Extremely difficult ground conditions were encountered in the main belt entry in a room and pillar mine in West Virginia. Several generations of supplemental support, including cable bolts, cribbing, and Heintzmann jacks and beams failed to halt roof falls that threatened workers safety and the life of the mine. Polyurethane (PUR) was injected into 27 intersections in the roof and the results were monitored by borehole video camera. The mine had averaged 2-3 falls in the beltway per year and, since the roof injection, no roof falls have occurred. Pre- and post injection monitoring of test holes showed that stability can be achieved without filling all of the existing void spaces. Video logging showed that the project goal of building a beam from 2-6 ft into the roof was successful. Pre-injection monitoring of roof fractures uphole can delineate the zones to target for reinforcement, and avoid pumping PUR into large voids to little effect. Multiple-¬injection zones can be identified, and the entire intersection drill hole array can be optimized based on knowledge of the fractured zones. In addition, pre-monitoring can prevent excessive hydrofracturing in solid zones. Polyurethane injection is a proven method of rock stabilization in even the weakest, most broken ground. Optimization of the injection design by pre-injection video diagnostics can greatly contribute to the successful and efficient roof stabilization.

"Coal mining in India has a strategic importance for the energy security of the country. Presently, the majority of coal production is coming from open-cast mining. Due to the fast depletion of reserves amenable to open-cast mining, future coal production will depend primarily on underground production. In conventional bard-and-pillar/room and pillar mining as it is practiced in India, the percentage of extraction is very low. In fact, within most Indian coalfields, a large number of coal seams extract only 15- 20% of coal, but no pillar extraction is done due to the presence of surface or sub-surface structures leading to huge amount of coal being locked-up in underground. Spontaneous heating and fire, the accumulation of poisonous gases, severe stability issues, unsafe workings and environmental hazards are all major problems associated with these developed coal pillars, so there is a pressing need for technology in the mining industry to extract this huge amount of coal locked up under different constraints. In this study, we propose that the locked-up coal be extracted by replacing the developed coal pillars with artificial pillars. The paper briefly discusses the extraction methodology designed for this and its evaluation through numerical modeling for applied suitability underground.INTRODUCTIONDriven by rising populations and urbanization, an expanding economy and also a quest for improved quality of life, energy usage in India is expected to increase manifold in the coming years. As for India's energy scenario and its projected future plans, there is no doubt that coal will remain a prime source of energy, even over the next few decades.The majority of coal production in India comes from open-cast mining because of large-scale mechanization, but the coal reserves amenable to open-cast mining are gradually depleting - which may impose adverse impacts on the energy sector if underground production does not increase. Underground coal extraction, meanwhile, is going to become more complicated in near future due to the fast exhaustion of easily mineable coal reserves."

"The design of underground coal mines requires a clear understanding of the overburden response, the loading of pillars, the loading of the gob, the pillar failure process, and the ultimate load carried by partly or fully yielding pillars. Very few highquality stress measurements of yielding pillars and gob loading have been made in full extraction mining. Well-calibrated numerical models can assist in providing a better understanding of the load and failure processes, provided the coal, the overburden, and the gob are all modeled with sufficient realism. A program of numerical model calibration and validation was carried out using FLAC3D.1 The models were calibrated against observed and measured performance of coal pillars and the overburden in operating mines to provide a basic set of input parameters that can be used to provide a realistic first estimate of expected ground response and pillar loading. Input parameters for modeling coal pillar response were based on data from triaxial testing on coal samples, combined with both matching the depth of failure in the coal ribs to observations as well as matching the peak pillar resistance to an empirical equation. The models were calibrated against strong roof and floor case histories in which the pillar strength is governed by failure and yielding of the coal within the pillar and the surrounding strata only had a limited impact on pillar strength. Input parameters for the overburden were determined from a large database of laboratory tests and model calibration against maximum subsidence and subsidence curvature. Further overburden calibration was carried out by matching stresses in the mining horizon to field measurements. Three examples of the application of the calibrated dataset and modeling methodology to field measurements are presented. The results show that a reasopable estimate of the in-seam stress distribution and overburden response can be obtained for both strong and weak overburden scenarios at various depths of cover.INTRODUCTIONThe planning and design of coal mine excavations requires reliable estimates of the expected strength and loading of the mine structures to achieve global stability. Empirical methods are widely used to estimate the strength and loading of coal pillars and have been incorporated into pillar design procedures, such as Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) (Mark, 1987) and Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) (Mark and Chase, 1997), that are widely used in the United States. ~umerical models are finding increasing application as a tool for underground mine design because of their. versatility and the ever increasing computational power available to mine designers. A prerequisite for the application of numerical models is the calibration of the models against observed rock mass response (Hoek et al., 1990; Skiles and Stricklin, 2009). The calibration process may include comparison of model results to measured stress and deformation and modifying the input parameters in a systematic manner to achieve a satisfactory agreement between the model results and measurements. Once models have been calibrated, they can be applied to evaluating similar mining layouts in similar geological conditions."

Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINE TAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress¬strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory¬scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle (0) for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and 0 values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

"Coal and gas outburst is an extremely complex dynamic disaster in coal mine production process which will damage casualties, equipment facilities and disorder the ventilation system by suddenly ejecting a great amount of coal and gas into roadway or working face. This paper analyzed the interaction among the three essential elements of coal and gas outburst dynamic system. A stress-seepage-damage coupling model was established which can be used to simulate the evolution of the dynamical system, and then the size scale of coal and gas outburst dynamical system was investigated. Results show that the dynamical system is consisted of three essential elements, coal-gas medium (material basis), geology dynamic environment (internal motivation) and mining disturbance (external motivation). On the case of C13 coal seam in Panyi mine, the dynamical system exists in the range of 8-12 m in front of advancing face. The size scale will be larger where there are large geologic structures. This research plays an important guiding role for developing measures of coal and gas outburst prediction and prevention. INTRODUCTIONCoal and gas outbursts are a complicated mine gas dynamic phenomenon that pose a serious threat to coal mine safety production. Since the first recorded coal and gas outburst occurring in Isaac coal mine of the Lule coal field in 1843, more than 40,000 outbursts have occurred in the world. China ranks first in outburst frequency and intensity. In recent 20 years, China on average increases 37 pairs of coal mines and more than 280 times outburst accidents every year (Yan, 2013). The coal and gas outburst occurred on Oct 20, 2004 in Daping Coal Mine, Zhengzhou Coal Group, caused serious gas explosions and ejected 1,894 tons of coal into the face, causing 148 fatalities. In recent years, despite implementation of numerous control measures, coal and gas outburst still occur frequently ash mining depth and mining intensity increase. The outburst mechanisms can be summarized in the following four aspects: the gas leading role hypothesis, the geostress leading role hypothesis, the chemical effect hypothesis, and combination hypothesis. The last hypothesis has won the acceptance of most scholars who consider that an outburst is the result of combined effect of stress, gas and coal (Yu, 1992).Numerous experimental measurements and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the permeability and damage development process in coal seam. Sobczyk, et al (2011) carried out a laboratory research of the influence of sorption processes on gas stresses leading to coal and gas outbursts. Wang, et al (2013, 2015) conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the rapid decompression and desorption induced energetic failure in coal using a shock tube apparatus. Xu, et al (2006) developed a coupled gas flow and solid deformation numerical model and applied to simulate the coal and gas outbursts in underground coal mines using RFPA2D-Gasflow. An, et al (2013) and Xue (2014) analyzed major parameters and the effect of gas desorption on outburst initiation and established a model of gas migration and mechanical processes during excavation."

The distribution of front abutment pressure is closely related to the force, deformation and energy distribution of hard roof before periodic weighting. So it is necessary to carry out research on the relationship between them. According to front abutment pressure distribution feature, using the location of peak front abutment pressure as the dividing point, coal seam is divided into two parts along the direction of mining: the yield zone that is the area between the faceline and the point where the maximum front abutment pressure occurs, and the elastic zone that is the part before the point of peak front abutment pressure. The proposed mechanical model of unit width hard roof at the panel center periodic weighting consists of five parts including the yield zone. All parameters of the deflection equations for each of the five parts that satisfy the continuity conditions and natural boundary conditions are obtained by using the Matlab software. The continuous curves of front abutment pressure, deflection, bending moment and bending strain energy density distribution of hard roof are obtained by iterative approximation method. The following conclusions can be drawn through analyzing those curves: (1) The position of peak front abutment pressure is located at the transition of coal seam foundation from yield zone to elastic zone (elastoyield critical point), the distance of it to the faceline is equal to the width of yield zone. The peak front abutment pressure increases with yield zone with. (2) The peak bending moment in front of the faceline, and the distance of it to the faceline increase with the yield zone width. The deflection of hard roof at the face and midspan also increase with yield zone width. (3) As the yield zone width increases, the accumulated elastic energy of hard roof in front of the faceline increases, and the core zone of energy moves forward away from the face. (4) When the yield zone width is zero, the whole coal foundation is regarded as elastic foundation, and the peak front abutment pressure occurs at the faceline.

