This caused downtime of 112 hours, a repair cost of $200k and production loss of 162,000 tons, corresponding to a loss of $8.9M. A new locked charge protection system was installed on the two Tarkwa mills on 30 July 2010, mitigating this risk. This system calculates the ore angle in real time while the mill is starting up and trips the mill if the ore angle exceeds a trip angle setting. The calculation of the ore angle is derived from the mill motor rotor currents only - no mechanical transducers are required. The head of Gold Fields West Africa, Peter Turner, says of the new system: "This is excellent work and the type of technology that has had and will continue to have, major opportunity cost impacts on our business."

Introduction In the following discussion, boiler-feed and mine waters will be considered from the point of view of the problems arising from the chemical nature of the mineral and gaseous impurities they contain. The theories underlying some of these problems will be reviewed for the purpose of getting a clearer concept of the problems themselves. Certain terms of a chemical nature, necessary to the discussion, will be explained on the assumption that they are not generally familiar to mining engineers. Finally, an attempt will be made to correlate theory and practice, with the abject of establishing certain limits to factors relevant to the problems, and to show that these limits are justified by practical experience. The general problems occasioned by the presence of mineral and gaseous impurities in boiler-feed and mine waters are: (1) Scale formation and corrosion in boiler systems. (2) Corrosion of mine pumps and pump fittings. These will be discussed separately. Boiler Scale Typical analyses of waters available for use in steam power-plants are given in the accompanying Table (Table I). All analytical data are expressed in grains per Imperial gallon. The bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium in the raw waters are shown as normal carbonates in the Table. Substances in the first five rows constitute the encrusting solids. All the waters listed in Table I would be classified as 'very good' in the schedule of classification for boiler waters adopted by the American Association of Railway Chemists in 1887. In spite of this classification, however, the waters contain sufficient encrusting solids to cause serious scale trouble after prolonged evaporation.

"Block and panel cave mining methods are being increasingly proposed as they allow massive, deeply situated ore-bodies to be mined economically at a time when discovery rates of significant near surface deposits are declining. Cave-to-Mill, a mine-to-mill approach for block cave mines, defines ore block models with respect to both mine and mill performance. A cave-to-mill study for the New Afton block caving operation focused on identifying value opportunities related to fragmentation and sorting for a future lift as development progresses deeper. The lack of selectivity and potential for dilution associated with the block cave mining method results in many caving operations having to mine and either dispose of or process material that is below cut-off grade at certain stages of production. As an outcome of the study, the variation in cave fragmentation size and the sensitivity of mill throughput to feed size was examined. To evaluate the amenability of bulk and particle sorting, Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis and X-Ray Fluorescence sensors were tested. A conceptual bulk and particle sorting flowsheet is presented. Grade data from regular underground sampling was used to predict the performance of a bulk sorter. A heterogeneity analysis of material reporting to drawpoints helped to identify areas of the extraction level that experience high variations in grade and thereby stand to benefit from dedicated ore and waste material handling systems should underground bulk sorting be implemented.INTRODUCTION Block and panel caving are low-cost underground mass mining methods that are suitable for excavating weak, massive and steeply-dipping orebodies. Accordingly, cave mining methods have predominantly been used to mine copper porphyry and diamond bearing deposits. Due to the increasing depletion of near-surface orebodies, it is expected that block and panel caving methods will be increasingly used in the copper-gold industry. Their implementation holds significant potential to extend the life of existing open-pit operations by providing an economic means to access ore located at depths that are beyond the practical limits of open-pit mining. Examples of cave mines proposed for British Columbia include the Kwanika Mine, Red Chris underground, Kemess Underground project, and the Iron Cap and Mitchell cave mines of the Kerr-Sulphurets and Mitchell (KSM) project (Moose Mountain Technical Services, 2017; Imperial Metals, 2017; Golder Associates, 2017; Tetra Tech, 2016)."

