Demand for multifunctional drilling fluids continuously increases. In the quest for more hydrocarbons, drilling has extended to deep water areas (now in excess of 2.000 m) and to very deep wells (now in excess of 6.000 m). In these extreme conditions, low temperatures, as low as 1-5°C on the sea bed, high temperatures, in excess of 200°C, and high pressures, more than 1.000 bars, in the bottom of the well, are frequently encountered. In these harsh environments, synthetic oil and oil based drilling fluids are used, but the former are expensive while strict environmental requirements have limited the use of the latter. Thus, drilling industry has turned back to water based drilling fluids which use bentonite as primary viscosifier and as a fluid loss control additive. However, in conditions of high temperatures, bentonite suspensions gel and loose their exceptional low temperatures properties, thus, additives are needed to overcome such problems. In this article we review these challenging drilling environments and establish the requirements for the multifunctional drilling fluids. Our research indicates that demand for continuing use of bentonite by drilling fluid industry is strong. Furthermore, we bring forward the opportunities for new additive development which can expand the operational ranges of bentonite suspensions.

The Virginia Operations of Consolidation Coal Co. include a diversity of mine fan configurations which have been tested to quantify pressure losses through the inlet ductwork. Airflow and pressure measurements were taken at four shaft sites to calculate losses for the 90-degree bend at the top of the shaft and the self-closing dampers or closing doors located between the shaft and fan. Velocity contours were then developed from the test data to determine flow patterns in each fan system component. In addition, yaw and pitch angles of airflow through the fan annulus were measured to evaluate turbulence levels created by various inlet ductwork designs. The test results indicate that proper design of the shaft collar and ductwork arrangement for main mine fans can substantially reduce system pressure losses and air turbulence. BY minimizing the pressure drop experienced on the surface, these design improvements enable the bulk of the total pressure developed by the fan(s) to be utilized in the mine.

The University of Alabama Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of carbonate gangue from sedimentary apatites (francolite) in the pH range of 4-6 without collector conditioning of the pulp. The process, which does not require an apatite depressant, was modified to benepciate a high- MgO siliceous phosphate matrix from south Florida. The modified process includes two flotation stages, one for car- bonate removal and the other for phosphate recovery from the siliceous gangue. The selective flotation separation of the carbonate and phosphate from siliceous constituents of the matrix at various pH levels and collector dosages are discussed. In the carbonate flotation stage, about 70% of the MgO was rejected in the froth. The phosphate flotation stage produced concentrates analyzing about 31% P2O5 0.7% ? 5 MgO, and 4% insol. The Sacaton mine is a relatively new open¬pit copper mine owned by Asarco, Inc., which has been in production only a few years. The mineral deposits consist of two ore zones; a western, near-surface zone minable by open-pit methods, and a deeper eastern zone which will have to be mined underground, probably by block caving. The copper deposits are related to small quartz monzonite intrusives implaced into Precambrian granites. Both rock types act as hosts for the copper mineralization, which has been secondarily enriched sufficiently to constitute ore. In the western zone the enriched supergene chalcocite has been subjected to postenrichment oxidation processes with partial destruction of the chalcocite blanket. The deeper eastern chalcocite zone has not been as severely affected by later supergene processes. Several mineralogical populations are represented in the total copper deposit. Leached capping overlies the chalcocite enriched zone, and in the western ore body there is a very irregular interface between the leached and enriched zone, which is complicated by oxide copper minerals irregularly distributed. Primary lower-grade chalcopyrite mineralization occurs below the enriched zone. When mining commenced near the top of the enriched zone, considerable difficulty was encountered in correlating the actual grade of ore in place with the estimated grade of the mining blocks. The mineralogical complexity and fairly wide spacing of diamond drilling made reliable grade estimation of individual ore blocks a difficult procedure.

