"CANADA'S ECONOMY TODAY is about two-fifths larger than it was six years ago, as measured by the total volume of production of goods and services. Such an achievement has been a rare phenomenon in Canada's first one hundred years. Excluding the forced-draft expansions which took place under war-time conditions, perhaps only the first decade of this century recorded a performance of greater dimensions, when, with massive immigration, the opening up of the West and a powerful array of well-de-signed development policies, the country was looking forward confidently to a great future of nation-building in the twentieth century.What makes Canada's over-all economic advance since 1961 all the more remarkable is that six years ago there was virtually no one in this country who anticipated an expansion of such dimensions. Back in the buoyant conditions of 1956-57, perhaps such an achievement would not have seemed beyond our grasp. After 1957, however, Canada stumbled through an extended period of slow economic growth, high unemployment and substantial and widespread under-utilization of its productive capacity. By the early 1960's, conditioned by the emergence of substantial, persistent and pervasive slack in the economy, t h e r e were few Canadians bold enough to anticipate that their economy was about to embark on a Great Expansion. However, this •is, in fact, what occurred. Beginning early in 1961, Canada moved forward into a sweeping advance which grew into the longest and largest peacetime business expansion in Canada's first century as a nation -a truly great expansion by any standard of measurement. This strong thrust has moved Canada into the front ranks of over-all economic expansion among the industrially advanced nations in the 1960's."

Although the metal silver has been known and prized from very ancient times, it is in the New World that the greatest silver camps have been found. This is shown in the following comparison: [] For the last few years, the World's annual production of silver has averaged about 240 million ounces troy. Of this total, the North American Continent contributes approximately three quarters, Mexico leading with 38 per cent, followed by the United States with 27 per cent, and Canada with nearly 9 per cent.[] Of the largest silver producers in Canada, the Sullivan takes first place. Although primarily famous as a lead and zinc mine, it produced, in 1926, more than 4.5 million ounces of silver. The Premier mine, in northern British Columbia, produced more than 3 million ounces. In Ontario, the largest producers in 1926 were the Nipissing mine, .with 1.9 million ounces, and the Keeley mine, with 1. 7 million ounces. The Mining Corporation produced 1.1 million ounces from mines in the Cobalt district proper, and an equal amount in South Lorrain; while from the Castle-Trethewey mine, in Gowganda, there was an output of slightly less than one million ounces.

"GeneralWabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of seven steel companies and Pickands Mather & Co. The mining and concentrating facilities are located in southwestern Labrador and the pelletizing and shiploading facilities are at Pointe Noire, 200 miles south, near the town of Sept-lies.The operation is based on a 5 ½ sq. mi. specular hematite deposit with a reserve of 375 million tons of concentrate. Annual production capacity is rated at 6 million tons of pellets per year. The final upgrading process utilizes high-tension separation of silica following wet autogenous grinding, spiral gravity separation and fluo-solids drying. The concentrate is railed in closed cars to Pointe Noire. The concentrate is reground dry and pelletized on Dravo Lurgi travelling grate machines to produce an oxide pellet with 65.5% Fe, 3.0% Si02, 1.95% Mn and 93.5% Tumble Index.HistoryPlant operations commenced in 1965 with a concentrator capacity of 5.3 million tons per year and a pelletizing capacity of 4.8 million tons per year. The original facilities for classifying the crude ore into fine and coarse fractions for storage purposes before reblending as autogenous mill feed were found to be unnecessary and were by-passed after plant startup. Capacity of the operation was increased to 6.0 million tons of pellets per year in 1968. This increased capacity required the installation of an additional160 cleaner spirals in the ore dressing plant, a new 5000 hp ball mill, three balling circuits and increased cooling air capacity in the pellet plant.In 1970, the regrind circuit in the pellet plant was converted to dry grinding and a significant reduction in grinding media consumption and maintenance costs was realized. A ninth grinding mill of 5000 hp capacity was installed to compensate for the reduced capacity in going from wet to dry grinding."

