The effect of low pressures on the flow and fracture behavior of molybdenum is described. For poly crystalline samples, room-temperature tensile tests indicate greater ductility under 10 Torr than under intermediate pressures up to and including atmospheric pressure (760 Torr). In addition, tests conducted at 760 Torr under atmospheres of air, dry nitrogen, and purified argon exhibited no apparent difference in mechanical properties. Critical tests involving baking in situ as well as those involving single-crystal deformation further imply that the ductility effect is a pressure-dependent phenomenon related only to the fracture process. This dependency is discussed in terms of adsorption and diffusion contributions. THE effect of very low pressures on material properties has heretofore been presumed to be important only for substances possessing relatively high vapor pressures at ambient temperatures. Research has therefore been concentrated primarily on organic solids and liquids, and in some instances on metals such as zinc and cadmium. Most vacuum-effect studies' on the mechanical behavior of metals have been performed under conditions of either cyclic loading or creep rupture at elevated temperatures, i.e., over extended time periods. These studies were not restricted to high vapor pressure materials but also encompassed such metals as gold, copper, and nickel. Very little concern, however, was placed upon the importance of a vacuum environment on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to a simple unidirectional deformation at ambient temperatures. A tension test is generally of short duration as compared to a creep test, and at room temperature vacuum effects if any would be expected to be surface-limited. In early 1963, Kramer and podlaseck2 reported a change in the bulk flow behavior of aluminum single crystals during room-temperature tension tests. The deformations were performed under pressure conditions of 760 to 3.4 X 10-8 Torr and indicated for the first time a vacuum surface effect contributing to the bulk tensile behavior of metal specimens. As a consequence, an experimental program was initiated in this Laboratory to study the effects of ultrahigh-vacuum conditions on the mechanical behavior of metals. The results of a preliminary study on poly-crystalline molybdenum3 revealed, unlike Kramer's observations of changes in the stress-strain behavior, only an increased ductility under ultrahigh vacuum. Flow behaviors were nearly identical for all tests re- gardless of pressure. This paper presents comprehensive results obtained in this area of research. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three material categories were used in this study: sintered and are-cast polycrystalline molybdenum of nominal purity 99.93+ pct and single-pass electron-beam zone-refined molybdenum single crystals having a nominal purity level of 99.99+ pct. The interstitial levels (weight percent) as determined by the Materials Testing Laboratories, Division of Magnaflux Corp., were as follows: sintered molybdenum (C— 0.005, H—0.0004, O—0.015, N—0.008); and arc-cast molybdenum (C-0.0038, H-0.0003, O-0.015, N-0.023). Single-crystal molybdenum obtained from Materials Research Corp. had a typical interstitial analysis of C-0.0015, H-0.00007, O—0.00045, and N-0.0001. Tensile specimens having a 5 mm diam by 50.8 mm length were prepared from these materials. An average grain diameter of 0.059 mm was obtained for the sintered specimens following a 4-hr, 1600°C heat treatment. Grain sizes from 0.019 to 0.149 mm were obtained in the arc-cast specimens following heat treatments from 1100° to 1600°C for 1 hr. This series of specimens was used exclusively for the grain-size effect studies. All samples were electrolytically polished in 97 pct sulfuric acid solution prior to testing. Experiments were performed at room temperature in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system positioned in an Instron tensile machine, Fig. 1. A constant strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4 sec-1 as derived from crosshead displacement was assumed for the deformations. Starting vacuums ranged from 2 to 0.5 X 10-10 Torr. Calcium metal was found to deoxidize thorizcm at 1000° to 1200° C. The reaction kinetics were determilled and related to the diffusion coefficients of oxygen in thorium. The solubility of oxygen in thorium, the minimum oxygen concentration, and the diffusion coefficient were determined from 1000° to 1200°C. This firocess results in the lowest oxygen concentrations zohich have been reported for thorium metal. FOR many years it has been known that calcium metal will reduce thorium oxide to thorium metal. This reaction has been the basis for several methods of preparing thorium metal. From the equations giv-by Kubaschewski and vans, ' AF" for the reaction Cao, + Tho,(,) - CaO(,, + Th(,) was calculated and found to be -3.4 kcal at 1000°C, -2.5 kcal at llOO°C, and -2.0 kcal at 1200°c. Thorium is very slightly soluble in liquid calcium, and the solubility of calcium in solid thorium is very low. Consequently these metals would be in essentially their reference states. If thorium containing oxygen were equilibrated with liquid calcium between 1000° and 1200°C, the oxygen content of the thorium would have to be below the solubility limit in thorium. Oxygen is one of the impurities most difficult