This paper presents the second of a two part study on density stratification in a laboratory batch jig. The first study, reported elsewhere, investigated the effect of operating conditions on the stratification profile achieved at equilibrium. The study reported in this paper investigated their effect on the kinetics of density stratification under 18 different sets of operating conditions - five for binary systems with different particle densities; and 13 for a ternary system with different configurations of the jig cycle. Although the study was academic in nature (it involved simple systems of 8 mm glass beads) it has a number of practical implications. It found that the most influential operating variables affecting stratification kinetics are the amplitude of water displacement, the pulsion hold time, and, to a lesser extent, the pulsion time. It also found that reasonable rates of stratification can be expected in systems with density differences as low as 237 kg/m3 but below this the kinetics deteriorate significantly. The two studies together suggest that, within a broad range of operating conditions, the equilibrium stratification profile is independent of control variables and it is the control of stratification kinetics that has the primary influence on the quality of density separations in a jig. Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. As a rule, removing waste rock at the beginning of the process improves the conditions for the flotation of minerals, and also reduces the operating costs of crushing, grinding and flotation. Lead-zinc ores in the Shalkiya deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan are classified as difficult for enrichment, but taking into account their significant reserves, they are one of the main potential ores for the production of lead and zinc. Under industrial conditions, for processing ores of the Shalkiya deposit, a selective flotation concentration scheme with the production of lead and zinc concentrates is recommended. However, according to the recommended scheme, it is not possible to obtain high-quality concentrates of lead and zinc, with high metal recovery. The paper presents the results of studies of preliminary gravitational enrichment of lead-zinc ore in the Shalkiya deposit. Based on the fractional analysis for the particle size range of -40+8 mm, Henri- Reingard enrichment curves were constructed, separation density (2730 kg /m3) was established to isolate the light fraction with the lowest possible lead and zinc content, and gravity enrichment indices (0.7-0.71) were determined. It was found out that when using gravitational enrichment of the original large-sized ore in the Shalkiya deposit, tails are released at the beginning of the technological process with a yield of up to 20% with the extraction of silica up to 30%, calcite up to 11% and carbonaceous matter up to 12%. As a result of the studies, it was found that the beneficiation of crushed lump ore could be conducted in heavy suspensions. One of the positive aspects of the use of gravitational enrichment is the reduction of energy costs for grinding the heavy fraction, which was experimentally proved in this article. "After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

There are many potential uses in gold mining for an initially stiff element of backfill that will yield at a predetermined load and maintain that load to beyond a compression of 30%. Such elements could be used as yielding rib pillars, as replacements for more conventional supporting packs, as con- fining bulkheads for mass backfill, as supports to provide lateral constraint, and load-carrying augmentation to overloaded rock pillars. The paper describes a system of reinforced cemented backfill that can be used to provide the above requirements. The necessary characteristics of the reinforcing and the cemented tailings are described together with the method of design to obtain a predetermined stiffness and yield load. The load-compression characteristics of the reinforced tailings elements are described and the effect of changing various of the design parameters is demonstrated.

"Multiple-point simulation (MPS) methods have been developed over the last decade as a means of reproducing complex geological patterns while generating stochastic simulations. Some geological spatial configurations are complex, such as the spatial geometries and patterns of diamondbearing kimberlite pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond quality and distribution.Two MPS methods were tested for modelling the geology of a diamond pipe located at the Ekati mine, NT, Canada. These are the single normal equation simulation algorithm SNESIM, which captures different patterns from a training image (TI), and the filter simulation algorithm FILTERSIM, which classifies the patterns founded on the TI. Both methods were tested in the stochastic simulation of a four-category geology model: crater, diatreme, xenoliths, and host rock. Soft information about the location of host rock was also used. The validation of the simulation results shows a reasonable reproduction of the geometry and data proportions for all geological units considered; the validation of spatial statistics, however, shows that although simulated realizations from both methods reasonably reproduce the fourth-order spatial statistics of the TI, they do not reproduce well the same spatial statistics of the available data (when this differs from the TI). An interesting observation is that SNESIM better imitated the shape of the pipe, while FILTERSIM yielded a better reproduction of the xenolith bodies. IntroductionThe simulation of geological units poses several technical problems that challenge the capabilities of available geostatistical simulation approaches and their ability to deal with spatial complexity of categorical variables. The spatial geometry of diamondbearing pipes and their internal facies controlling diamond distributions are a specific and well-known difficult modelling problem. The geometry of a kimberlite pipe is typically like an inverted cone (Figure 1); the wider part is known as the crater and is located near the surface, and the narrower, deeper part is known as the diatreme. Xenolith bodies can also be found inside the pipe. A very important contribution to the geological modelling of the contours of the pipe is the measure of uncertainty about the location of the contact between the kimberlite pipe and the host rock."