The study of the apatite deposits of the Aldan Shield shows wide spread of the Precambrian apatite-carbonate ores and possibilities of using them for extraction of apatite. Dependency of flotation on ore minerals was studied according to the following scheme: preparation of the monomineralic samples of anhydrite, gypsum, chlorite, serpentine, phlogopite, apatite; mixing them in apatite ore of the average composition; followed by flotation. Another series of the experiments was conducted to ascertain a dependence of flotation activity of the different minerals on the different flotation reagents, which were used as collectors. It has been shown that apatite from silicate-carbonate ores is most extractable because it has the biggest size of grains and is the most free of inclusions. Beneficiation of the sulphate-containing apatite-carbonate rocks is possible when flotol - 7.9 is used as a collector. Meanwhile, the use of the tallaktam leads to an increase in the sulphate recovery. The estimation of individual technological features of the layered Mghydrosilicates and their influence on the process of beneficiation has been examined using samples of apatite-dolomite ore (P205-8%) with the addition of the phlogopite, serpentine and chlorite. The results show that there is little influence of the chlorite presence on the flotation while the serpentine presence leads to a decrease of the flotation, because of its high specific surface area.

Introduction The kinetic approach, to understand a process in detail, has been extensively used in the unit operations of many engineering systems. In green pelletization, the kinetic studies have been mainly oriented towards quantifying the growth mechanism (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Sastry and Fuerstenau, 1977; Capes and Danckwerts, 1965; Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1966; Kapur, 1972) and in a few cases, relating the rate of growth with added liquid content (Kapur and Fuerstenau, 1964; Newitt and Conway-Jones, 1958). Studies on the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of the order of the kinetics are virtually non-existent. Sastry and Fuerstenau (1970) classified the agglomeration process into "free in-space" (dilute particle system) and "restricted-in¬space" (highly dispersed particle system) and noted that the former is a second-order process while the latter corresponds to a pseudo first-order rate process. The present paper attempts to describe the kinetics of green pelletization, in terms of order of the kinetics, using pyritiferrous shale as the material system. Experimental Pelletization experiments were carried out using -100 mesh pyritiferrous shale, in a laboratory disc pelletizer, at four intervals of pelletization time (15, 20, 25 and 30 min). The green pellets obtained were size analyzed. The size distribution of pellets has generally been represented by a single parameter such as the mean granule diameter, ratio of maximum and minimum pellet diameter, etc. In the present study, the d50 (50% passing size) of pellets has been considered to represent the size distribution of pellet. INTRODUCTION Coal is forecast to be an increasingly important and economical source of energy for the future as the supply of oil and gas declines relative to overall energy demand and perhaps in absolute quantities produced. With the decline in productivity, especially in underground mining, in the early seventies coinciding with the need to produce greater quantities of coal for market, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place in the United States. Consolidation Coal Company (Consul) produces about 50 million tons of coal per year with approximately 66% being from underground mines. Most of the mines are located in the Appalachian Region in the States of Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, and in Ohio and Illinois. Coal is produced by the room-and-pillar mining method with continuous mining machines in addition to an increasing number of longwall mining faces. Continuous mining machines will continue to be used for driving longwall development entries as well as in areas where partial extraction must be practiced in order to support the overburden rock because of surface structures or in areas that cannot be subsided, or where unfavorable geologic conditions limit the application of the longwall mining methods. ROOM-AND-PILLAR MINING METHOD Some background in the room-and-pillar mining method may be helpful to provide perspective. This method has been widely practiced since the beginning of coal mining in the region. It is a flexible system because it can provide either partial or nearly complete extraction, and coal pillars can be left where needed to support surface structures or oil or gas wells or because of unfavorable geologic conditions (Choi, Dahl and McCain, 1980).

