Through the years much interest has been centered in attempting to develop a direct method of iron-ore reduction, to replace or supplement the present indirect blast-furnace process. It would not be difficult to produce a list of more than 500 patents dealing with the direct production of iron and steel, but the few of this type of process that have proved successful do not produce in competition with the blast furnace; they produce special products. A survey of the literature reveals that the equilibrium conditions for the reduction reactions (iron oxides with carbon monoxide and with hydrogen) have been fairly well established but that data on the rate of reaction are discordant, although the genera1 effects of the variables are known. This dissertation deals with the rate of reduction of a magnetite concentrate with hydrogen. The following variables have been studied: bed depth, gas velocity, particle size and temperature. The behavior of a single particle was also studied. Literature Two general factors should be considered in a study of reduction of iron oxide: (I) equilibrium relations, and (2) rate of reaction. The first factor, equilibrium, has received the attention of many investigators and the equilibria Fe304-FeO-H2-H2O, Fe3O4-FeO-CO-CO2, FeO-Fe-H2-H2O, FeO-Fe-CO-CO2 are fairly well established. Of the second factor, the rate of reaction, much less is known. Data are comparatively scarce and there is very little concordance. The discordance probably results from the large number of variables influencing the reactions. However, the general effect of the variables is known. Among these variables are temperature, gas velocity, particle size, porosity, gas composition (distance from equilibrium), presence of impurities, greater or less prevalence of side reactions, and even design of the apparatus itself. Wetherill and Furnasl published an excellent paper in 1934. They point out that any one or more of five processes (the chemical reaction, diffusion of the reactant through the gas film, diffusion of the reactant through the solid phase, diffusion of the reaction product through the solid phase, or diffusion of the reaction product through the gas film) may be the slow process, and thus the rate-controlling process. It is regretted that the work of these authors was limited to experiments at One temperature, and that the range of gas compositions was limited. Langmuir2 has shown that heterogeneous reactions take place at phase boundaries.

Although gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein 'matter :in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low—that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths. It is in these islands of older rocks and in the narrow marginal belts and cupolas of the batholiths that practically all of the gold lode deposits of the shields are found. Valuable lodes are lacking generally in the granites themselves except in grahite within a mile or less from .the contacts with rocks of the islands (Fig. 1). It is probable that the great areas of granites and gneisses that surround the islands are not all of the same age, and that at places unmapped granite intrudes gneiss or older

This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydro-cyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It is hoped that the development of the present data will assist in the further elucidation of existing qualitative models, and also in an enhanced application of the hydrocyclone and provide a base for further research. Discussed are the mechanisms of gravity separation in hydro-cyclones, test procedures, experimental observations, and industrial applications from these studies. Within the general area of unit operations, a considerable effort has been expended in theoretical and empirical research associated with cyclone operations. The motivation involves the industrial requirement for devices and techniques to manipulate small particles at low operating costs, a situation required in coal preparation. There are good reasons why the cyclone helps to satisfy this demand, because it combines operational simplicity (no moving parts) with versatility and high throughput capacity per unit area. The cyclone is one of the most widely applied tools in the process technologies. There are areas for potential cyclone application which have been only meagerly explored or not considered at all. This discussion is restricted to a very specific application of the cyclone - its use as a hydrocyclone in the cleaning of fine coal. It represents an initial presentation of a more comprehensive report. Coal preparation can appropriately claim the hydrocyclone since most of its predominant industrial uses have originated in this area and have spread into other applications, including the broad field of ore dressing, the petroleum industry, chemical processing, nuclear engineering and food technology. There is one operational principle common in all cyclones: A fluid is tangentially introduced into a cylindrical or conical container under pressure. A predominantly irrotational flow field1 is established within the cyclone (Fig. 1). The uniqueness of this flow is indicated by the variation in tangential velocity across the cyclone radius, which reaches a maximum a short distance from the center and decays toward the cyclone wall. In contrast, the tangential velocity in a centrifuge increases uniformly toward the wall. Usually two products are discharged from the cyclone. They differ in that one discharge consists predominantly of that portion of the feed fluid which moves along the wall axially away from the feed inlet, while the other consists predominantly of fluid spiralling along the central regions of the cyclone, in an axial direction opposite to that of the wall current. Fig. 2 indicates these discharge points schematically. The latter product may be termed the vortex-product, since it is discharged with the central vortex-current. In the case of conical cyclones, the former product may be referred to as the apex-product. Although the names "over- and underflow" are widely used, many cyclones are operated from extreme angular positions thus the proposed terms are less ambiguous. The cyclone feed fluid can be laden with solid particles or nonmiscible fluid drops. Such a feed component is discharged from the cyclone, after some residence time, into the one or the other product. Yet, the orifice through which a particle will leave the cyclone is dependent upon a number of factors. These factors, in a statistical sense, determine the path of the particle within the cyclone. Thus, different separation phenomena are possible and different process results attainable by the controllable variation of the particle path. It is then, to attain a fuller understanding of this particle path, to which this study is ultimately directed. It is anticipated that the detailed study of the data being developed will allow further elucidation of existing qualitative models. However, the development of a quantitative description of cyclone operation in terms of a mechanism is not currently feasible. The flow conditions in a cyclone are not fully understood even for a pure fluid, without the added complexity of the inclusion of multiple size-density particles. It is hoped that the development of the present data will also assist in an enhanced application of the hydro-cyclone and provide a base for further research. " The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more and more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur."* These words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits, or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by him within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Hartz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. In my first thorough and systematic examination of an important group of ore-deposits, viz., that of Leadville, Colorado, I was enabled, through the generous facilities afforded me by the then Director of the Geological Survey, Mr. Clarence King, to make a most elaborate and detailed study of the geology, not only of the immediate vicinity of the mines, but of the adjacent mountain regions, based upon accurate topographical and underground maps, and

