qualitative picture has been developed to describe the oxidation behavior of TaSi2-coated tantalum and CbSi2-coated columbium. These systems have a significantly lower inherent oxidation resistance than MoSi2-coated molybdenum does. This stems primarily from the fact that Ta2O5 and Cb2O5 are nearly as stable thermodynamically as SiO2, whereas MoO2 or Moos are not. Further, diffusion of silicon in the Ta- and Cb-Si system is considerably slower than in the Mo-Si system. These ,factors prohibit the mechanism of selective oxidation of- silicon which accounts for the oxidation resistance 01- MoSi2-coated molybdenum. The silicide can be stabilized by adding suitable Modifiers which increase the thermodynamic stability of the silicate formed during oxidation. Modifiers, such as aluminum, can be inroduced into solid solution in the coating. in controlled amounts through proper selection of the source in the pack cementation process of coating fov~rzatiorz. Addition of aluminum to TaSi2, coatings on tantalum was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation resistance. EXTENSIVE experimental work and analysis have established the nature of the oxidation behavior exhibited by MoSi2- and MoSi2 -coated molybdenum-base alloys, and defined the conditions for maximum protection against oxidation of the substrate.'-* The oxidation resistance of MoSi2 in the temperature-pressure range of 1100°C-PO2 > 10-5 atm to 1900°C— PO2 > 10-1 atm is due to the formation at the surface of a continuous film of SiO2 which results from selective oxidation of silicon. Under the prevailing kinetic conditions, this film is stable toward the molybdenum silicide with which it comes in contact. Initially molybdenum oxidizes also, but it forms volatile species. SiO2, however, nucleates and grows as a condensed phase. Once a continuous film of SiO2 has formed, the oxidation rate falls to that observed for the oxidation of pure silicon indicative of diffusion through the oxide film as the rate-controlling mechanism. This oxidation behavior is of course highly dependent upon temperature and oxygen pressure. Bartlett and Gage13 and Bartlett, McCamont, and Gagelb define precisely this dependence in terms of the oxygen partial pressures and silicon diffusivities required to support a stable SiO2 film. At low temperatures (near 500°C—the "pest" region) silicon diffuses too slowly to be selectively oxidized. Hence, molybdenum and silicon oxidize readily in proportion to their stoi- chiometry. At high temperatures and low pressure, SiOz dissociates to form volatile SiO(g), and a protective film cannot be maintained. Application of the MoSiz/Mo system is limited to temperatures below 1900oC, the eutectic between MoSi, and MO5Si3.5 The oxidation behavior of MoSi2-coated molybdenum is essentially the same as that outlined above with the exception that the MoSi2 is not in equilibrium with the molybdenum substrate. At the temperatures under consideration silicon will diffuse rapidly into the molybdenum eventually converting the coating to MosSi3.4 The rate constant for subsequent decomposition of Mo5Si3 into Mo3Si plus silicon, and/or the diffusivity of silicon through Mo3Si then becomes low enough to allow active oxidation of both molybdenum and silicon with subsequent degradation of the specimen. A stable silica film can be formed but at temperatures and/or oxygen partial pressures higher than those required with MoSi2 present as a source of si1icon.l, 4 Because of the similarity between the silicides of molybdenum and those of columbium and tantalum one would expect similar oxidation behavior for coatings in the respective systems. This is not entirely the case, however, as shown by the experimental results reported herein. Regarding tantalum and columbium disilicide coatings on tantalum and columbium substrates, respectively, the oxygen arriving at the surface of the coating partitions itself nearly equally between the metal and the silicon, and a two-phase oxide layer (Me2O5 plus SiO2) is always formed. The diffusion of silicon in the tantalum and columbium silicides is relatively slow, compared to that in the molybdenum silicides, which further enhances this equipartitioning of oxygen. Thickening of the coating during service by inward diffusion of silicon into the substrate is correspondingly slow, and the effective thickness of the coating at the roots of cracks and defects is only slightly changed providing high probability for premature coating failure. Furthermore, the SiO2 glass that is generated is not thermodynamically stable with respect to the coating. The metal silicide tends to reduce the SiO2 liberating either free silicon or SiO. The situation can be improved by suitably modifying the coating such that the stability of the protective glass which is generated during service is increased. Thus, selective oxidation of silicon and the modifying agent will occur, and the silicide coating will not tend to reduce the oxide layer. Modifying agents can be introduced into the coating by the pack cementation process. Using sources containing the modifier at controlled chemical potentials allows control of the coating composition. Partially substituting aluminum for silicon in TaSi2 coatings by forming a Ta(Si,Al)2 solid solution was effective in moderately increasing the oxidation protection.

