During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), some heavy metals and other environmentally harmful elements are liberated into bottom ash. The stricter environmental regulations require a higher immobilization efficiency of the ash before its safe disposal and application. Vitrification is one of the promising options, and has the advantages of high destruction efficiency of organics, high immobilization of heavy metals, and large volume reduction. The main components of the vitrified slag are SiO2, CaO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O and MgO, and the compositions have direct effect on the glass formation during vitrification, and further on the physical and mechanical properties of the slag. To provide essential data for the utilization of bottom ash as vitrified slag, the phase relations and thermodynamic properties of the oxide system need to be systematically investigated. In the present study, the liquidus temperature of the typical vitrified bottom ash slag was determined by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement. High temperature equilibrium experiments were conducted to investigate the phase relations of the sub oxide system of CaO-SiO2-Na2O by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The results show that the melting temperature of the vitrified bottom ash is around 930°C. In the CaO-SiO2-Na2O system with less than 50 mol% SiO2, the liquidus temperature de-creases with increasing amounts of Na2O along the tie-line of Na2O-Ca3Si2O7. Two compounds Na2Ca3Si2O8 and Na4Ca8Si5O20 are identified in the oxide system.

Until recently, in consideration of fundamentals of gravity concentration theory, all computations have been based on determination of particles? fall velocity in an unrestricted medium (hydraulic size). Meanwhile, gravity separation processes are realized under conditions of particles? restricted fall, when important and sometimes decisive role is played by interacting forces of particles, dependent on their varying size, density and shape, i.e., segregation forces. We have developed devices and methods for measuring segregation velocities of fine particles of various size, density and shape during their loosening in air or aqueous medium. Besides, to exclude influence of medium upward flows, loosening was provided by superposition of vertical harmonic oscillations on measuring cell. It was established, that maximum segregation velocities are observed at certain optimal acceleration values and amplitudes of oscillations; excessive loosening leads to mixing and worsening of segregation. Velocity of some particles segregation through others depends on particles? size, density and shape, as well as nature of medium (air, water). Absolute segregation velocities of particles in air medium may reach 1~2 mm/s, in aqueous medium such velocities are by an order smaller. Analysis of rare-metal sands material gravity concentration results showed, that owing to segregation process during gravity separation, fine-size isometric particles of heavy minerals are recovered into gravity concentrates more actively, than larger ones, but more elongated in shape. It is convenient and simple to estimate mineral grains? shape by extent of their oblongness, described as ratio of particle minimal dimension to maximum. Besides, mineral mixtures gravity separation results are directly related to extent of oblongness of heavy particles, recovered in gravity separation process, and also to root-mean-square coefficient of their shape variation. The performed research showed that particles segregation in gravity concentration process plays not a lesser role, than hydrodynamics parameters, and demands further theoretical inquiry and experimental studies.

The main reason of flotation process fluctuations is mixing ores of various properties from various sections of a deposit. Other, also important reasons are changes in parameters of facilities of technological cycle, as well as properties of reagents applied. According to estimates, instability and non-optimized parameters of flotation owe 3% to 6% of valuable component losses. Without ore averaging systems flotation process is characterized by considerable fluctuations of all input, output and intermediate parameters. Stab One more way is optimizing the process, providing for determination and maintaining optimal parameters of the process. In these conditions application of various mathematic models does not allow controlling the process by the way of action on input parameters of the process with further precise reaching required values of output parameters. More effective is to be application of flotation models for solution of questions of choosing and optimizing of automatic control systems. The work presented examples of application mathematic model of flotation process for estimation of effectiveness and choice of parameters of automatic control system that reduces considerably a stage of preliminary studies in elaboration, designing and modernizing automatic control systems.

