Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012. Exploration programs for both alluvial (placer) and hardrock platinum group metal deposits are being conducted in Papua New Guinea by a joint venture between Degussa AG and Pancontinental Mining Limited. Prospective areas were defined on the basis of ultramafic/ophiolitic source rocks shedding detrital platinoid grains. Field sampling techniques including churn drilling, together with appropriate laboratory analytical and mineralogical techniques, were developed and are contributing to the success of the exploration programs.

There are two main aspects of coal preparation to which the operational Research Executive of the National Coal Board has applied computer models. The first is in the planning of preparation plants and the first part of this paper discusses Simprep, a computer package that was designed to help on these calculations. The other is the development of control schemes to improve quality control, and the second part of the paper deals with the development of simulation techniques for this purpose.

The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) has been successfully using mini computers in its open cut strip and pit coal planning for the past six years. A recent development within the computerised Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) provides the facility for the generation, evaluation, and simulation of colliery workings.Existing computer programs for collieries were studied, but none met the requirements of BHP's underground mine planners.Consequently, it was decided to develop programs, based on those existing within BHP for open cut strip and open cut pit mine planning. The new planning facility was designed to enable any number of proposed colliery developments and operating plans to be evaluated against optimistic, most likely and pessimistic geological lease area interpretations.In mine planning, sensitivity studies should be conducted to determine the likely effects on production, development costs and colliery economics of changes in mine design and budgeted equipment productivity. By automating the manual calculations involved, the computer programs provide the ability to conduct numerous and extensive sensitivity studies. Hence an optimum mine design for budgeting purposes can be derived quickly with an improved degree of confidence in the long term viability of the proposed development.

Airblast overpressure legislative limits can be extremely difficult to meet throughout Australia, which has by far the most stringent limits of any nation in the world. As the difficulty in meeting the limits is strongly dependent on the scale of mining, it is not surprising that the Australian coal mining industry is experiencing particular difficulties in meeting these limits. Eight full scale overburden blasts have been modelled with respect to overpressure impact for a strip coal mine, involving both dragline (cast) blasting and pre-strip (non-cast) blasting. Overpressure levels in the range 100 to 125 dBL have been measured at distances varying from 2.4 to 5.7 km, and modelling has successfully estimated both the amplitude and shape of overpressure waveforms to within an average of 1.2 dBL. Typical errors of prediction are around 0.6 dBL. This accuracy of prediction has been achieved by considering the impact of only the face holes, and the accuracy of prediction of both shape and amplitude suggests that it is these holes which dominate the environmental overpressure impact at distances in the range two to six kilometres, for cast and pre-strip blasting operations. Modelling has been based upon the Elemental Overpressure Wavelet proposed by Richards and Moore (2002), incorporating actual hole coordinates, actual delay timing, and assumed delay scatter statistics. The incorporation of delay scatter statistics has been particularly significant, and allows the determination of the range over which the peak overpressure levels are expected to vary. To date, modelling has considered only the use of conventional pyrotechnic delays, though simple adjustment to the scatter definition would allow estimation of overpressure levels, and their variability, with electronic delays.

In Morwell Open Cut brown coal mine, the overburden 'firehole' materials which have resulted from ancient coal fires vary-from hard baked clays to firm laminated lacustrine clays. The need to pre-strip designated areas to reduce the slope height and attain safe digging conditions for the bucket wheel excavator operation is now accepted practice at the open cut mine. In this study, the inherent spatial variability of undrained shear strength of the clay materials has been incorporated in a visco plastic, finite element based, probabilistic slope stability analysis. Data on the costs of initial pre-stripping, excavation and slope failure are collected to provide an economic basis for the optimisation of the design of the overburden batters in Morwell Open Cut. This improved stability modelling is enabling costly pre-stripping to be minimised while ensuring acceptable slope stability conditions and minimising the risk to personnel and plant.

The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western Tasmania uses innovative solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. This paper covers the development of a suitable paste fill system to meet the specific needs of the Henty Gold Mine and the successful commissioning of this system for the first time in Australia.