"A numerical-model-based approach was recently developed for estimating the changes in both the horizontal and vertical loading conditions induced by an approaching longwall face. In this approach, a systematic procedure is used to estimate the model inputs. Shearing along the bedding planes is modeled with ubiquitous joint elements and interface elements. Coal is modeled with a newly developed coal mass model. The response of the gob is calibrated with back analysis of subsidence data and the results of previously published laboratory tests on rock fragments. The model results have been verified with the subsidence and stress data recently collected from a longwall mine in the eastern United States. INTRODUCTION In 2015, there were 40 longwall mines operating in the United States, each producing an average of 4.5 million tons of coal per year, and they supplied 60% of the U.S. underground coal production. This represents a substantial increase from 50% three years earlier (Sears, Tulu, and Esterhuizen, 2017). During this period, reportable roof fall rates in U.S. longwall mines also increased. Large roof falls that can block the gateroads are not only a ground-fall hazard, they can disrupt the ventilation system, block the escapeways, and increase the potential for elevated methane levels in the gob. To address these hazards, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) is conducting research to improve the design of ground control systems in longwall gateroads. Gateroad stability is primarily determined by the longwall pillar design. Generally, the required dimensions of the pillars around a longwall panel are determined first, which then dictates the location of the gate entries relative to the mined panel. The Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) method is the most accepted gateroad pillar design procedure in the United States (Mark, 1992). The ALPS method accounts for local roof geology in the gateroad stability assessment by including the Coal Mine Roof Rating as an input parameter (Mark, 1992). The key assumption in the ALPS method is that unstable pillars result in unstable gate entries. However, experience provides examples of mines where pillar stability and gateroad stability are only loosely correlated (Su, Draskovich, and Thomas, 2003)."

On August 6, 2007, the Crandall Canyon Mine experienced a collapse which trapped six mine-workers. An MW 4.1 seismic event was recorded in conjunction with this collapse. An additional 54 seismic events were detected and located in the vicinity via routine processing techniques during the month of the collapse. Waveformbased cross-correlation detection techniques have been used to uncover 1,328 small, previously undetected seismic events which occurred near the collapse area between July 26 and August 9, 2007. This work has resulted in lowering the magnitude threshold of completeness from ML 1.6 to ML -0.5, a 2.1 order-of-magnitude improvement over standard processing techniques. Event locations have been computed using a double-difference inversion. The spatial pattern of events ultimately helps to delineate the extent of the collapsed area. It is shown that many of the large catalogued events (>ML1.6) tend to be closely followed by numerous (often 20 or more) smaller aftershocks. Cluster analysis of the known catalog reinforces prior work indicating the existence of seismic clustering on the east and west sides of the collapse. Research now demonstrates that it is possible to differentiate events related to the main collapse from those related to the rescue attempt following the collapse. The cross-correlation techniques described herein greatly improve the ability to detect small mining-induced seismic events. These methods may lead to improvements in assessing seismic hazards for conditions similar to those observed at Crandall Canyon preceding the collapse.

In 1991, roofbolts were introduced as a primary support for inseam retreat longwall entries at CBDC's Phalen Colliery. Increasing mine depth (+550 m) necessitated replacing conventional inseam steel sets in these entries because they were being severely damaged during wall retreat and subsequently causing gate end problems. Roofbolts had been used in the Sydney coalfield between 1949 and 1963 in room and pillar working, however, some concerns arose with using roofbolts as a primary support in long (2.2 - 3.4 km) single entry roadways. In order to alleviate these concerns, a phased approach was adopted whereby conventional steel densities remained along with roofbolts. The roofbolt design was such that the roofbolts would be the primary support and the steel sets would experience little or no loading. A detailed geotechnical monitoring program was developed by both CBDC and the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratories technical staffs. The results of this monitoring were used to build-up confidence in roofbolts and subsequently reduce the steel set densities until eventually only roofbolts were used as a primary support. This paper will discuss briefly the phased introduction of rootbolts at Phalen Colliery and more specifically the development of geotechnical data collection and interpretation.

