Large quantities of electrical and electronic equipments are discarded at the end-of-life (EOL) in different industries and house hold applications. Their disposal is creating a challenging environmental problem due to the presence of hazardous metals and non-metallic materials such as epoxy resins and plastics including brominated flame retardants etc particularly in printed circuit boards (PCBs). The recovery valuable metals and separation of hazardous materials from discarded PCBs will not only conserve the resources but also mitigate the environmental pollution. From a recycling point of view for a sustainable society, the studies have been carried out for the recovery of metal values from EOL-PCBs of DVD video players (DVD-PCBs) and vacuum cleaners (VC-PCBs) using physical beneficiation techniques. The concentration of the metals was found to be 43 wt.% and 30 wt.% in DVD-PCBs and VC-PCBs, respectively. Both the PCBs samples were ground in a hammer mill after cutting and their size analysis was carried out. The liberation of the metallic and non-metallic fractions was investigated under the microscope for different size fractions. Subsequently, froth flotation and pneumatic air separation studied were carried out to enrich the metallic constituents. The studies showed the enrichment of metals in coarser particles (-1000 +150 µm) and non-metals in the finer particles -150 µm following mechanical recycling process. A grade of 90 % with 75% recovery was achieved by froth flotation, but lower grade and recovery of 75% and 65% respectively were obtained by pneumatic separation with -1500 µm powders for DVD-PCBs. A grade of 86% metal was obtained by froth flotation with 76% recovery in the case of VC-PCBs. The lower grade of 65% with almost same recovery was achieved during pneumatic separation studies due to lower concentration of metals in VC-PCBs. The studies also showed that the froth flotation is an efficient process for enrichment of metals from both the samples. The process is environmental friendly as no chemicals are employed during entire processing. The higher recovery and grade of metal is expected to be obtained on a large scale beneficiation process.

Micro-fine disseminated molybdenite was ground in a laboratory stirred mill using steel media and zirconium media respectively. The floatability of ground molybdenite and slurry chemistry was investigated. It was found that the total recovery of ground molybdenite using zirconium media was higher while the pH and Eh of the slurry are lower than that using steel media. When steel media was used, iron oxy-hydroxides had been generated coated on the surface of molybdenite, and decreased the floatability of molybdenite, especially of the -10µm particles. The iron and lead oxy-hydroxides was generated by the reaction between steel media with pyrite and galena associated with molybdenite. It was also found that changing the grinding media to inert can benefit the flotation of molybdenite. "This paper focuses on the beneficiation of the REE-Y-Nb-Zr complex ore from the ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ deposit, Mongolia. Pre-concentration based on mineralogical studies was investigated at the Unit of Mineral Processing (AMR) and the Institute of Applied Mineralogy and Economic Geology of RWTH Aachen University. In order to minimize the energy consumption in the most energy intensive grinding process a pre-concentration process using dry magnetic separation of particle sizes coarser than required for the liberation of the valuable ore minerals was designed. Dry magnetic separation in the particle size range of 63-250 µm is suitable as the pre-concentration method, due to the intergrowth of REE-Y-Nb-Zr bearing minerals with magnetic minerals determined by QEMSCAN© analysis. The results showed that a mass reduction of 45.3 wt.-% at high recoveries of REE, Y, Nb and Zr (90 wt.-% and higher) in the pre-concentration product was achieved at the beginning of the process chain. The improvement of process efficiency as shown in this study depends on the abundance and association of minerals affecting the magnetic properties (e.g. hematite) of the ores. Therefore, these mineralogical parameters are as important as grain size and ore grade for the geometallurgical evaluation of potential mining operations at ‘Khalzan Buregtei’.INTRODUCTION Polymetallic deposits containing other critical elements besides REE have the advantage of being robust to economic development and fluctuations of individual metal prices. (Gronen et al., 2016). These deposits can host economic grades of heavy and light REE, Y, Nb, Ta, Zr in complex mineralogical compositions. About 120 deposits of this type are known worldwide, including ‘Norra Kärr’ in Sweden, ‘Strange Lake’ in Canada and ‘Khalzan Buregtei’ in Mongolia which are not valued economically yet. "MANGOTE Surface oxidizied mine is a gold-bearing deposit in Congo's Mai-Ndombe Province. In the past decades, the ore has been exploited in a crude way by local farmers, which directly causes the severe processing difficulty and lack of economy of cyanide leaching. Hunan Research Institute for Non-ferrous metals (HRIM) is currently investigating