The importance of condensing the gases which escape from furnaces so as to save both the fine particles of ore carried off mechanically and those which are volatilized, has for a long time occupied the serious attention of metallurgists in all parts of the world. It was my good fortune during the last summer to visit the lead and silver works at Ems, near Coblentz on the Rhine, and through the politeness of Mr. Freudenberg, general director of the works, to study in detail their methods of condensation, and to receive from him the important results which have been obtained through a series of experiments lasting over a number of years. I have thought, that these results would be of great interest to the members of the Institute and to other metallurgists in the United States, and I have, therefore, with the assistance of Mr. Freudenberg, prepared a careful, detailed description of the construction of the flues, as well as an account of the various experiments which have been made with them, and the conclusions arrived at as the result of these experiments. It may be said, in general, that the reason why so little attention has been paid in the metallurgical works of the United States to the collection of flue-dust, is that we are not generally aware of the large amount of material carried off by the gases. This is owing partly to the fact that little or no attention is paid to the subject, and also to the fact that the assays, which are almost invariably made in the dry way, show a result so much below the real contents

Lime, the "versatile chemical," is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or calcia, or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to much confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is usually made from high-calcium or high-magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high-calcium limes contain less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high-magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 A.D. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from a scientific perspective. The production of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 15 to 20 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the lime/limestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting in a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [CaCO3 (limestone) + heat (1000° to 1300°C)= 100 CaO (quicklime) + CO2 T 5644 or CaCO3 • MgCO3 (limestone) 10084 + heat (900°C to 1200°C) CaO • MgO (quicklime) + 2CO2 T 56 4088] While there is nearly universal agreement about the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in Fig. 1. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO2 pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the reaction interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Therefore, because calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in

The ores of the Butte district present a variety of combinations, and their treatment by concentration is an interesting study. They may be classified in general as follows: 1. Copper-silver ores, which are produced by the mines of the Anaconda group, and by the Mountain View, Colusa, Silver Bow and Parrot. The high-grade ores from these properties are roasted and then smelted; but a large proportion of the output is low-grade and siliceous, and hence requires concentration. The copper-bearing minerals are chalcocite, bornite, enargite and chalcopyrite, in varying proportions in the different mines, the gangue, which breaks readily into grains, being quartz and feldspar. 2. Silver-copper ores, of which the Gagnon vein is the largest producer. The grade of the ores from this mine is such that nine-tenths of the output requires concentration. The silver- and copper-bearing minerals of this vein are massive wurtzite, sphalerite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, tetrahedrite, enargite, tennantite and galenite, with a quartz gangue associated with feldspar and small quantities of barite and fluorite. The gangue is very hard and not at all granular. 3. Silver-ores containing a small amount of gold, embracing the product of the Alice, Magna Charta and Moulton claims, on what is known as the Rainbow lode, and that of the Lexington, Blue Bird, Nettie, Burlington and other mines. The gangue is quartz, carrying pyrite, sphalerite, galenite, tetrahedrite and argentite, with manganese in the form of rhodochrosite and rhodonite. Good results on ores of this class cannot be obtained by concentration, because large percentages of the silver-bearing minerals are disseminated through the gangue in such minute grains that even the finest practicable crushing

