Henry Louis, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England (communication to the Secretary*).—In this paper Mr. Simons derives the various forms of revolving slime tables, of which the Harz and the Linkenbach tables are typical examples, from the old rectangular or box buddle. This I believe to be an error, at any rate if Mr. Simons attaches the same meaning as I do to the ((evolution" of a dressing appliance. By the '(evolution" of such an appliance I understand the progressive development and improvement of an appliance acting on a definite principle, such improvements having usually for their object the economy of labor in working the same, or the increase of its capacity; when an entirely new principle is introduced, I no longer look upon this as evolution from the old type, but as the origination of an independent type of appliance. The box buddle was no doubt the predecessor of the old Cornish round buddle, which was evolved from it with the object of saving the labor required to work the box buddle; both machines are horizontal-current separators, in which the separation of sands of different densities is effected by their differential rates of fall in a horizontal current of water of considerable depth. These appliances, though well suited to sands, are for obvious reasons not adapted to the treatment of slimes. The revolving tables of the Harz and similar types, on the other hand, act on the principle which I have called separation in thin films of water, and which Mr. Simons calls the film sizing principle, in which the resistance of the surface over which the pulp flows plays an essential part in determining the separation of the particles, and which is well suited to the treatment of slimes. Unlike the last principle, it will not work in deep bodies of water and cannot be used where considerable depth of material accumulates in the appliance, as in the box buddle and round buddle. As I have shown in my book, The Dressing of Minerals, p. 326, these revolving tables are a development of the appliance known variously as the flat buddle, flat table, or frame, the last name, which is the old Cornish one, being the one that I personally prefer. These primitive appliances, as well as the continuous-acting round tables described by Mr. Simons (his Figs. 10 et seq.) all work on the principle of separation in thin films, and are all adapted for the treatment of slimes; his buddles and round tables (Figs. 1 to 9) do not work upon this principle, and should therefore be sharply differentiated from the former. The evolution in each case of the continuous acting, more or less automatic, circular appliance from the primitive, intermittent, hand-worked, rectangular appliance has proceeded upon strictly parallel lines. The question of the evolution of the respective types involves a point of some importance as regards the principles of ore dressing.

Two massive sulfide zinc-copper ore bodies are in quartz-sericite schist (probably formed by regional metamorphism of sediments) and andesite of the Precambrian Yavapai Series, on opposite sides of a large rhyolite mass. The Copper Queen ore body is conformable with bedding of its schist host rock, but the Old Dick ore body probably crosscuts the strata. A lens of low-grade mineralization in chlorite schist, associated with the Old Dick ore body, crosscuts through 150 feet of strata. The ore bodies are almost entirely enclosed by premineral faults with less than 150 feet of displacement. The minerals of the ores are pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, with minor arsenopyrite and galena and small amounts of intimately associated chlorite, sericite, and calcite. Old Dick sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have mutual boundaries, and sphalerite grains contain abundant exsolved chalcopyrite. Copper Queen sphalerite-chalcopyrite intergrowths have extremely ragged boundaries, the sphalerite contains no exsolved chalcopyrite, and the ore overall has a schistose texture. The pre-mineral fault on the hanging wall of the Copper Queen ore body has had 100 feet of post-mineral displacement. Wall rocks of the Old Dick ore body locally have been sericitized. Andesite and quartz-sericite schists for at least several hundred feet around both ore bodies have been chloritized erratically and contain traces of copper.