options to recover gold through understanding the mineralogical characteristics of MANGOTE surface oxidized ore. Chemical analysis , X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANing electron microscopy (QEMSCAN ) were conducted on samples from mine site. The bulk analysis results showed that gold separation of gold from gangue minerals was feasible after grinding the ore samples to 86.53% -74µm and adjusting the pulp specific weight at 100g/L, and gravity separation was conducted with using spiral chute after grading of fine particles. The research results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of abandoned ore and economy of comprehensive utilization that might be directive experience to similar cases. The occurrence of gold in the ore refers to the form of gold in the ore.Generally the existing state of gold can be divided into four major categories according to the viewpoint of the dispersion system: independent minerals and gold, a coarse dispersed system;colloidal gold, a colloidal dispersion; solid solution gold, is atomic ion dispersion; adsorptive gold, according to the adsorbed particle is the micelle or ion, respectively is a colloidal dispersion or ion dispersion(Mao, S. D., & Yang, R. S. 2009; Liu, J. A fast, reliable, and low cost characterization of ore minerals products, as they result from different processing actions, represents one of the most challenging targets in the mineral processing sector. Today different techniques are available according to different sampling strategies and analytical principles. In this paper, the possibilities offered by the adoption of hyperspectral imaging based sensing units working both at micro- and macro-scale are presented and discussed. According to the different phases and stages of ore minerals and products characterization, and starting from the analyses of the detected hyperspectral firms, it is thus possible to derive useful information about mineral flow stream properties and their physical-chemical attributes. This last aspect can be utilized to define innovative process mineralogy strategies and to implement on-line procedures at processing level. The present study discusses the effects related to the adoption of different hardware configurations, the utilization of different logics to perform the analysis and the selection of different algorithms according to the different characterization, inspection, and quality control actions to apply. "Due to limited water resources in mineral processing plants, increasing the efficiency of iron tailing dewatering system in order to obtain more usable water is very important. In this research, flocculation process, as one of the best method for water recovery, was investigated by using one organic cationic and three anionic types of flocculants with different dosages (10, 20, 30 g/ton) and iron ore tailing slurry (8 % w/w solidity) in series of graduated cylinders and obtained results were compared. it is observed that for tailing sample, the anionic flocculants have a significant effect on the settling rate of solid particles compared to the cationic types. Furthermore, effects of temperature (10, 23 and 43 ºC) and pH (2, 7 and 12) on the rate of settlement and turbidity was studied by utilizing the best flocculant. Findings showed that by increasing the amount of flocculant dosage, sedimentation rate went up and turbidity decreased. Comparison the out-put data of tests indicated that at temperature 23 °C and pH=7, the best results for both of faster settling rate and producing more clear water were reached. It should be considered that lower temperature has a more negative effect on the sedimentation rate and overflow water quality. So it will be predicted that for cold seasons, the consumption of the flocculant powder would be higher than the moderate or warm seasons. Also, coagulation/flocculation was evaluated by applying organic cationic coagulant added to anionic flocculant in three different times. Different ratios of coagulant to flocculant was examined (70%:30%, 50%:50%, 30%:70%) as well. Overall, utilizing coagulant had desirable influence on sedimentation experiments and obtaining high quality water. 1- INTRODUCTION In mineral Factories, among the important processes, solid-liquid separation process due to limited resources of water is very important and operates on iron ore tailing in settling tank as thickener in order to gain clear water for preventing water loss and applying again in plant units (Ciftci and Serhat Isik, 2017). Iron ore tailing include inharmonious compounds of iron oxides, silicates and aluminum-silicates. The percentage of solid in the tailing usually changes between 5 and 10 percent (Dash et al., 2011). One of the major problem about dewatering of tailing in thickener is solid-liquid separation of slurries with high stability because of fine particles. It means that rate of sedimentation is very slow and recovered water quality is inappropriate. This issue can be solved to a large extent by factors such as pH control, ionic strength and flocculation/coagulation process which results in aggregation of particles so that settlement by gravity is happened (Dash et al., 2011)."