"Indonesia is the second largest coal exporter to Japan. Almost all the coal is produced from open cut mines. However, a great deal of coal is left in the highwalls of the mined-out pits. The use of highwall mining systems has increasingly come into play in the U.S. and Australia, when overburden depth exceeds economical recovery in an open cut mine. However, the stability of the highwalls is always a major safety concern in such mining. This paper describes the characteristics of the highwall mining system and discusses the appropriate highwall mining system for use in Indonesia.INTRODUCTIONIndonesia produces over 200 Mt of clean coal and is the second largest coal exporter to Japan, accounting for about 32 Mt of coal annually. Over 99% of the coal produced in Indonesia comes from surface mines. More open cut mines will be developed and more coal will be mined in order to fill the great demand both in Indonesia and the rest of the world.In open cut mines in Indonesia, there are many sites where mining operations have developed long highwalls that have been abandoned due to the current economics. Mining operations have been transferred to lower stripping ratio blocks of coal or overlying seams. In some cases, coal lies buried beneath spoil heaps or is covered with mud and water. It is estimated that there is a great deal of coal beneath abandoned and working highwalls. Considering these situations, it seems to be worth introducing highwall mining systems into Indonesian open cut mines.Final highwalls of open cut mines can form the starting point for other mining methods, such as highwall or underground mining. In its basic application, highwall mining is a technique utilized after an open cut portion of a reserve has been mined, sometimes prior to the introduction of underground mining (Seib, 1993). In this system, the coal seam is mined by remotely operated equipment, such as an auger machine or a modified continuous miner incorporated into a highwall mining system. The major problems with highwall mining systems are less coal recovery due to leaving coal as the pillars and the instability of openings and highwalls due to the pillar and roof failures."

The Monroe County Quarry is an open pit granite quarry located near the town of Bolingbroke. Monroe County. Georgia. The quarry has been in continuous operation for approximately 10 years. The quarry covers approximately 27 acres and has an annual production rate of 1.0 million tons. On the morning of April 26. 2000 a sudden rapid highwall failure occurred at the west end of the north wall of the quarry pit. The failure occurred approximately one hour after a three inch-wide crack was observed in an access road located at the crest of the highwall. No indications of failure had been observed prior to the development of the crack. The active mining area had been at the base of the failed area. The pit was successfully evacuated prior to the failure and there were no losses of either personnel or equipment. The amount of failed material was estimated to be in excess of two million tons. In order to ensure a safe working environment at the quarry a slope monitoring program was established in the area of the failure. The program consisted of using an EDM survey instrument to periodically measure the location of survey prisms installed at carious points on the north wall. The locations of the prisms were recorded over several months and changes in location were analyzed in order to identify and characterize the movement of the failed mass. The results of the analysis provided a basis for recommendations regarding access to various areas of the quarry. This paper discusses the factors contributing to the failure, the method of post-failure slope monitoring, anti the interpretation of the monitoring data.

"Self-drilling rock bolts (SDRBs) that use pumpable cement grout to anchor bolts have been used successfully in the tunnelling and civil engineering industries for many years. Pumpable cement grout offers a considerable advantage in that the SDRB can be fully encapsulated right down to the bearing plate, including filling cracks and cavities in the borehole. However, cement grout cannot provide the immediate rock support required for the coal industry. This paper describes a new SDRB system that uses pumpable resin to anchor the SDRB in a borehole, which not only provides all the advantages of a pumpable grout anchoring system, but also provides immediate roof and rib support as required in the coal industry. This paper further outlines the latest developments in SDRB technology including (1) extendable self-drilling rock bolts, which can almost double in length during the installation process and are particularly suited to low seam heights and rib support and (2) pre-tensioned SDRBs, where a pre-tensioned load can be applied during the installation process. These new SDRB systems offer both considerable advantages in rock support and improvements in mining productivity.INTRODUCTIONThe mining industry is continually striving to develop more efficient methods to support the roof and walls of roadways and tunnels, and rock bolting has proven to be one of the most significant improvements in ground support over the last 50 years. Rock bolting is now almost universally used in the underground mining industry worldwide, and there are many different rock bolts available.Rock bolts are traditionally made from steel or fiberglass and are anchored into a borehole with a friction-anchoring device, such as an expansion shell mechanism; cement grout; or chemical resin. Friction-anchored bolts are widely used in the Australian metal mining industry, predominantly as short-term support. They are used in conjunction with resin-anchored bolts where there is a requirement for longer life. Resin-anchored bolts are used in the coal mining industry.Friction-anchored bolts provide immediate rock support, but their load transfer capacity is poor compared to resin or cement anchored bolts. In addition, friction-anchored bolts are more susceptible to corrosion than resin or cement anchored bolts."