Quartzite is a common feedstock used for the production of silicon by reduction at high temperatures in a submerged electric arc furnace. Silica fume, formed as a by-product in this process, contains crystalline silica in the respirable fraction. The crystalline silica in the fume represents entrained quartz derived from unreacted quartzite raw material within the furnace. A knowledge of the fragmentation of quartzite feedstock, in response to thermal disaggregation in the furnace, is important in feedstock selection to help minimise (a) the amount of crystalline silica in fume, critical from an occupational health and safety perspective, and (b) impurity levels necessary to achieve the highest possible purity of product silicon. In this study, a series of quartzites has been assessed in terms of the above requirements and correlations drawn between mineralogical and chemical characteristics. Alkaline solubility correlates with grain-size and level of stored strain in the quartz matrix. Grain-size affects the surface area available for attack while stored strain enhances the chemical reactivity of the strained matrix as well as profoundly influencing the disaggregation and microfracturing characteristics of strained grains and, hence, available surface area for chemical reaction.

The passive interception and in situ treatment of groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has, within the past decade, become an accepted remedial approach to the control of plumes containing dissolved organic and inorganic contaminants. Since the first applications of the technology in the early-1990s, there have been several field-scale PRBs that have provided excellent treatment of dissolved metals in groundwater. Additional commercial applications and demonstration projects continue to be developed. Three field-scale applications and supporting laboratory columns have shown that several thousands of milligrams per litre of sulfate, more than 1000 mg/L iron, and several tens of milligrams per litre of other metals can be removed from groundwater by PRBs that promote sulfate reduction. The reactive materials, which incorporate various forms of organic carbon, promote microbially mediated sulfate reduction, the generation of hydrogen sulfide, and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble iron and other metal sulfide minerals. Effective performance has been achieved by PRBs installed at a mine-tailings impoundment in 1995 (Sudbury, Ontario) and at an industrial facility (Vancouver, British Columbia). These PRBs have removed iron and other metals from groundwater. Similar materials were also used to create reactive layers within test cells directly in a tailings impoundment in 1999 (Timmins, Ontario) with the objective of removing iron and sulfate from the pore water before it migrates from the tailings impoundment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to provide excellent removal of chromium (VI) in a PRB, which was installed at the US Coast Guard facility in Elizabeth City in 1996, by reduction and precipitation reactions. Laboratory tests have also shown that ZVI reduces As(V) to As(III), which is subsequently removed from solution by co-precipitation with iron oxyhydroxides. In groundwater containing sulfate, ZVI and mixtures containing organic carbon can promote sulfate reduction and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble arsenic and other metal sulfides. A trial PRB system was installed in 2001 and was shown to attenuate arsenic and other electroactive metals in groundwater at an industrial facility in northwestern Ontario. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a waste material generated by the steel industry, has shown excellent potential for the removal of phosphate, elements such as arsenic and water-borne pathogens from groundwater in field and laboratory tests.

As mining operations become larger and more complex, larger volumes of geological, geophysical, and production data must be manipulated and interpreted on a day-to-day basis. Because of the large volume of data, more sophisticated data storage strategies, interpretation tools, and visualisation tools must be used by exploration and mining operations in order to remain competitive. Critical to better practice is an understanding of the basic syntax and character of geological and mining data, expressed in the form of a data model. In the short-term, a data model can be used to implement or evaluate schemes for data storage or exchange. It can be used to evaluate software. In the longer term, a data model is essential to the design of the next generation of software for 3D geological modelling. In this and the related paper (Lin et al, 1995) the data model in use by CSIRO is presented, together with: 1. examples of the use of data transfer in the linkage of existing mining software; and 2. examples of the use of the data model in software design.