Often an in situ leach is the only practical economic method for copper recovery from small low grade oxide deposits. The decision to develop a copper property by an in situ blast and leach is strongly dependent on ore grade, tonnage, hydrology, and the copper extraction and acid consumption rates. The inherent leachability of the ore will in part determine the desired amount of fracturing of the ore deposit by the blast in order to obtain a copper extraction rate that is economical. For the last several years Occidental Research Corp. (ORC), has undertaken a modest effort to address the question of how to best identify and determine the information necessary to predict and control the operation of an in situ leach for the economic recovery of copper. Modelling of the Leaching Process During the past 10 years the activity in the mathematical modelling of the leaching of copper sulfides in copper dumps and heaps has increased dramatically. The modelling of copper oxide leaching has not received as much attention. The acid leaching of non-sulfide copper minerals while chemically less complex, compared to sulfides, does generate a vertical acid concentration gradient in the ore heap being leached due to the acid-base nature of the reaction. This is generally not observed in sulfide deposits that are biologically active, due to the buffering action of opposing reactions involving the generation of sulfuric acid from sulfide minerals and acid consuming host rock. Thus, the objective of ORC 's copper oxide modelling efforts is to determine the leaching parameters which will account for this vertical acid concentration gradient. Knowledge of this gradient will result in the correct choice of the feed acid concentration to the top of the ore dump or heap, such that the effluent will have the desired pH.

Diffusion kinetics in disordered hcp Cd-Mg alloys have been investigated by means of the Kirkendall effect and concentration-penetration curves determined with an electron-microprobe analyzer. Self-diffusion coefficients of both species were determined at the three marker compositions obtained, averaging 27.6, 46. 7, and 78.1 at. pct Mg, by means of the Darken analysis. These coefficients were then corrected for the unequal and concentration-dependent partial molar volumes of the two elements with the Balluffi analysis, and for the vacancy flux effect by the Manning analysis. The latter correction reduced the Balluffi correction produced larger changes in the self-diffusiv-ities; neither, however, produced statistically significant changes in the Do's or the H'S. The most striking result of this investigation is that at all three compositions and at all temperatures studied both the uncorrected and corrected self-difjusivities of magnesium are higher than those of cadmium. The Cd-Mg system is the first one found in which the higher melting, lower vapor pressure element diffuses more rapidly. Both an empirical correlation due to Toth and Searcy and considerations of the atomic mechanism of diffusion indicate that this anomaly is probably due to a comparatively low value of the activation energy required for a magnesium atom and a vacancy to exchange sites, perhaps occasioned by the higher compressibility of magnesium atoms. KIRKENDALL effect studies have been previously reported for only two hcp solid solutions: the E phase of the Zn-Cu system1 and the a phase of the Cd-Hg system.' In neither investigation were the marker-movement studies supplemented with the concentration-penetration curve determinations necessary to evaluate self-diffusivities by means of the atano and the Darken analyses. The present program was undertaken to obtain both types of data on a hexagonal solid solution in order to provide more detailed information relevant to the mechanism of diffusion in this type of lattice. The Cd-Mg system was chosen for this study because the disordered solid solution extends across the entire phase diagram at temperatures above 253"c5 and the substantial difference in the melting points of the component pure metals promised that marker movements would occur at reasonably rapid rates should the diffusivities of the two species be as unequal as might be anticipated. The experimental convenience of the relatively low melting points of cad-miun and magnesium and the availability of extensive and accurate activity data6 (required for application of the Darken analysis) were additional reasons for selecting this alloy system. Since the anisotropy of diffusion is not large in either pure cadmium7 or pure magnesium,' the diffusion couples were prepared from polycrystalline components. The presence of a well-defined texture in the couples—the c axis of individual crystals tended to be normal to the diffusion direction— however, provides a fair degree of crystallographic definition to the data obtained. The principal (and entirely unexpected) finding of this investigation, that magnesium, the high-melting low-vapor pressure element, diffuses more rapidly than cadmium, in contradiction to a broad range of results in fcc and bcc alloys, as well as in the previously studied hcp alloys,172 makes the self-diffusivity determinations of immediate interest in understanding the origin of this anomalous result. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The cadmium (Belmont Smelting and Refining Co.) and magnesium (Dow Chemical Co.) used in this study were both of 99.99 pct purity. Alloys containing 51.0 and 65.6 at. pct Mg were prepared from these materials by melting under a MgC12-base flux in a high-purity graphite crucible. These alloys were subsequently hot-worked and then homogenized in a helium atmosphere at temperatures close to their solidus points. Sandwich-type diffusion couples of the type g/d/g were prepared from the pure metals by solid-state diffusion. Two-piece alloy couples of Mg/65.5 at. pct Mg (Mg/gCd) and Cd/51.0 at. pct Mg (Cd/CdMg) were welded by a liquation technique. The individual components of both types of couple were initially cylinders 1.27 cm in diam and in length; the ends of these cylinders were machined accurately flat and parallel. For both welding techniques, the pure cadmium cylinders and the alloys were chemically polished in a mixture of 40 pct ethyl alcohol, 40 pct hydrogen peroxide (30 pct conc), and 20 pct nitric acid,g while those of pure magnesium were polished in a solution of 10 pct nitric acid in ethyl alcohol.' Immediately afterwards, both metals were rinsed in freshly distilled acetone, and then in similarly purified methanol.' The Mg/Cd/g couples were assembled in a carefully cleaned stainless-steel welding fixture, in which a screw operating through a self-centering arrangement permitted a controlled pressure to be exerted upon a couple prior to welding.'' Tungsten marker wires 0.005 cm in diam were placed at the d:g interfaces of some of these couples, and imbedded in the couples during the application of pressure. Oxygen the present work on decavbuvization of liquid iron and previous studies on the kinetics of nitrogen absorption and desorplion are discussed in terms of the postulated mechanism, ManY of the early studies of rate of decarburization of liquid steel were of an exploratory nature and laboratory exppriments carried out pertained to open-hearth or oxygen steelmaking processes. References to previous work on this subject may be found in a literature survey made by Ward. Using more sophisticated experimental techniques, several investigators have recently studied the kinetics of decarburization of molten Fe-C alloys in oxygen-bearing gases. For example, Baker et al2.' reported their findings on the rate of decarburization of liquid iron, levitated by an electromagnetic field, in carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide-helium atmospheres. In these levitation experiments the samples used were small in size, e.g., -0.6-cm-diam spheres weighing -0.7 g, and the rates were measured for decarburization from about 5 to 1 pct C at 1660°C. The rates obtained under their experimental conditions were considered to be controlled primarily by gaseous diffusion through the boundary layer at the surface of the levitated melt. Parlee and coworkers3 measured the rate of absorption of carbon monoxide in liquid iron. The rates were found to follow first-order reaction kinetics, yielding a reaction velocity or a mass transfer coefficient in the range 0.2 to 0.4 cm per min. The coefficient was found to decrease with increasing carbon content of the melt. These investigators attributed the observed rates to the transfer of carbon or oxygen through the diffusion boundary layer adjacent to the surface of the melt. In the work to be reported in this paper, an attempt has been made to study the kinetics of gas-metal surface reactions involved in the decarburization of liquid iron. EXPERIMENTAL The experiments consisted of melting 80-g samples from an Fe-1 pct C master alloy in an induction furnace and decarburizing in controlled CO2-CO mixtures at 1 atm pressure and 1580°C. The master alloy was prepared by adding graphite to electrolytic "Plastiron" melted in racuo. None of the impurities in the master alloy exceeded 0.005 pct. The reacting gases were dried by passage through columns of anhydrone; in addition, CO2 impurity in carbon monoxide was removed by passage through a column of ascarite. A schematic diagram of the apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. A 1.25-in.-diam recrys-tallized alumina crucible containing the sample was placed inside a 3-in.