This paper outlines a unique case of the development of strategies to reduce ventilation and heating costs in Konsuln iron ore mine in northern Sweden. The mine, located just south of Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag’s Kiruna iron ore mine, was developed as a test mine from 2018-2020 for the Sustainable Underground Mining (SUM) project. Besides functioning as a test mine, Konsuln also contributes to ore production. The existing mine ventilation system was designed for the current production rate of 0.8 million tons per annum (Mtpa). There is a plan to increase this rate to between 1.8 and 2.0 Mtpa.

The article presents the concept of the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) and ABAQUS software in the global monitoring of changes in the rock mass and on the surface of the area, as a result of backfilling the workings. Waste materials applied for stabilizing old mining workings can have a strong influence on the rock mass and surface. According to the regulations, this process should be carefully monitored, especially in terms of the safety of surface structures and rock mass stability. The article presents the concept of an analytic and graphic presentation of the results of the measurements of old workings, applying the Finite Element Method and ABAQUS software in model studies. The main purpose of such interpretation of the geodetic observations results is the application of methods providing wide possibilities to present the geometry of workings, their changes and the influence of the rock mass and surface.

A detailed assessment of acid rock drainage (ARD) potential was conducted at the Quintette Coal Mine site in northeastern British Columbia The site is unusual in that the coal seams contain low sulphur levels as compared to eastern coals (typically less than 0.5%), and the non-coal wastes generally do not to have the potential to generate acid on the basis of static ABA tests. The presence of small iron-stained seeps on the pit walls indicate localized sulphide oxidation, while the overall mine site drainage has remained of excellent quality with extremely low levels of metals after approximately 15 years of mining. Thus the site provides an excellent comparison to more problematic coal mine sites. For the Quintette assessment, static acid-base accounting (ABA) analyses of individual samples were compared to criteria for potentially acid generating materials developed for the U.S. Appalachian coal, as well as criteria developed in British Columbia for hard rock mines. Geologic units were characterized by the percentage of samples, or weighted thickness, that was deemed potentially acid generating (PAG). Links were then made to actual seepage and water quality emanating from geologic units around the site. Seeps at the site demonstrate a large range in pH (2.32 to 8.18). The few acidic seeps (pH < 4.0) were found to contain elevated levels of sulphates, dissolved iron, manganese and aluminum, consistent with the metals typically of concern in Appalachian coal mines. Other heavy metals that were detected in acidic seeps at Quintette included copper, zinc, nickel and cadmium. The use of simple ABA tests, and comparison of individual sample results with the Appalachian and British Columbia criteria, was found to be useful in predicting the probable sources of the small localized acidic seeps.

Unfavourable climatic conditions in stopes are of significant economic and social importance due to the following reasons: - Working effect is much lower leading to decreased output and work productivity disregarding implementation of mechanization. - Manpower operating capability decreases much faster under unsatisfactory climatic conditions. Under normal climatic conditions a workman would expend much less effort in line with a shorter effective time for the achievement of identical production effects since the work would be more efficacious. The objective of study of problems and climatic conditions is to make the working environment in mines suitable for normal development of operations. Lowering of mining works to increasing depths and winning of a growing number of small orebodies over a broad area makes the problem of creating suitable climatic circumstances more complex. Mining costs are growing due to bench conditions in line with decreasing metal content in the ore, so frequently the investments required for creating favourable climatic conditions represent, in addition to the selection of mining technology, a very important parameter when making decisions regarding exploitation. As known, the basic factors affecting climatic operating conditions in mines-are: temperature, humidity and speed of air flow, implying that the climatic operating conditions are closely related to mine ventilation. Usually, the concept of unfavourable climatic operating conditions includes increased mine air temperature and humidity and low air flow velocity so that heat exchange between human organism and the working environment is impeded or reduced to minimum. Metal mines in Yugoslavia are characterized by the existence of a large number of active faces - stopes and horizons and lowering of mining operations to increasing depths, so that face ventilation solutions are more and more complex. Since its foundation (1961), our Institute is engaged in investigation of factors influencing climatic circumstances improvement of calculations for air distribution and distribution control in complex ventilation networks and study of problems related to ventilation of large volume and irregular configuration faces, as well as application of gained knowledge in our mines. The paper presents the knowledge and experience gained in the case of Lead and Zinc Mine "Trepca" - Stari Trg.