There are some problems in the beneficiation of fine-grained oxidized iron mineral such as high cost, severe sliming, poor results and low recovery due to the fine disseminated size of the mineral. Taking several representative types of finely-disseminated oxidized iron minerals as examples, the author analyzed the main difficulties in the beneficiation of such kind of ores and discussed the existing problems in grinding-classification, technological process, flotation reagents and separation equipments and the resolvents of these problems.

A close association of fine gold with pyrite and arsenopyrite is observed at many gold ore deposits. Gold forms and gold distribution in sulfides of different deposits were studied. A comprehensive method including optical spectrum analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, high-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis was used for the de-tailed investigation of the defectiveness of the structure of pyrites from different deposits. It was shown that gold content in pyrites varied from 1.5 g/t to 100 g/t compared with 30 g/t to 230 g/t in arsenopyrites. The nature and arrangement of inner inclusions of foreign minerals in pyrites as well as occurrence of fractures and macro- and microdefects were examined. Iron, sulfur and arsenic contents in all pyrite samples were determined. Chemical composition of the detected inclusions was defined. Parameters of submicroscopic structure of pyrite were estimated using X-ray Fourier line shape analysis. Estimation of real structure characteristics with calculation of submicroscopic D-blocks and root-mean-square lattice deformation 2()evalues was performed. Defectiveness of the pyrite structure can be defined by the following parameters: K?1 and K?2 reflection resolution and its intensity within high Bragg angles; S content to Fe content ratio; the arsenic content and the local variation in its concentration within the pyrite grain; the size of submicroscopic blocks and the crystal lattice disturbance value. The performed analysis showed some relationships between these parameters and refractoriness of the pyrite concentrates. It was observed that at S/Fe ratio close to or higher than stoichiometry and at a low arsenic content (less than one per cent) pyrite concentrates were not refractory. The analysis results showed that concentrates of the Beryozovskaya gold plant (0.02~0.07 As%) and concentrates of the Kommunarovskaya gold plant (less than 0.05 As%) as well as some pyrites from the Sukhoi Log gold deposit had the same characteristics. It was found that average arsenic content did not excess 0.2 per cent. Arsenic distribution within the grain of all these pyrites was uniform. At S/Fe ratio lower than or close to stoichiometry and at high arsenic content (more than one per cent) and significant variation in its distribution within a pyrite grain the pyrite concentrates are refractory. Such pyrites are typical for the Sukhoi Log, the Bakyrchik and the Mardzhanbulak gold deposits. Direct correlation between arsenic and gold contents, in particular, in fine grains of pyrite was observed by many researches. This correlation was explained by impregnation of arsenopyrite which normally contains more gold than arsenic pyrites. The analyses results showed that no arsenopyrite impregnation was found: arsenic distribution within the grain was uniform but its concentration varied greatly. Such pyrite concentrates are more refractory. This paper presents the results of analyses of sulfides to determine the amenability of the associated gold recovery by hydro- and pyrometallurgy.