-diam quartz reaction tube, all of which was surrounded by an induction coil. A 450-kcps induction generator was used as the power source. Water-cooled brass flanges, which contained the gas inlet, gas exit, and sight port, were sealed to the top of the reaction tube with epoxy resin. The reacting gases were metered with capillary flowmeters and passed through a platinum wire-wound alumina preheating tube, 0.25 in. ID and 11 in. long. The gases were preheated to about 1300°C. A disappearing-filament optical pyrometer was used to measure the melt temperature. The pyrometer was initially calibrated against a Pt-6 pct Rh/Pt-30 pct Rh thermocouple. The temperature was controlled to within +10°C by manually adjusting the power input to the induction coil. In a typical experiment, an 80-g sample of the master alloy was melted in a CO2-CO atmosphere having pcO2/pco = 0.02 and flowing at 1 liter per min. A negligible amount of carbon was lost and no significant reduction of alumina from the crucible occurred during melting, e.g., 0.005 pct Al in the metal. After reaching the experimental temperature of 1580°C, the gas composition was changed to that desired for a particular series of decarburization experiments. The duration of the transient period for obtaining the desired gas composition at the surface of the melt was about 20 sec . The flow rate of the reacting gas was maintained at 1 liter per min. After a predetermined reaction time, the power to the furnace was turned off. During freezing, which took about 10 sec, the amount of gas evolution was not sufficient to result in a significant loss of carbon. The samples were analyzed for carbon by combustion and in a few cases they were analyzed for oxygen by the vacuum-fusion method. RESULTS A marked increase in the rate of decarburization of iron with increasing pcO2/pco ratio in the gas stream is demonstrated by the experimental results given in Figs. 2 and 3 for pco2/pco ratios from 0.033 to 4.0. In one series of experiments, denoted by filled triangles in Fig. 2, the reacting gas was diluted with argon (48 vol pct) resulting in a slower rate of decarburization. Samples from two series of experiments with pco2/pco = 0.033 and pco2/pco = 0.10 (with argon dilufion) were analyzed for oxygen. In these Samples the oxygen content increased with reaction time

A description is given of the development of a process for making low sulphur steel on furnaces fired with 2 1/2 pet sulphur oil. Slag and metal are analyzed at melt. Slag weight is estimated. A simple method for calculating necessary lime additions for making 0.025 and 0.035 pct sulphur steel is given. DURING the last 15 years John Summers & Sons have been confronted increasingly by the problem of producing a low sulphur steel from high sulphur materials. The principles adopted, the processes used, the data collected on a furnace specially set aside to study this problem, and speculation on future developments are dealt with in this paper. This study is limited to two melting shops which make sheet steel only, of the following analysis: C, 0.06 pct; Mn, 0.33; S, 0.04, 0.035, 0.03, and 0.025; and P, 0.02 and 0.015. All the processes described have reference to the manufacturing of this steel and are not necessarily applicable, without modification, to other steels. The raw materials used are given in Table I. Development of Process About 1934, Schenck's work on phosphorus was applied to frame quantitative rules for the removal of phosphorus, with great success. We could however, neither in our own work nor in the voluminous literature, find any assistance to frame quantitative furnace rules to remove sulphur. Perhaps, we should have persevered with Schenck's outstanding chapter on sulphur in The Physical Chemistry of Steelmaking, but we missed the importance of one (Ss) sentence on p. 478. "Evidently this ratio -------- is [S] the important quantity to be considered from the point of view of chemical reaction; it is clear that the sulphur content of the steel alone, as frequently given in the literature cannot suffice for judging the success of the reaction unless special details are given regarding the sulphur charge and the amount of slag."' We were not however very successful in getting values for Schenck's "n" that agreed with (S) arrived at by our direct analysis. [S] In addition to Schenck's work much attention was given to V value. The formula selected for V was: (SCaO) — 1.57 (2 P2O5) (S SiO2) After plotting many charges a curve was obtained, based upon the relationship between the percentage sulphur in the finished steel and V value, Fig. 1. For a long time this was used as standard with about a 60 to 70 pct success on producer-gas fired furnaces, if all uprising scrap was used and no bought scrap used. An inspection of this curve shows clearly that it is not a quantitative manufacturing process, and that it was not sure enough to go to the trouble and expense of doing stage analysis for P,O,,