Due to the increasing worldwide demand for raw materials and the resulting rise in commodity prices more expensive processing that is able to utilize complex ores becomes economically viable. This and increasing ecological awareness is why the interest in recycling and urban mining is steadily growing in Germany. In addition to that; landfills do also contain elements, which were not targeted over the period, when they were being accumulated. Examples are rare earths, indium, gallium, cadmium, arsenic, selenium and tellurium. Also copper, zinc and lead, the target components of ancient mining, can be obtained due to more effective processing and smelting technologies. Funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research, entitled "r³ ? Strategic Metals and Minerals ? Innovative Technologies for Resource Efficiency" also indicates the high level of strategic interest. It is against this background that the research project "Exploitation of the Raw Material Potential of Mining and Metallurgical Tips in Respect of Sustainability as Exemplified in the West Harz Mountains (ROBEHA)" has been implemented. A major concern of this project is the possible transfer of results to landfills in other areas. Therefore the development of an expert system based on the innovative processing methods and a method manual for urban mining are the central components of the investigation. This will provide an important contribution to the cost optimization of ensuing urban mining projects. To ensure the success of landfill mining projects it is necessary to record the composition and quality of the deposits accurately. Also the environmental impact caused by landfill mining and changes in the natural and cultural landscape will be considered in a multicriteria evaluation method. Depending on their origin the tips are divided into the categories mining, processing, and smelting. The content of a landfill and thus the economic potential in terms of urban mining is dependent on the type and composition of the deposits (host rock, gangue, and ore mineral), the available processing and smelting technology, and the target components at the time of mining. Zinc, for example, was not been processed until the 19th century, when it gained attention as being material of economic importance. After such knowledge about a landfill is obtained the decision for further investigations can be made. For a total of 158 landfills in the Harz Mountains, both the volume and the approximate contents of copper, zinc, and lead has been estimated for the different types of tips within past research projects. Based on the prices of the London Metal Exchange (LME) and a euro/dollar exchange rate of 0.76 (as of 03/05/2012) and assuming a minimum density of ? ? 1.5 t/m³ a average value of 1.6 billion ? in copper, zinc, and lead can be obtained. "In July 2017, Deilmann-Haniel signed a contract with IOO Slavkaliy to sink two 750 metre (m) deep freeze shafts for the Nezhinsky Potash mine in Belarus. This is the second shaft project where this technology is employed after two over 1,000 m deep shafts for a potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, have been sunk by the application of the Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology. Developed to sink shafts for green field projects in soft to medium hard rock, in frozen or unfrozen geology, the machine technology utilizes a roadheader-type cutterhead on a telescopic boom to mechanically excavate the rock, and a pneumatic mucking system to convey the muck from the face into the buckets. This leads to a manless face during the sinking cycle and thus a significant improvement in terms of workplace safety. For the Nezhinsky project, the SBR design was significantly modified in close cooperation between Deilmann-Haniel and Herrenknecht, based on the available experience and the special requirements of the project. Such modifications have been for example the adaptation of the Pneumatic Mucking System to cope with wet material as well as dry as originally planned or the shaft lining moving from shotcrete application to jump for and tubbing installation for which a step-change hands-off tubbing erector for the placement of segments was designed. Further modifications to optimize the machine technology for the requirements during shaft sinking were applied on the two machines for the Slavkaliy project as well as several revisions to match the special project requirements. The SBR is suitable for soft and medium hard rock up to 100 MPa UCS. The main design limits are maximum weight of the machine with 400 tonnes and length or height of 50 m due to the depth of the pre-sink. The Pneumatic Mucking System was changed in all components, sheaves and rope arrangement were redesigned and the concept of the hoist system was also re-engineered. The SBR in Belarus is configured for a daily sinking rate of three metres and all systems behind the cutting boom are not the bottle neck of the whole system. The works on site started in November 2017 including freeze hole drilling, construction works, site setup, installation of hoists winches, permanent headgears and other components required for sinking. The SBRs arrived on site in June/July 2018 and were preassembled on surface and then lowered into the 50 m pre-sink. SBR #1 started full face sinking in mid-December 2018, and SBR #2 in late January 2019. By the end of February 2019, the machines were at 150 m and 100 m depth respectively, and achieved up to 3.6 m/day concrete lined shaft. The SBR and the sinking system, the experiences, problems, technical solutions and performances of this challenging project will be presented in this paper."

The Mineral King Mine, owned and operated by Sheep Creek Mines is located in the Purcell mountain range of southeastern British Columbia. Production of lead and zinc concentrates commenced in 1954 some 60 years after the initial discovery. Low cost mining methods have been employed to extract 16,0C'O tons of ore monthly from large ore bodies formed by replacement in limestone. Extensive areas in the limestone are yet to be explored and success in the search for new ore bodies is anticipated.

