Communications in whatever we do, is one of the major problems we encounter. In an effort to provide a better understanding of the use of explosives, I am going to take a little different view of what explosives are, and how you might look at them as tools to fragment rock, and some of the problems encountered in doing so. First, let's take the explosive, and although there are many factors involved, I want you to consider these as being reduced to only two--shock strain imparted to the rock by the high early development of energy; and the other, the gas effect which is a combination of heat, moles of gas formed, rate of formation of these gases which develop pressures, etc..

In the design and specification of a ventilation system for an underground mine, it is necessary to make reasonably accurate estimates of the pressure losses in the various airways of the mine. These estimates can be made with little difficulty for open airways with simple geometric cross-sections, such as those cut by continuous miners or tunnel-boring machines. The situation is much different on a longwall face, where the airway's complex geometric cross-section and the presence in the airway of obstructing equipment having a variety of shapes make it difficult, if not impossible, to estimate pressure loss using traditional methods of calculation. Direct force measurements were conducted using an atomic force microscope (AFM) to study the mechanism of copper-activation of sphalerite. The force measurements were conducted between a sphalerite plate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in xanthate solutions of various pHs. The glass sphere may represent the hydrophobic air bubbles interacting with minerals during flotation. The force measurements conducted with unactivated sphalerite in 10') M KEX solutions did not show the presence of hydrophobic force. On the other hand, the results obtained with copper-activated sphalerite at pH 9.2 and 4.6 showed strong hydrophobic forces. However, the results obtained at pH 6.8 showed no evidence of hydrophobic force, which provides an explanation for the difficulty in floating sphalerite at neutral pH.

This paper discusses a series of tests designed to help answer the age old question: ?How much does the belt cleaner wear my belt?? The experimental set up and test method are described. The main variables are: belt cleaner blade materials, cleaning pressures, cleaning angles, belt speeds, and belt top cover grade. The bulk material used is a standard test-grade silica sand. The measured results include: blade mass loss, belt mass loss, and cleaning efficiency.

Strain burst can occur in underground hard rock excavation when the in-situ stresses are high enough. The prerequisite for rock burst is that the total energy released from the rock mass is higher than the energy needed for rock fracture. The total released energy is contributed by both the burst rock and the surrounding rock. The part of the energy from the burst rock is constant per unit volume of the rock, but the part from the surrounding rock is associated with the burst volume. A greater amount of energy will be released from the surrounding rock in the case of a larger volume of burst rock. The postulation for the energy conversion in strain burst is verified through a FLAC3D model in the paper. It is assumed that the strain burst occurs in a circular tunnel that is located in the hydrostatically loaded rock mass in the model. Six pairs of notches with different depths are created in the opposite walls of the tunnel to simulate the bursts. The energies released from the notch rocks and from the surrounding rock are calculated during the burst. The simulation results show that the percentage of the energy released from the surrounding rock in the total released energy increases with the notch depth. The numerical modelling confirms the postulation that the surrounding rock contributes more energy than the burst rock itself in large-scale strain bursts

The paper describes a technique by which large concrete boxes are unobtrusively inserted beneath existing highway and railway infrastructure to form new subways, culverts and under-bridges, thus avoiding the inconvenience and costs of disruption to traffic associated with traditional cut and cover techniques. A series of project examples, undertaken in the United Kingdom and United States, are used to illustrate the design and construction of the box structures, together with the technology required to control ground disturbance in the tunnel face and around the box, and the jacking systems necessary for box installation.

ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. The blasting parameters and characteristic elements that had been evaluated, the measures that had been taken and materialized, the overall risk management and the results of the whole program are presented in this paper.