ONE of the important problems in the design of structures and machine parts subjected to rapidly applied loads is the determination of the strength and ductility of the material itself under such conditions. Realizing the need for such information, many investigations have been carried out in the past. Most of these experiments have been made using notched bars in bending either with the Charpy or Izod impact machine. While yielding valuable data on the effect of notches in the energy absorption of the material and on the condition of heat-treatment, this form of test does not lend itself readily to a determination of fundamental stress-strain relations. For this and other reasons, more attention has been paid recently to the tension impact test. An extensive literature already exists on the subject and only those investigations somewhat closely related to the present paper will be mentioned. For a more comprehensive list, the reader is referred to the Symposium on Impact Testing of the A.S.T.M., 1938. The work of Mann,1 Clark and Dätwyler,2 Nádai and Manjoine,3 Winlock and Leiter,4 Deutler,5 and Brinkmann,6 however, deserve especial mention. In most of the previous investigations on the subject, when stress-strain relations were obtained under high rates of loading, it was the common procedure to determine stresses based on the original area and strains based on the original length. Stress-strain curves were then constructed by [P OL, plotting So = Ao as a function of eo = Lo] where A o and Lo refer to the original area and gauge length, respectively. At present there exists a paucity of true stress-strain data in the impact problem. The advantages of constructing so-called true stress-strain curves in order to reveal the fundamental physical properties of the material for the tension test were discussed recently by one of the authors' It was shown that the true physical behavior of the material in the tension test could best be represented [by plotting the average true stress, S = P as a function of e = q' = log o = log Log] where P, A, L, S, e, and q' refer to the load, the cross-sectioned area while the load P is applied, the actual gauge length, the average true stress, the true strain and true reduction in area, respectively. Besides giving a better physical representation, the method has certain additional advantages in that the stress-strain curve so plotted becomes a straight line from the maximum load point to fracture. The construction of such- curves, however, while comparatively simple for the slow rates of loading customarily used in the tension test, presents certain difficulties for tensile impact in that both loads and diameters are required throughout the test. The nucleation rate of the a (pay) to 0 (white) tin transformation was measured as a function of temperature and a tin particle size using an X-ray diffraction technique. The powder specimens of a tin were essentially monodisperse and the small dinzension of the particles of these specimens was varied from 13 to 75 p. Several types of nucleation sites of differing potency were fbund to be operative in the nucleation process, but it could not be determined whether these sites were on the free surface of the tin particles or within the volume. Assuming that they were on the free surface, the average density of the most potent sites was calculated to be 2.5 to 5.3 x 10' sites per sq cnz through the application of a Poisson distribztion finction to the isothermal data. Analysis of the temperature dependence' of the rate constmts at a given fraction transformed suggests that the active sites are regions of higher free energy and not catalytic interfaces. Appreciable induction periods were observed at the lower temperatures of transformation. Experimental studies1 of solid-solid phase transformations have led to the belief that the new phase nucleates at structural imperfections. The purpose of the present work was to learn more about the mechanism of nucleation in solids and the nature of the singularities at which nucleation occurs. In this investigation nucleation rates in the isothermal transformation of gray to white tin were measured by an X-ray diffraction technique using essentially monodisperse powders of gray tin. This particular phase transformation was chosen for study because it presented fewer experimental difficulties than most others. The experimental temperature-control problems were minimal because the two phases coexist in equilibrium at 13.3"C, and measurable transformation rates occur at temperatures only slightly above room temperature. The growth rate of the P phase into the a2 is sufficiently fast to make the measured transformation rate equivalent to the nucleation rate, provided that the particle size of the samples is small enough; for the experimental temperatures used in this study, the particle diameter must be less than 100 p. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The P tin used in this study was obtained from Capper Pass and Son Ltd., North Ferriby, Yorkshire, England, and was of 99.999 pct purity. It was transformedS to the a phase and ground into a fine powder in an agate mortar. This powder was separated by a Roller air classifier into seven fractions whose dimensions, as determined by microscopic measurement of many thousands of particles, are given in Table I and whose distribution of size within each fraction is given in Figs. 1 and 2. RiteR, Salt Lake City, Utah.