A solar reflector soiling study was carried out at a ferromanganese smelter in South Africa to assess the soiling rates at different locations around the plant. Several meteorological parameters were monitored to give insight into the conditions that lead to increased soiling. Mineralogical characterization of dust samples collected from the reflectors and the atmosphere revealed that only a certain size fraction is of importance with regard to soiling, and that the dust can be attributed to both raw materials and smelter products. Proximity to the dust source was the primary driver for increased soiling. The site that experienced the most soiling was very close to raw material heaps; this was deemed an outlier and was excluded from the summary statistics. The secondary driver for increased soiling was location relative to the smelter dust sources and the wind’s direction and speed. The reflector set at the best location experienced 13.1% less soiling than the set at the ‘worst’ (but still feasible) location, represented by an averaged mean daily reflectance loss of 0.0186. The study revealed that while there are periods of intense soiling at this particular site, proper planning of reflector location in relation to the smelter dust sources can significantly mitigate the soiling rate.

This paper presents an evaluation of the effect that the mineral feed characteristics have on the metallurgical performance in an industrial flotation circuit. Variables such as mineralogy, particle size, solid content and mineral grade were evaluated using a flotation simulator, which was previously developed and validated using industrial data from different concentrators. The metallurgical performance was evaluated not only from the point of view of recovery and concentrate grade, but also by analysing less common variables such as froth carrying rate, froth and collection recovery, water recovery and others. Then, new data from the industrial flotation circuit was used to complement this analysis and evaluate the simulator predictability by comparing simulated and measured data. The results allowed for the quantification of the significant effect that mineralogy and particle size have on recovery and/or concentrate grade. Therefore, the grinding stage and flotation cells design become important factors to avoid a significant loss in metallurgical performance when feed mineral characteristics change in an industrial operation. In this context, an evaluation of cells design and arrangement should be performed to compensate the loss in recovery and concentrate grade in order to find an optimal operating condition. In August 1965, the late Mr Alan Smith, then Mill Superintendent at Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (GMK), Australia, asked me to investigate the planting of vegetation on the GMK slimes dams in order to ease the dust problem in urban and industrial areas-a problem that is caused largely by dust from these barren slimes dams. My early sources of information were the comprehensive papers in various issues of the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, the climate of Johannesburg differs from that of Kalgoorlie. The average Johannesburg rainfall, which falls mostly in summer, is 730 mm, and the average maximum summer temperature is 26°C (top 34°C). The winters are cool, the average maximum being 18°C (low -7°C). Kalgoorlie, on the other hand, receives, on average, 257 mm of sporadic rainfall, has hot dry summers with an average maximum of 35°C (top 45°C), and cool winters with an average maximum of 18°C (low -2°C). My obvious choice was to look at established trees growing on the GMK lease. A number of Athel pines were growing vigorously adjacent to the Oroya mining and geology offices and also on a nearby sand dump. The Athel pine (Tamarix aphylla), which is native to North Africa, Asia, and India, was originally introduced into Australia in 1936 by Mr Essington Lewis, then manager of BHP. His cuttings were planted in Whyalla, where some difficulty had been experienced in finding trees and shrubs that would flourish despite the district's low rainfall. In August 1965, cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1 cm diameter were taken from the GMK trees, stripped of leaves, and placed in jars of water in the sun. When the cuttings had sprouted both leaves and roots, they were planted in local soil in tins (about 20 cm high and 10 cm in diameter), and watered daily. In October 1965, when the new shoots were about 8 cm long, the trees were transplanted onto a lower flat section¬approximately 30 m wide, 30 m long, and 2 m high-of the Trafalgar slimes dam. No additional soil or fertilizer was used, and the trees were planted in their tins, the bases of which had been removed (the tin would eventually rust away). A few common varieties of non-prickly cactus and two native salt bush (spp Atriplex) were also planted, but did not survive, probably because of the acidity of the slime. During the summer of 1965/1966, Kalgoorlie's rainfall was 88 per cent above the average, and this probably helped the trees to survive. The moisture content was usually about 2,5 per cent from about 10 cm below the surface, and the pH value of the slime (d80 approximately 75 µm) was about 6. The trees were watered twice a week for the first four months and then left untended. By 1974 they had grown to only about 0,7 m, which indicated that their growth in slime was very slow. Other Athel pines were planted on the wall of the dam, but did not survive beyond 1974, probably because of the steep (about 500) slope and the hardness of the walls, which were initially formed by hand-shovelling of the slime as the height of the dam was raised. Five of the six Athel pines planted in 1965, which probably reached maturity (approximately 5 m in height) in 1981-16 years after being planted-have survived. In the early 1980s, waste rock had to be dumped on the dam, but the management of KMA (now KCGM) took care to ensure that the trees were not buried. Trials are being conducted on other tailings dams so that the performance of cuttings taken from the trees on Trafalgar dam can be compared with that of cuttings taken at various sites in Western Australia. It might also be worth while for an attempt to be made to strike cuttings from Trafalgar dam in pots containing different mixtures of soil and slime.