to remove from thorium and is the most abundant impurity in metal prepared by almost all known methods. Fortunately, oxygen does not have a large influence on the properties of thorium because the solubility in solid thorium is very low. EvenT in thorium containing 100 ppm of 0, particles of thorium oxide can be observed in the microstructure. In view of the incompatibility of thorium oxide and liquid calcium and the low solubility of thorium oxide in thorium, the deoxidation of thorium by this method was investigated. For thorium containing an amount of oxygen well in excess of the solubility limit, the reaction should proceed in the following sequence. The oxygen content of the thorium matrix near the surface would be depleted by the diffusion of oxygen to the surface. At the surface, the oxygen would react with calcium to form calcium oxide. To maintain equilibrium within the thorium, thorium oxide would dissolve to keep the matrix saturated. Consequently, the thorium-oxide particles would disappear first at the surface and then the particle-free rim would grow in thickness. If the rate-controlling step were the diffusion of oxygen through this layer of thorium which was growing in thickness in direct proportion to the amount of oxygen removed, the well known parabolic time law should be observed. If the oxygen concentration at the surface of the thorium and at the inner surface of the deoxidized rim were known, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in thorium could be calculated from the parabolic rate constant. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The thorium metal used in this study was prepared by calcium reduction of ThF, by the method described by Wilhelm.' The analysis of this metal is given in Table I. The carbon was determined by combustion, the oxygen by the HC1-insoluble residue method, nitrogen by the Kjeldahl method, and the other elements by emission spectroscopy. A section of this ingot was hot rolled at 600°C to 1/4 and 1/8-in. thick plates. Specimens approximately 7/8 in. square were cut from these plates, and all surfaces of the specimens were cleaned and smoothed by filing with a clean file. Individual specimens were placed in 1-in. diam by 2-in.-long tantalum capsules. Approximately 1 g of clean, high-purity calcium was placed in the capsules and an end closure arc-welded in place. The tantalum capsules were sealed in Inconel crucibles to protect the reactive metals from oxidation. The entire loading procedure was done in a glove box filled with pure argon. The loaded crucibles were placed in a muffle furnace, controlled within 2OC of the desired temperature, for a measured length of time. After the specimen had cooled to room temperature, it was sectioned perpendicular to the large faces and through the mid-point of two of the sides. The sectioned specimen was mounted and polished through Linde A abrasive. The rim which was free of thorium-oxide particles could be clearly observed microscopically as mechanically polished. MINE-DRAINAGE and the ever-increasing demand for water on the plains have within the past few years necessitated the driving of a great number of adits and tunnels, including many of considerable size and great length. In most instances, ex isting conditions have called for extreme rapidity of execution; and this necessity, coupled with the high altitudes at which most of the work has been carried on, excessive freight-rates, and difficulty -of access, has involved many complex and interesting problems. One of the most rapidly executed undertakings of this class is the Laramie tunnel, recently completed for the Laramie-Poudre Reservoirs & Irrigation Co. This tunnel is driven through Green ridge, a spur of the Continental Divide, which separates the Laramie river from the Cache-la-Poudre in Laramie county, Colo. Green ridge is extremely persistent, and further northward in Wyoming is known as Sherman hill, the highest point on the Union Pacific railway. At the point where the tunnel is driven, two opposing bends bring these streams within 2.5 miles of each other, with a difference in elevation of 500 ft. The rock exposed on the banks of the two rivers does not differ materially in hardness; and, without a geological study of the conditions involved, it would appear that the difference in the depth of erosion of the two streams is due principally to the greater volume of water at this point in the Cache-la-Poudre, which has a drainage-area above the tunnel-portal of 110 sq. miles, as against 30 sq. miles of natural drainage for the Laramie. To increase the water-supply at the tunnel, however, this latter amount has been augmented by two side collection-canals, which bring the available drainage-area up to 84 square miles. IN his paper on the calculation of hardenability from chemical composition, Grossmann1 discussed the effect of most of the alloying elements used commercially. The purpose of the work reported in this paper was to determine the effect of several other elements on hardenability-arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cobalt, columbium, germanium, tellurium, tin, aluminum, and titanium-and to extend the range of composition of some of the elements studied by , Grossmann-chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and silicon. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS To determine the effect on hardenability, suitable amounts of the alloying elements were added to experimental heats and the hardenability determined by means of end-quenched hardenability specimens. The steels were melted in a high-frequency induction furnace with a basic crucible, using ingot iron as a base for some of the heats and S.A.E. 1015 for others. The alloying additions were made as ferroalloys or as metal, depending on the ' alloying element. Hundred-pound heats were split and poured into square, tapered, cast-iron ingot molds with hot tops. Aluminum was not used as a deoxidizer in most of the heats. The ingots were homogenized for 12 hr. at 1260°C. (2300°F.) , and forged into rounds of 1 ½ in. diameter. These bars were normalized twice from 840°C. (1550°F.) before machining into Jominy bars. THIS paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.[+] Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Barberton constitutes the world's deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 20-40 ft. Fractured. sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), 3/8 by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets, 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. THE SHAFT-SINKING OPERATION The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. The head-frame, while ordinary, featured: (I) a storage pocket of 300 cu. ft. capacity with truck servicing facilities, and (2) pneumatically operated dump doors, which were actuated by the hoistman, thus caring for the dumping of the "ball-and-chain"

The proration of oil produced in the field frequently is based partially or entirely upon the gas-oil ratio of wells. The measurement of the gas-oil ratio is one of the more important field tests in regulatory and pro-ration work, and the test always should be conducted according to standardized methods and procedure. Obviously, the gas-oil ratio and the volume of gas produced by a well depend upon many factors but should be independent of the method of measurement and of the devices used to measure gas and oil. Consequently, the volume of gas accompanying a barrel of oil produced by a well may be measured by any reliable and accurate device or instrument. Frequently either a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is used for this purpose, and for a particular well the same rate of flow of gas should be obtained regardless of whether a critical flow prover or an orifice well tester is employed in the test. In Texas, when using either instrument, either Capacity Table 1 or 5' is employed in making the necessary computations. If the tables are used, a discrepancy always is found whenever the two instruments are compared by extrapolation to the same conditions of flow. Clearly, Tables 1 and 5 must be at fault in some respects. The orifice well tester and the Bureau of Mines type of critical flow prover are essentially the same instrument; both devices utilize a square-edged orifice 1/8 in. in di-ameter as the primary element, and both freely discharge gas to the atmosphere. Tables for the orifice well tester' have been published in the ranges of 0 to 15 in, of water and 0 to 40 in. of mercury (Hg) differential in pressure. Coefficients for the critical flow prover have been published for differentials in pressure greater than 75 psia. An extrapolation of either differs from the other set of data as much as 18 per cent at some points. No immediately obvious reasons for the discrepancy was found, and data available from the literature were insufficient to effect reconciliation. Consequently, a series of experiments was performed to check the available data and to determine discharge coefficients for the two devices in an overlapping range of differential pressure. The correlating equation used in preparation of tables such as Tables 1 and 5' is the so-called hydraulic equation, Q = C1 vh .....(1) The tables cover orifice sizes from 1/8 through 1 1/4 in. A second set of tables, for use with greater differentials in pressure, apply only to the 3/4, 1, and 1 1/4-in. orifice plates over a pressure range of 0 to 40 in. of Hg. The correlating equation used in preparation of the tables is Q = C2 vH(29.32 + 0.3H)/G . (2) Each of these equations is valid only for the range to which it has been applied, and neither equation is valid for extrapolation. Theoretical equations for flow through an orifice are based upon assumptions of fractionless flow and an emergent jet the size of the orifice. A multiplier, C,, called the discharge coefficient, is inserted into the theoretical expression to compensate for both frictional losses and the contraction of the jet experienced in the plane of the orifice. Buckingham3 shows that C, should vary with the ratio of upstream to downstream pressure for flow of a compressible fluid at any average linear velocity through the orifice less than the velocity of sound. Work published by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics4 indicates that the variation continues into the so-called critical flow region until the vena contracta coincides with the plane of the orifice. The NACA work, however, does not indicate a leveling off of the coefficient. The work of the Bureau of Mines5 for the critical flow prover was based on differential pressures greater than 75 psi and indicates that the discharge coefficient, Cd, is constant in this region at a value of about 0.86.