The purpose of this paper is to present data that have been obtained during the past two years concerning the effects of prior cold-work and temperature and time of anneal upon the recrystallization and grain growth of 70-30 cartridge brass. It was desirable to study certain of these phases so that an accurate picture of the principles of the subject could be shown. The work is not intended to provide explicit annealing data, but to provide material examples that may help to clarify analogous problems concerning this alloy. Specifications often set limitations upon the grain size of annealed materials because of the importance of grain size upon subsequent manufacturing operations. It was, therefore, worth while to study the variables that affect the recrystallized grain size of this material. C. H. Mathewson and A. Phillips,l W. R, Webster,2 and others have presented annealing characteristic curves of this alloy. A recent typical curve presented by R. S. Pratt3 is shown in Fig. I. The tensile properties and grain sizes are shown as functions of the annealing temperature. Such curves serve as a useful guide in determining the physical properties of annealed material, but as they are made generally under carefully controlled laboratory conditions they do not indicate the performance of metal annealed in a mill muffle, where such conditions as amounts of metal, heating time and temperature may differ. Study of the effect of time and temperature upon grain growth and subscquent recrystallization was made with a coil of metal having the following analysis: 70.04 per cent copper; 0.007 lead; 0.007 iron; 0.00 tin; 0.00 silicon; 0.001 nickel; 0.000 phosphorus; balance zinc. The sample coil was obtained from metal that had been rerolled from hot-rolled mill stock, and was received at 0.228-in. gauge, soft, with a grain size of 0.125 mm. This material was then rolled 43.5 per cent to 0.129-in. gauge and annealed to a 0.053-mm. grain size. In this condition, samples were cut and used in all of the experimental work reported in this paper. Time The first study was of crystal growth at a constant temperature over a moderate length of time. Material was cut from the stock coil at 0.129-in. size and rolled 75 per , cent hard to 0.032-in. gauge. From this piece small samples were cut M by 2 in., suitable for grain-size determina.tions. Twelve samples were placed in an electric furnace uniformly across the width, approximately an inch from the floor. A thermocouple was wired to the center sample, so that the approximate metal temperature could be followed. At various

The recovery of uranium from acid leach slurries by continuous ion exchange, or solvent extraction using sieve-plate pulse columns, is compared. Differences in processing costs are of prime concern and can be related to differences in the unit operations of the two methods, as well as the chemical and physical properties of the slurry. Parameters are defined for the operation of the solvent-in-pulp process and the design of the continuous ion exchange column. Pilot plant operating experience with both recovery systems is described, and an overall assessment of the relative costs is presented.

ADAPTATION to mining needs of the rich store of geologic knowledge concerning mineral deposits and the application of principles of the science to specific problems in the finding, development and stoping of particular ore bodies are the major tasks of the mining geologist. On him to an increasing degree is placed responsibility for estimation of ore and appraisal of mineralized ground, for explicit guidance of exploration and development, and for reliable advice with regard to the many geologic conditions that influence mining operations. In the long continued and steady efforts to meet these requirements, a special skill in close observation, recording, and quantitative interpretation has been developed, particularly by geologists on staffs of mining companies, which in many districts has proved to be effective, not only for technical ends, but also for advancement of scientific understanding. The foundations for mining geologic work were laid in most districts of the West by investigations of the United States Geological Survey. For years they have provided a reliable basis for geologic thought with regard to ore deposits, and later studies have enriched and supplemented rather than superseded them. In very few districts have the geologic relations stated in the earlier papers needed serious modification or revision, in spite of new evidence subsequently made available in abundance by mining exposures. Indeed, one of the chief satisfactions derived from success in mining geologic work is the assurance that it gives of the correctness bf the major concepts of the science of ore formation, established to so large an extent by the leaders of this notable group among whom Lindgren has been so eminent a figure. The geologists of the Survey have given and are continuing to give the service which can properly be expected of the Federal government. Their work, however, though of the greatest value in establishing the broad geological setting,

THIS paper will attempt to show how a metallurgical problem at one California quicksilver mine was solved, and how the solution was applied successfully at another mine. The pronouns "we" and "our," as used below, refer to the Bradley Mining Co. of San Francisco. The term "concurrent firing" for the purpose of this paper can be defined as feeding and firing a rotary kiln at the same end-that is, of course, the upper end. This is as opposed to "counter-current firing," the orthodox method, in which a kiln is fed at the upper and fired at the lower end. The terms "quicksilver" and "mercury" are used interchangeably. EARLY REFERENCES The earliest work on nonferrous metallurgy, we believe, was The Pirotechnia of Vannocio Biringuccio,1 its first edition having been printed in Italy in 1540. Quoting from its chapter entitled "Concerning Quicksilver and Its Ore": Quicksilver . . . is one of the gods and has divine strength in itself, and also, to the annoyance of the alchemists, it is winged. Hence, when it sees that it is in gravest danger, it loosens itself from . . . every bond . . . and flies away into the heavens, escaping from the hands of those who crucify it. Almost laughing, it leaves all its adversaries mocked and scorned, with their phials and filters empty . . . How thorough a job, under certain conditions, it can do of mocking its adversaries and leaving their phials and filters empty, was found out four centuries later at the Sulphur Bank mine, on the east shore of Clear Lake, in Lake County, California. The other mine mentioned in the title is the Reed, in Yolo County, California, 35 miles by road southeast of Sulphur Bank. Reed and Sulphur Bank ranked respectively fifth and seventh in U. S. production in 1943. The earliest direct reference we can find to furnacing troubles at these mines was by Thomas Egleston in 1890.2 Speaking of Sulphur Bank, Egleston says: Sometimes there is more sulphur than cinnabar in the ore, which is a detriment to both . . . making the sulphur impure, and rendering the cinnabar difficult to work on account of the soot. In some of the early . . . furnaces the accumulation of soot from the excess of sulphur has been known to penetrate as far as the fan blower at the end of the . . . condensers, and completely prevent its revolution. In order to get rid of the inconvenience of this accumulation . . . , as well as to get a commercial value from the sulphur, it (the sulphur) is now separated by steam and sold. It is claimed that the sulphur alone pays all the expenses of . . . the mine. The mine was first worked for sulphur, and the cinnabar it contained was considered to be an inconvenience, and was carefully picked out and thrown away. as its richness and value were not