A close look at the Loyalhanna Limestone of southwestern Pennsylvania reveals a complex structural environment. Most exposures of the Loyalhanna occur along Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Hill within the Allegheny Mountain Section of the Appalachian Plateaus Province. Because the Loyalhanna is rated as a super pavement aggregate by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and because of its proximity to the population centers of southwestern Pennsylvania, the Loyalhanna has been extensively mined along these prominent anticlinal structures. Geologic and engineering analyses were performed using gas well and core logs, outcrop examinations, underground observations, and mine maps. Strata exposures from both outcrops and quarries were used to construct geologic maps, stereonet, and rose diagram projections so that the Loyalhanna's structural environment could be understood better. Many of these structural conditions cause ground control problems at local quarries. These problems ranged from small-to-moderate sized rock falls associated with roof jointing to pillar failures associated with dipping discontinuities. Stresses ranged from tensional on structural domes where weathering dominates, to high levels of compression within structural saddles. A greater understanding of these characteristics is a prerequisite to develop engineering controls, such as improved mine layouts. pillar sizes, etc., that lessen miner exposure to these hazards.

"As a highly efficient and new surveying and mapping technique, 3D laser scanning technology has been gradually applied to surface subsidence monitoring in mining areas. 3D laser scanning technology was used to monitor the mining subsidence in a coal mining area in this paper. Based on the 3D laser scanning data obtained in March, May, and December 2016 in the studying mining area, the surface subsidence basin and points deformation were acquired. The 3D laser scanning data were compared with that of the conventional surface movement surveying method. The results show that the 3D laser scanning technology could obtain the data of the subsidence basin more efficiently and reflect the true shape of surface subsidence caused by mining. The maximum surface subsidence obtained by 3D laser scanning technology was 3.60m, while the conventional surface movement surveying was 3.56m; the relative observation error between 3D laser scanner and the conventional surface movement surveying was less than 10%. Therefore, it is feasible to apply 3D laser scanning technology to monitor surface subsidence in coal mines.INTRODUCTIONWith the over-exploitation of coal resources, the problem of surface subsidence has become the focus of attention (Peng, 2011; Guo Wenbing, 2012). Setting up observation stations for surface movement was the traditional method to study the characteristic of surface subsidence and its parameters. At present, hundreds of observation stations have been set up in longwall mining, and a large number of measured data have been obtained (Ministry, 2017). However, due to the length of time surveying requires, great workload in the field, the high cost of observation, and difficult protection for monitoring points, conventional observation stations for surface movement have not met the research on surface subsidence. Therefore, as a new surveying and mapping technique, 3D laser scanning technology has been gradually used for surface subsidence monitoring in mining areas (Ma Liguang, 2005). Li Qiu, Qin Yongzhi, and Li Hong (2006) first proposed 3D laser scanning technology in the application of monitoring surface subsidence in 2006. It was showed that the 3D laser scanning technology had obvious advantages in efficiency and accuracy of data acquisition than other methods of deformation monitoring technology of surface subsidence (such as total station, precision level technique, GPS, etc.). Subsequently, Zhang Shu, Wu Kan, and Wang Xiang (2008) and Chen Ranli and Wu Kan (2012) analyzed the feasibility and precision of 3D laser scanning in subsidence monitoring, concluding that the 3D laser scanning can be used to obtain the subsidence basin and the monitoring precision can reach millimeter. Hu Dahe, Wu Kan, and Chen Ranli (2013) introduced the data processing method of 3D laser scanning for surface subsidence in detail. On the basis of a case study, the subsidence basin in subsidence area was obtained, which reflected the shape of mining subsidence basin intuitively and comprehensively. Wang Qisheng, Wu Kan, and Zheng Ruyu (2010) carried out the research on prediction parameters of mining subsidence by using 3D laser scanning data and got the parameters of major influence angle and the offset distance of inflection point. Meng Wanli, Cai Lailiang, and Yang Wangshan. (2017) made a profile analysis for the 3D view of the surface subsidence using 3D laser scanning data and put forward a “Geomagic” method of surface subsidence prediction."

