A high effective method using a hammer mill, a column pneumatic separator and an electrostatic separator was studied for recycling copper from waste printed circuit board. The factors influencing the copper liberation degree and following separations were discussed. Two different physical separating methods were compared and discussed. Experiment results show that a well-controlled impact action can produce a satisfactory degree of copper liberation at a relatively coarse particle size. Around 90% copper recovery from printed circuit board for coarse particle size can be achieved by using a combination of electrostatic separation and pneumatic separation.

High anionic functionality acrylamide co-polymers and poly(sodium acrylate) are used as red mud flocculants in bauxite processing operations. These synthetic polymers are effectively displacing starch as the dominant polymer in red mud settling. The performance of these polymers is primarily dependent on the bauxite mineralogy, the alkalinity of the red mud slurry, and the anionic functionality and molecular size (viscosity) of the polymer. In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of the synthetic watersoluble polymers will be reviewed. The relationship between polymer structure and red mud slurry properties as they control polymer performance in settling red muds common to digester and washer circuits will be illustrated. The availability of polymers of varying functionality and viscosity will permit bauxite processors to make significant improvements in the economics of red mud disposal and valuable reagent recovery.

The Fosfago phosphate rock concentrator is located in the state of Goias, Brazil, 300 km south of Brasilia. The ore is from an enriched carbonatite, which was discovered in 1971 during exploration for pyrochlore niobium ore. The flowsheet was developed in Brazil by personnel from Agrico Chemical Company and Consolidated South America. Engineering was provided by Codemin, a subsidiary of Consolidated, Engineering and construction management was pro- vided by both Agrico and Consolidated personnel who formed the Fosfago team. The concentrator was designed for 500,000 tpy of 37-38% P2Oj dried product. The facilities consist of open pit mining, crushing, stockpiling, and concentration. The product is pipelined seven km to a filtering, flash drying, and railroad loadout station. The plant was successfully started in May 1979.

Spreadsheet software is an effective tool for simulating dynamic stochastic systems such as mineral processing plants. The two-product formula is used to show how to set up a Monte Carlo simulation in a spreadsheet template and how to calculate variances of dependent variables. The key to a reliable and realistic simulation model is to obtain unbiased estimates for all independent variables and variances in the set that defines the stochastic system. Monte Carlo simulation is also a powerful tool for optimizing sampling procedures, for applying sensitivity analysis and for designing and evaluating experiments.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

Linear grade distribution measurements determined from polished sections of randomly oriented particles can be used to estimate the extent of liberation for multiphase particles of specified size. Two techniques, optical image analysis and microprobe analysis, have been used to establish linear grade distributions. Both techniques were evaluated and compared using variable grade samples of products from a copper porphyry flotation circuit. The statistical significance of the linear grade distribution data obtained by optical image analysis was assessed. The average chalcopyrite content of these samples, as determined by chemical assay was used to estimate the variance of the experimental procedure. For a given accuracy, the number of particles required to obtain an unbiased representation of the sample was determined.

The City of Los Angeles capital improvement program includes the construction of a new 35-km interceptor sewer. This sewer will be built as a deep tunnel with finished diameters ranging from 2- to- 4 meters. The project will be constructed concurrently in two phases; an 18-km East-West and a 17-km North-South segment. The new sewer provides additional conveyance capacity for an existing deteriorating sewer that is scheduled for rehabilitation. Large sewage spills during the El Niño storms of 1998 resulted in a Cease and Desist Order that established an aggressive schedule for the completion of the project.

This review is based on a questionnaire sent out to 24 Canadian exploration companies, known to be active in the mineral exploration field, concerning their practice in the use of applied geochemical techniques in Precambrian terrains. Of the companies questioned, 16 returned completed questionnaires and of these, ten companies stated that they had some experience in this type of work. Of the companies who did not answer or return the questionnaire in time I know that at least three have been quite heavily engaged in applied geochemical work in the glaciated Precambrian areas. I also know that these three companies have been reasonably successful in their ventures, so I feel the following figures and opinions are, if anything, on the pessimistic side. Before continuing with the paper I would like to express my personal thanks to the Chief Geologists, Geologists and Exploration Managers of the various companies who cooperated in making this review possible by answering the questionnaires and making available summaries of their work in the glaciated terrains. Of the companies who stated that they had no experience in geochemical prospecting in glaciated Precambrian areas it is interesting to note that only two have reported that they do not use applied geochemistry at all. Two companies have reported that they make use of applied geochemistry in New Brunswick in areas of-light glaciation. Their opinion is that it is a useful aid to other techniques in evaluating mineralized areas.