—We have every reason to believe that oil flotation will soon come into general use as a final guard against slime losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, and precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah— the old Eureka Hill property—where ores that were too low in value to warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble. SOME 2,000 years ago Pliny is supposed to have said, "Out of Africa always something new." It may perhaps even now be news to a great many that the Belgian Congo has in recent years been producing approximately a quarter of a ton of diamonds annually. For that is what the 1 1/4 million carats, the recovery from 40-odd operating mines, and about 20 or 25 per cent of the world's normal consumption, amounts to. In 1915, first exploitation operations produced less than 50,000 carats from two mines. The rapid expansion of operations following the Euro¬pean war meant a most rapid development of a virgin land. The interior is now reached by air in one day from the mouth of the Congo River, where steamers unload mail and passengers from Antwerp. This trip formerly consumed 4 to 6 weeks by a narrow-gage, wood-burning, railroad around the rapids of the lower Congo and Livingston Falls; by river boat to the heads of navigation, Djoko Punda on the Kasai or Luebo on the Lulua; and thence by caravan of native porters over narrow-trails to head¬quarters on the Tshikapa. Hundreds of miles of automobile roads have been constructed over veldt and through forest, bridging streams and ferrying rivers. The railway from Capetown to the Katanga copper district to the East, once two months away by trail is now reached in 2 or 3 days over fair automobile highway. Native "boys" who a few short years ago wore little more than a smile and a string of beads and to whom a wheelbarrow was a complicated piece of machinery, are today driving Fords, tending boilers and engines and operating electrical equipment, or are capable mine workmen, machinists and artisans, and dressed in all manner of cast-off white man's clothing. Even as late as 1920, due to difficulties of securing and transporting machinery during and just after the war, the crudest hand operations were the rule for the excavation, sizing, and concentration of the diamondiferous gravel. All washing and concentration is now mechanized, using steam or electric power, and where operations are sufficiently large to permit competition with native labor costs, excavation and transportation are also accomplished by machinery.

President McAuliffe presided, with C. H. Mathewson as associate chairman. Americo Albala was first called on to discuss the work of the Pan American Institute of Mining Engineering and Geology. C. Will Wright said that the need for such an organization was evident, and a resolution was passed asking the incoming President to appoint a committee to investigate cooperation with that body, of which Mr. Albala is executive secretary.

l. INTRODUCTION. THE last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores -in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior iron ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 ii was already 60,000000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-consumption will continue at the same rapid rate, especially with, the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is. therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent investigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-grade ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

When an excavation is made underground the original rock stresses are removed from the surfaces of the excavation. These surfaces converge to partially close the excavation and the superincumbent rock mass moves down towards the excavation. If the convergence of the surfaces of the excavation were controlled, energy generated by their motion against the controlling forces could be extracted. Since the total forces in the rock mass are not significantly affected by the excavation, stress concentrations arise around the excavation, which compensate exactly for those stresses no longer transmitted through the excavation. These phenomena give rise to two general principles which provide the basis for analyzing the effects of making any underground excavation. The first of these is that the total force resulting from the stresses across any plane in the rock, including any plane through the excavation, must be the same before and after the excavation is made. The second of these is that energy must necessarily be released as a result of making an underground excavation.