"Comprehensive utilization of Bi and Sn from the tin-associated polymetallic tailings by “gravity separation – flotation combination process” has been studied, which was verified that the novel process is an effective method to deal with the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic tailings. In this investigation, ore property analysis and magnetism analysis of pyrrhotite were conducted to research and develop reasonable beneficiation flowsheet. The results of ore property analysis present that pyrrhotite was not closely related to bismuth and tin minerals. Particle size analysis results indicated that pyrrhotite was mainly in the form of fine particles. The magnetic analysis results show that pyrrhotite was distribution in all the three types of pyrrhotite in a single mining area, which indicated that variable magnetism of with different crystal structure pyrrhotite. The process of “low intensity magnetic separation - high intensity magnetic separation” shown an excellent adaption for the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic ore compared with the single flotation process based on the magnetism variable of pyrrhotite. The results of whole process test indicated that a bismuth coarse concentrate assaying 5.63% of Bi at 81.77% recovery was obtained, which treat the conditions for the Bi-S separation flotation. In addition, the content of sulfur in the tin concentrate decreased from 2.5% to 1.5%, which provided a new reference for other tin-associated polymetallic tailings. INTRODUCTION Tin has been applied extensively in catalytic chemistry, gas sensors, tin plating, and plumbing. Tin-bearing polymetallic ores have been the important deposit types to recycle tin with the rapid depletion of mineral resources. At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

Poor floatability of fine particles is known to be the main cause of the low recovery of ilmenite in Panzhihua, which is the largest titanium mine of China. To get an optimum ilmenite recovery, selective flocculation, and flotation of fine ilmenite was investigated through flotation tests, particle size analysis, zeta potential tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows flocculation effect for both ilmenite and titanaugite without selectivity, while selective flocculation could be realized by the combination of water glass and CMC. It is because that competitive adsorption would take place on these two kinds of mineral when water glass and CMC are used together. On the surface of ilmenite, the adsorption ability of CMC is stronger than that of water glass, so that CMC can absorb to the same extent irrespective of the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of water glass and ilmenite particles is flocculated by CMC. The same cannot be said of the titanaugite phase as water glass strongly adsorbs onto the titanaugite, and the adsorption of CMC is hindered. Therefore, the titanaugite particles keep dispersion. Furthermore, the flotation of fine ilmenite particles is feasible as the ilmenite floccules could react with sodium oleate. In the flotation separation of Panzhihua ilmenite ore, the recovery of TiO2 increased from 52.63% to 68.28% by selective flotation. Keywords: ilmenite, flotation, selective flocculation, adsorption

Particle characteristics such as size, density, liberation and magnetic susceptibility play vital role in magnetic separation technique. To understand the performance of magnetic separation process for chromite beneficiation industry, particle characteristics need to be analysed. However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming task, thus only minimal amounts of this type of data are available in the literature. Several new methods are being developed, that will produce the required mineralogical and liberation data to provide processing information rapidly and inexpensively. Among these, QEMSCAN is a unique and advanced characterisation equipment used for liberation analysis for different ore whereas S.G. Franz Isodynamic Separator for determining the magnetic susceptibility. In Indian chromite deposits, the content of iron bearing minerals in the ore is typical which controls the Cr:Fe ratio in the product while treating in gravity based beneficiation plant. In the present investigation, detailed characterisation of two distinct chromite ore samples from Sukinda chromite deposit, India, was investigated which includes advanced mineral characterisation using QEMSCANand magnetic susceptibility measurement by using Frantz Isodynamic separator, etc.. Presence of haematite and gibbsite along with chromite mineral were identified as major gangue minerals in the high grade ore from XRD pattern whereas Goethite, Quartz, Haematite, Kaolinite, Ringwoodite identified in the low grade ore. The mass magnetic susceptibility of low grade ore is very high 5.2 cm3/g compared to 2.7 cm3/g for high grade ore, due to the presence of abundant quantity of iron bearing minerals. Subsequently, these two types of ore were subjected for magnetic separation for improving Cr:Fe ratio by using different magnetic separators viz. induced roll magnetic separator, wet high intensity magnetic separator, rare earth roll magnetic separator, rare earth drum magnetic separator. The results of magnetic separation studies indicated that, Cr: Fe ratio of the chromite ores can be improved to 3.99 and 1.97 from the feed assaying 3.09 and 1.29 respectively. Studies on rare earth roll magnetic separator indicated that both the ores were upgraded to a maximum Cr:Fe ratio level at optimised condition. Progress is reported on capturing the effects of gangue chemistry in the context of a comprehensive stockpile heap leach model for leaching copper sulfide ores, employing leading edge computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology. The stockpile is a complex multi-phase process, comprising of a solid porous media, with complex fluid flow, gas and liquid phases, competing solid-liquid reactions, dissolution of minerals and transport through the heap. The model accounts for many of the challenging physical and chemical features of the heap, including transport and reactions kinetics for the important copper and iron sulfide minerals, ferrous oxidation, bacterial effects, thermal energy, acid and sulfate balances. In this contribution, the model has been extended to incorporate dissolution of various species from gangue reactions and precipitation of hydronium and potassium jarosite, ferric hydroxide, alunite, and gypsum. The effect of aeration on the simulation of a copper sulfide heap leach is provided as an example.