Phosphosilicate glass films were formed, by reacting gaseous P2O5 with SiO2, over a large range of temperature (800° to 1200°C) and gas phase composition (nearly two orders of magnitude of effective P2Ospressure). The film compositions generally corresponded with the liquidus curve, delineating the maximum solubility of the tridymite Phase of SiO 2 in phosphosilicate liquid solution at the temperature of film formation. It is shown that the P2O5 concentration of the phosphosilicate liquid film tends to decrease by reaction with the underlying SiO 2 layer until the liquidus curve is reached. The validity of the thermodynamic argument used in this explanation is supported by the results of a determination of the composition of borosili-cute films, prepared by reacting gaseous B2O3 with SiO2 at different temperatures. The kinetics of phosphosilicate film formation were described by a model predicated on a steady-state diffusion of P2O5 through the film. UNDERSTANDING of the processes leading to formation of phosphosilicate and borosilicate glasses is of great importance for producing passivating layers on FET devices. Passivating films with optimum characteristics are preferably formed in a separate step, independent of the doping of the semiconductor.' The results of an investigation carried out to gain improved insight into the mechanism of glass formation are presented in this paper. It would be expected that application of the known Pz05-Si02 and B 2 O 3-SiO2 phase diagrams should be useful in extending understanding of the glass-forming processes. However, the question of the propriety of treating thermally grown SiO2 in these binary oxide systems by the methods of equilibrium thermodynamics must be considered when this application is attempted. Although Sah et a1.' and Allen et al. 3 investigated the kinetics of formation of phosphosilicate glass (PSG), they failed to adequately relate their diffusion models to the occurrence of experimentally observed phases in the PSG/SiO 2/Si system. Horuichi and yamaguchi4 investigated the diffusion of boron through an oxide layer and described their results in terms of a model similar to that of Sah and coworkers. More recently, Kooi 5 and Snow and Deal6 reported the compositions of PSG films formed by depositing P2 O 5 onto SiO2. These compositions apparently coincide with those at the liquidus curve delineating the maximum solubility of crystalline SiO2 in phosphosilicate liquid solutions. These authors did not discuss the thermodynamic implications of their results on the structure of thermally grown SiO2 films. The structure of thermally grown Sio2 films and that of vitreous silica are generally thought to be quite similar. Since the solubility of a substance depends on its structure, it is relevant that the solubility of vitreous silica in water7 is highly reproducible, like the solubility of thermally grown SiOz in phosphosilicate liquid. Furthermore, the vitreous silica-water system appears to be in true thermodynamic equilibrium (viz., the same solubility value can be approached from both supersaturated and under-saturated solutions). Sosman7 suggested that a type of two-dimensional lattice may form at the silica/solution interface, resulting in the observed solubility behavior that is characteristic of a crystalline solid. An alternative explanation may be that vitreous silica has a microcrystalline grain structure. Other investigators have suggested that vitreous silica has essentially the structure of B cristobalite,' or is composed of microcrystals of p tridymite or cristobalite, or a mixture of both. Presumably the grain size would be sufficiently large to minimize any appreciable contribution of the grain boundaries to the solubility of the crystalline matrix. The present investigation was carried out to clarify the significance of the boundaries in the Pa,-SiO, and B2O3-SiO2 Systems in determining PSG and BSG (borosilicate) film compositions. Furthermore, the kinetic data for PSG film formation were extended, using a wider range of formation parameters than were previously reported. One model describing the kinetics of film formation will be presented that is compatible with the thermodynamics of the Pa5-Si02 system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Glass Film Preparation. SiO2 films (1000 to 8000A thick) were obtained by oxidation of silicon substrates in dry O2 at 1100°C. PSG and BSG films were prepared by exposing these layers to gaseous oxides obtained by reacting high-purity POC13 and BBr3, respectively, with O2. INTERNAL friction measurements, carried out as functions of temperature, have been used extensively to obtain data on the mobility of interstitial impurities in the Group V metals, vanadium, colum-bium, and tantalum. For a given frequency of vibration, the internal friction peaks at a temperature which depends principally on the particular metal and interstitial impurity. Relaxation times and corresponding activation energies are determined from a knowledge of such peak temperatures for various vibration frequencies. These experimentally determined relaxation times are related to the average jump frequencies of the interstitial impurity atoms using the model of Snoek1 and can be related to macroscopic diffusion coefficients as shown by Polder.2 In these Group V elements, the impurity whose diffusion rate has been the hardest to pin down