The nature and distribution of radiation-induced defects (RIDs) in quartz from the Maw Zone, a yttrium- and rare-earth-element-enriched sandstone breccia complex exhibiting intense hydrothermal alteration, have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR spectra show that detrital quartz in sandstone, from five diamond drill holes intersecting the Maw Zone and one above the crest of the so-called Quartzite Ridge, contain only background-level RIDs, indicating that Ubearing fluids were absent in this area. However, close to the sandstone-basement unconformity, in hole WR-194 immediately west of the Quartzite Ridge, the concentration of RIDs in detrital quartz is significantly above background but at least an order of magnitude lower than those at the Key Lake and McArthur River deposits. Widespread drusy quartz at the Maw Zone, which signifies intense hydrothermal alteration, is associated with hematite-, sulfide- and carbonate-bearing mineral assemblages, which exhibit complex crosscutting relationships. EPR spectra of drusy quartz in all three types of mineral assemblages are low in RIDs as well, supporting the EPR evidence that fluids at the Maw Zone did not carry significant U. These EPR results suggest that, in spite of intense hydrothermal alteration and favorable structural geology, the Maw Zone is unlikely to host any significant U mineralization. Moreover, this study shows that the EPR technique is potentially a useful exploration tool, capable of determining whether individual alteration zones in the Athabasca Basin were associated with U-bearing fluids or not.

A DIGHEM survey was flown in the Belford-Montcalm Township area of Ontario in November 1975. This 600-linemile survey resulted in the detection of 134 EM anomalies. The Montcalm Township copper-nickel discovery yielded a single-line anomaly having a conductance of 154 mhos. This anomaly was highly visible because (a) it had the highest conductance in the survey area, (b) it correlated with a 175-gamma thumbprint-shaped magnetic anomaly and (c) it was isolated from long conductive bands. The deposit is a copper-nickel pyrrhotite body which occurs in gabbro and strikes north-south, parallel to the flight lines. The DIGHEM survey was flown north-south, because the exploration program was primarily concerned with locating copper-zinc sulphides in the east-west-striking felsic volcanics. The flight line passed close to the deposit and yielded a 9-ppm anomaly on the chart record. The computer analysis showed that a deposit of exceptionally high conductance (154 mhos) caused the relatively weak (9 ppm) anomaly. The ground follow-up program of magnetics and EM led quickly to the discovery drill hole, which penetrated the orebody in September 1976. Subsequent geophysical surveys consisted of horizontal-loop EM, pulse EM, magnetic and induced polarization surveys over an area of about 8 claims. In addition, a detailed DIGHEM" airborne survey was flown at a line spacing of 100 m to evaluate the entire property of 620 claims. This detailed survey yielded EM conductor maps and contour maps of resistivity, magnetics and enhanced magnetics.

Attention has been focused in recent decades upon the precipitation of metal sulphides from acid mine drainage (AMD) and pregnant leach solutions, due to the advantages of the sulphide precipitation process over traditional methods employing hydroxides. The aim of this work was thus to explore technologies for copper precipitation using either Na2S or biogenic sulphide. The recovery of copper sulphide was improved when the initial pH of the solution containing each metal was 4 or excess sulphide was employed. In such, a condition the removal efficiency was 99.9%, corresponding to a residual level of 0.1mg/L for copper in solution. Kinetic parameters for precipitation were determined from the particle size distributions using the method of moments, where the growth and nucleation rates, as well the agglomeration kernel, were calculated. The biogenic sulphide was a suitable alternative to sodium sulphide for copper removal as either sodium sulphide and biogenic sulphide can be utilized to precipitate such a metal allowing the effluent to be compliant with environmental legislation.

"The PFK FeNi Smelter was re-commissioned by Solway Resources in 2002, ending a long period of economic decline in the adjacent town. In 2009 Hatch was retained to design, supply and install a custom furnace crucible that would accommodate a capacity increase from 34 MW to 40 MW and increase campaign life through binding and cooling technologies, as part of ongoing improvement efforts. The involvement of PFK personnel was critical to the successful integration of the new furnace technology with the existing process and operational practice. The furnace upgrade project was completed in 18 months during 2010 – 2011. Since start-up, the furnace has exceeded production expectations, operating successfully at 42 MW.INTRODUCTIONAfter ceasing operations in the 1990’s, the Pobuzhsky Ferronickel Combine (PFK), located in central Ukraine, was stripped of useful equipment and deteriorated while dormant. The surrounding town experienced a period of economic decline throughout the 1990’s. Solway Industries purchased the complex in 2002 and began a systematic incremental program to re-commission the smelter using both local expertise and specialists from other parts of the former Soviet Union. This led to the re-birth of PFK as a successful toll-smelting complex, and a renaissance for the surrounding economy.As part of the continuing improvement program, PFK approached Hatch in 2009 to study the possibility of a capacity expansion from 34 MW to 40 MW. It was decided, based on the results of the study, to design and install a custom furnace crucible integrating the unique PFK FeNi process with modern Hatch furnace technology. This novel approach had many benefits, including: maximum re-use of existing furnace components (off-gas, feed equipment and transformers), minimal impact on upstream and downstream equipment and building structure, and the retention of a familiar operating regime. The latter was a key factor in the success of the project, as it allowed the extensive operating expertise of the PFK staff to remain highly relevant to the upgraded furnace. This led to minimized capital investment, a rapid start-up and no significant operational challenges switching over to the new equipment incorporating Hatch furnace technology."