Drill-hole contamination has been a problem for many years. Contamination of rotary drilling has been well documented. More recently contamination in wet reverse circulation drilling has been noted by Echo Bay and others at the 1991 AIME annual meeting. Mine Development Associates (MDA) has worked on a number of projects at which contamination of drill-hole samples has occurred. Properties are commonly acquired with drilling accomplished by other companies and at times the only records of the drilling program are the drill-hole logs and assays themselves. Identification of contaminated zones is sometimes difficult to determine. Most geologists and engineers in the industry are aware of the magnitude of the problem, as contamination is a relatively common problem with wet reverse circulation drilling. MDA has developed a computer program to help determine if contamination has occurred when using reverse circulation drilling, based on cumulative distribution curves and by a process we call decay analysis. Most deposits are not homogeneous throughout the deposit, but exhibit a characteristic drop-off or decay of assay values around higher-grade drill-hole intercepts. Using graphs of this characteristic decay and cumulative frequency distribution, we can use the program to help determine contamination in several ways. This paper will discuss the use of decay analysis at three gold deposits where contamination is known to have occurred. In one of the deposits decay analysis was used, successfully to determine if contamination had occurred, while in the other two the decay analysis was used to verify our decay analysis procedure.

Federal mine safety regulations prohibit the recirculation of face air In a gassy Class III metal-non metal mine. Tg Soda Ash, Inc, operates a 2.0M ton/yr (2.2 million st/yr) underground gassy Class III trona mine In southwest Wyoming, currently liberating approximately 5,700 m3/day (200,000 ft3/day) of methane. Because of the low methane emissions and the incombustibllity of trona, it was decided that Tg would be an excellent environment to test recirculation at a U. S. gassy mine, for possible future use by Industry. A research program was begun with the cooperation of MSHA, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Utah, and Tg. Initial testing centered around re-using shop air under¬ground. Next, conduct a continuous miner section recirculation test to see how the face contamination was affected by 305m (1,000 ft) and 610m (2,000 ft) recirculation distances. A district test followed to examine the effects of the critical parameter - respirable dust. Finally, a long-term program to study respirable trona dust transportation and deposition in mine airways to plan for district fan siting and effects on face air dust levels.

US Borax began exploration in southeast Alaska in the summer of 1971 with a staff of two, Barry Watson and Jackie Stephens, based in Spokane, WA. After several years of prospect examinations in the islands west of Ketchikan, AK, and with the able assistance of prospector-pilot Kenny Eichner, Jackie Stephens proposed and organized a boat-based, helicopter-supported, stream sediment sampling program to explore the western contact of the Coast Range intrusive complex on the mainland. The rationale for this included: the extension of known mineral trends from Canada into southeastern Alaska along favorable geologic zones; the western contact area of the Coast Range intrusives with metasediments and metavolcanics was a favorable target for metals exploration as shown by numerous small prospects. Knowledge gained from mineral exploration of the island areas indicated that they were well mineralized, but already well explored, and that the known mineral potential was probably present in subeconomic quantities (Brooks, et al.). Publications of the US Bureau of Mines and other scientific agencies were gathered and every prospect within the southem southeastern Alaska area was plotted. This in itself lent a tremendous amount of knowledge to the total exploration program. US Borax's McLean Arm copper property on Prince of Wales Island was drilled and dropped while this compilation of data was proceeding. We found that many companies had followed one another around the island areas, but little or no exploration had been done on the west side of the Coast Range, and that many explorationists flatly stated that the west side of the Coast Range was barren of mineralization. In summary, although some of the shoreline and near shoreline areas of the mainland had been explored, no organized boat-helicopter exploration program had been done along the favorable western zone of the Coast Range Intrusive complex. We decided to use a boat as a floating hotel for the crews that were to be helicoptered into the back country from tidewater for our initial stream-sediment sampling program.