by the internal friction technique has been carbon. The experimental difficulties associated with carbon in these metals were not evident in the earliest investigation carried out by Ke on tantalum.3 The carbon peak was thought to occur near 140°C at 1 cps on the basis of the enhancement of the height of this peak measured on specimens which had been coated with colloidal carbon and heated in vacuo at 1200°C. Presumably on the basis of similar evidence, Wert identified a peak also near 140°C at 1 cps in columbium with the diffusion of carbon in that element." Later, the difficulties of admitting carbon into these metals without simultaneously introducing oxygen were pointed out by Ang and Wert- nd by Marx, Baker, and Sivertsen.6 The latter suggested that the peaks attributed to carbon in tantalum and columbium might arise from the presence of traces of oxygen, adventitiously absorbed during the carburization. Such suspicion was confirmed, at least in tantalum, when it was found possible to prepare C-Ta specimens without contamination by oxygen. Specimens sci prepared, aitnough high in carbon content, gave no evidence of a damping peak near 140°C.7 Recently, the authors were able to Show that carbon diffuses in tantalum at a rate only slightly slower than that for nitrogen.8 At 1 cps, the carbon peak lies at 34g °C, only a few degrees above the nitrogen peak at 341 °C. However, the two could be distinguished by a different stability with respect to aging at 400 °C and by a different dependence of peak height on solute concentration. On the basis of this experience with tantalum, it appeared worthwhile to search also for a carbon peak in columbium in the vicinity of the nitrogen peak." In this report, the location of the carbon peak in columbium is made known and its position relative to the nitrogen peak is compared with the authors' previous findings in tantalum. In addition, a second source of internal friction seen only in specimens of very high purity is discussed. Columbium was obtained from the Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. as either 30 or 40 mil diam stock. The manufacturer gives the following analysis as typical of this material: 99.4 pct minimum Cb, 0.10 pct maximum C, 0.5 pct Ta, 0.04 pct Ti, 0.02 pct maximum Si, and 0.01 pct maximum Fe. Wires 13 in. long were degassed near 2200°C for 4 to 16 hr in an ultimate vacuum better than 2.10" mm Hg in an apparatus described previously.8 This treatment reduced the oxygen and nitrogen damping peaks observed in the as-received material to less than 0.0001 in Q-1 above background. The latter value varied somewhat from specimen to specimen in the range 0.0004 to 0.0008, depending chiefly on the wire diameter and the frequency of vibration. The high temperature evacuation left the specimen in a rather soft condition, the Vhn being reduced to 40 from a value near 121 in the as-received conGi~iur~. The gram size was about the diameter of the specimen. After outgassing, specimens were loaded with carbon by absorption of such hydracarbons as methane or ethylene. PONCA CITY proved an ideal selection as a place of meeting for the Petroleum Division this fall. The accommodations at the Conoco Club were just what was required for such a gathering; the committee having the arrangements in charge functioned with the efficiency of veterans and the enthusiasm of neophytes; and the members and guests followed the speakers with close attention, entered the subsequent discussions with gusto, and divulged the "low-down" at private conferences. No one minded the drizzling rain on the first day, which only served to keep up the attendance in the auditorium; the weather then cleared up in time for a group picture before the gathering went their separate ways.

AT Lime Spur, Mont., the East Butte Copper Mining Co. has been quarrying limestone for twenty years. The quarry is beside the Northern Pacific R. R. in the Jefferson River canyon, 4 ½ miles east of Cardwell, at Lime Spur, Montana. HISTORY This quarry was opened early in 1900 by Dan Morrison of Whitehall, the discoverer of the Morrison cave, to supply a demand for smelter flux. Limestone was sold to the Pittsmont smelter of The East Butte Copper Mining Co. and to the Butte Reduction Works. As no particular effort was made at the quarry to select the rock that delivered to the smelters was unduly high in magnesia and impurities. The East Butte com¬pany, therefore. Bought the quarry. in 1909 and confined operations to the high-grade beds in order to supply rock of the desired purity for its own smelter and the Butte Reduction Works until the latter shut down. It also developed a market for some of its rock with the sugar factories. The latter market increased until in later years all rock, larger than 4 in. in size over a bar grizzly, was being shipped to the sugar factories, and the rock smaller than 4 in. was being used as a flux in the blast furnaces at the Pittsmont smelter. In 1924, the East Butte concluded a contract with the Anaconda company for the treatment of its ores, and the Pittsmont -smelter -was shut down: which made the minus 4-in. rock a useless by-product. Since there was not enough revenue in the sugar rock alone and also because of limited waste room it became necessary, if Lime Spur was to continue to operate, to increase- the proportion of plus 4-in. rock and to develop a market for the minus 4-in.

