A fast, non-contact technique for measuring sizes of rock fragments on a conveyor belt is presented. An image processing technique called active stereopsis is used which makes use of a light stripe projected on to the surface of the fragments on the conveyor belt. A CCD TV camera is used to capture the shape of the distorted light stripe. the video image of this shape is then processed by a computer program so that the 3D profile of the surface can be obtained by triangulation. The sizes of the rock fragments are then calculated from this profile. The speed of the technique is improved by calibrating the light stripe system before measurement begins so that the profile of the fragment surface can then be measured using simple geometry. The technique is fast and highly parallel so that it is able to operate in real time.

Using normal low pressure filtration methods for the dewatering of fine china clays, the best that can be achieved is cakes with about 30% moisture. In order to get the moisture levels down to acceptable levels the traditional method used is thermal drying, which is both costly and dust creating. It was to improve this process that ECC International embarked upon a programme of development of filtration equipment using high pressure to achieve significantly lower moisture levels. This development work investigated several design philosophies and culminated in the production of two quite different solutions. The High Pressure Plate Press uses round plates / chambers of one metre diameter and a filtration pressure of 70 bar. This press is fully automatic and produces a surface dry cake that has sufficient plasticity for the further processing that is required on specific qualities of china clay. The TUBE PRESS on the other hand uses a unique design configuration and operates at a filtration pressure of 100 or 140 bar, depending upon the model. The TUBE PRESS produces a brittle, surface dry cake that is easy to handle and a filtrate that is usually crystal clear. The TUBE PRESS achieves a much higher degree of separation than is possible with conventional equipment, which is particularly important if the filtrate is the product. Over the past 15 years plants incorporating both HP Plate Presses and TUBE PRESSES have been installed in the china clay operations of ECC International and are giving excellent trouble free service. The TUBE PRESS has also proved to be extremely versatile, effectively dewatering a wide range of fine particled slurries, in a number of diverse industries.

Today there are many different techniques of soil remediation used in Australia and throughout the world. This paper considers the thermal desorption remediation technique and, in particular, the application of high temperature filtration to the process. The thermal desorption technique involves the treatment of hydrocarbon (oil, petrol, etc) contaminated soil. The process involves heating the soil in a retort or kiln to drive off the volatile organic contaminants. The exit gas stream from the retort is subsequently passed through an after burner to thermally oxidise the hydrocarbons. This technique produces soil and combustion gas streams which are free of hydrocarbons. Due to the heating and agitation of the soil within the retort, soil particles become entrained in the hot gas stream. To avoid the blockage and fouling of the system's interim ductwork and the afterburner, high temperature filtration technology has been applied to remove these soil particulates without cooling the gas Stream.

This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.

In a typical open cast mining operation, investigation of how existing truck performance compares with the highest achievable truck performance is largely neglected. This paper addresses this issue by proposing a computerised system that will provide a systematic method for comparing existing truck operational performance to the highest performance considered achievable. Through analyses of existing versus achievable performances, various inefficiencies associated with truck operations can be identified. These inefficiencies could occur due to machine configurations, haul route design and conditions or operator skill level. Remedial action should then be taken in a timely fashion to better manage these factors and to ensure the fleet is always operating at its peak efficiency.

As South African gold mines go deeper, and improved and more uniform working condi- tions are required, ever larger amounts of refrigeration are needed. At the same time new and more suitable cooling equipment is becoming available for use with new mining layouts as well as on existing shaft systems. The advent of the large diameter rotor screw compressor has meant that there is now a machine available with great flexibility in performance and construction for efficient underground use. The first installation using this type of machine is described.

A substitute for rutile can be produced by leaching natural or pre-treated ilmenite in hydrochloric acid. Ilmenite in its natural form is an extraordinarily inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite so that it can be leached with dilute hydro- chloric acid (=2O% w/w) can be enhanced by pre-treatment steps of oxidation and re- duction. The temperatures at which oxidation and reduction are carried out have an effect on both the kinetics of these steps and the leaching kinetics and optimum temperatures for oxidation and reduction are 950 and 850¦C respectively. The mechanism of leaching of iron from pretreated ilmenite and the effects of rate of agitation, temperature, acid con- centration and addition of ferrous chloride to hydrochloric acid on leaching kinetics and production of fines are discussed in the paper.