Last year's review was characterized as a year of politics and began an era of legislation. The 1972 review can be similarly characterized, with even more rigid health and safety regulations and environmental legislation. The mining industry should be aware of what's happening in the nuclear power and other fields as a result of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, where the environmental impact of most major construction activities are already under close scrutiny. Section 102 of NEPA requires that all federal agencies include a detailed statement on specified environmental conditions as part of every report on proposed actions significantly affecting the quality of the human environment. All such environmental reports must consider the same general conditions: • The environmental impact of the proposed action. • Any adverse environmental effects which cannot be avoided should the proposal be implemented. • Alternatives to the proposed action. • The relationship between local short-term uses of man's environment and the maintenance and enhancement of long-term productivity. • Any irreversible and irretrievable commitments of resources which would be involved in the proposed action should it be implemented.

Information regarding the use of ixanganese alloys has hitherto been incomplete and available only from widely scattered sources. This paper attempts a systematic description of properties and uses of alloys other than manganese bronze, manganin and duralumin, which are probably the only non-ferrous alloys associated with manganese in the minds of most metallurgists. Properties of Manganese Manganese can react either acid or basic; it is hard to obtain in the pure state; it has two different crystalline lattice structures, both of the cubic system, one stable above 850" C. and the other below 650" C., both coexisting in the intermediate range. Although the commercial product is hard and brittle, the pure metal seems to be ductile. In fact Zhemchuzhny, in Russia, was able to obtain ductile manganese and draw it to fine wires by the simple expedient of adding about 3 per cent. copper to the alumino-thermic product. Copper most probably brings the sili-cides, aluminides, nitrides and carbides present in the commercial product into a much less harmful form of distribution. One industrial use that can be foreseen for wrought manganese articles is as anodes for electrolytic processes in sulfate and nitrate solutions, particularly with high voltages. A practically insoluble skin of manganese peroxide is likely to form in such cases and an insoluble and strong anode material will be available. Manganese as a Scavengek Because of its activity manganese might become the most efficient scavenger and refiner of copper, were it not for the fact that 0.01 per cent.

THE consensus of opinion in the published literature on. Grecian magnesite is that it has been formed by alteration of the serpentine, which in turn was itself a product, of metamorphism from the original olivine intrusion. The general opinion seems to be that the magnesite was formed by descending waters heavily charged with CO2. Inasmuch as this opinion is held by engineers far better qualified than I to speak authoritatively on this subject, I hesitate to dispute that theory. However, certain occurrences coming under my observation do not, to me at least, seem to-entirely substantiate this theory. LOCATION Most of the Grecian magnesite comes from the Island of Euboea, although more recently some deposits have been opened on the mainland near the City of Saloniki, which prior to the war was Turkish. The island, comprising a state or province in the Greek political structure, is roughly 110 miles long and varies from 10 to 30 miles in width. It lies off the east coast of the Greek peninsula in the AEgean Sea with its long axis extending in a northwest-southeast direction. It is separated from the mainland by a long narrow arm of the sea known as the Atalanti Canal. Chalkis (Halkis), the capital on the west coast of the island, is the northern terminus of a branch of the state-owned railway and is connected with the mainland by a single-span, movable, highway bridge, roughly 150 ft. long.