Slope stability is a fundamental part of a successful mining operation. It impacts directly on the safety of personnel and the economics of the mine. The Jwaneng Mine in Botswana is planning a push back of 644m depth in the south east wall. Mining will commence in 2010 and be completed in 2024. This will put the mine in the deep pit category. The mine has invested in extensive geotechnical data gathering and design programs that started as far back as 2003 for the south east wall. The south east wail of Jwaneng Mine is characterized by foliation that dips adversely into the mining faces. The orienta1ion of the foliation is variable due to intense tectonic movements that have also caused the occurrence of faults that are sub-vertical. A considerable amount of information on the characteristics of structural patterns and the rock mass has been collected. This paper presents an overview of the feasibility level geotechnical design that is about to be concluded.

Computational fluid dynamics have been applied for detailed modelling of particle-bubble collisions. The most accurate approach in the previous work is using the point particle method to treat particles and bubbles. Nevertheless, the sizes of particles and bubbles are generally bigger than the Kolmogorov scale in the high turbulence of the flotation environment, which makes the point particle method inappropriate. This paper describes particle-resolved direct numerical simulation on the collisions between particles (denoted as heavy particles) and bubbles (denoted as light particles) in a homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow field, and a comparison with the point particle method.. A largescale stochastic forcing scheme was implemented within the mesoscopic multiple-relaxation-time LBM approach to maintain turbulence intensity at targetted levels. Both kinematic and dynamic collision kernels were evaluated to study the correlation of total collision events and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate. The results show that collisions between particles increase with the TKE dissipation rate as radial relative velocities between particles increase with it. In the particle-resolved simulations, the dynamic collision kernels were found to not match with the kinematic collision kernels as in the point particle method. Quantitatively, they were approximately 4 to 10 times smaller than the corresponding dynamic collision kernels. Therefore, it is not reasonable to estimate the kinematic collision kernel in particle-resolved simulations as its rationales are not valid. However, the collision behaviour can still be accounted for by means of the dynamic collision kernel since it is obtained from the direct statistical analysis of the collision events. In view of this the Chairman proposed that the paper on flash smelting be introduced and discussed first, after which the remaining three papers would be introduced followed by discussion on all three.Dr Cocquerel, who presented the first paper, used some typical flow diagrams to illustrate the process and stated that the program considered only steady-state operations and did not take into account the dynamical changes. Subjective judgment was necessary for the preparation of input data and some degree of user appreciation was required.Dr Cocquerel said that no work bad yet been done on an optimization program, but that this was being considered. Such a program would require a large amount of physical and chemical data which were not yet available. The variables to be optimized were the energy and material consumptions and the loss of metal in the slag.The Chairman opened the discussion by asking Dr Cocquerel if he could give a brief description of the flash smelting process for the benefit of those not familiar with the subject. Dr Coquerel replied that in the Outokumpu process con¬centrates were injected directly into the furnace, and that the process was somewhat analogous to flash distillation or evaporation processes, but was perhaps closer to the burning of pulverized fuel.The process had two distinct advantages. First, the heat evolved in the smelting reaction was used to heat the furnace, which resulted in less fuel consumption, and, second, the effluent gases were cheaper to treat than the effluent gases from other pyrometallurgical processes. This was important particularly in view of the current interest in pollution problems.Mr P. Marais thought that the authors had done themselves an injustice by not including details of the very complex processes taking place in the furnace."