The Ellalong Colliery has been the first to mine the Greta Seam using the longwall method. Analysis of data from geotechnical monitoring has pointed to the role of the strong, massive sandstones of the Branxton formation in the development of loads on the powered supports and pillars. Failure of the sandstone intermediate-roof has been related to first-weight and periodic weighting, measured on the supports, using simple "voussior" analysis. Stress changes, including triaxial components measured in the barrier and chain pillars, have been compared with 2- and 3- dimensional numerical models. The applicable range of the models for the prediction of pillar loads under the strong roof is discussed.

Nickel laterite approximately 40% of the remainder caning deposits. ores are the source of the world's nickel with from sulphide ore Although laterite ores are near the surface and cheap to mine they require significantly more energy to treat than sulphide ores. The escalation of oil prices comiencing in 1973 meant that nickel laterite refineries using oil as an energy source were placed at distinct disadvantage relative to sulphide refineries or those with coal derived energy. The Queensland Nickel refinery commenced a construction programme; in 1980 to allow ore drying and power generation to be converted from oil to coal. Since late 1981 ore drying has been undertaken using heated air from two moving grate spreader grate stokers. The changeover from oil to coal drying proceeded without process disruptions. This paper discusses the plant changes required to allow the receipt of coal and the operating performance obtained from the coal fired air heaters.

Goldsworthy Mining Limited is currently mining iron ore at an annual rate of 7 million tons from several small orebodies, each of which exhibit wide variations in iron, phosphorus, silica and alumina contents. Each orebody is mined at its average ore reserve grade and therefore mine planning and grade control techniques have had to be tailored to achieve a constant production blend.

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

The Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of ten steeply dipping seams with thicknesses varying between 0.1 and 3.5 m and split by shale, clay, silt and sandstone. The area contains four faults dipping about 75¦ with four to 85 m vertical displacements. The complex nature of the deposit coupled with limited 27 exploration drillholes at an average spacing of 200 m made it difficult to create a realistic geological model. A three-dimensional gridded seam model gave a fair representation of the deposit. Attempt to create an optimum pit using the WHITTLE 3D pit optimiser proved unsuccessful since the pit optimiser is restricted to standard regular or fixed blocks. The gridded seam model was converted to a fixed block model prior to the optimum pit design. Smoothing and pit base controlling were also introduced to obtain a smoother pit. A mining scenario produced 3.6 million tonnes of coal, 28.4 million bcm of waste and US$18.1 million revenue.

Present capacity for molten iron production at Port Kembla is an average of 13 000 t/day from five blast furnaces. The most recently installed blast furnace, No.5, was commissioned in March 1972 with a design capacity of 4 500 t/day. For the first reline currently scheduled for 1977, plans are being finalized.for significant modifications and uprating of capacity. Achievement of the initial design capacity from No.5 blast furnace on a sustained basis was not realised until the third year of operation. Although the furnace is only 42% larger than No.4 blast furnace on an inner volume basis, the more stringent raw materials, operation and maintenance requirements of the larger furnace and more complex equipment have been found to be much more critical than anticipated in the planning stages. These problems have also been experienced by many other companies who have recently installed large new blast furnaces. Some of the principal problem areas are described together with measures taken to over- come the difficulties. The Miocene Chichibu granitoids associated with the Chichibu skarn deposit are divided into North Body, South Body and Daikoku altered stock. Orebodies of the Chichibu skarn deposit are mainly distributed in the north-western part of the North Body and Daikoku altered stock. The North Body consists of magnetite-series granitoids ranging from tonalite to granodiorite and to monzogranite from the margins to the centre of the intrusion. The South Body consists of tonalite and granodiorite, and most of these rocks are also classified as magnetite-series granitoids. The Daikoku altered stock consists of a quartz diorite porphyry. The SiO2 contents of the granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body range from 61.6 to 70.7 wt per cent. During magmatic differentiation, Cu, As and Zn contents in fresh granitic rocks of the North Body and South Body increase with SiO2 content up to 63 wt per cent SiO2, and then progressively decrease with increasing SiO2 contents as SiO2 exceeds 65 wt per cent. Estimated pressure for the emplacement of the granitoids is about 0.5 kbars. Cathodoluminescence studies on quartz from those granitic rocks show that vapour rich two-phase fluid inclusions tend to occur in the core of quartz crystals, while halite-bearing poly-phase fluid inclusions occur in the margins of quartz crystals. The distribution of fluid inclusions suggests that fluid composition changed from low to high salinities during the growth of magmatic quartz crystals. Texture showing quartz crystals with an oval shape enclosed by radial aggregates of a mixture of fine-grained quartz, plagioclase and K-feldspar composing the groundmass of the monzogranite also suggests a pressure decrease during solidification of North Body. These findings show that high salinity fluids were present during magmatic differentiation and that Fe-Cu-Pb-Zn-Au-Ag skarn mineralisation of the Chichibu deposit was possibly associated with these high salinity fluids. The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