"Abutment pressure distribution is different when a longwall panel is passing through the abandoned gateroads in a damaged coal seam. According to the geological conditon of panel E13103 in Cuijiazhai Coal Mine in China theoretical analysis and finite element numerical simulation were used to determine the front pressure distribution characteristics when the longwall face is 70 m, 50 m, 30 m, 20 m, 10 m, and 5 m from the abandoned gateroads. The research results show that the influence range of abutment pressure is 40 m to 45 m outby the face, and the peak value of front abutment pressure is related to the distance between the face and abandoned gateroads. When the distance between the longwall face and abandoned gateroads is reduced from 50 m to 10 m, the front abutment pressure peak value kept increasing.When the distance is 10 m, it has reached the maximum. The peak value is located in 5 to 6 m outby the faceline. When the distance between the longwall face and abandoned gateroads is reduced from10 m to 5 m, the front abutment pressure sharply decreases, the intact coal yields and is even in plastic state. The peak value transfers to the other side of the abandoned gateroads. The research results provide a theoretical basis for determining the advance support distance of two gateroads in the panel and the reinforcement for face stability when the longwall face is passing through the abandoned gateroads.INTRODUCTIONFront abutment pressure is the result of rearrangement of in situ rock stress caused by the mining (removal) of the coal seam. Research on the distribution character of face abutment pressure have significant importance in confirming the width of the coal pillar and the distance of advance support in roadways (Liu et al., 2011; Liu, Jiang, and Zhu, 2015). Currently, there is a lot of research on abutment pressure characteristics of traditional longwall coal faces, thick coal seam longwall faces, isolated faces, and extra wide face abutment pressure distribution (Xie et al., 2006). However, theoretical analysis and research on the distribution law of the fully mechanized coal face to abandoned gateroads are relatively less. Abandoned roadways are often from less mechanized or room and pillar mines. Due to the existence of these roadways pre-longwall mining, the in situ stress has already been redistributed around the roadway (Liu et al., 2007). Thus, when the longwall approaches and mines through the roadway, the abutment pressure distribution behaviour has different characteristics than those of traditional solid undisturbed coal. Especially when the face approaches the abandoned roadway, the understanding of face abutment pressure distribution has significant importance to the timing of support installation (Ren and Ning, 2014). This prevents the occurrence of a roof and rib failure ahead of and on the longwall and highly efficient advance of the longwall safely and productivity. This paper analyses the E13103 face of the Cuijiazhai Mine of Wenzhou Mining Co., Ltd of Kailuan Group, as the engineering case study, and uses FLAC3D numerical simulation software to conduct numerical simulated analysis on the abutment pressure distribution mechanism of longwall coal mining face."

"Geological factors and mine design contribute to mining-induced seismic activity, and this is especially true in longwall mining. Massive rock units are a key cause of seismic activity due to catastrophic failures that release large amounts of energy. Other factors, such as overburden depth, panel design, pillar design, rock strength, and proximity of the massive rock unit to the coal seam, all have a role in the potential and size of a seismic event. A recent seismic event was recorded by a deep longwall mine in Virginia at 3.7ML on the local magnitude scale and 3.4 MMS by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in July 2016, which had no impact on the mining operations. Further investigations by NIOSH and Coronado Coal researchers have shown that this event was associated with geological features that have also been associated with other, similar seismic events in Virginia. Detailed mapping and geological exploration in the mining area has made it possible to forecast possible locations for future seismic activity. In order to use the geology as a forecaster of mining-induced seismic events and the energy potential, two primary components are needed. The first component is a long history of recorded seismic events with accurately plotted locations. The second component is a high density of geologic data within the mining area. In this case, 181 events of 1.0ML or greater were recorded by the mine’s seismic network between January, 2009, and October, 2016. Within the mining area, 897 geophysical logs were analyzed from gas wells, 224 core holes were drilled and logged, and 1,031 fiberscope holes were examined by mine geologists. From this information, it was found that overburden thickness, sandstone thickness, and sandstone quality contributed greatly to seismic locations. After analyzing the data, a pattern became apparent indicating that the majority of seismic events occurred under specific conditions. Three maps were created using MineScape geological mapping software. MineScape deploys an interpolator known as FEM (finite element method) and is based on a series of gridded triangles to forecast the probability and magnitude of an event if a particular panel were to be mined. The forecast maps have shown accuracy of within 74%–89% when compared to the recorded 181 events that were 1.0 ML or greater when considering three major geological criteria of overburden thickness of 1900 feet or greater, 20 to 40 feet of sandstone within 50 feet of the Pocahontas number 3 seam, and a longwall caving height of 15 feet or less."