THE Kingsport formation, a part of the Knox dolomite of Ordovician age, is composed of 538 ft of dolomite and limestone. Numerous bands, layers and nodules of chert, arenaceous and shale zones are present. The characteristics displayed by these features have been useful in mapping, prospecting and mining. Perhaps a better understanding of the origin of these zones will increase their usefulness.

Since both rotary and jet piercing drills are used by the Iron Ore Co. at Smallwood, it is often desirable in planning to know in which regions of the orebody or new orebodies a particular drill will be the most economic. This makes it necessary to establish a correlation between drillability and pierceability and some physical rock properties. For rotary drills a good correlation was found with penetration rate and grinding factor index. The jet piercers were found to have a reciprocal relationship in the sense that the best rotary ground was the worst jet ground and vice versa. It is also indicated how an economic comparison could be made using these penetration rate versus grinding factor index curves, the hole size distribution curves for single pass and chambered holes and the mine distribution curve for grinding factor index. A discussion is presented on the fuel oxygen ratios to be used in jet piercing and on the site gas sampling and analysis which has been used to set up the drills. The fuel has been cut back so that stoichio-metric conditions exist, carbon monoxide is drastically reduced and pop-up or exploding holes eliminated. No decrease in penetration rate has been observed contrary to the published results of previous workers. The blasting procedure and results at Smallwood are discussed and the operation of Iron Ore Co.'s slurry pump-mix truck is also described briefly. Smallwood mine is part of the Iron Ore Co.'s Carol Lake operation and is situated in Labrador, 240 miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec. Last year 15 million tons of crude ore were crushed to yield 6.3 million tons of concentrate and pellets. This year the figures will be 17 million tons of crude and 7% million tons of concentrate and pellets which is the full plant capacity. Carol Lake ores consist primarily of specularite and magnetite mixed with quartz. For convenience the ore has been split-into the following classifications depending on the percentage of magnetics in the sample, shown in brackets: specularite (0 to 10%), specularite-magnetite (10 to 20%), magnetite- specularite (20 to 30%), magnetite (>30%). The order of classification also represents the order of increasing grinding difficulty - the specularite generally being the easiest and the magnetite the hardest. The orebody also contains a small percentage of waste materials consisting of limonite carbonate, quartz carbonate and quartz magnetite. The first two materials are among the softest in the mine, generally softer than the specularite, and the quartz magnetite is amongst the hardest. The bulk of the material in the mine is of the specularite-magnetite and magnetite-specularite classifications. As a result of test drilling at Smallwood in 1960 with rotary, jet and percussion drills, the Iron Ore Co. purchased four JPM-4 jet piercers for the bulk of production drilling and set up an oxygen plant to supply 20 tons of oxygen per day. This oxygen is sufficient for two machines operating full time and one part time. In addition, there are two 50-R, one 60-R and one 40-R machines in use. The benches are 45 ft high and 50 ft holes are generally drilled. JET DRILLING At the onset of jet drilling in the late fall of 1962, two major problems were encountered: 1) freezing due to winter operations; experience and the use of heat at more places, such as the rotary head, has eliminated this,'" and 2) exploding or "popping" drilled holes; this happened frequently (several holes "popping" each day) and was the cause of two lost time accidents. In one instance a hole was being measured with a tape which fell down the hole causing it to "pop." Safety glasses though pulverized saved the wearer's eyesight. Various methods were then employed to detonate the holes before measuring or loading (dropping lighted rags of fusees down, or sparking across a spark