Seam gases are the most important atmos- phere contaminants in Australian collieries, their importance increasing with depth; C02 as well as CH4 may be important in intruded envir- onments. The generally high rank of the coal, with low moisture content, makes for abnormal dust production. The other contaminants are introduced and subject to better control, in- cluding products of spontaneous combustion. Due to market situations the generally lower rank and higher sulphur coals more prone to self heating are mined less. Future mining at greater depths should see greater problems with atmosphere contaminants.

The exploration and mining risks are investigated and compared to the risks of smelting, secondary processing and other normal industrial activities. This study concentrates on the risk before, or at the investment decision. Internal and external risks are distinguished. Internal risks are the risks inherent in every engineering design and common to all projects. The main external risks are the financial risk, changes in prices, location problems and geological factors. Financial risks concern every capital-intensive and export-oriented project and cannot be considered as typical mining risks. Changes in prices, i.e. the market risk, concern every industry using raw materials, but the market risk is especially accentuated in the mining industry. Problems of location and infrastructure are normally more significant in mining than in other projects, and geological risks are unique to mining. All these risks associated with mining projects combine to form a risk at least twice as high as that for other normal industrial activities. Within the range of profitability of mines, which on average is the same as in the manufacturing industry, only a few highly profitable mines exist. These few mines are the sole reward for the high risks taken.

Highly weathered ground, limited collar options and the need to achieve a desired outcome at the lowest possible cost led to the need to adopt a construction approach that had no established design methodology. The newest ventilation shaft at Mandalay Resources’ Costerfield Operations had to be established to a depth of 30 m through poor ground best described as ‘sticky swelling clay’, some of which was contained within an old backfilled pit.The ability to excavate a traditional presink was not possible due to limited space and the introduction of men into the shaft was to be avoided due to the associated safety risks and corresponding increase in cost. Piling in conjunction with raise boring and remote fibrecrete application was identified as a possible solution that could achieve the desired outcome at an acceptable level of risk.Construction of the piles was challenging and required continual refinement until an acceptable level of productivity could be achieved. Limitations on concrete delivery was taken into consideration to ensure hole stand-up time was acceptable and re-drills were not required. The adoption of a set process from alignment, drilling, concrete placement and testing ensured the desired design was achieved. Mine operators should consider the use of piling as a method of shaft stabilisation for the portion of raise bored shaft that passes through the weathered zone.The importance of quality control and attention to detail through the entire shaft construction process cannot be underestimated as issues such as insufficient geotechnical investigation, pile and pilot hole deviation, concrete and fibrecrete quality, as well as delays in the application of fibrecrete can place the success of the project at risk.This paper outlines key learnings from a client’s perspective with regards to the concept, planning, design, execution and completion of a 3.1 m diameter raise bore shaft through both weathered and highly structured ground at the Augusta Mine.CITATION:Green, S and Austerberry, R, 2014. Himalayan ranges on the northern border of India are source of many perennial rivers and suitable sites for large dams have been located therein. However, Himalayas are young mountains and comprise of comparatively weaker rocks having adverse geological features like shear seams, thrust zones, minor and major faults and intense jointing. Tehri dam project under construction, is located in lower Himalayas. It envisages construction of a 260.5 m high earth and rock fill dam and an underground power station of 2000 MW (Eight machines of 250 MW each, four of which will be reversible) installed capacity. This dam will be the highest and the underground complex will be the largest to be constructed in India in the Himalayas. The under- ground complex comprises of 25 km of tunnels varying in diameter from 6 m to 11 m and seven large cavities of various sizes, the biggest being 22 m in width, 194 m in length and 65 m in height. Rock formation in the power house complex belong to phyllites having various joint sets spaced from 0.5 m to 3 m. Due to the poor geological conditions and closely spaced net work of large cavities, the planning, analysis and design of the cavities is a challenging job. Many aspects have to be considered in determining the sizes, locations and orientations of the various cavities taking into account the properties and jointing pattern of rock mass, functional requirements and economics. Correct evaluation of loads and forces is necessary for economical design of supporting system for the various cavities. Rock loads on the roof of cavities and their supporting system will be assessed with the help of the latest methods. The stability of the rock mass around the cavity will be evaluated by elasto- plastic method using finite or boundary element techniques. A scheme of field investigations, laboratory tests and instrumentation for deter- mining rock properties in preconstruction stage and for monitoring behaviour of the underground cavities during and after construction is envisaged.