The kinetics of re crystallization and the effect of recovery on recrystallization of pure iron were investigated within the temperature range of 517" to 632 OC. Grain growth and activation energies were also studied. Two stages can be distinguished during recrystallization; the first is gvowth-controlled and the second is nucleation-controlled. The extent to which the first stage succeeds before the second stage begins depends on both temperature of recrystallization and temperature of recovery. The softening of cold-worked metals and alloys due to transformation of the deformed crystals to strain-free equiaxed grains during annealing is well-known, and early inestiators established that recrystallization kinetics is strongly influenced by minute quantities of impurities. Generally, it is believed that impurities decrease the rate of recrystallization and the rate of grain growth. To understand the basic phenomena of recrystallization, investigations should be on pure materials. Most of the research on high-purity materials has been on metals having the fee Bcc materials, and especially high-purity iron, have been studied only in recent years. It is known that recovery may influence recrystalliation;" however, no general description of the influence, applicable to all materials, has been presented. This paper presents results of a study of the recrystallization kinetics of high-purity iron, after 60 pct cold deformation by drawing, with particular reference to the influence of recovery on the rates of recrystallization and grain growth. From observations of these rates, conclusions are drawn concerning nucleation. MATERIAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Preparation of Material. High-purity iron, prepared by zone refining of vacuum-melted electroiytic iron at Battelle Memorial Institute under sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute, was used in this study. Table I gives the reported chemical analysis of the material, taken at a point near the last molten zone and thereby rep- resenting the maximum impurity level for the entire bar. Prismatic specimens, approximately 10 x 10 X 50 mm, were sawed from the 50-mm-diam bar, perpendicular to the zone-refining direction, and turned to cylindrical shape. These specimens were sealed in quartz capsules under vacuum, approximately 10"e mm Hg, austenitized at 930° C for 15 min, slowly cooled, removed from the capsules, and cold-worked in air by swaging to approximately 20-pct reduction of area. The encapsulating, austenitizing, and swaging operations were repeated two additional times, after which the samples were encapsulated, austenitized, and cold-drawn to 60-pct reduction of area. A further vacuum anneal at 630°C for 120 min and cold drawing to 60-pct reduction of area produced wire 2.8 mm in diameter. The drawn wire was electropolished to remove deformed material on the surface, after which it was sawed into 4-mm-long specimens for the recrystallization study. Microscopical examination before the final cold reduction revealed equiaxed grain structure with very fine grains in a thin layer near the surfaces of the specimen and nearly uniform ASTM 3-4 grain size in the center. Recrystallization Heat Treatment. a) Direct Recrystallization of Cold-Worked The 60 pct cold drawn iron specimens were recrystallized at five temperatures, 517, 556, 590°, 612, and 632C, in a lead bath covered with graphite (the temperature was controlled to 1°C). Specimens were treated for twelve different times at each temperature, and all were water-quenched after heat &eatment. b) Recrystallization Following Preliminary Recovery Heat Treatment. After cold working, specimens were sealed into quartz capsules under vacuum, 105 mm Hg, and recovery-annealed at 362", 400", and 440°C for 20 hr prior to recrystallization. No evidence of recrystallization was found

ALTHOUGH the United States has long led all other countries in both the production and consumption of mineral products, the trend seems definitely toward an increasing dependence upon foreign sources of supply. This is not to take the position that we are either a have or a have-not nation. For years we shall continue to secure a large proportion of our needed minerals: from our own mines, but we must face the fact that this century has seen "a more thorough and intense development of the mineral resources of the United States and a greater depletion of its irreplaceable mineral reserves than has occurred in most other countries. An audit of our mineral production given in the attached charts discloses the extent of our deficiencies. Because of these facts, low-cost foreign sources offer a promising field for the investment of a portion of our mining capital and an opportunity to obtain for the United States a greater supply of strategic metals and minerals. How. ever, to reach this end, the industrialist investing in the foreign field must have the full co-operation and strong backing of the Federal Government and the involved Federal agencies.

Batch grinding tests at short times were made in a laboratory rod mill with 10 x 14 mesh quartzite in corn syrup-water mixtures of varying viscosity. The weight fraction broken and size modulus were found to be independent of viscosity up to 20 cp, but at higher viscosities breakage of the feed decreased while the size modulus increased. The mechanisms of the effect of viscosity are discussed on the basis of particle dynamics. The effect of viscosity of the suspending medium on grinding has not been accorded much attention, although both wet and dry grinding are used in bene-ficiation processes and the viscosities of water and air differ greatly. schweyerl investigated the rates of grinding of quartzite in a pebble mill with air, water and glycerol as the suspending media and found the rate in terms of new surface developed per thousand revolutions of the mill to be constant and dependent on viscosity up to 20,000 rev, but to decrease and become independent of viscosity for longer grinding times. Based on considerations of the drag forces exerted on suspended particles and on the grinding media under turbulent and laminar flow conditions, viscosity can be expected to inhibit the rate of grinding in a given system as it changes the flow conditions from turbulent to laminar. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of viscosity of the suspending fluid in the batch grinding of a homogeneous feed of uniform size for short residence times, a region of more practical interest than the long times investigated by Schweyer. In actual grinding operations, the viscosity of the fluid does not change, but the consistency (apparent viscosity) of the pulp increases with additions of fines. In this study the consistency of the pulp was not measured because it was thought that the grinding times were too short to alter the apparent viscosity appreciably.* *Minus 200 mesh quartz at 65% solids has an apparent viscosity of about 25 cp as measured by a simple consistometer. For the purposes of this study, the effect of viscosity on grinding can be shown sufficiently well on the basis of the cumulative weight fraction finer than the feed size at any time, and the size modulus, ku, of the finer than feed sizes. The parameter, ku, is obtained from a form of the Gaudin-Schuhmann equation. METHOD AND MATERIAL The grinding tests were accomplished in a laboratory rod mill 10-1/2 in. long and 8 in. bore with a 20-lb rod charge consisting of two 1-in., eight 3/4-in., eight 1/2-in., and eight 1/4-in. diam rods. The mill speed was 43.2 rpm. Charges of 400 g 10 x 14 mesh Wisconsin quartzite** were ground for times of 60, **Courtesy of Minnesota Mining and Mfg. Co. 120, 180 and 240 sec in 500 cc of fluid made up of corn syrup and water in measured proportions. The temperature of the pulp was measured immediately upon completion of grinding, and the size distribution of the quartzite was determined by a wash-wet-dry screening technique. Corn syrup was chosen because of its high viscosity and ideal viscous behavior, and also because its density is not greatly different from that of water. The viscosity of each fluid mixture was measured with an Ostwald viscometer at 25 C. and a correction was made for the temperature of the pulp according to tabulated values for sucrose solutions. The density differences were so small that they probably did not significantly affect breakage. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The conditions of the grinding tests, computed viscosities, weight fractions finer than the feed size and values of a and ku are listed in Table I. The values of a and ku were taken from the linear portions of the log-log plots of cumulative weight fraction finer vs size for the various grinding times. The plots for tests in fluids of average viscosity 8.6 cp are shown in Fig. 1. In general all of the sets of curves were linear throughout most of the size

WITH experience, the indexing of back-reflection Laue patterns for cubic crystals is usually a straightforward matter. However, for noncubic systems where in general tables of interplanar angles are not available or when inexperienced personnel are involved, properly indexing a crystal is normally a tedious, time-consuming affair. The authors have written a digital-computer program which calculates and prints out a table of interplanar angles for an arbitrary crystal structure and then systematically searches through this table attempting to obtain a consistent fit to back-reflection Laue data supplied by the user. Of course it is possible simply to calculate a desired set of interplanar angles should this be the only requirement. The program was originally written in ALGOL for use on a Control Data G-21 computer and a preliminary version is described elsewhere.' A version in FORTRAN TV which has been run on an IBM 7040 and one in FORTRAN II run on an IBM 1620 are also available. While it is not the purpose of this communication to describe the program in detail, an indication of how the program operates may help one to decide whether the program would be useful under particular circumstances. The hypothetical example chosen involves the indexing of the zinc crystal which has a hexagonal structure and a c/a ratio of 1.856. Input data for this example consists of only nine cards: The first card controls the list of families of planes to be considered. If the Miller indices of a prospective family are (h k 1), the first digit places a limit, in this case 3, on the absolute values of any individual index. The second digit limits the sum (h +k + l + 1), in this case to 5. Therefore the families (013) and (112) are considered but the family (122) is not. All systems, including the hexagonal, are treated using three-digit Miller indices. The second card contains the crystallographic parameters required to define the system. The first digit is 0 if the system is rectangular, that is all angles are 90 deg. If the system is nonrectangular, as in this example, the digit 1 so indicates. The next three values are the lengths of the sides of the reference cell, a, b, c. The final three entries on the card are the angles, a, 8, y between the sides. The digit 0 on the third card indicates that more data follows, the digit 6 shows that a set of six planes is to be indexed, and the value 2.0 indicates that agreement between a tabulated angle and an input angle is considered adequate if their absolute difference is less than 2 deg. The fourth card lists the measured input angles. a12 = 38 deg, a13 = 24 deg, and so forth. More input angles are listed on cards five to eight with the latter giving the input angle 058 = 40 deg. The final card in this series indicates by the digit 1 that no more data is to be processed. The program operates in the following manner: 1) The input data from cards 1 and 2 is read, thereby indicating the crystal system to be examined and the crystallographic parameters of the particular crystal to be indexed. 2) A table of interplanar angles is generated. 3) The input angles contained on cards 4 to 8 are read. 4) The measured input data is systematically compared with the generated table of standard angles. All combinations of poles whose interplanar angles compare with the requisite, specified accuracy are printed out. If no adequate fit is found an indication of this is printed. A typical line from the generated table of interplanar angles is: (001) - (111) 74.92 64.99 It can be shown that in the Miller-Bravais system the first value corresponds to the angles between (0001)-(1121) and the second to that between (0001)-(1011). This particular set of data gave the following result for the planes 1 to 6: (011) (110) (121) (111) (112) (010) The ALGOL version also has the option of simply providing the Greninger-chart coordinates ? and 6