gap). These methods were time consuming and far from completely successful. Consideration was given to the fuel oxygen ratio on the machines and what this would produce in the way of product gases. A fuel oxygen weight ratio of 0.35 which was quite oxygen negative was being used. Theoretically appreciable carbon monoxide would be produced at this fuel oxygen ratio. On the close down procedure of the jet which calls for low oxygen after flame out, oxygen would be left in the hole along with this carbon monoxide. This is an explosive mixture. FLOTATION of ores is a practical utilization of the energy that resides in the surfaces of solids and liquids. The best known manifestation of this energy is called surface tension; an equally important, though less apparent, phenomenon is adsorption. This paper reviews some of the recent investigations of these phenomena, and gives the results of certain experiments performed by the authors. Surface tension is a manifestation of energy having its seat at the bounding surface between the adjacent phases of a multiphase system. Thus, at the interface between a liquid and a gas, or between two immiscible liquids, or between a solid and a gas or a liquid, there are forces capable of doing work, their magnitude depending on the nature of the adjacent phases and the extent of the bounding area. These surface forces are inappreciable when the ratio of surface to volume of the adjacent phases is small, but they become powerful when this ratio becomes large, as it does when one of the phases is highly dispersed. Froth flotation, which consists in buoying solids heavier than water to the surface of water by means of gas bubbles, utilizes the force of surface tension to attach the solid particles to the gas bubbles and again to maintain the floating mass of bubbles as a more or less persistent froth at the surface of a pulp for a sufficiently long time to allow its removal. It follows from the second law of thermodynamics that the potential energy of a system in equilibrium is a minimum. Therefore a multiphase system, tending toward equilibrium, will arrange itself in such a way that the total energy of the interfaces will be the least possible. In Polk County, Florida, the mining of raw phosphates began some 50 years ago with dredging operations on the Peace River, and in other near-by places by removal of shallow overburden with negroes and wheelbarrows, or with mules and scrapers, and the excavation and screening of deposits found close to the surface. There were many individual operations of comparatively short life. Later steam shovels removed the overburden, and still later hydraulic methods were substituted for the steam shovel. Within the last 10 years large electrically operated draglines have almost entirely replaced hydraulic mining for overburden removal. The matrix is still mined by hydraulic giants and pumped to the washer or recovery plant. The many small operations have long since disappeared and the most desirable phosphate lands have gradually been acquired through purchase or merger by the seven companies that are operating in the field today. These companies are producing and selling about 2,000,000 long tons of phosphate per annum, or about two-thirds of what the industry likes to think is the normal output, with 1929 and 1930 in mind. To produce these 2,000,000 long tons of raw phosphate, they mine and treat about 1,000,000 tons of tailings from older and less efficient operations, about 11,000,000 tons of matrix, and remove from above this matrix some 22,000,000 tons of overburden. The mining practice that has made possible the excavation and handling of 34 million tons of material to win but 2 million tons of merchantable product, selling for probably an average of only $4 per long ton when dried, should be of interest to the mining profession, though little has been written of it. The Florida Pebble Field, as it has come to be known, comprises an area (Fig. 1) within a radius of about 18 to 20 miles centering around Mulberry in Polk County, a small town 30 miles east of Tampa, Florida's largest port on the Gulf coast. The geology1 of these phosphate pebble deposits may be described briefly. A fairly pure limestone was altered to a secondary apatite.

IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

It may be anticipated that these newer collectors will be used mainly with nonsulphide minerals, for which the xan-thates and similar compounds are of little value. On the other hand, the xanthates are both cheap and effective for sulphide ores and seem likely to retain their present cminence in this field. During 1938 and 1939 two of us (E. E. W. and I. W. W.) commenced a comprehensive investigation of the principles underlying the use of paraffin chain salts as flotation reagents. This research was sponsored jointly by the University of Melbourne and a group of Australian mining companies. † A broad, semiquantitative survey was then made of the field covered in the present paper. This was followed in 1940 by further work by one of us (K. L. S.). In 1941 the investigation was taken over by the Division of Industrial Chemistry of the Commonwealth Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia. Discovery of some principles upon which are based the flotation of minerals by paraffin chain salts was followed by their application in the development of processes for the recovery of certain strategic minerals from their ores. Promising results in the flotation of cassiterite from various ores will be described in a subsequent paper. The Paraffin Chain Salts 'he basic requirements for a "collector " in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polar-nonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2)nX where .X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). Many compounds of similar constitution are available, but the usual polar groups are: -Co2Na, -So3Na, -So4Na, — PO4Na2, or an aminonitrogen group, the

The Paraffin Chain Salts 'he basic requirements for a "collector " in flotation are that it should form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated, and that this film should be orientated so that hydrocarbon (nonpolar) groups form the effective surface. When modified in this way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince23 that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to attract it to the mineral surface as well as the nonpolar group. One section of this large class of polar-nonpolar compounds is the paraffin chain salts: CH3(CH2)nX where .X signifies a polar group that ionizes in aqueous solution. Though the compound can ionize, it may be a weak or a strong electrolyte, and the hydrocarbon chain may be in the cation or the anion (Table I). The diffusion rate of hydrogen in liquid iron has been measured by a gas-liquid metal diffusion cell technique. The diffusion cell was formed by immersing an alumina tube containing hydrogen gas at 1 atm in a bath of stagnant liquid iron. The change in the composition of the melt in the cell was determined by measuring the rate of absorption of the gas in the cell. The appropriate solution to Fick's second law was used to examine the data and calculate diffusivi-ties. The absorption of hydrogen in stagnant pure liquid iron has been found to be diffusion-controlled. The results show that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, of hydrogen in pure iron in the range of 1547" to 1726°C can be represented by the following Arrhenius relation: D(sq cnz per sec) = 3.2 x X exp(- 3300 i 1800/RT) where the uncertainty in the activation energy corresponds to the YO pct confidence level. Oxygen in the melt (above 0.015 pct 2) increased the apparent rate of absorption of hydrogen. The importance of diffusion data on liquid metals for predicting the rates of certain metallurgical processes has been recognized for a long time. Moreover, these data are much needed to test and develop theory for diffusion in liquid metals. Despite this practical and theoretical interest, however, relatively little reliable information about diffusion in liquid metals is available in the literature. This is particularly true for gas components such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in liquid metals, where almost no data on chemical diffusion coefficients are to be found. This is probably due to a multitude of experimental difficulties particularly associated with high-temperature melts. In an effort to fill this gap in information, a research program was undertaken to study the diffusivities and rates of solution of gases in liquid metals. This paper presents the results of a study of the diffusion of hydrogen in liquid iron. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two methods for the study of the kinetics of dissolution of gases in liquid metals are being employed in this laboratory. Both involve the measurement of the volume of gas absorbed by the melt as a function of time and as such both avoid the uncertainties involved in chemical analyses of quenched samples for relatively small amounts of gas. In the first method, the gas dissolves in an inductively stirred melt and, in the absence of a slow surface reaction, the results are often interpreted in terms of mass transport across a liquid "boundary layer" between the homogeneous gas phase and well-stirred part of the melt. Other interpretations of the results of such experiments have also been described in the literature.1'5 In the second method a gas-liquid metal diffusion cell is used.' The gas dissolves in a cylindrical column of stagnant liquid metal and, in the absence of a slow surface reaction, the results are interpreted in terms of a non-steady-state diffusion solution to Fick's second law. The weakness of the first method is that while it gives information on the mechanism of absorption by stirred melts it yields an overall rate constant which even in the simplest cases depends on the nature and the thickness of the "mass transport layer" or "boundary layer". It yields no values of diffusion coefficients. The second method was used in this research because in many cases it is possible to determine the diffusion coefficient of the gas component in the liquid metal. In this research it has been utilized to measure diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in liquid iron. The apparatus used was essentially the same as that described by Mizikar, Grace, and par lee but certain modifications have been introduced to meet the elevated temperatures and special conditions of this research. Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus and Table I gives the identification of various parts in this figure. The diffusion cell, shown in detail in Fig. 2, was formed by immersing an impervious alumina tube (hereafter called absorption tube) in a bath of pure liquid iron contained in an alumina crucible. Two types of tubes were used, Morganite triangle RR and McDanel AP35. The crucible was contained in a vertical impervious alumina combustion tube (32 mm ID by 914 mm long) which was closed at both ends by water-cooled brass heads employing O-ring compression seals, Fig. 1. INTEREST in developing White Pine, considered since 1942, was renewed by the Korean conflict and its shortage of domestic sources of copper. In view of this Morris F. La Croix, president of Copper Range Co. of Boston, and of its wholly owned subsidiary, White Pine Copper Co., worked an agreement out with Government officials. Essentially the contract called for a construction loan of $57,185,000 at 5 pct interest, with $13 million additional supplied by Copper Range. Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted for 243,750 tons of copper from the first 275,000 tons produced, at a base price of 25.5& per lb, the contract to expire Dec. 31, 1961.