As part of its operations Hamersley Iron operates a heavy medium Concentrator to upgrade low grade, unsaleable iron ore to produce saleable lump and fines products. Firstly, the attempts at delivering a blended feed in both chemical and physical characteristics are presented. Improvements in blending controls are shown to have given process performance improvements. Secondly, improvements to the feed preparation section are detailed. These alterations are providing a much cleaner feed to the subsequent processing stages.

The cycle time between adjacent stopes is critical to achieving the required production rate from 3500 Orebody; one of the Enterprise Mine orebodies. Current Mt Isa cemented fills require a 90-day cure period which had to be cut to 30 days while maintaining the required strength criteria. The Enterprise Mine Feasibility Study recommended that this be achieved by Cemented Slurry Rock Fill (CSRF), but that on-going research into paste fill be continued. The continuation of the research, in conjunction with overseas visits has recommended that the 3500 Orebody be filled with paste fill, with the potential to fill other orebodies. The paste fill will comprise cyclone and thickener dewatered copper tailings to which Portland Cement (PC) is added before vertical borehole delivery and undergound pipeline reticulation to individual stopes. The benefit is not only re-use of copper tailings but also much reduced binder usage.

Lemington coal mine is operating in an environmentally sensitive area in the Hunter Valley, NSW, Australia. Late in 1999 the southern pit was developed using a series of box cut blasts. After the initial development the area would have been free dug due to the soft, well-jointed nature of the deposit. However, it was decided to trial drill and blast to determine if shovel productivity could be improved to enable an overall mining cost reduction. The initial trial blast results were less than satisfactory with both environmental issues occurring and the desired shovel productivity not being achieved. An audit of the blasts indicated that wet ground and the presence of soft clay inter-bedded with harder rock caused the poor blast results. Also, water-affected explosive product combined with explosive energy loss into soft ground led to flat spots and tight digging in the hard band areas, resulting in the lower dig rates. Lemington Mine and Orica Explosives developed a plan to match the rock with the appropriate explosive type and energy. This resulted in a number of blasts over a six-month period using a new non fuming explosive product, æNovaliteÆ. The results have been excellent with the environmental issues being totally resolved and dig rates improved, enabling reductions in mining costs. This has allowed the mine to continue with their exemplary record of environmental management whilst achieving operational efficiencies.

For some time the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA) has been investigating the application of new mining methods and equipment to minimise the cost impact of the steadily increasing depth of mining brought about by the 20¦ dip of the coal seams at the Leigh Creek Coalfield. Exhaustive examination of all suitable mining systems showed that highly mechanised systems involving belt conveyors displayed no eco- nomic or operational advantages over shovel and truck methods. However, the configuration of the Leigh Creek coalfield allows for two quite different approaches to mining by shovel and truck. The current strip mining method involves removing overburden from the highwall in 60 m to 200 m wide strips to progressively expose the coal down dip, and requires all waste to be hauled to the surface. The alternative ter- race haulback method involves opening a boxcut to full depth at one end of the coalfield, then mining the full section along strike and placing the spoil in the mined out area. On a strictly economic basis, the latter is clearly advantageous, but the former has significant less tangible advantages. In deciding between the two methods ETSA is faced with the need to examine the applicability of each method under a wide range of possible future demands on the coalfield, and to assess the importance of many intangible factors.

The longwall panels at Clarence Colliery have experienced intermittent sudden weightings on the face that have caused some production delays. These weightings have typically been more severe on the wider faces. A program of surface subsidence and extensometer monitoring was undertaken above Longwalls 4 and 5 to investigate the behaviour of the overburden strata during longwall extraction on two faces of different widths.The monitoring indicated that a dome shaped zone of large downward movement extends up into the overburden strata to a height equal to about the panel width.