"In efforts to improve dust control during deep cut continuous mining a supplemental atomizing spray system, mounted on 14CM15 continuous miner, has been designed and successfully implemented in a U.S. coal mine. The mine is 2.1 m (7-ft) high and uses a blowing curtain face ventilation system with 1.1 m (3.5-ft) curtain offset from the rib. The face ventilation design parameters were set to 9.4 m3/s (20,000-cfm); 4.2 m3/s (9,000-cfm) line curtain flow rate, and 3.8 m3/s (8,000-cfm) scrubber capacity. The performed in-mine measurements, before and after the implementation of the atomizing spray system, showed a significant decrease in the respirable dust levels at the operator place as well as at the return. The paper describes the supplemental water spray system design and performance supported by three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and in-mine test data.INTRODUCTIONThe work on this project have started in 2015 with a study of the conventionally applied face ventilation layouts. The specific behaviour of the face ventilation system have been analyzed trough in-mine measurements and computer modeling of typical cut scenarios. An computer modeling methodology have been developed for estimation the respirable dust concentration (RDC) using tracer gas to RDC contour mapping, calibrated by a single point value, provided by in-mine measurement. Utilizing the results of this study the engineering staff of the mine designed and implemented a supplemental atomizing spray system to improve the dust control during the deep cut continuous mining. Today the atomized spray system is successfully applied demonstrating steady performance and a significant decrease in respirable dust concentration on the working places of the continuous miner (CM) and coal transporters (CT) operators as well as at the return air stream. Information about the applied type of spray nozzles provided by other researchers (Cheng, 1973; Dick et al., 1996; Organiscak & Page, 1998; Pollock & Organiscak, 2007) and spray system manufacturers (Spraying System Co, 2011–2018; Steinen Mfg., 2016) have been used in this project. CFD code and simulation approach validated in a study conducted in 2000-2014 have been applied (Turner et al., 2002; Wala et al., 2004, 2007; Petrov, 2014)."

A numerical model for predicting microporosity formation in aluminum castings has been developed, which describes the redistribution of hydrogen between solid and liquid phases, the transport of hydrogen in liquid by diffusion and Darcy flow in the mushy zone, One of the key features of the model is that it uses a two-stage approach for porosity prediction, In the first stage, the volume fraction of porosity is calculated based on the reduced pressure, whereas, in the second stage, at fractions solid greater than the liquid encapsulation point, the fraction porosity is calculated based on the volume of liquid trapped within the continuous solid network, which is estimated using a correlation based on the Niyama parameter, The porosity model uses thermal data calculated using the commercial finite element package ABAQUSTM. The model has been applied to examine the evolution of porosity in a series of experimental samples cast using unmodified A356 in which the initial hydrogen content was varied from 0,048 to 0.137 [cc/100g], A comparison between the model predictions and the experimental measurements indicates good agreement in terms of the variation in porosity with distance from the chill and the variation resulting from initial hydrogen content.

"Metal additive manufacturing has been a revolutionary step in designing new complex shapes with faster and cleaner building capacity in comparison to subtractive manufacturing processes. The ability to print lightweight alloys such as aluminum has made metal 3D printing attractive to different industrial sector from aerospace to energy and bioengineering. Of particular interest in this study, are the mechanical and microstructural properties of AlSi10Mg-200°C alloys. In this project, samples were 3D-printed in horizontal direction using an EOS M290 machine by Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technique. Uniaxial tensile tests and high strain-rate impact e tests were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties and to study the repeatability of the process. A constitutive model is developed to predict the results of the mechanical tests at varying strain rates to better understand the high strain-rate behaviour of these alloys. Using optical microscopy, features such as scan tracks and melt pools within the AlSi10Mg-200°C samples were observed, and the microstructure was observed to be homogenous. The previously listed tests were compared to the results obtained for similar cast alloy counterpart, i.e. A360.0.INTRODUCTION A relatively new way of manufacturing parts is on the increase as rapid prototyping becomes increasingly popular throughout the world. Additive manufacturing is a process which, given a 3D model, uses metallic material in powder form to build a part layer by layer until completion (Gu, Meiners, Wissenbach, & Poprawe, 2013). This way of rapid prototyping is very attractive in comparison to other possibilities because of its ability to accommodate complex design and geometries. Conventional manufacturing methods have limitations when it comes to complex geometries, but additive manufacturing allows for increased design flexibilities while maintaining a light and stable final product (Murr et al., 2012). It also allows for a reasonable cost, especially for small batch sizes that would otherwise be extremely expensive."