Many processing techniques have existed for thousands of years. For example, Georgius Agricola, in De Re Metallica (1556), described equipment and techniques, such as picking tables, smelting furnaces and cupolas of various types, sieves, launders. various types of crushers and grinders and other equipment, all still in use in one form or another. In translating Agricola's work into English, the late Herbert C. and Lou Hoover provided the following summary indicating the early history of particular mineral- processing operations :

Oil and gas together are the most important energy sources consumed in the United States. In 1983, 67% of total energy consumption was represented by these two resources (43% was oil and 25% natural gas), while coal accounted for only 23% of U.S. energy use. All other sources (hydroelectric, nuclear, geothermal, wood and other waste products) accounted for only 10% (U.S. Department of Energy, 1983, p. 1). In this chapter we address the issue of regulation in the oil and natural gas sectors of the U.S. energy industry. In addition, we analyze the cartel characteristics of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). If OPEC is an effective cartel, then U.S. oil as well as substitute energy prices, production, and consumption will be affected by cartel action. Further, as the nation learned in the 1970s, major changes in oil prices produced major disturbances in other sectors of the U.S. and world economies. Consequently, it is important to determine whether the roughly ten-fold increase in nominal prices that occurred in the 1970s was the result of cartel action, the result of normal economic forces adjusting to the fact that the world was running out of cheap oil, or some combination of the two. Furthermore, the presence of OPEC- associated oil price increases is related to regulations that were imposed on the energy sector during the decade of the 70s. THE RATIONALE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION Economists have traditionally judged the state of an economy to be efficient if it is impossible to improve the welfare of any one member of society without harming someone else. Any economy that satisfies this condition is said to be Pareto efficient, after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who first gave rigorous attention to such questions (see Chapter 4.10). It is easy to see why an economy that fails to satisfy this condition could not be efficient; by definition, it would be possible to alter the allocation of resources in a way that improves everyone's welfare.' Much of the appeal of this weak efficiency criterion is that it avoids comparisons of levels of well being among different individuals. The cost of such generality, however, is that in any given economic system a wide array of different Pareto efficient states will typically be attainable. In the simple Robinson Cursoe economy of the undergraduate textbook, for example, efficiency could just as easily be attained in the case where most of the island's resources are owned by Friday as in the case where they are under Crusoe's control. However, the distribution of welfare among the two inhabitants would obviously be quite different in the two situations. Such equity issues cannot be settled on objective or scientific grounds. To decide which distribution of welfare is socially "best" an explicit value judgment is needed. It is useful to keep in mind the preceding distinction between efficiency and equity issues when analyzing the role of government in a market economy. Decentralized market processes will not necessarily result in a distribution of welfare that society considers just. The following paper summarizes our observations on building response to mine subsidence and techniques for mitigation of building damage. The subsidence cases are located in Illinois. The general description of the geologic and mine conditions are primarily for those sites. Data on building response and mitigation measures were collected under grants supported by the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council (AMLRC) of Illinois and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in Twin Cities, Minnesota. Case histories include pit and sag subsidence primarily beneath abandoned room and pillar mines. The majority of the paper deals with structures affected by sag subsidence. Most of the structures are one and two story homes. The first section of the paper summarizes the typical geologic and mining conditions at the sites. Building response to pit and sag subsidence follows the first section. Emphasis is placed on the behavior of concrete and masonry foundations, and wood frame and masonry superstructures. The third section describes mitigation techniques used to prevent or minimize building damage. A summary of the observations and critical parameters is given at the end of the paper.

The close-multiple coal seam is an important component of China’s coal resources and plays a key role in total coal reserves. However, the overburden movement in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams is usually extensive, which is seriously affected by overmining. It is therefore essential to study the mechanism of roof breakage, the relationship between the shield and the surrounding rock, and the mechanism of overburden movement to ensure the safe operation and the efficient exploitation of close-multiple coal seams. This work first proposes a technical route for intelligent ground control. Second, the principle of cooperative control between the shield and overburden roof is revealed, and the shield support capacity calculation method is summarized. Third, the quantitative criterion for disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD) is proposed based on the key strata theory. Finally, several intelligent evaluation and analysis systems have been developed in terms of overburden breakage and shield support capacity, multi-information analysis of ground control, and disturbance degree of overburden. The research results may provide an essential reference for the development of intelligent ground control in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams

Before we can attempt to answer the question of what can be expected from coal research, let us examine why research is done in other fields and what others expect for the money they spend on research and development. Up to 1900 almost all organized research was carried out at universities. Most of the support came from the university, and by present standards the amount of research was extremely small. The motivation for university research was basically discovery of new phenomena, with the objective of advancing knowledge. Side by, side with this organized effort was that of individual inventors who were primarily responsible for applying this new-found knowledge to useful purposes. During this period inventors were rarely supported by anyone, and experimentation was carried out either in their spare time or at the expense of earning a living. Men like Edison, I believe, were the first to demonstrate on a large scale that one could systematically apply newly discovered scientific principles to inventions that would serve useful purposes and would return a profit to those engaged in the effort. The tremendous expansion in research therefore began with the realization and demonstration that the scientific discovered could be applied in such a way as to return a' handsome profit to those who invested in it. The motivation of many of the research personnel however, remained the satisfaction associated with new discoveries, The money to support their efforts came from those interested in a return on their investments. Since the First World War and a rapidly accelerating rate since the Second World War another important motive for supporting research has appeared--the needs associated with national defense; this type of research has been supported almost exclusively by the Government.

Iran was a lodestone for the attention of industrial countries and companies wanting to share in its industrial development during the last two decades and particularly after 1972. Prior to 1972, most industrial projects in the private sector were on a relatively small scale and could be carried out in reasonably orderly fashion in spite of limitations of a primitive infrastructure and meager indigenous supply of managerial and technical skills. People with these skills could be found but not in abundance, and many of them were total¬ly engaged in various government ministries and projects. Thus it was that nearly all private sector industries, even long-established ones, required one or more foreigners to give guidance. A barite mine and processing facility was brought on line by Dresser Industries in 1960 without serious operational problems. A few expatriate experts were able to select and train a stable group of staff and production people and establish sound management principles for continued growth. The huge and increasing oil revenues after 1973 gave superficial credence to ideas of the Iranian government that the country could easily finance the jump into the industrial 20th century. All necessary skills and equipment not available in Iran would be imported, and intensive training programs would prepare Iranians for operating the new facilities. Large projects for steel production, copper production, oil refining, petrochemical production, cement production, and others were started or expanded. These are basic industries that consume substantial quantities of refractories. Studies made in 1972 indicated that the existing industries plus expanded and new projects scheduled to come into production would lead to a market sufficiently large to justify a refractory producing plant. Concurrent studies of raw material sources showed that clay, the largest tonnage item, would be locally available; the other raw materials would be imported. Iran Refractories Company (IREFCO) was founded in 1973 and started production in 1976.

Up to the middle of 19 14, when I had reached what seemed like the advanced age of 30, I had enjoyed far more than my share of success and a lot of minor adventure. But the exciting experiences in distant lands that Soldiers of Fortune had made me long for had not yet materialized. And I had not accomplished the two goals that Mrs. Hughes' geography class at Belmont had set up for me. They were to see In its tropical home the enormous yellow bill of the toucan bird and to ride on a straw "bolsa" on Lake Titicaca. These aims were gratified In the next five years that were the epitome of "romance" in its German connotation of facts seen through the rosy glasses of imagination. Dr. Louis Ricketts was to a large extent responsible for my opportunity. I had been lucky enough to do a lot of work for and with the Doctor, as he was affectionately called by the mining men of the southwest. My association was in connection with his work with John Greenway on the complex metallurgical problems at Ajo. Soon after the Ajo investigation Ricketts had been made chief consultant for the Anaconda Copper Co. When Anaconda decided to undertake a cam- paign of exploration of the west coast of South America Dr. Ricketts thought of me and arranged with Greenway to give me a leave of absence from my Calumet and Arizona job. It took three days in New York in June 1914 to arrange the expedition. Ben Thayer, executive vice president of Anaconda, did most of the planning and I was to report to him. T.H. France, a 45-year-old mining engineer who had been driven out of Mexico by the Madera Revolution, was to accompany and help me. He spoke excellent Spanish and his years of Mexican experience had taught him how to get along with Latin Americans. He went ahead to Bolivia, our first target, to get an idea of the country and the problems. This was lucky as I hardly knew where Bolivia was.

