The process of defining the external environmental costs of mining activities, devising appropriate mechanisms to internalise them is complex and is likely to be a gradual.Australia's competitiveness could be seriously affected if , in terms of incorporating environmental costs, we were to exceed other resource producing nations.Australia has a great deal at stake in the debate and therefore we need to proceed carefully and be fully aware of the environmental and economic issues.

GeoScience Victoria has completed quantitative assessments of undiscovered gold endowment in the northern parts of the Bendigo and Stawell Zones. The under cover area in the Bendigo Zone (10 000 km2) is likely to contain approximately 1000 t and at least 290 t of gold in undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold deposits. For the under cover area in the Stawell Zone (30 000 km2), the estimates are approximately 1200 t and at least 200 t of undiscovered mesozonal orogenic gold. Dealing with Aboriginals and various others purporting to represent them has become part and parcel of exploration and mining in Australia, whereas 20 years ago it was not. The author has been involved in dealings with Aboriginal groups over this period. The following paper is a summary of the social background to such dealings and a compendium of rules for the newcomer to this aspect of the resource industry.

In February 1974 a continuous synthetic polymer dosing plant was installed at Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited's Pellet Plant at Dampier. The polymer, supplied in a liquid sus- pension, is used to improve the drying characteristics of green pellets. 'Three years of test work were involved in the development of the use of polymers. Polymer is continuously dosed to the balling spray water system at a rate determined by the flow of spray water to the discs. Problems have been experienced with handling the polymer in 44 gallon drums, the increased viscosity of the spray water, disc overloads, increased bed strength and increased "stickiness" of pellet fines.

Congratulations on your considerable enterprise in securing the opportunity to have this international conference here in Brisbane - and congratulations on your success in attracting such a distinguished audience from so many nations, with such a broad selection of papers. It is a notable achievement that in the year in which Australia is celebrating two hundred years since settlers first came fran Britain, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is responsible for some ten major conferences, of which at least four are specifically international, or have a very strong international involvement.

The grades of alluvial ore deposits are low compared with grades of hard rock mining. This factor, combined with other parameters of irregular distribution of particles, bedrock irregularities, size of particles, nugget effect, ore characteristics, and wet horizons, combine to place alluvial deposits among the most difficult to evaluate, and on which to establish an ore reserve with a high degree of confidence. With increased geological input, correct selection and implementation of sampling method, due regard to sample representativity and process design, these confidence levels can be achieved.

There are two main challenges in analysis of spectral data: to output as accurate an interpretation of the sample mineral assemblage as possible and to then use the spectral data to map out trends (downhole, across section or traverse) that will assist the exploration geologist to target drilling and further exploration. This paper will discuss methods of extracting the maximum amount of information from spectral data and examples of plotting the information downhole, in section and plan view to assist in exploration and mining. The concentrations of trace metals in deep hydrothermal solutions (~1 km depth, 200 to >300¦C) from modern hydrothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and Ladolam, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea were obtained using a purpose-built downhole fluid sampler and ICP-MS analyses. The results range widely: gold (<0.1 - 23 ppb); silver (<3 - 2400 ppb); arsenic (100 - 18 000 ppm); antimony (2 - 1200 ppm); mercury (<1 - 78 ppb) and provide the basis for quantifying the flux and fate of metals as well as assessing their sources (Simmons and Brown, 2006, 2007). Aims of the Forum A contribution from Dr Robin Batterham, Vice President, RIO TINTO Research & Technology and a member of The AusIMM Standing Technology Advisory Qroup. Dr Robin Batterham is of view that the inevitability of automation in the minerals industry and the importance of addressing the human implications. He also outlined Rio Tinto's approach to automation. The progressive introduction of automation into mining operations will be revolutionary in its effects. This is the experience in other industries and it will be no different in mining. Mining companies most successful at implementing the new technologies will gain relative competitive advantage and those manufacturers who produce the most desirable automated equipment for miners will also gain market share.