The nature of industry structure is examined and the structure of the aluminum, copper, lead and zinc industries are described by the use of factor analysis. Capacity is defined and the relationship between industry structure and capacity utilization is examined. It is demonstrated that excess capacity is possible in industries with competitive or monopolistic characteristics, but the effects of the overcapacity are vastly different in the two cases. In a competitive industry, cycles of overcapacity with attendant fluctuating prices are expected. A change in industry structure from monopolistic to competitive characteristics over time causes profits and economic rents to be transferred from the producer to consumers of the mineral.

This paper discusses the conceptual design of cut-and-cover tunnels currently being considered as one of the replacement options for the earthquake damaged, elevated double-deck highway and seawall built in downtown Seattle 50 years ago. The 4.8 km (3 mile) long, 6-lane improvement consists of 1.6 km (1 mile) of at-grade roadway with aerial interchanges, 1.6 km (1 mile) of large two-level cut-and-cover tunnels along the Elliott Bay waterfront, and retrofit of the 50-year old, 1.6 km (1 mile)long Battery Street tunnel and north transition to grade. Construction of deep cut-and-cover tunnels, in complex glacial geology overlain by hydraulically placed fill immediately adjacent the existing sea wall, will require extensive use of concrete diaphragm walls, ground improvement and dewatering. The potential liquefaction and lateral spreading of the fill materials in this active seismic region pose significant design challenges and risk.

In truth, despite the development and refinement of new and potentially valuable technological tools, the approach or philosophy of the explorationist has received meager attention in professional literature. In many areas, the explorationist relies upon experience, subjective judgement and general intangible inspiration, often traveling together under the misleading pseudonym of "art," in achieving both an exploration plan and in making the myriad day to day decisions necessary to the execution of that plan. Without a solid, objective basis for decisions, exploration under this concept is little more than guesswork largely by intuition, and it is small wonder that many exploration programs flounder in a sea of over-expenditure inefficiency or fail to fulfill their expected goals within the funding which has been provided. From a rational management point of view, such a state of affairs is frustrating and inconsistent with the application of the same scientific principles which are presumed to be the basis for the exploration methods which are used. When discussing what Coal Mine Safety in the future will be, it is important to examine three areas which at present provide significant parameters to the industry. These three areas are: 1) Safety improvements in mining equipment; 2) Labor-management relations; and, 3) The politics of coal mine safety. EQUIPMENT Over the past several decades significant safety improvements have been made in the types of equipment now in use in most operations. Many of these improvements have evolved through mandates from either the U. S. Bureau of Nines, MESA, MSHA; and in some instances, the states. Cabs and canopies are examples of federal mandates while the use of ATRS initially was a state mandate.

Long Island Rail Road’s (LIRR) service to New York City is limited to Penn Station on the West Side of Manhattan, which is operating at its practical capacity for the commuter railroad. This situation imposes serious considerations for future growth and limits the destination of many Long Island commuters. The East Side Access Project will provide a connection of the LIRR to the landmark Grand Central Terminal (GCT)on the East Side of Manhattan. The construction of the connection will require significant tunneling and underground work utilizing a variety of construction techniques. In Queens, the connection will require five soft ground tunnels using pressurized face tunnel boring machine. In Manhattan, the connection will require a series of rock tunnels and caverns connecting to two deep large station caverns under GCT to accommodate eight tracks with four platforms in a stacked configuration. The caverns housing train rooms are connected to the lower level of GCT where a large concourse will be provided. With a budget of $4.3 Billion, The East Side Access Project is the largest transportation project ever undertaken in New York City. This paper provides an overview of the project, discusses its environmental and the engineering challenges, and provides an insight into the design development to date.