ONE of the problems of the fabricator of metals and alloys is the propensity of some composition ranges toward abnormal grain growth during certain stages of fabrication. In this respect magnesium alloys are no exception among alloys. Fortunately, convenient foundry control methods have been developed by which the abnormal grain growth possible in certain magnesium-alloy castings can be suppressed. An unusual characteristic of magnesium alloys, however, is that castings of some composition ranges are subject to local grain growth during heat-treatment without the necessity of intentional mechanical stressing of the part prior to heat-treatment. This effect occurs only under certain critical casting conditions, and only in certain alloys of greater than about 8.5 per cent aluminum content, such as C alloy (Mg, o per cent Al, 2 per cent Zn, 0.2 per cent Mn) and G alloy (Mg, i0 per cent Al, 0.2 per cent Mn). The first observation of this phenomenon in cast magnesium alloys occasioned much surprise, since it is not observed in other metals. Jeffries and Archer' have stated that "the grain size of cast metals, provided they have not been plastically deformed, cannot be changed by heating below the melting point." The study of the conditions leading to abnormal grain growth in cast magnesium alloys, and of the mechanism of this phenomenon, has led to some very interesting observations. Perhaps the most significant of these was the observation that stresses originating from cooling contraction in magnesium-alloy castings are the only stresses necessary, under certain conditions, to cause local recrystallization and subsequent grain growth in the casting during heat-treatment. of abnormal local grain growth was a definite problem in the production foundry on C alloy sand castings. Illustrated (Fig. r) is a picture of a casting scrapped because of this defect. A mottled effect is produced in coarse-grained areas by suitable etching solutions. The properties of metal in the affected area are much impaired by such grain coarsening. Ultimate tensile strengths of half the normal value have been measured in metal of this nature. In this paper are described the techniques that have been developed by The Dow Chemical Co. for studying, and in large measure solving, this production problem. Also discussed are studies of the mechanism by which excessive grain coarsening occurs, and the fundamental conditions that produce this effect. The abnormal grain growth discussed in this paper will be referred to as "germination," since this term has been defined' as any process leading to an abnormally coarse grain size. The carrier gas method was used to measure the vapor pressure of copper over liquid copper and Fe-Cu alloys. From these results, the activity of copper in the alloys was determined at 146°, 1550°, and 1600°C. Calculations of the activity of iron were made from the results for copper. The activities of copper and iron show strong positive deviations from Raoult's law. KNOWLEDGE of vapor pressures of liquid metals has both practical and theoretical value. Fuming of metal baths is directly related to vapor pressure, and the data should bc particularly important to the technology of vacuum metallurgy. Theoretical applications include determinations of heats of vaporization, heats of solution, and activity coefficients in alloys. Methods for measuring vapor pressures of metals have been reviewed by Speiser and Spretnak.' High-vacuum procedures, such as the Langmuir and Knudsen methods, have been used most widely in recent years. However, these methods are not applicable to vapor pressures greater than lo-' mm Hg and often cannot be used in the temperature range of greatest interest. The purpose of this investigation was to develop a procedure for measuring vapor pressures of pure metals and alloys that would be applicable to pressures greater than lo-' mm Hg. The transportation or carrier gas method has been used. Copper was chosen for the initial work because its vapor pressure has been established fairly well and the reliability of the technique could be ascertained. Applicability to alloys was studied by determining the vapor pressure of copper over liquid Fe-Cu alloys. Experimental Procedure The tests were carried out in a graphite-spiral resistance furnace. The charge consisted of 50 g of metal contajned in a covered sintered-alumina crucible 1/2 in. deep and 13/8 in. ID. Two sintered-alumina tubes led from outside the furnace to within the crucible, passing through close-fitting holes in the crucible cover and radiation shield. The arrangement of the crucible and the two alumina tubes is shown in Fig. 1. The small-bore tube (1/16 in. ID by 5/16 in. OD) served as the inlet for the carrier gas. The tip of this tube touched the metal surface and the flow of gas imparted a rippling motion to the metal. In this manner the gas was brought into close contact with the metal and became saturated with metal vapor. In