New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland dominate Australian black coal production and exports. NSW produced 86 Mt (95 million st) of saleable coal in 1994, a doubling of output since 1980. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has driven this growth. This high Asian demand is expected to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. History The history of the New South Wales (NSW) coal industry can be traced to 1797 when coal was first taken from Newcastle to Sydney (Ellis, 1969). At that time, NSW was a British colony, independent from the other colonies, such as Victoria and Queensland. Australia, as a federation of colonies, did not exist until 1901. The Newcastle coal industry grew through the 1800s in line with the growth of the colonies. Several events spurred demand for Newcastle coal. These included: ? The NSW and Victorian gold rushes of the 1850s and associated population growth. ? The development of steamship traffic at the expense of sail. ? The development of railways and town gas supplies. By 1900, Australia was producing 6.4 Mt (7 million st) of coal, most of it from NSW. By then, NSW had established strong export markets in Indonesia, China, Japan and New Zealand. The history of energy consumption is marked by continual competition, changing intensity of use and substitution. From 1900 to 1940, the Queensland, Victorian and Indonesian coal industries developed at the expense of NSW exports. Similarly, New Zealand developed its hydroelectric industry and thus declined as the largest customer for NSW coal. Oil replaced steam in the shipping and railway markets and electricity replaced gas for lighting. Industrial efficiencies also affected coal. Between 1928 and 1938, coal consumed in generating power fell from by 17% on a kilowatt hour basis and, during the same period, the amount of gas produced per ton of coal rose by 18% (Shaw and Bruno). Faced with these pressures, production and exports stagnated. By 1941, Australian black coal production was 14.2 Mt (15.6 million st). NSW&apos;s production was 11.7 Mt (12 million st), up only 19% from 1912. Exports had virtually ceased (Fig. 1). In such circumstances, the industry had lost focus. INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC&apos; particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. A new database application for long term production scheduling has been developed for LKAB&apos;s Kiruna mine. The scheduler uses a new block data structure whereby the monthly production data for three raw ore products are predetermined on a month-by-month basis for each production area that could be mined within the schedule time horizon. The production schedule is created by assigning the starting dates to the each production area subject to various mining operational constraints such that that the monthly deviations for the production targets are minimized. The system is well integrated into the mine&apos;s overall computerized mine planning system.

While silica ores are generally considered to have little value, those with exceptionally low B and P content have, potentially, significant worth if processed for use in photovoltaics. The sales value of a cubic meter of ?run of the mill? silica sand is $42 per cubic meter (retail and delivered). If the silica sand can be used to produce solar silicon, its value after processing is $34,000 per cubic meter. Factors that impact the suitability of silica for direct processing in production of photovoltaics are examined.

Little knowledge is available that considers the effects of continuous miner position on the possible respirable dust exposure of the remote mining machine operator. Such information could be very useful for increasing the awareness of the remote operator as to those parts of an extended cut that generate higher levels of respirable dust. This data could be used to develop guidelines for positioning the remote operator to reduce his potential exposure. This work details the effects of continuous miner position on dust levels measured on the machine and at the remote continuous miner operator location.

Design of plugs for abandonment of boreholes and shafts may be governed by the bond strength between the plug and host rock. This paper presents the results of push-out tests on cement grout plugs in salt. Two expandable cement grouts have been tested. The average interface shear strengths ranged from 2 to 12 MPa. Peak shear stresses at failure, assuming an elastic stress distribution along the interface, were up to eight times higher. Standard deviations commonly reached 20%. Dissolution along the interface was observed, and may have been enhanced by clay inclusions in the salt. This dissolution appears to have reduced bond strengths. Application of the results to the design of plugs for larger openings (e.g. shafts, drifts, or boreholes) is discussed.