The Mary River iron ore deposits were discovered in the 1960?s. The high quality of the deposits was immediately evident, and drilling programs were successful in defining a resource adequate for supporting a feasibility study. Through a combination of ownership, market and political forces, the deposits were not developed. Having missed the window of opportunity, the project remained dormant for over three decades. Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation, with its 100% ownership of the Mary River deposits, began trading publicly in 2004. Modern exploration and metallurgical test work began in 2004 and has continued in 2005 and 2006, resulting in total expenditures during this period of almost C$60 million. In May 2006, an engineering team lead by Aker Kvaerner E&C, a division of Aker Kvaerner Canada Inc., completed a scoping study based on the first of five identified deposits. Highlights of that study include direct shipping of high quality lump ore to Europe over a 34 year mine life at a production rate of 10 million tonnes per annum, based on an indicated resource of 309 million tonnes at 66.1% Fe and an inferred resource of 28 million tonnes at 65.9% Fe. Capital costs were estimated at C$1.5 billion. Using iron ore prices approximately 36% below that of the 2006 market, a pre-tax internal rate of return of 15% was estimated assuming equity financing. Payback on initial capital was 5.9 years. The pre-tax life-of-mine cash flow was estimated to be C$6.3 billion. As a result of this study, Baffinland initiated a Definitive Feasibility Study, under the management of Aker Kvaerner, which is scheduled for completion in December 2007. This paper touches on the geology of the deposits, the current resource and the outlook for expansion. Project permitting, construction planning, logistical challenges and ocean shipping considerations are discussed, providing a current perspective on the project scale, scope and timeline for commercial production. In addition, an overview of the Company?s bulk sampling program will be provided.

The purpose of this paper is to present, briefly, an outline of Canadian practice in the milling of gold-bearing ores- not, however, including those auriferous ores which are mined and milled primarily for their content of some other metal. It is not the writer's intention to offer technical data, nor to discuss any particular phase of the metallurgy, but rather to give a general résumé of past and present methods. As it is only within recent years that gold milling has assumed prominence in Canada, much of the technology is modern, and detailed articles describing the practice adopted in the several mining districts, and recording the various changes and innovations that have been made from time to time, are to be found in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and in the mining journals. Prior to the year 1860, any gold that had been produced in Canada had come from placer operations in British Columbia, but ' during that year lode gold was discovered in Nova Scotia, in quartz veins, and in several localities mines were opened and small mills of very simple character were erected to treat the ore. These plants, equipped with stamps, or arrastre, were only effective in recovering the free gold. Concentration and chlorination were introduced in an endeavour to save the gold occurring in intimate association with metallic minerals, but, due to various circumstances, gold mining and milling did not progress in Nova Scotia.

CANADA is not an old country we are just now planning to celebrate our lOOth Anniversary. Nonetheless, we have already developed some well-established traditions. One of the minor traditions is the standard speech on the need for more research and development in Canadian industry. I am sure that you have all listened to it many times -I certainly have given it more than once. Much as I am tempted to honour this tradition by repetition, I shall only give you a thumbnail sketch of the ancient address for the benefit of any unfortunate visitors who have not heard it before, and also to provide a base for some further ideas that I want to leave with you. Briefly, the traditional story is that, for a variety of historical and environmental reasons that I shall not attempt to describe in detail, research and development in Canada has grown up in a pattern that is ill adapted to foster the expansion of our manufacturing industries. The aim of this paper is to study the scientificity and reliability of three coal gas indices used to predict coal fire disasters, namely Graham?s ratio, CO/CO2 ratio, Litton ratio and their different characteristics and service conditions. Data from a programmed temperature experiment were applied to check their veracity and accuracy. Each index performed well in detecting the level of a fire. We conclude that it is better to redefine the definition through experimentation before applying a given index. Integrated analysis of the results can provide reliable reference data for predicting spontaneous combustion of coal.
