Abstract

This paper describes the history of the development and application of the electric mining shovel in open-pit mining, dea1ing particularly with far-reaching advancements in three primary areas: metallurgy, mechanical design and electrical systems. Hoist drives and crowd drives, including the Magnetorque and Electrotorque systems, and the integral propel drive are given close attention.