"Roof bolting has long been used in underground mines across the world to provide ground support. Modern roof bolts are cheap and easy to install with the use of specialized machines as a part of the production cycle. Lhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground room and pillar limestone mine that uses mechanically anchored roof bolts for ground support. The mine currently employs two different roof bolting patterns: a standard 5 × 5 foot pattern, and a 2.5 × 2.5 foot pattern for use in areas with particularly hazardous roof conditions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relative effectiveness of each bolting pattern.A series of numerical models were created using RocScience’s RS2. The models were based on a symmetrical section of the mine at its deepest point, and were modeled using Generalized Hoek-Brown failure criterion along with a discrete fracture network. A series of sensitivity analyses were performed on the models by varying parameters such as joint friction angle, crack persistence, joint randomization, and tensile strength of the limestone. Based on the results of the original models and sensitivity analyses, it appears that the standard bolting pattern provides sufficient roof support capacity under almost all the expected conditions at the mine, since factors of safety below the design value of 1.5 were only found for individual bolts in a few of the worst test cases considered. These results can help improve the Mine’s productivity and reduce operating costs without compromising safety.INTRODUCTION AND CASE STUDY DESCRIPTIONLhoist North America’s Crab Orchard Mine is an underground limestone mine located in Crab Orchard, Tennessee. The mine is located under an 800-foot-high mountain, and outcrops on three sides. The mine is accessed through three separate portals and has two main levels, along with a partially developed third level. Extraction is accomplished by the room and pillar method using 50 × 50 feet pillars and 50 × 50 feet rooms. The mining height is limited to 50 feet to keep the pillar width to height ratio around 1.0. Each heading is excavated in a two-stage process that consists of a 30-foot-tall top heading and a 20-foot-tall bench. A distance of at least 30 feet is maintained between the two levels at all times (Crab Orchard Mine Technical Staff, 2017)."

"Current and future operational processes in the mining and underground construction sector are under the influence of the prevalent competition and the acute necessity of optimization approaches concerning corporate and project processes. Besides general construction procedures, especially underground construction procedures and procedures in the field of deep shaft construction are high-profile. Those processes describe high technical challenges as well as increased requirements to occupational safety and health. Therefor an occupational safety management, which should be adjustable to the company itself and adaptable to all kinds of projects, shall be created. The creation of such an occupational safety management would lead to an economically optimized and safe (within the scope of OSH law) implementation of internal activities for the performance of construction services underground and in the field of deep shaft construction. With this approach the satisfaction of the high safety request as well as the demand for process optimization, as part of keeping the own competitiveness, will be satisfied successfully at once. PROJECT BACKGROUND Introduction The health and safety protection as well as occupational safety look back on a long historical development, which had brought more important sectors and developments during the last years, not only in Germany but also on the European and international level. The accident insurance protected by law has already been reported in 1884, which is astonishing early. The launch time point is strongly connected with the on-going economic development in the end of the 18th century, but above all this increased in the 19th century. The progress of occupational safety and especially the interest in the integration and the concentrated consideration of occupational safety and the health and safety protection in the company process is strongly visible during the 19th century and directly connected to the industrial revolution. [9] The industrial revolution and with that the development of work places lead to changing demands in the field occupational safety and health and safety protection. Insufficient security precautions caused problems in the industrial revolution, such as personnel and material losses as well as serious injuries and their consequences. These and the fundamental economic endeavours of the entrepreneurs lead therefore to the important step to develop an occupational safety system. [9] The prevailing basic ideas seize the insufficient security precaution of work places as well as the economical and profitable ideas of the entrepreneurs and bring them together. From this the necessary entrepreneur’s task comes into being and that is bringing the work conditions to the way that life and health of employees are not in danger. [9]"