Larger grinding mills continue to utilize large gear-driven drives or electrical wraparound drives. The panel will include presenters from operations with large mechanical and electrical drives. JIM HANDLEY: Before we get to the third and final session, I want to introduce my co-conspirator for this session, John Mansanti. John is manager of milling with Newrnont Gold Company, Carlin, Nevada, and was very active in securing participation in this innovative symposium. I'm Jim Handley and I'm with Cyprus-Amax Minerals at the Sierrita copper and molybdenum mine. Our third presentation is titled "Geared Up or Wrapped Up?" I hear this topic discussed, but never at great length. I think that's because the opinions are fairly strong and diverse, and people generally aren't reinforced properly in their arguments. The first person to enlighten us on this topic is Scott Bird. He has more than 20 years with Kennecott, is a graduate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Utah, and is currently operations superintendent and deals with this phenomenon every day.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health and- ministration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to coal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. Traditional methods of creating a water tight shaft liner involve the use of segmented or welded steel. When shafts are located in ground that exhibits extremely difficult conditions of high water inflow and hydraulic pressure, composite liners are often combined with ground freezing during construction. The authors were searching for a cost effective and more flexible solution to hydrostatic liners design than the traditional concrete/steel composite design used so far. Searching through new technologies developed for tunneling applications, sprayed on membranes systems seemed very promising but were not developed for the specific circumstances encountered in shaft sinking applications where ground freezing is involved. Even though freezing is a very effective technique, it creates adverse temperature conditions for the application of spray on membranes. In addition, application and hydrating cure times for those membranes products ranged between six to twenty-four hours under ideal conditions (usually temperatures well above freezing point), which eliminated them from consideration in a shaft sinking cycle. While researching different spray on membrane materials, it was discovered that Stirling Lloyd Polychem Ltd. has developed and proven a different membrane material for waterproofing liners in different tunneling applications. The characteristics of the membrane exceeds the pressure parameters encountered in frozen shaft sinking operations, and the chemical cure times were reduced to one hour per layer which worked well into the shaft sinking cycle times. More over their system included a quality control procedure that allowed insuring integrity of the membrane at application time, a very desirable feature for shaft liner construction. However, the frozen rock surface still presented an unknown in the cure time and stability equation. As all membrane products a shotcrete substrate is usually required prior to application. The hypothesis used by the author was to use this shotcrete layer, not only as a substrate, but also as a thermal insulation against the frozen rock and the membrane during both application and curing time. The authors knew from experience that shotcrete could be applied successfully over frozen rock. But the shotcrete temperature curve over time was unknown and no information were found in the available literature. Testing was required to determine whether a suitable mix of shotcrete could be applied to the frozen shaft wall to provide enough heat of hydration for a suitable period of time to create conditions suitable for membrane application and curing.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts and different numbers of plastics types as well as of fine bulky materials (<4mm). These wastes are mostly given to land-fill sites. Thermal adhesion seems to be a great means to efficiently separate plastics mixes. Tests carried out at a special lab-scale testing unit (TaA1) confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the separating mechanism. The thermal properties of the individual types of plastics differ from each other to a sufficient degree so that special products or product mixes of high material purity can be obtained according to the respective requirements. For this reason, plastics mixes such as PE and PP can be sorted with very good results. The separation efficiency is influenced only by different contact surfaces. The contact period can be adjusted to a short period of time so that sorting large amounts of fine dispersed plastics seems feasible. Sorting processes in feed streams were shown to be technologically effective when applying appropriate technologies. For the time being, the technological application of a thermal adhesion drum separator (TaTr1) is suitable. First tests on such a pilot-scale unit provided good separation results.

INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country&apos;s economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

Current extensions of the European railway network require long TBM drives in the diameter range of 10 m under critical and varying rock conditions. In view of that and in particular for a 7 km long high-speed railway tunnel in Spain to be started in mid-2003 a new design for a hard rock Double Shield TBM has been developed by SELI (Italy) and Jäger (Austria) in collaboration with Mitsubishi (Japan)and Robbins (USA). Due to the new design and operational features that new type of TBM has been named Universal Double Shield TBM with a further extended area of application. Special attention has been given to outstanding torque and thrust capacities combined with the shortest possible length of an innovative shield arrangement, different advance modes in various ground conditions and further developed exploration and treatment facilities.

Allis Mineral Systems&apos; Grate- Kiln system can economically convert low-grade iron ore into high- grade iron-ore pellets suitable as feed material for blast furnaces for making steel. These pellets can also be fed to a direct reduction process for making sponge iron. The Grate- Car system combines the company&apos;s [ ] Grate-Kiln system for iron-ore pelletizing and Accar system for iron- ore reduction. The Grate-Car system consists of a traveling grate, a ported rotary kiln and a rotary cooler that are coupled in series. This system eliminates the pelletizing plant&apos;s rotary kiln and annular cooler. It reduces the need for some auxiliary equipment. This results in lower capital cost and lower energy consumption. The traveling grate provides that static bed handling necessary for heat hardening pellets before their discharge into the kiln. The ported kiln provides the reducing atmosphere with a more precise means of controlling the kiln axial temperature profile than conventional rotary kilns.