"SynopsisThe densities of selected CaO-Al2O3-MgO slag systems were measured at 1823K by the Archimedean method. Thirteen different slag compositions were chosen based on different levels of the MgO content and the mass ratio of CaO/Al2O3. The results indicated that the density of the slag decreases with increasing MgO content (from 0–3.78 mass%), but increases with further increases in MgO content up to 11.33 mass%. At a fixed MgO content of 5.5%, the trend of density change with CaO/Al2O3 in the slag is similar to that for changes in MgO content. On the basis of the regular solution approximation rules of excess molar quantities, an attempt was made to estimate the molar volume of the slags investigated. The application of the molar volume model confirmed that the present expanded approximation rules are applicable to predict the molar volumes of the melts discussed.IntroductionDensity is one of the most important fundamental properties of slags, which influences metallurgicaly phenomena in many ways. Density is sensitive to the nature of the chemical bonds and the species in the melt, and is of great importance not only for theoretical research on the structural properties of molten slags, but also for industrial applications. Density is also required to estimate other key properties used to assess the behaviour of high-temperature molten oxides, e.g. viscosity, surface tension, and thermal conductivity.Liquid calcium aluminate slags that contain magnesia are the basis of most ladle slags for secondary refining processes. The CaO-Al2O3 binary phase diagram (Hallstedt , 1990) shows the eutectic composition (50 wt% CaO and wt% Al2O3) has the lowest melting temperature. The main emphasis of this study is on the 12CaO·7Al2O3 refining slag with MgO additions. The CaO-Al2O3-MgO ternary system is of considerable importance in industrial metallurgical processes, and is fundamental to the understanding of metallurgical slags, ceramic materials, and geological phenomena."

"Physical and numerical modelling methods were followed to identify mechanism(s) for tundish slag entrainment in a bare tundish and one with a flow control device (FCD).The physical and numerical models made use of water and paraffin to model steel and slag respectively. Observations from the physical model showed that the steel-slag interface remains immobile in both cases. Entrained paraffin formed droplets approximately 1 mm in diameter. Results from both models (numerical and physical) showed that in both cases (bare and FCD case), areas of high entrained slag concentration exist near the inlet region. The entrained slag concentration decreases towards the tundish endwalls.Flow patterns and velocities tangential to the steel-slag interface from the numerical model showed that slag entrainment in both the bare tundish and tundish with a FCD possibly takes place via two mechanisms. First, the slag moves across the steel-slag interface via mass transfer; secondly small velocities tangential to the interface at depths greater than 10 mm below the interface carry the already ‘entrained’ slag into the bulk steel phase. These tangential flow patterns are dominant in the inlet region, hence the high concentration of entrained slag in this region. IntroductionThe tundish serves as the last metallurgical vessel through which steel passes before solidifying in the moulds. It is in the tundish that the last traces of non-metallic inclusions should be removed, otherwise the inclusions carry over to the moulds and cause defects in the steel product. In the tundish, the slag is less dense than the melt and thus resides on the top of the melt. The slag provides a sink into which the non-metallic inclusions float to and dissolve. The slag also protects the melt from air and heat loss. However, when slag is entrained in the melt as a result of increased turbulence or shearing at the steel-slag interface, slag can become a source of nonmetallic inclusions.Numerous studies on flow patterns in the tundish have been carried out since the introduction of the tundish. King This volume contains the 28 papers presented at the Second International Conference on Hydrocyclones, which was held in Bath (England) in September 1984. The format and presentation of the papers are similar to those of the first volume in the series, and this volume con¬tinues the series as an authoritative account of much of the research work associated with hydrocyclones that is being undertaken throughout the world. The volume was produced from camera-ready copy supplied by the authors, but the quality of reproduction is very high and both text and figures are legible throughout the volume. Although most of the work reported deals with the hydrocyclone as a classification device, important sections are devoted to liquid-liquid separations and heavy¬medium separations.

A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.