In Nevada, large deposits of diatomite were formed during the Miocene / Pliocene in deep, alkaline lakes. Associated sediments are predominately fine-grained lacustrine with varying fluvial-clastic layers. Tephra layers are common, and probably served as a source of soluble silica for the extensive diatom colonies. Four companies are currently producing diatomite from Nevada deposits. Nevada ranks second to California in annual domestic production. Nevada diatomite is used in filter aids, fillers, absorbents, catalyst supports, and many other products. Economics and mineral reserves indicate that diatomite production in Nevada will be significant well into the next century.

The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

Large mining-induced seismic events and their aftershocks cause hazardous working conditions, damage infrastructure, delay production and pose a risk to miners in the deep-level gold mines of South Africa. Stress changes affecting pre-existing zones of weakness are the main drivers of large mining-induced seismic events, which are often followed by aftershocks triggered by quasi-static stress transfer within the rockmass. A better understanding of seismic source mechanisms is important if the seismic data is to be used more effectively for mine planning and to reduce the rockburst risk. Four large seismic events (ML≥2.0) associated with the mining of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) at Kloof Gold Mine occurred on 13 June 2017. The events and their fore- and aftershocks were studied in detail to establish the circumstances and the cause of the incidents. The local magnitudes ranged from ML 2.3 to ML 3.0, the seismic moment from 0.69 to 2.25 x 1013 Nm and the source radius from 92 – 150 m. The main shocks were preceded by foreshock sequences, which were especially vigorous in the four hours before the main shock. Seismicity was recorded by in-mine arrays of three-component 4.5Hz geophones (detection threshold approx. ML -2.9). Following all four main seismic events, ML 2.3, ML 2.3, ML 2.9 and ML 3.0, the network detected a total number of 300 aftershocks ranging from ML -2.9 to ML 1.6 spread within a 1300 m radius from the centre of the seismic network. The statistical properties of the aftershocks were analysed using three scaling relationships: (i) Gutenberg–Richter frequency magnitude relationship; (ii) modified Omori’s law; and (iii) Båth’s law for the magnitude of the largest aftershock. The geological or mining feature that controlled the failure (e.g., fault, dyke, pillar, abutment) was determined by calculating the orientation of the nodal planes of the large seismic events using moment tensor analysis and studying the aftershock distributions.

This paper deals with the basic mining engineering program required by all accredited engineering schools and the specific way the Pennsylvania Scare University presents and builds upon them. The manner in which these concepts provide the student with the necessary tools to function as a mining engineer in me realm of industrial minerals extraction is discussed.

The use of tank cells over the years has provided a means for low cost, space efficient, extra capacity in existing flotation circuits. In some cases, new plants have selected tank cells as the machine of choice. Typical tank cells use high efficiency impellers for mixing, which results in low power draw. Unfortunately, these mixers have poor aerating characteristics that compromise metallurgical performance. This has all changed with Outokumpu&apos;s new flotation concepts. Outokumpu has recently developed the HG or High Grade flotation cell that can provide higher recovery with better selectivity while maintaining the simple operation of conventional cells.

In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.

Polyacrylic acid (P AA) was evaluated as a selective flocculant for dolomite-apatite system. P AA of 4 million MW was found to flocculate both dolomite and apatite. However, their flocculation behavior was significantly different with 450,000 MW PAA which was the lowest molecular weight fraction capable of flocculation. In single mineral tests, at a dosage of 2kg/t 90% of dolomite and 35% of apatite flocculated. Selectivity was achieved in mixed mineral tests where apatite of 90% grade at 70% recovery level was obtained in the concentrate from a feed consisting of 80:20 mixture of apatite and dolomite. The dolomite rejection was about 75% which corresponds to 1% MgO in the concentrate.
