that are not feasible with desktop computing.

Vertical crater retreat mining (VCR) requires initiation methods that minimize debris in the borehole. The use of detonating cord and shock tube detonators eliminates debris that could interfere with subsequent loading operations and avoids the cost of using drilling equipment to clear the debris. The explosive must not be sensitive to the strength of detonating cord used, otherwise timing will be affected. “Slicing and Dicing” of product before “Air mailing” down boreholes may facilitate loading, especially in wet holes, and can result in product surrounding the detonating cord. Cord sensitivity testing confirmed that having the detonating cord surrounded by product significantly increases the likelihood of an energetic reaction. Careful formulation and testing, based on a thorough knowledge of the application and the role of ingredients in affecting performance, ensures reliable initiation and avoids cord sensitivity. The use of certain metallic nitrate salts, even in relatively small amounts, was found to significantly increase the cord sensitivity of watergel formulations. Evidence of increasing cord sensitivity includes increasing amounts of damage to product and packaging, to ejection of product from the test pipe, then cracking of the pipe, followed by deflagration then detonation of the product. Predictably, the likelihood of an energetic reaction increases with product temperature, cord strength, and borehole diameter, while it is inversely related to product density.

With the development of a new pit in Southern Illinois, production personnel with Arch were faced with serious equipment cycling problems. The solution to the problem was the development of a procedure that reduced drill movements on the highwall.

In these quarries, the blast vibration should be kept below a certain limit. One of these quarries is Tourah Portland Cement Company (TPCC) limestone quarry which, lies near important and historical large caves, within Tourah Mountain. Therefore, control of blast vibration level becomes very critical.

The Porgera joint venture and Dyno Noble have commissioned a joint project to optimise the drill and blast operations to increase the overall profitability of the mine. One of the aims of this project is to increase the throughput of semi autogenous (sag) mill by optimising the blast fragmentation, The work done so far clearly indicates that significant improvements in sag mill throughput can be achieved by optimizing the blast fragmentation. This paper discusses the planning, implementation and results achieved so far in this project.

Mining operations present a very different environment to the suppliers of explosives, initiating systems and services, both on surface and underground. Typical hazards include underground movement, air quality, ground stability, moving equipment, and the use of explosives. As contractors to the mining industry we do not have management control over the environment in which our people operate. The hazards and consequent level of risk that our people are exposed to in some mining operations are significantly higher by orders of magnitude than in a normal factory environment. These services include the provision of a bulk underground loading services, delivery of product into underground magazines, magazine management, value added blasting, conversions, rock-on-ground contracts, and blast management programs.