The following pages discuss some problems connected with the manufacture of steel by the open-hearth process. The methods employed necessarily enter into the domain of what is called theory; but the results are eminently practical. The determination of the various losses of thermal power and the investigation into the chemical reactions in the bath, are important to every manufacturer. It will be understood that definite figures concerning one furnace and one system, will not apply to all other furnaces and systems; but it is hoped that methods are developed, which are capable of general application and which will shorten the labors of others. The gas-calculations contain nothing entirely novel; but certain methods appeared to be very convenient and they are here elaborated in order that others may have a model to follow. The determination of the loss of iron by weighing the slag and finding the percentage of iron therein, is probably unusual. If so, the fact is to be regretted, since this is the only way that an accurate result can be obtained. The common method of estimating the loss in open-hearth work, is to subtract the weight of metallic products from that of the materials charged. Nothing could be more unsatisfactory, inaccurate and meaningless. Pig-iron, steel, wrought-iron and ore are charged into the furnace; complicated chemical reactions occur; the sand of the pig-iron, the slag from the wrought-iron, the gangue of the ore, all rise to the top ; the silicon, manganese and carbon burn and leave the metal; some of the iron oxidizes and goes into the slag; some of the ore is reduced and gives up metallic iron ; the recarbonizer is added, the mission of which is to waste itself; in the pouring of the steel, pit-scrap is made in the ladles, around the moulds and under the spout; the errors in weighing the products join hands to make accuracy impossible; and then the " loss" is determined by diffrence !