There are interactions between different minerals from the same ore, minerals and grinding media, and the electrochemical conditions present in the system. Grinding in steel rod and ball mills is a common practice in minerals processing. It is accepted, that the electrochemical interactions between the grinding media and minerals in a grinding mill, influence the corrosive wear of balls/rods and the surface properties of the ground minerals. A complex massive sulphide, Cu-Zn, TAKNAR, Iran, was used for all the experiments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grinding media (dry or wet) on the pulp chemistry and recovery of Cu and Zn in bulk concentrate. 1100 g of ore samples were milled, and mill products with d80=85 and 75 micron in wet and dry grinding methods were produced. Rougher bulk flotation experiments were performed with 550g ore samples, at 30% solids. SIPX in conjunction with Aero238 in 1:2 ratio (48 g/t), was used as mixed collector system, and copper sulphate (200g/t) and MIBC (20 g/t) were employed as sphalerite activator and frother. Lime and High purity Oxygen gas were used for adjusting pH at 8.5 and aeration. The results showed that, more positive pulp potentials were measured when the feed had been ground in a dry environment, and the difference in pulp potentials between the dry and wet ground feed was approximately 250 mV after the grinding stage. In dry grinding method, the recovery of Cu and Zn increased approximately 5 and 10%, respectively. In addition, in dry ground samples, the volume of middling and coarse particles (+100 micron) were more and Dry ground flotation feed had better agreed with using a mixture of collectors. This study covers the investigations based on the electrokinetic and rheological properties to explain the interactions between kaolin minerals and commercially available polyelectrolyte in anionic character. Additional adsorption test were also conducted to support the interaction mechanism. Adsorption tests showed that adsorption densities decrease by increasing the solid content. In-creasing the solids contents from 1% to 30% by weight resulted in the decrease on adsorption from 2.14 mg/g to 1.85 mg/g. Because of its difficulty, the solids ratio at 70% was not studied. However, following to trend of the curve plotted adsorption density-solid ratio, an estimation was made and adsorption density at 70% solid content was extracted from the curve as 1.75~1.80 mg/g. The electrokinetic studies pointed out that the presence of polyelectrolyte increase the zeta potential of kaolin from 40 mV to 60 mV which is reasonable conditions to disperse and stabilize the kaolin slurry and lower the viscosity. When these result of the different tests are combined and considered together, 2 mg/g polyelectrolyte concentration was noted as optimal concentration where adsorption density, viscosity and zeta potential of the slurries give maxima and remain constant after this concentration.

The separation of iron values from a typical Indian iron ore slimes containing 57.2% Fe, 5.81% SiO2 and 7.05% Al2O3 by wet magnetic separation and selective magnetic coating is investigated. The iron phases, which are mostly paramagnetic in nature, have been coated with magnetite or colloidal magnetite in presence of surfactant by manipulating the surface properties of the minerals. The studies have indicated that an iron concentrate containing 62.32% Fe with 66.5% iron recovery can be obtained at medium magnetic intensity of 7.8 kG which is much less compared to normal magnetic intensity of 13 kG to14 kG required for hematite-goethite separation. The performance of this technique with respect to both grade and recovery is superior to conventional magnetic separation or flotation of iron ore slimes.

Technogenic water of ore mining enterprises, nonferrous metals operations, the enterprises of electroplating and instrument making, containing copper in the form of those or other connections can serve as perspective sources on receiving the copper-bearing raw material. Extraction of copper from the given water also solves a problem of water treating from a toxic component that reduces environmental load at evacuation of water in an open basin. The method of case hardening allows extracting copper selectively with reception of a deposit with the content of copper up to 70%. Weakness of the method is its efficiency basically in acid reduction, and also its low degree of copper extraction. On the basis of case hardening the method of galvanic coagulation is devised. It is based on the work of a short-circuited galvanic cell of iron-coke at variable contact of coupled metals components among themselves, cleared by the oxygen of air. The following processes of galvanic coagulation are considered: ? Extraction of copper; ? Formation ferrites of copper; ? Copper sorption on just-aggregated oxide forms of iron. Establishing conditions for passing the given stages provides an opportunity of copper extraction from technogenic water at any value of ??, content of salt and concentration of copper with reception of a compact deposit from which it is possible to extract copper by the known ways of enrichment and metallurgy. Investigations on optimization and intensification of galvanic coagulation with the purpose of reception the maximum rich deposit on copper have shown that the average contents of copper in a solution of 100~200 mg/dm3 the contents of copper in a deposit is 6%~10% at extraction 85%~90%, depending on characteristics of treated technogenic water. Using methods of scanning microscopy it is determined structures, composition and mechanism of phase formation in investigated electro-chemical process. The second stage of galvanic coagulation increases a degree of copper extraction up to 98%~99% that allows returning the cleared waters in circulation for waste recycling or evacuation in an open basin. Nowadays the method of galvanic coagulation is the most acceptable for copper extraction from technogenic water both from the point of view of efficiency and instrument setting that allows applying the method in conditions of the working enterprises.

"Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. Similar trends were observed in plant.INTRODUCTIONlead-zinc sulfide minerals play an important role in the production of lead and zinc metals in the mineral processing industry (Luo, Feng et al. 2016). Positron Emission particle tracking (PEPT), which makes use of a radioactively labeled tracer particle, a positron camera and a tracking algorithm has been shown to be a viable method for studying flow properties in both the pulp and froth phases of flotation cells. Detailed velocity measurements of 300-400 µm glass beads were extracted to assess turbulence from velocity fluctuations in a micro flotation cell. The effects of particle speed and orientation at the instant of attachment events were studied. A minimum speed of 0.16 m/s was needed for a collision to lead to attachment. The most attachment events happen when the particle is directly in line with the inlet tube at 90o.

The observed progress in technology of non-ferrous ores enrichment and condition of machines and equipment in the ores concentrators on the one hand have brought a possibility and on the other resulted in necessity for introduction of modernization actions. Positive results of investigations into influence of chemical modification of selected products of enrichment process on copper ores enrichment results gave possibility for implementation of chemical-flotation technologies of ores enrichment. The substantial development in flotation machines structure has contributed to modernization of flotation process resulting in increase of enrichment efficiency. The paper presents the idea and results of chemical modification of difficult in enrichment semi-products in the technology of copper ores enrichment and the results obtained after application of the modernised technology. The structure of large-volume flotation machines used in various stages of flotation and current situation in modernization of flotation process in copper ores concentrators are also described. The paper presents industrial-scale results of flotation after application of modified flotation reagents of collector group. Introduction of modifiers into the widely used xanthates resulted in increase of copper recovery in concentrate.

Spiral concentrator, which works on the principle of gravity separation, is widely used in the mineral industries for separation of solid particles based on the size and density. In the present study, CFD simulation of the flow profile on a laboratory scale spiral concentrator of height 2.29 m, pitch 0.435 m and width 0.17m was carried out. A single computational domain covering the entire spiral was considered. Volume-of-Fluid algorithm was used to track the interface and predict the flow profile. In the present study the Donor-Acceptor method was used for the calculation of volume fraction in the cell. Simulation results show that the velocity increases as the water flows down due to the convective force and gravitational force, but the viscous force acting in the opposite direction retards the flow. Thus the maximum velocity is attained at turn three at which the viscous force overpowers the other forces and further down the velocity decreases. Measured water depths along the radius of the spiral at various heights were compared with simulated depths, which were in good agreement. The simulated liquid phase velocity profile was used to carry out preliminary studies on the flow profile of solid particles of size 500 micron and densities 2600kg/m3 and 5100kg/m3, based on the Lagrangian model taking into consideration fluid-particle interaction.

The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. And the valuable minerals are magnetite and 2 generated from roasting could be reused for sulphuric acid production. Keywords: pyrrhotite, enhanced flotation, desulphurization

With the general trend across all commodities towards the treatment of lower grade ores, it is becoming increasingly important to develop efficient protocols for comprehensive mineralogical characterisation to allow the development of the most appropriate strategies for processing an ore. In the case of silver, there are more than 200 known silver bearing minerals which can make it challenging to identify them. Knowledge of the deportment of silver within an ore is one of the factors used to determine an appropriate processing strategy. Automated SEM-based tools are commonly used for mineralogical characterisation but the low-grade together with the large number of minerals that are potential hosts for silver means that often, complementary analytical tools must be used in order to properly account for the silver. The work presented in this paper is a demonstration of the approach that should be taken when identifying the deportment of silver in complex ores. Three complex, low-grade silver ores were characterised using the approach. The insights from the mineralogical characterisation were then used to inform the metallurgical testing that was undertaken. The results from the batch flotation testing clearly demonstrate the importance of understanding the mineralogy in order to select the most appropriate metallurgical processes.