Technological Power and Pollution of the Environment The increasing power of technology to destroy and disrupt the natural environment and the ecological systems upon which life depends has reduced man's margin for error in the use of this power. We must act, therefore, to deter and prevent the occurrence of future ecological disasters such as that caused on the British and French coasts by the sunken oil tanker, the TORREY CANYON, the Clinch River fish kill which occurred when a dam broke and released coal ash from a power plant operation, or that which threatened on the Clark Fork River in Montana when a strike at the Anaconda Copper Company threatened to shut down pollution control activities, thereby endangering fish and plant life on the Clark Fork River with copper waste. In the past, pollution of the environment has tended to be slow. But now, the increased power of technology to damage nature, the loss of in¬sulating space and the compression of time--all reduce our margin for error and the cushion which space and time once provided for our mistakes.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) will be Britain’s first major new railway for over a century—a high-speed line running for 109km (68 miles) between St. Pancras station in London and the Channel Tunnel. The new line has been under construction since October 1998 and the first phase will open in October 2003. The project includes22km of twin 7.15m ID TBM bored tunnels under London and the River Thames, and the 3km North Downs Tunnel, the first major NATM tunnel to be constructed in the United Kingdom since the collapse of the Heathrow Express Tunnels in 1994. This paper will discuss the design of these tunnels and describe the construction progress to date. The discussion will include details of segmental lining design, TBM specification, and sprayed concrete lining design.

The Mineral Creek Diversion Project is at the Asarco Ray Mine Complex, about128 km (80 miles) east of Phoenix, Arizona. The new tunnel will intercept the waters of Mineral Creek about 2,134 m (7,000 ft) upstream from an existing tunnel. The 5.74 m(18.83 ft) hard rock TBM will break into the old tunnel about 2,162 m (7,090 ft) in from the old portal after mining 3,888 m (12,753 ft). The TBM will mine through a series of igneous and metamorphic formations including volcanic tuff, soft volcanic ash, massive diabase, fractured quartzite, and schist. The TBM will hole through into the existing 4.88 m (16 ft) dia. horseshoe tunnel where the TBM will be disassembled and removed from the tunnel.

The Detroit River Outfall No. 2. is an effluent water conveyance system linking the Detroit Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Detroit River. The 6.4m (21ft) finished diameter tunnel extends 1,890m (6,200ft) east from the bottom of a 91m(300ft) deep, 9.2m (30ft) diameter drop shaft. At the eastern terminus of the tunnel, six Riser Shafts connect the tunnel to diffuser heads on the riverbed. The tunnel runs through a highly fractured Limestone formation capable of producing high levels of groundwater in?ows and Hydrogen Sul?de gas. Control of this water and gas was a theme which ran through the entire Project’s design and construction. This paper will provide an overview of each portion of the Project’s construction, including the Entrance Shaft, Precast Concrete Segments, TBM Tunnel, Pre-Excavation Grouting Methods, and the Riser Shafts.

In the present paper, two large diameter columns 2 m tall and 1.3 m diameter filled with crushed (finer) and run off mine (coarser) heap leach materials respectively were used to perform unsaturated flow studies. Instruments measuring moisture content and matric suction were placed in the columns at different depths as water was applied at calibrated flow rates from the top of the columns. The outflows from the columns were recorded using tipping bucket rain gauge placed at the bottom of the columns. Unsaturated hydraulic parameters were also obtained for the heap leach materials, scalped (passing 4.75 mm sieve size) and whole (passing 37.5 mm sieve size) sample. The measurements obtained from the columns were later compared with unsaturated flow modeling results. The comparison indicated sensitivity towards the sample size selection for unsaturated hydraulic parameters, and initial conditions considered in the model.