THE magnetic powder method, long used. for roughly mapping mag-netic fields, has recently been refined 1,2 for investigating the microscopic variations in the surface magnetization of ferromagnetic crystals. Bitter2 first discovered regular powder patterns connected with the crystal structure of such specimens. Several other investigators3 have used Bitter's original technique, with slight modifications, to study the varia-tion of the patterns with variations in the magnetizing field applied parallel to the surface, and their dependence upon the state of strain, of polish and of crystal cut. All of the explanations of these patterns on metallic ferromagnetics have been couched in general terms. In a preliminary report we have described an improvement in the powder technique which led us to the discovery of a new effect throwing con-siderable light on the magnetic secondary structure of alpha iron4 and of nickels single crystals. We now report additional evidence confirming the existence and stability of a magnetic block secondary structure.

INTRODUCTION Before an understandable discussion concerning coal-dewatering processes can be initiated, it is necessary to define some terms of usage. The many different meanings and interpretations of terms preclude development of standard definitions so that the terms which are defined in this chapter should be regarded mainly as working terms intended to facilitate communication. A coal slurry ' might be defined as a watery suspension carrying particles of fine coal and other assorted material ranging upward in size from the finest clay particles. Some particles may be in the colloidal sue range and exhibit characteristics of suspended colloids. The dilution of the system generally is such that it is in a condition of independent particle subsidence. In some coal mining areas a slurry is regarded as a suspension of fine coal and other materials having a dilution that cannot be economically dewatered by filtration. A coal slime may be regarded as a slurry containing particles of such size range that 50 per cent or more (by weight) will pass a 200-mesh sieve. Slime suspensions generally are difficult to handle without special treatment in conventional sedimentation equipment. A coal sludge is defined as a slurry that has been partly dewatered by sedimentation usually to a thick or viscous consistency where further dewatering can be most readily facilitated by filtration. Culm and silt are terms characteristic of coal-preparation practice which should be defined. In anthracite terminology, culm is the generally coarse residue or waste accumulation of coal, bone and rock from preparation plants most of which are no longer functional. Culm has a wide range of sizes, some rather coarse, and except to differentiate it from silt, the term is of limited interest in this discussion. In anthracite terminology, silt is the accumulation of waste fine coal, bone and slate settled out from preparation plant water in excavated basins. Silt is generally made up of particles ranging in size from 3/32-in. round-opening screen to the very finest sues. Silt is also referred to at times as sludge, fines, slush, and mud and is the partly dewatered derivative of what has been previously defined as slurry. In the terminology of the bituminous coal producing areas, the word culm commonly corresponds to slurry or slime, depending upon the size distribution of the suspended solids.