Joda East Iron Mine, one of the captive iron ore sources of Tata steel, located in the state of Odisha in eastern India caters to approximately 45% of the iron ore requirement of the Jamshedpur Steel Plant. The iron ore occurring in the mine having high in iron content along with high in alumina. Clay and gibbsite are the predominant mineral phases present as surface coating, fracture filling and/or free occurring and are responsible for alumina content higher. Alumina in iron ore impacts the techno-economic performance of a steel plant by impacting sintering and blast furnace productivity. The impact is even higher when it comes to fine ore used in the blast furnaces in the form of sinter as it constitutes a major portion of the blast furnace burden. Therefore, it is beneficial to upgrade iron ore in the mine head and to reduce alumina before it is subjected to agglomeration. Mineralogical test works reveal, that alumina in iron fines is mainly associated with the clay attached to the hematite particles, either free or interlocked to a very fine size. The paper describes the efforts made to reduce alumina in the iron fines in Joda East processing plant, without much of capital investment for a very sophisticated fines beneficiation circuit. In this process, a suitable dispersant was added in the plant that dispersed the masked slime coating over the iron ore fines, thereby making a better quality iron ore fines with reduced alumina content. The alumina in fines improved by 0.2 units? means from a label of 2.4-2.6 % reduced to 2.2-2.4 %. With this initiative, not only the primary objective of alumina reduction is met but also it has given substantial benefit in reduction of silica and as well as moisture in product. This moisture reduction also has given bottom line impact by reducing idle freight and royalty.

Based on the scientific investigations on mechanochemical synthesis of metal sulphides from metals or metal compounds and sulphur or sulphur compounds, the article describes the industrial production of nanoscale metal sulphides. Special operational conditions such as inert atmosphere, size and type of the grinding balls, grinding time and specific energy input are taken into consideration. A system configuration for the manufacturing of sulphides at a capacity of 100 kg/h is presented.

Based on the differences in hardness and density of diaspore and aluminosilicate minerals which usually exist in Chinese diasporic bauxite, It is analysed that bauxite of this kind is difficult to be separated effectively by classification and normal gravity separation, and cyclonic centrifugal field was thus proposed to be carried out, in which classification can take place according to the size difference resulted from selective grinding, what?s more, the separation function according to density difference is expected to take effect at the same time, and then cyclonic separation tests for diasporic bauxite of A/S 4.39 and grinding 61.90% -0.074mm were carried out tentatively. The results showed that the accretion of feed pressure can offer strong enough centrifugal force for cyclonic separation with result that separation function according to density difference is effectively intensified, by the increasing of this parameter, underflow and overflow of A/S 7.64 and 2.18 can be processed at the same time, and the recovery of Al2O3 in underflow is 71.78%; judging by the flow ratio, the spatial locality envelope of zero vertical velocity do constringe to the vertical axis by the enlarging of diameter ratio of apex to vortex, overflow and underflow of A/S 2.08 and 6.5~7.0 can be processed by controlling this structural parameter, which is possible to offer a technological method for low-grade bauxite to de-sliming beforehand.