Traditionally, production volume has been considered the major determinant of cost. As volume increases, total cost increases but unit cost decreases. This concept has been so widespread in industry that many of the tools used to analyze costs are based on production volume as the sole measure of activity and driver of unit cost-fixed and variable costs, cost-volume-price and breakeven analysis, contribution margin, flexible budgets, and others. Clearly, volume is a driver of cost. It is important in both a tactical sense (to the manager at an operating mine) and a strategic sense (as one determinant to the firm's overall cost position). However, many other factors influence costs as well, even though they have not been studied to the same extent. For example, production managers know that their costs will be reduced if the workforce does not have accidents. Safety costs are to a large extent independent of volume. Other cost components increase as volume increases, such as some environmental charges. Some costs may or may not reflect volume changes. Maintenance, for example, may appear as either a fixed or variable cost, as can operating labor in facilities that are highly automated. In the strategic sense, where the firm is selecting a strategy to pursue competitive advantage and increased profitability, all costs are variable. This reflects both the strategic intent and the long-term time frame associated with strategic positioning. Tactically, on a month-by-month basis, some costs are essentially fixed. Cost driver analysis must therefore consider the relevant time frame.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. A mineral or metallurgical process uses various inputs, such as ores, energy and other raw materials, to make different products that fulfill societal needs. The processing of raw materials has changed in recent years due to the increased complexity of processing low-grade ores, intensifying competitiveness and greater constraints. For process improvement, various plant optimization and process modifications must be conducted under environmental, social, political and economic constraints. Processing research and education's success in meeting the process industry's future needs depends on an adequate balance between micro- and macro-engineering approaches. In its simplest form, macro-engineering is concerned with the "big picture," while micro-engineering requires looking at a subset of the process. So macro-engineering may be defined as an investigation of the larger or "whole" system to achieve the desired goals. And micro-engineering may be viewed as a quantitative investigation of a subset of the process, to determine cause-and-effect relationships within the subset. Two different approaches might be used in macro-engineering analysis. In one, the big picture may be viewed without a detailed knowledge of the subunits. With this approach, statistical tools are used to relate input and output parameters. Also, actual plant data or analog models might be used to obtain the desired information. The usefulness of such an approach increases with problem complexity. To attain the desired goals using the second, "model-based," approach, a detailed knowledge of the subunits is often useful and their interactions may be considered. In complex process analysis, the first of these approaches is more useful since less information is needed. However, it is also less exact and more likely to fail if there are significant changes in conditions and interactions. The second approach, on the other hand, is more exact, with greater predictive ability within the narrow subset being considered. Consequently, it is difficult and costly to conduct.

Two automated fire detection system configurations have been used successfully in underground mines: the pneumatic "tube bundle" approach and the electronic telemetry approach. The electronic telemetry approach is more widely used, owing to its greater speed, flexibility, and capacity to both monitor other underground conditions, and remotely control underground equipment. However, depending on specific mine conditions and layouts, pneumatic detection, or a combined pneumatic/telemetered system may offer significant advantages over the telemetered approach alone. This paper describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in- mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system tailored to the unique requirements of multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. A Bureau developed proto- type system is described with emphasis on design features which counter commonly perceived and/or experienced pneumatic detection system operating problems. Finally, the results of a 3-yr in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype hardware are discussed. Included are descriptions of system layout and coverage, response time, tube leakage, sample dilution, elimination of accumulated water from sample lines, and system maintenance and reliability.

The importance and complexity of the ventilation systems in many underground coal mines necessitates the use of digital computers to model the ventilation networks. The modeling procedures used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilize the MSHA-modified Penn State computer program. The basic techniques used by MSHA have been described in detail in NESA (now MSHA) Informational Reports 1066 and 1183 (1. 2). Two basic methods are utilized for modeling underground mine ventilation systems. The first modeling method is the use of actual air-flow, pressure, and fan-performance data acquired during a full air-pressure, air-quantity ventilation survey to develop a mathematical model of the ventilation system. The second modeling method is the design of a ventilation system using data obtained from calculation, from past experience, or from technical literature. The latter method would typically be used to design a ventilation network prior to developing a new mine. Regardless of which method is used for modeling, there is a need to know, or to calculate, appropriate resistance values to be used for airways and for the various ventilation control structures. Such data is typically difficult to obtain and this report is an attempt to summarize typical resistance values which may be used in designing ventilation networks for new mines or in simulating proposed system changes in existing mines. Illustrations are presented to show where some of the resistances typically are located and how they are modeled in mine ventilation net- works.