A zone of northwest trending dykes extends for over 600 km in the hinterland from Cairns to Mackay. In sate regions the zone is up to 120 km wide. Figure 1 shows their approximate extent, compiled from published regional maps and from specific studies in more limited areas : Palm Islands, Cardwell Ranges, Jourama Falls, Townsville area and Burdekin Delta. The context of the dyke swarm is the Tasman Orogenic Zone, the region of Eastern Australia conprised of Palaeozoic metamorphic, sedimentary, volcanic and plutonic rocks which has experienced a complex history and evolution. In the Whitsunday region, the Tam-an Zone also involves Cretaceous volcanism and plutonism. Geological relationships indicated a wide span of ages for the intrusions in the dyke, swarm zone. They intrude a range of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, and in some areas plutonic rocks. Older dykes, apparently part of the same regional swarm are intruded by sate of the granites.

Suppliers of products and services have a pivotal role in sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. Reputable suppliers know their products and services, and the industry, and have unique knowledge of these in relation to their customerÆs needs. Petroleum hydrocarbon suppliers, in particular, impact upon a mineÆs sustainability because of the extensive reach of petroleum hydrocarbons into the mining and minerals life-cycle. The petroleum hydrocarbon life-cycle is a useful framework to enable engagement between supplier and customer on the issue of sustainability. The life-cycle starts with supply of fuels, lubricants and services at the mine, through to plant operation and maintenance, transport of mined products, ship loading, and finally through to mineral processing and other downstream value-adding. There are barriers to leveraging supplierÆs capabilities which have to be overcome before the industry will gain the potential benefits from such supplier engagement.

The Northland Peninsula of northern North Island, New Zealand contains a complex and diverse record of volcanism which reflects rapid tectonic changes during the late Cenozoic. The main volcanic associations observed on the peninsula are late Cretaceous- early oceanic crust obducted onto Northland at the end of the Oligocene, Miocene arc-type rocks and Pliocene-Quaternary intraplate basalts. This sucession of volcanic successions can be related to tectonic convergence developing into subduction and followed by a an environment of tectonic tension. While the volcanic activity is ultimately linked to specific tectonic regimes, because of rapid change magmatism was decoupled from the specific tectonic event. This decoupling of magmatism and tectonism appears to be a feature of the zones of plate interaction in the southwest Pacific region.

As near-surface underground mines progress deeper, the inevitable question is whether to convert from truck haulage to shaft hoisting. The desire to defer capital expenditure frequently delays investigation of the shaft option, or deferral of a decision to start shaft sinking, unless the shaft option is clearly significantly better than trucking. By the time increasing depth makes trucking uneconomic, there may then be insufficient resource remaining to justify a shaft, and the mine must close. However, had the shaft been built earlier, its lower operating costs would have permitted the mine to continue to greater depths. This paper presents a methodology for investigating the shaft versus trucks decision. As well as the typical analysis of which option is preferable at the time the analysis is conducted, the process presented illustrates how the timing of the decision to sink a shaft is critical. The paper shows how to identify the latest date at which the decision to sink a shaft can be made, after which time the shaft option will not be economic. It also illustrates how to assess the resource that may be required to justify the shaft. Considering this in conjunction with the latest decision date, implications for the companyÆs exploration program are discussed.

Following the delineation of significant extra ore reserves during 1990, the decision was made to expand production from 350,000 tonnes of run of mine ore per year to initially 600,000 tonnes increasing to 750,000 tonnes per year. The existing plant consists of a conventional three stage crushing plant followed by a heavy medium separation plant that produces a product prior to grinding. Grinding is conducted in three stages of ball mill in series. Alternatives examined for expanding production included: aò SAG mill - ball mill circuit replacing the secondary and tertiary stages of crushing, the heavy medium plant and the existing ball mills; and, upgrading of the existing circuit configuration.