It is now common to have archival history of thousands of sensors sampled every second over long time. Yet we frequently have process engineers complain:??.We are drowning in data but starving for information??. How can these rich data sets be put to use? This paper addresses the issue of information and knowledge extraction from data with emphasis on process and performance monitoring including fault detection and isolation. Most of the major plant, factory, process, equipment and tool disruptions are avoidable, and yet preventable fault detection and diagnosis strategies are not the norm in most industries. It is not uncommon to see simple and preventable faults disrupt the operation of an entire integrated manufacturing facility. For example, faults such as malfunctioning sensors or actuators, inoperative alarm systems, poor controller tuning or configuration can render the most sophisticated control systems useless. Such disruptions can cost in the excess of $1 million per day and on the average they rob the plant of 7% of its annual capacity. Over the last decade the fields of multivariate statistics and data visualization and analysis methods have merged to develop powerful sensing and condition-based monitoring systems for predictive fault detection and diagnosis.These methods rely on the notion of sensor fusion whereby data from many sensors or units are combined with process information, such as physical connectivity of process units, to give a holistic picture of health of an integrated plant. Such methods are at a stage where these strategies are being implemented for off-line and on-line deployment. The impact of mining in Zambia has been to create a development corridor along the line of rail to the Copperbelt Province, where hitherto, mining was concentrated, and then to develop a large consolidated high-density economic zone covering an area of about 72 km by 60km. This area is home to a number of very large integrated copper/cobalt mining complexes. The mining zone has expanded to the Northwestern Province in the last 10 years, where the largest copper mine in Africa now exists, having produced about 300 000 tonnes of copper in 2011. The total output of the Zambian mining industry is now about 820 000 tonnes per annum with projections of reaching 1.5 million by 2015, due to new Greenfield investments expected to come online by then. These new mining industry developments have come on the back of strong and sustained high base metal prices, in the last 10 years or so, due to demand mainly from China and India. This new lease of life has increased the contribution of the sector to the national treasury. The mining industry in Zambia has undergone a very important ownership restructuring with the sale of the previously Government owned parastatal, Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) which dominated the sector, to allow for private sector participation. The privatization process lasted from about 1995 to about 2002. The recent growth of the mining sector has unfortunately not been matched by an adequate supply of skilled manpower for various reasons. These include: (i) A lack of strong in-house training strategies by the new mine owners (ii) Decrease in industry support to the training institutions (iii) The demise of and restructuring of ZCCM which has consequently limited the Government human resources planning tools for the mining sector (iv) The cyclic nature for the fortunes of the sector has lead to fluctuating interest of student recruitment into training institutions (v) Limitations, both staff and equipment, in the training institutions (vi) A re-structuring of the training institutions This paper examines the current status, and student output from tertiary training institutions for the mining sector in Zambia. This is then compared to the skilled labour demands of the sector. The various cause and effect issues are considered and a proposal on how this skills gap could be addressed sustainably is proposed. "The most common comminution testing methods and the associated analytical procedures provide average values and do not capture the variability in breakage behaviour of ore particles. Therefore, plant designs and process performance predictions use only average values; hence, the inherent variability that exists within an ore domain translates into variation in process performance. This paper discusses the drawbacks of using the average approach to impact comminution testing and plant design. It considers breakage intensity from a single-particle testing perspective. To clearly delineate breakage behaviour of each broken particle, an experimental technique using the JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) has been developed by which actual comminution energy per particle and breakage intensities were measured directly. Four different ore types in ranges of -45+37.5mm and -22.4+19mm were tested at three energy levels of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 kWh/t and six energy levels of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 4.0 kWh/t, respectively. Sieved results of individual particles, notionally, t5, t10 and t50 showed the presence of large variability in their breakage behaviour, which was not captured by the standard JK impact breakage testing approach. In addition, the original JKMRC model is modified by introducing a third parameter, ‘Emint10’ which describes the minimum energy required to produce the minimum percent t10 for a given ore type and its significance is tested statistically. These results suggest that the analysis of breakage variability may lead to more robust plant designs. Perhaps, the most useful insight from this work is to extend single particle breakage model developed by JKMRC to a comminution percentile envelope which may provide a more detailed picture of ore breakage variability. INTRODUCTION Rock consists of mineral grains, pores, voids and cracks that may differ markedly in size/density which make rock a heterogeneous material by nature. The degree of heterogeneity in rock affects its breakage characteristics where these variations increase local differential strain and stress within a stressed rock (Scholz, 1968) and it depends on many factors such as rock genesis, alterations, etc. One important aspect of this heterogeneous feature is presence of a large amount of experimental scatter in rock breakage results when considered from a quantitative perspective (Bieniawski, 1967; Liu, Roquete, Kou, & Lindqvist, 2004)."