"Roof falls in longwall headgate can occur when weak roof and high horizontal stress are present. To prevent roof falls in the headgate under high horizontal stress, it is important to understand the ground response to high horizontal stress in the longwall headgate and the requirements for supplemental roof support. In this study, a longwall headgate under high horizontal stress was instrumented to monitor stress change in the pillars, deformations in the roof, and load in the cable bolts. The conditions in the headgate were monitored for about six months as the longwall face passed by the instrumented site. The roof behavior in the headgate near the face was carefully observed during longwall retreat. Numerical modeling was performed to correlate the modeling results with underground observation and instrumentation data and to quantify the effect of high horizontal stress on roof stability in the longwall headgate. This paper discusses roof support requirements in the longwall headgate under high horizontal stress in regard to the pattern of supplemental cable bolts and the critical locations where additional supplemental support is necessary.INTRODUCTIONLongwall mining is the primary underground coal mining method in the United States and currently accounts for more than 60% of the underground coal production. The longwall headgate, as a passageway for the longwall crew, intake air, material supplies, and coal belt transportation, is critical for both safety and continuous production of the longwall panel. A roof fall in the longwall headgate would not only result in substantial interruption of production but could potentially cause injuries or fatalities. Rehabilitation of failed roof in the headgate would also expose miners to the risk of injuries. Roof falls in the headgate, though infrequent, mostly occur in the belt entry near the face. Considerable research has been conducted to determine the effects of various factors on headgate roof stability, as well as effective measures to support the roof in longwall mines in the Pittsburgh seam (Mark, Mucho, and Dolinar, 1998; Chen et al., 1998; Su and Hasenfus, 1995; Su, Thomas, and Hasenfus, 1999; Su, Morris, and McCaffrey, 2002; Su, Draskovich, and Thomas, 2003; Hasenfus and Su, 2006; Van Dyke et al., 2015). Previous studies have demonstrated that high horizontal stress and transitional roof geology are primary factors that cause headgate roof failure. These studies also showed that panel orientation, retreat direction, pillar sizes, and roof support played an important role in the stability of a headgate.In underground coal mines located in the eastern United States, the magnitude of the maximum horizontal stress is typically three times greater than the vertical stress, and about 40% greater than the minimum horizontal stress. Mark, Mucho, and Dolinar (1998) studied seven cases of headgate failures caused by high horizontal stress in different coal seams in the United States and stated that roof stability is affected, to a large extent, by rock type, entry orientation, and longwall orientation. The effects of horizontal stress can be summarized in these statements: (1) A laminated roof is very vulnerable to high horizontal stress. (2) Entries that are aligned with the maximum horizontal stress will suffer less damage on development than those perpendicular to it. (3) Horizontal stress concentration and relief depends on panel orientation, the direction of retreat, and the sequence of longwall panel extraction."

Rockburst conditions were first encountered at Inco's Sudbury area operations in the mid 1930's when mining advanced to below the 610 m (2000 ft.) horizon. Now, mining is being carried out at depths down to 2130 m (7000 ft.) at Inco'a Creighton Mine. While rockburst potentials have increased with depth. improvements in mine planning, methods, support systems and developments in destressing have alleviated the condition to where it is less of a problem now than it was in the early years. Hang of the improvements were developed, of necessity. through observation and reasoning because these were the only tools available at the time. Now, we are making use of stress - measurements, numerical modelling and microseismic source location technology to - help further reduce rockburat hazards.

Longwall mining and pipelines have coexisted since longwall mining was introduced into the United States. How the pipeline operator reacts to longwall mining under their line depends on many factors. This paper outlines the process the pipeline operator goes through to determine the appropriate response when their pipeline is being undermined. Typical mitigation procedures are reviewed. Finally, the paper looks at current design practices for new pipelines that are expected to be undermined during their lifetime.