The information in this paper was collected by the author during a five years' residence in the State of Minas Geraes. Outside the State itself, very little is known of the gold-field. Such accounts as have been published are antiquated and contained in publications mostly out of print. The increased attention now attracted to the natural resources of Brazil, and the probability that American capital will be, in the near future, largely invested there, will make an up-to-date account specially useful at this time. I. Historical and General. Soon after the Jesuits founded what is to-day the city of S?o Paulo, gold was discovered in the streams of the neighborhood; and this incited the natives, known as paulistas, to look for it farther afield. After many expeditions into the interior, gold was found in quantity in placer-deposits in the vicinity of Ouro Preto, in 1699, by a prospecting party headed by Antonio Dias. The name of Ouro Preto (black gold) was given because of the superficial dark coating of the gold, and the inhabitants of the district were known as mineiros (miners). Later on, the placers of Cuiaba, in the State of Matto Grosso, were discovered in 1718, and those of the State of Goyaz in 1724. All this territory was at the time a private colony, but on account of its increasing importance it was taken over by the Crown, and in 1739 a royal governor was appointed, with his nominal capital in S?o Paulo, though for a number of years the real capital was Ouro Preto. In 1711 Ouro Preto was raised to the rank of a city, with the name of Villa Rica de Ouro Preto (" rich city of black gold"); and in 1720, by reason of administrative difficulties, Minas Geraes was constituted a separate colony from S?o Paulo, with Villa Rica as its capital. Where once a 1 million st per yr (910,000 mt/yr) mine was rare, 3-5 million st per yr (2,730,000-4,550,000 mt/yr) mines are not uncommon today in the bituminous industry. This great increase in production, made possible through mechanization, requires greatly improved loading facilities just to get the coal away from the mine. Also, there is a trend to- ward combining production from more than one mine and cleaning it in a single preparation plant. In addition to increased loading capacity, this frequently necessitates raw-coal storage and blending facilities. The development of the unit train with its attendant economics has contributed more than any other factor to the widespread construction of storage and high-speed loading facilities. Mexico has been famous for its silver-mines ever since the Spanish conquest; but in respect to gems, although many varieties occur, yet only a few have been obtained in any important amount. Considering the extent of country in Mexico and ill the adjoining States of the Central American Republics, and the richness of mineral wealth that must surely exist there, our present knowledge of the occurrence of precious stones is remarkably small. The great prevalence of igneous rocks would lead us to anticipate the future discovery of many localities of gems and ornamental stones, when fuller scientific exploration shall have taken place.* At the present time the only gem-stone that is systematically mined in Mexico is opal, and the only important ornamental stone is tecali, the so-called Mexican onyx. The study of earthquakes long ago developed the fact that by study-ing the travel .times of the various groups of waves from the same earthquake, as received on seismographs :it varying distances, major discont'inuities in the earth's crust, could be reasonably well defined. Using this original discovery, and adapting the mathematical methods originally devised in seismology for determining the depth below the surface at which such discontinuities occur, other investigators were able to develop a new branch of seismology which promises to be extremely useful in extending the boundaries of our information on local conditions Below the earth's surface. As an outstanding example of the applications of this work, we have the so-called " seismograph " exploration of the Gulf Coastal region, which has resulted in the discovery of a large number of salt domes, from many of which oil fields may be developed. The original seismological investigations, from which different major discontinuities in the earth's crust were deduced, as well as these later successful experiments in locating salt-dome structures, involve relatively simple problems. In each case we arc dealing with surface materials in which elastic waves will be propagated with a fairly definite velocity. Under this material we have something quite different', in which the elastic waves will be propagated with a much higher velocity. The transition from one medium to the other is likewise relativtly abrupt. For example, in the Gulf Coastal region the sedimentary formations have a velocity of 6000 or 7000 ft. per sec., while the velocity of elastic waves in the cap rock of a salt dome may exceed 15,000 ft. per sec. Under such conditions, delineation of the formation is a relatively simple matter, and, furthermore, there is very little opportunity for ambiguous results. I.—The Deep-Level Shafts. The gold-deposits of the Witwatersrand (Anglice, " White Waters' Range ") are, as is well-known, more or less parallel and tilted sedimentary beds of quartz-pebble conglomerate impregnated with gold. These beds, however, are locally called "reefs"—a term equivalent in signification to the American "ledge"—and, like the latter, usually applied to lodes, though covering in practical usage all deposits of tabular form. The first developments of the reefs of the Rand were naturally made along their outcrops. Since the mining law of the Transvaal does not confer upon locators the "extralateral right," the property of each locator upon the outcrop or apex ends with the vertical planes drawn through the boundaries of the claim. Consequently those portions of the reefs which lie "on the dip," beyond these boundaries, are separately acquired by locating new surface-claims, and are usually to be mined only by means of vertical shafts, reaching the reefs at considerable depths. The term "deep-level properties " is given to such claims on the dip, and the " deep-level shafts " are the vertical shafts sunk in the hanging-wall of the Witwatersrand reefs, in contradistinction to the incline-shafts almost universally employed on the outcrop-properties. Number and Distribution.—The accompanying diagram, Plate I., shows the number and depth of these deeplevel shafts, completed or under process of sinking, up to January 1, 1900. Study with the electron microscope of the carbides in vanadium-chromium-molybdenum steels after tempering up to 1000 hr at 600 teelsto 1400°F confirmed that alloy carbides are formed at the secondary hardening temperature by decomposition of the plate-like iron carbides. It was also demonstrated that vanadium carbide persists as much smaller particles than do chromium- or molybdenum-bearing carbides. Conditions conducive to the formation of fine vanadium carbides are indicated to be favorable for high temperature strength. IN order to determine the effects of long exposure at high temperatures on vanadium-bearing steels, a survey has been made of their hardness and carbide structure. The behavior of carbides in the tempering of martensite was studied by X ray diffraction and electron microscope examination of electrolytically extracted residues in greater detail than in an earlier investigation.' A group of steels with about 0.25 pct carbon and containing chromium up to 5 pct, molybdenum up to 1 pct, and vanadium up to 1 pct was either quenched or annealed and then tempered for peri- ods of up to 1000 hr at 600° to 1400°F. Their hardness after tempering agreed with the Hollomon and Jaffe2 relation of equivalency of time and temperature, and with the degree of secondary hardening predicted from composition. Further, the appearance of the carbides indicated that the time and temperature equivalency relation was also applicable to the degree of carbide development. The mechanism of the tempering of martensite was demonstrated more clearly than in the earlier study. It was confirmed that carbides develop from martensite as poorly defined plates of the Fe2C type carbide followed by thickening of the plates with a transition to Fe,C. Finally the plate structure deteriorates into a lacy mass from which alloy carbides emerge as chunky particles that grow slowly with further increase of tempering temperature. Vanadium carbide derived from tempered martensite was found in characteristically small particles that tended to grow very slowly. The addition of chromium or molybdenum to a steel with predominant vanadium carbide tended to introduce carbides of a chromium- or molybdenum-bearing type having a somewhat larger particle size. The Cr,C, type carbide particles were larger than those of the V,C, type and somewhat smaller than the carbides in steel containing both Cr,C and M,C. Similar observations were made of the carbides in the pear lite of annealed steels. It appeared that high temperature properties would be benefited by the retention of the fine carbide particles that result from a balance of composition and heat-treatment designed to produce a maximum amount of vanadium carbide.