Geophysical prospecting for ore has been more or less at a standstill during the present crisis owing to the lack of interest in base-metal exploration. A notable exception is the increased use of electrical and magnetic methods in prospecting for gold, the former in Canada, United States, Sumatra, Africa and Western Australia, and the latter on the Rand. This application to gold prospecting marks a forward step in ore prospecting because it is based upon mapping the geology instead of a direct location of the ore in question, as the amount of gold in an average gold ore is far too small to have any influence upon the physical properties of the rock in which it occurs. The development has thus gone in the same direction as geophysical prospecting for oil; that is, to find geological conditions that are genetically connected with the gold ore as exemplified by known occurrences. Naturally the success of this indirect prospecting depends upon two things: (1) the soundness of the geological conclusions upon which is based the hope of discovering new deposits, because a great many geological "set-ups" are barren, and (2) the ability of geophysical methods to help the geologist to collect the pertinent geological data within reasonable cost, after which favorable structures may be drilled or trenched. The first point is one to be considered by the mining geologist. In the vicinity of producing mines or promising prospects, the chances of finding ore in quartz veins and shear zones are great, and a survey giving the location of these features will materially guide both surface and underground exploration. Even in outside exploration the chances are sometimes favorable. As an example may be taken the Northeastern Ontario-Western Quebec gold zone. Large areas are here covered with glacial and post-glacial deposits and a simple study of available maps reveals the fact that less than 30 per cent of the area can ever be even preliminarily prospected by cominonly used prospecting methods, of which the pick and shovel are the main tools. Tensile, hardness and density properties are presented for a new 18-8 stainless steel powder for the —50, —100, and —140 mesh cuts and also for a prepared blend containing 62 pct —325 mesh powder. The data were obtained for sintering temperatures of 2100° to 2350°F and for compacting pressures of 30 to 50 tons per sq in. A NEED has existed for a stainless steel powder of uniform composition from particle to particle, which could be readily molded and sintered, and which would yield moderate to high strength and ductility when processed into parts by standard powder metallurgy techniques. The literature reveals that previously available powders have been lacking in one or several of these desirable characteristics. Originally attempts to produce stainless steel powder by blending and diffusing elemental metal powders were unsuccessfu1.l A truly alloyed stainless steel powder reported by Dale in 1947 yielded reasonable mechanical properties but required an exceptionally high sintering temperature of 2400°F in pure dry hydrogen.' A later development reported in 1950 by Stern provided a stainless type powder of excellent molding properties' but this powder likewise required sintering at temperatures over 2350 °F and did not yield properties as high as those previously reported. The powder was not truly alloyed prior to sintering. A prealloyed stainless steel powder has been developed that is readily moldable at 30 to 50 tons per sq in., can be sintered at low temperatures (2100" to 2300°F), and which yields compacts with both high strength and ductility. The powder is prepared by the liquid disintegration method," direct from molten metal. Early attempts to make 18 pct Cr, 8 pct Ni stainless steel powder by this method did not produce a usable powder for pressing and sintering because of a preponderance of spherical particles with relatively high, surface oxide content. It was learned that silicon additions to iron alloys, powdered by this process, gave bright powder of low-oxide content and such additions were made to 18-8 stainless with similar results. An attendant change in particle shape occurred reducing the number of spheroids materially. The optimum composition which has been studied and is reported here contains approximately 2.5 pct Si. Silicon additions to stainless steel of the 18-8 type improve the resistance to high-temperature oxidation and promote the formation of ferrite. Corrosion resistance is, however, controlled by chromium content and even though ferrite may exist the corrosion resistance is not generally impaired.4 Experimental Procedure A detailed study of the 18-8, 2.5 pct Si powder has been made in accordance with the following outline: 1. IN the realm of ore dressing the most pregnant feat of all time was announced in 1945: the winning of the mineral raw materials which made the harnessing of atomic energy possible. Lost in the stupendous implications of the end result, in the two billion dollar hugeness of the project, and in the famous names attached thereto, the fact that crude uranium ores had to be concentrated received relatively little notice in the press. Only the final link in the concentrating chain was publicized-ether extraction of uranyl nitrate, developed by Hoffman and carried on by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Works, or methods developed by the Ames group under Spedding. Some of the earlier links represented less glamorous but equally difficult and exacting research. One may only speak a word of admiration for those who worked hard, accomplished much, and said nothing. The universal lament for most of the year was "man shortage." A group of Canadian engineers expressed it as "being so short of labor that no labor was available to develop laborsaving devices." . Despite this, an outstanding amount of mineral-dressing progress was made in 1945. Necessity allowed no alternative. The insatiable demand of war for minerals forced the exploitation of lower and lower grade ores, and of others not before considered of commercial character or use, requiring the mineral dresser to fight for and win new bridgeheads on the home front.

I. HISTORICAL. BARITE has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL DISTRIBUTION. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State-namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties:, Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties-Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell-but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.