"Raw materials are among the main building blocks of a growing economy. Without raw materials, no matter whether it is primary or secondary, production is not possible. Products with high added value require special materials. Recently, worldwide production of some important raw materials mainly comes from a handful of countries, for example: China (Rare Earths Elements (REE)), Russia, South Africa (Platinum Group Elements (PGE)), Democratic Republic of Congo (Cobalt), etc. In the EU as well as in Hungary, the importance of the so called 14 critical raw materials has been recognized. Within the frame of the TÁMOP-4.2.2.A-11/1/KONV-2012-0005 - CriticEL project, the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing in cooperation with the Institute of Mineralogy and Geology of the University of Miskolc are working on the exploration of the primary and secondary sources and developing innovative preparation technologies of critical raw materials in Hungary. The research work showed in this article, focused on the recovery of critical materials from LCD TVs and monitors. There are high deviations in different literatures regarding to concentrations of critical elements in displays (e.g.: indium), probably because of the differences in production year, producers and recovery technologies. During the research - described in this study - a well specified sample of quite large amount of displays had been used. The exact place and shape of the ITO (indium-tin oxide) layer were determined by SEM analysis. The applied preparation technology was developed based on the results of our investigations and by technologies found in the literature. The developed process accomplishes two main parts: the mechanical preparation (mainly the liberation of different display layers, removal of liquid crystal) and the acidic dissolution of indium."

"Recent improvements in the resolution of X-ray computed tomography (CT) make it a promising alternative to traditional time consuming, error prone laboratory procedures for mineral liberation analysis, such as heavy liquid fractioning and measurements on polished sections. All indications are that in a few years CT will be well-established in many laboratories as a rapid technique for accurate liberation studies. In this scenario it would be able to provide liberation spectra or washability data in tens of minutes following sampling. However, although CT is a fast evolving technology, its on-line application is unlikely in the foreseeable future.Dual-energy (DE) radiography is another X-ray technique originating from non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and medical fields, which allows retrieval of the volumetric content of valuable components from two-phase particles in a fraction of second. Two radiographic images at different X-ray energies of a single particle or a monolayer of particles are taken in short time sequence. The thickness of the two phases is calculated particle by particle by image subtraction, whereupon particle grades can be derived. The development of the method for on-line applications requires the presentation of non-overlapping particles in the gap in the X-ray source detector measurement couple. Straightforward extension of the principle to multiphase systems is not possible. The paper reviews the state of the art of these two techniques as applied to mineral liberation problems."