The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Also, the method of economic efficiency factors is outlined.All these methods make possible the best choice of a driving system, from the as-pect of electric energy saving. Two examples are given.

In order to see the sand mining industry in the context of the coastal plain environment, the following points are noted. The coastal plain comprises several different geomorphological and ecological entities, some or all of which may be profoundly different from their condition before European colonisation, Sand mining is only one of a number of competing land uses which modify the environment of a given area. The frontal dune system in particular has undergone considerable deterioration and with the pressures of an ever increasing population, this deterioration will accelerate until an adequate control policy is Implemented.

R F Johnston 1 ABSTRACT The possibilities for bacterial leaching of refractory gold ores found in the Central Victorian region of Australia are examined. The behaviour of bacteria, especially 77iobacillus ferroaridans is outlined and the effects of these when they are exposed to pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite are examined. The factors which are particular to Central Victoria are outlined and the possibility of adapting a bacterial culture to suit the conditions is discussed. It is concluded that a bacterial leaching system is a feasible proposition and that it could enhance leaching rates and yields.

Spectacular high-temperature hot springs (æblack smokersÆ) on the deep ocean floor are producing economic concentrations of base and precious metals. Mining these seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits is about to become a reality in 2010, subject to the timely issuance of permits. Three Australia-based private companies and two government agencies inJapan and Korea have exploration licenses or applications covering vast areas of the seabed in the western Pacific targeting SMS deposits. Technological and financial challenges for recovery of seafloor sulfide deposits are being met and mining these may be less environmentally deleterious than mining on land. The automatic control of grinding mills for optimum performance is an area of control which can benefit from new control concepts and technology. Economic pressures dictate that the mining industry undertake changes in process design, control system strategy and operations organisation that call for innovative reappraisals of the control system performance necessary to enhance the functions of the process operator. As more dependence is placed on instrumentation the chances of abrupt, total loss of process control through an entire production complex becomes a major concern of the plant manager.

The present value of the future profits of a mining operation, using a discount factor which represents the effective cost of venture capital, provides a measure of the projected success of the operation. The present value can be maximised by appropriate selection of cut-off grades successively through the life of the operation. A case study is presented in which detailed optimisation of cut-off grade results in a worthwhile increase in profitability compared with the use of a constant, break even, cut-off grade.Some implications of this approach to profit optimisation are discussed.

Part of a four-year course in metallurgy, dealing with metallurgical process engineering, was designed for students to acquire knowledge and skill from physical science, metallurgy, process engineering, and social science. Principles of education, and guidelines obtained from a study of professional practice, indicated that students may learn effectively through a planned sequence of problem-solving exercises based on the diverse functions of metallurgists in industry. The more important characteristics of the curriculum and a few illustrations of the problems are included. An outline is given of the current procedures used to develop parts of the curriculum, and of the students' diffic- ulties and achievements.

Heavy media separation serves to upgrade mill feed and reduce unit operating costs, allowing ores to be mined which could other wise be uneconomic. At the Aberfoyle mine at Rossarden in north-east Tasmania, a simple heavy media operation using a converted Akins screw classifier as a separating vessel, removes barren quartz from mineralised material. At the Cleveland mine at Luina on the west coast of Tasmania a more complex ore mix requires a versatile operation combining hydro-dynamic and static separation equipment to provide an efficient beneficiation circuit. The two operations are briefly described with a background of basic heavy media separ- ation practice.

Extensive personal experience in the USA and Australia has shown that Australians working in suitable work environments are capable of world-class performance. To build such work environments, mining leaders need to ditch two common management approaches that have not succeeded. Firstly, stop relying on traditional methods of trying to change people's behaviour simply by using communication alone to change attitudes and then change behaviour. Analysis of human behaviour explains why this approach fails in all industries. Secondly, stop trying to improve productivity by just running harder and increasing capital investment. Understanding work processes explains why this approach has limited success.