most of the tests the flow rate of the carrier gas was 560 ml per min, measured at room temperature. Rolled sheet products are elastically anisotropic and a large number of measurements of Young's modulus and rigidity modulus are necessary to completely specify their elastic properties. This paper describes and uses a simple measurement technique to obtain the nine elements of the elastic modulus tensor from which all the elastic The elastic properties of a polycrystalline material are usually specified by giving the Young's modulus E and the rigidity modulus G. Unfortunately, these two moduli by themselves are insufficient to completely specify the elastic properties because the rolling process introduces a preferred orientation which makes the material properties can be deduced. In particular, the variation of Young's modulus and the rigidity modulus in the principal planes of a sheet of ausformed steel were deduced. Furthermore, the variation of Young's modulus in the rolling plane was compared with direct measurements. anisotropic. This anisotropy makes E and G functions of the orientation of the test specimen in the sheet so that a complete description of the elasticity requires many measurements on a large number of specimens. A more fundamental approach to the problem is to consider the sheet as a single crystal and measure the elements of its elastic modulus tensor. Although this appears formidable, there have been developed recently high-frequency ultrasonic techniques which yield these tensor elements directly. CHINA is one of the large producers of the world's tin. About 95 per cent of the total Chinese production comes from the Kotchiu district in the southern part of the province of Yunnan. Yunnan occupies the southwestern part of China, bordering on Burma,. Siam and. French Indo-China. From the British port of Hong Kong,' small steamers sail southwest at about four-day intervals, reaching Haiphong in French Indo-China in two or three days. This, one of the principal ports in Indo-China, is a modern French city of some 50,000 population which, with its tropical surroundings, has much natural beauty. It is a few miles from the sea on the Red River, which has its source in China. Both at Haiphong and Hanoi, the capital of Indo-China, sixty-three miles north of Haiphong and also on' the Red River, there are foundries, shipyards, machine shops, cement and brick plants and various similar industries.

A bentonite-clay drilling mud when treated with tetrasodium pyroarsenate underwent substantially the same reduction in viscosity and water loss as when treated with the complex phosphates. The complex arsenate showed a slightly higher reversion after heating; the other arsenates showed poor viscosity-reducing properties. Introduction During the past 10 years the chemical control of drilling mud has become of major importance in affecting the successful drilling and working over of wells. The desired properties of drilling mud have been well established, and in obtaining these characteristics there has developed a large market for viscosity-reducing chemicals. Viscosity reduction produced by humic acid, tannic acid, sodium silicate, sodium tannate, Calgon, and the complex phosphates has been described by Loomis, Ford, and Fidiam.l The effects Of treatment with complex phosphates and ammonium PolyPhosPhates on the rheological properties of muds were investigated by Fancher2 and the alkali vanadates have been described by Williams.3 Laboratory Investigations It is the purpose of this paper to point out the effects of arsenates in controlling the viscosity and gelling characteristics of a drilling mud. Viscosities and gel strengths were measured at room temperatures with a Stormer viscosimeter calibrated in centipoises and operated at 600 r.p.m. Water loss was determined at 80°F. with the Baroid low-pressure wall-building tester at a pressure of I00 lb. per sq. in. for 30 min. The hydrogen-ion concentration was measured with a glass electrode. The bentonite-clay suspensions were prepared in the laboratory and allowed to age several days before testing. Members of the Arsenic Group in the periodic Table include arsenic, antimony and bismuth, but this investigation was limited to arsenic. Phosphorus also occurs in Group V of the Periodic system and phosphorus and arsenic form many closely related compounds such as pH3 and AsH3, P2O5 and As2O5, H3PO4 and H3AS04 Samples of tetrasodium pyroarsenate were prepared by fusing c.p. disodium arsenate (Na2HA5O4.7H2O). According to Friend,' this re-forms the ortho-arsenate on dissolution in water. Sodium trihydrodiorthoarsenate was prepared as described by Mellor,5 from arsenic pen-toxide as follows: As2O5 + 3H20 -> 2H3AsO4 2H3AS04 + 3NaOH Na3H3(AsO4)2 .3H20 Sodium dihydrogen orthoarsenateWaHz-As04) was obtained by fusing together equivalent quantities of arsenious Oxide and sodium nitrate, dissolving the residue in water and allowing it to crystallize.