The dynamic behavior of batch mill, CSTR mill, and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone was analyzed using the dynamic population balance model (PBM). The dynamic solution of the PBM of a batch, CSTR and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone forms the basis of the dynamic analysis presented here. Two numerical dynamic solution approaches were used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data was used to obtain the functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Different dynamic solutions were obtained depending on the numerical approach used. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Study area is located on the NorthWestern of Yatagan-Yenikoy and placed in the units of the crystaline Menderes massif of Eagen, Turkey. Stratigraphically gneissic, migmatitic and metagranitic rocks are found at the base. Garnet schists, phyllitic rocks lie unconfirmitelly upon the basement rocks. Permian aged marbles can be observed as diferrent sized lenses within the schists. Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous aged gray colored dolomites and pure crystaline calcite bearing marbles lie upon the Permian aged schists. Neogen series, mainly composed of conglomerates, claystones, marl and limestones unconformly cover the other basement series, mentioned above. Pure calcite bearing marble occurances are found at 2 locations in the study area. These are known as Berber Quarry and Kavuk Quarry. Samples numbered as N7, N8, NA from the Berber Quarry, mineralogically composed of Calcite (97-99%)+iron oxide (1-3%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (97,98%), Fe2O3 (0.5-1%), SiO2 (0.025%) N9 and N10, sampled from the Kavuk Quarry-mineralogically composed of Calcite (94,95%)+iron oxide (2-3%)+albite-Quartz (1-2%) and chemically contain CaCO3 (92-93%), SiO2 1.49%, Fe2O3 0.42%. Especially in plastic and paint sector albite and quartz are unwilling minerals due to their hardness. Approximatelly 1/20 of the study area (87.500 km2) contains industrial calcite occurances. Moreover about 100 billion Tons geological, 1.86 billion tons runable (possible) calcite reserve calculated. It can be expected the calcite quality will be increased with depth. During the running stage of the quarries over burden removel and hand sorting processes will positive affect of the quality.

Spherical oxide particles can be used as mineral fillers, paint pigments, polishing materials and catalysts. They can be prepared using various techniques involving precipitation and spray drying. Melting of particles in a high-temperature flame is a simple technique which produces particles with a high degree of sphericity and high smoothness from non-spherical feed material. In current research the preparation of alumina particles by melting the feed material in a hydrogen- oxygen flame is described. The spherical particles obtained were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray difiaction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electrokinetic measurements. The particles pre- pared exhibit a high degree of sphericity and a low level of roughness. The chemical composition of the material after preparation is unchanged, however the crystallographic structure is different. It is suggested that alumina changes from pure a-alumina to a mixture of different transitional forms. Changes in the electrokinetic behavior were also observed for alumina which can be attributed to the strong dehydration of the oxide surface and/or change in the crystallographic structure. Also, the possible accommodation of trace amount of impurities in the surface zone during melting cannot be ignored.

Commercial scale in-situ leach uranium facilities (i.e., solution mining) have operated since late 1975, and have begun to appear in increasing numbers in the last few years. Solution mining involves the pumping of ground water, fortified with oxidizing and complexing agents, into an ore body, leaching and solubilizing the uranium in-situ, and then pumping the solutions to the surface where they are fed to a mill. Milling is by conventional means, involving ion exchange, precipitation, calcining and packaging processes. This paper presents an overview of the solution mining process, and discusses an empirical method that has been used to determine the radon gas release rate in Bq (curies) per year for the overall operation of the facility including wellfields, milling processes and waste storage reservoirs. In addition to radon generation on the surface from radium decay, it has been determined that the major component of radon release is associated with the dynamic generation of radon from solutions returning from underground. Process parameters impacting this evaluation and the mathematical expressions developed are discussed. The preliminary data accrued is presented.

A series of laboratory based push and pull tests were carried out to investigate how surface profile influence the load transfer mechanism of bolt/resin interface. Tests were carried out in both 75 mm and 150 mm long steel sleeves. Three types of bolts were examined, they were bolts most commonly used for strata reinforcements in underground coal mines in Australia. The bolts had near equal core diameter but of different profile configurations. The change in the length of the encapsulation sleeve was examined in light of the small number of profiles encapsulated effectively in short 75 mm long sleeves. The results showed that peak loads and displacements were directly related to the height and the spacing of the bolt surface profiles. Profile spacing appears to have greater influence on load transfer capacity than the profile height.