Possibilities of the analysis of potential energy of bubble-particle interaction on the basis of extended DLVO theory are discussed. Interaction energies of mineral silica, coal and pyrite particles with contact angles from 20 to 100 degrees and air bubbles in neutral and alkaline solutions are analyzed. It is shown that for hydrophilic silica, the formation of particle-bubble complexes (either in the area of primary or secondary potential minima) is impossible due to the high potential barriers (from 6000 to 140000 kT)and low values of the attraction force. There is shown that for coal and pyrite particles the energy of interaction vs. particle-bubble distance strongly depends on pH value. Improvement of floatability of minerals by the hydrophobization of their surface by collectors leads to the eliminating of potential barriers and the formation of the stable complexes of minerals and air bubbles in the area of primary potential minimum. In addition, due to hydrophobization of coal and pyrite changing pH has practically no influence on the energy of interaction. There are discussed results of the numerical calculations of normalized interaction forces in particle-bubble systems on the nanometer distances for pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite at contact angles up to 85° in comparison with the experimental data. The values of adhesion force for hydrophobized particles of coal and pyrite to air bubbles are about 10-5 N, that indicates stability of the formed flotation complexes. Examples of using the long-range and high-energy effect of hydrophobic interactions for improving minerals floatability are discussed. There are illustrated minerals wettability changes induced by the adsorption of thiol collector and hydrophobic polymer. Possibilities of flocculation and flotation of mineral slimes due the polymer-collector hydrophobic interactions are shown. "With the increasing depletion of high-grade ore deposits, smarter mineral processing solutions are required to achieve sustainable and economic methods for mining and processing low-grade deposits. In order to make the treatment of low-grade deposits economically viable, large quantities of rock need to be mined and processed. The associated infrastructure costs (power, water supply, accommodation and support services, waste storage) result in a substantial penalty on the project, from both capital and operating cost perspectives. As a consequence, the challenge for the mining industry is to overcome the associated rise in energy and water consumption as well as increased project complexity when processing large amounts of low grade ore. Ore sorting technologies have been used for many years, predominantly on small projects, enabling the upgrade of marginal ores. Several sorting methods based on characteristics including specific gravity, radiometry, colour, particle size, grade and other detectable physical characteristics have been employed. The challenge for large low-grade ore bodies is to crush and sort at coarser rock size in order to minimise specific energy consumption in comminution and to reduce waste disposal costs. For large projects, the understanding of the economic impact of ore sorting is limited. The economic drivers include plant head grade improvement; sorting infrastructure capital, operating and maintenance costs; waste material handling and other environmental costs related to waste disposal. This paper analyses the economic impact of ore sorting in a large mineral processing operation. The focus of the analysis is to compare NPVs for a circuit including screening and ore sorting stages. A project for processing an Australian copper sulphide ore is considered as an example for this study."

"This study gives an insight into non-destructive testing methods suitable for porosity analysis at a small scale, firstly summarizing relevant state-of-the-art technology and pending patents, secondly realizing and documenting the start-up of the VHX-2000 digital microscope by the manufacturer Keyence and thirdly demonstrating practical application with the extended analysis of three fundamentally different agglomerates for which important application-related parameters are determined. Various analysis procedures on the different agglomerates the efficient and timesaving operational features of the digital microscope are outlined. Firstly an analysis of flax fibre agglomerates determines the process conditions best suited to produce agglomerates with specific properties by determining sphericity, cubicity, density and porosity as well as fibre damage and alteration. Secondly the production of iron-hydroxide - hemp-fibre agglomerates serves to obtain information on porosity values as a result of a cauterization of the fibres. The third analysis provides estimations of porosity values for acid-treated lignin agglomerates. Measurements were carried out with compact dry agglomerates and with soaked, expanded agglomerates, determining factors for total water carrying capacity. Practicability of non-destructive testing by digital microscopy is demonstrated and explained concerning the applications in this study by obtaining definite structural findings about the analysed agglomerates. Information on its operation is made available by a practice-oriented manual for the VHX-2000 digital microscope. Further suggestions for more in-detail analysis results with different instruments are given."

The biological stage of reclamation is the third final stage in remediation the damaged mining terrains, which is carried out following the completion of the mining technical stage. The biological stage of reclamation is carried out through restoration of the vegetation layer. The biological reclamation includes all activities related to the introduction into the terrain of vegetation, microorganisms, insects, and animals, with the acceleration of the succession and creating conditions for a sustainable ecosystem close to the natural one. It comprises of all anti erosion and other activities such as the preparation of the land for growing agricultural crops, sowing grass seeds, planting seedlings, amelioration of the soil and further care for the vegetation until its final place on the land. Mineral and organic-mineral ameliorants for biological reclamation were studied. The basic mineral ameliorant is Bulgarian natural zeolites. The zeolitic-rich tuff samples provided from Golobradovo deposit was characterized by their chemical and mineralogical composition and ion exchange properties and X ray analysis. The average content of clinoptilolite was found to be more than 80%. The materials had ion exchange capacity (NH4+) varying from 100 to 110 meq/100g. Chemical modifications of natural clinoptilolites were made in order to form active phases of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and microelements. Slow-acting mineral ameliorant was developed. Organic-zeolite substrate for biological reclamation was developed. This new product is a mechanical mixture of organo-matter and modified zeolites. Agro-chemical parameters of new ameliorants were determined. The substrates including studied overburden dump soil and mineral or organo-mineral ameliorants are produced.