"Grinding tests were conducted on an oxidized copper-cobalt ore using a pear-shaped ball mill. Twelve mono-sized ore fractions were prepared and wet ground batchwise. The mill was run for 0.5 to 30 min intervals. The shortest interval provided data more closely related to the breakage function (B) because less secondary breakage was hypothesized. Some selection function (S) and B parameters were determined. Remaining parameters were estimated using a population balance model simulator. To evaluate the kinetics model, an unsized ore sample was also milled. Predicted and measured particle size distributions (PSDs) agreed well, suggesting that S and B parameters can be used for continuous operation mass balances.RÉSUMÉ Des essais de broyage ont été menés sur un minerai oxydé de cuivre-cobalt à l’aide d’un broyeur à boulets piriforme. Douze fractions de minerai de dimension unique ont été préparés et broyés en voie humide en lots. Le broyeur était mis en route à des intervalles de 0,5 à 30 minutes. INTRODUCTIONSize reduction of solids is a very energy intensive and highly inefficient process. It consumes approximately 5% of the electricity produced worldwide (Rhodes, 1998), and more than 50% of the total energy used in mineral processing plants (Walkiewicz, Lindroth, & Clark, 1996). An increase in grinding efficiency can therefore result in significant reductions in operating costs. This often amounts to determining the optimal design configurations for milling an ore sample in a laboratory mill under standard conditions. Prior to optimizing the milling stage, the requirements for downstream processing in terms of particle size distribution (PSD) need to be understood because low liberation and overgrinding will lead to future problems. Once this is done, it is also important to clearly understand the breakage properties of the ore. The kinetics of size reduction in tumbling mills are often determined using two probabilistic functions: selection and breakage (Austin & Luckie, 1972). Knowledge of the selection and breakage functions also enables the prediction of the PSD for a given ore sample."

"A review of blast designs and improved blasting practices at the EkatiTM diamond mine is presented along with the results of three blast-monitoring experiments. Blast monitoring was undertaken to investigate blast damage mechanisms in the mine’s well jointed rock mass. Rock mass damage caused by production, pre-shear and wall control blasts was measured. EkatiTM uses 270 mm holes for production blasting, and 165 mm holes loaded with a decoupled charge for pre-shearing. The production blasts are loaded with bulk emulsion/ANFO blends. The mine plan involves using 30 m double benches. A 30 m high pre-shear is drilled and blasted prior to the production blasting that is done with sequential 15 m benches. This paper summarizes the monitoring equipment and data gathered to date. IntroductionThe EkatiTM diamond mine is located about 300 km northeast of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The mine is a joint venture of BHP Diamonds Inc. (80%) and geologists Charles Fipke and Stewart Blusson (10% each). The EkatiTM mine is Canada’s first diamond mine and BHP is the operator. The mine is accessed by air and by a winter ice road.The first kimberlite pipe mined at EkatiTM is known as the Panda pipe. The Panda open pit mine will have a total depth of 315 m (Fig. 1), a width of about 600 m, and a 50° overall slope. Initial ore production is 9000 tonnes per day.This paper summarizes the pre-strip blasting and the evolution of the production and wall control blast designs from 1997 to 2000. The initial blast designs and the rationale behind subsequent changes that took place are presented along with the techniques currently in use.The paper also briefly presents an experiment done to measure the rock mass response to blasting. Three blasts were instrumented with geophones, gas pressure sensors and time domain reflectometry cables. A brief summary of the instrumentation and data gathered is included."

"The Red-Chris porphyry Cu-Au deposit is located between Ealue and Kluea lakes, southeast of the village of Iskut on the Stewart Cassiar highway in northwestern British Columbia. It was explored by Texasgulf Inc., in a joint venture with Great Plains Development Company of Canada, Ltd. and Silver Standard Mines Ltd., during the period 1973 to 1980. Exploration resumed in 1994, following acquisition of the interests originally held by Texasgulf and Great Plains Development by American Bullion Minerals Ltd.Prospectors were first drawn to the area by prominent limonitic stain zones exposed in creek gullies in the western part of the property. These zones are developed on the alteration halo at the western periphery of the deposit. The potential ore zones do not crop out and were first exposed in a bulldozer trench excavated in 1971. Subsequent exploration was by percussion and diamond drilling, guided to some extent by induced polarization surveys. In 1976, estimated resources contained within two crudely designed open pits were 41 million tonnes with an average grade of 0.56% Cu and 0.34 g/t Au, with a cutoff grade of0.25% Cu. New resource estimates based on a major drilling program completed by American Bullion in 1994 were released as this paper goes to press. These estimates were calculated using various copper cutoff grades; at the 0.4% Cu cutoff, the ""in-situ geological reserve"" is given as 100 million tonnes grading 0.58% Cu and 0.46 g! t Au (American Bullion Minerals Ltd., 1995).The deposit consists mainly of pyrite, chalcopyrite and increasing bornite at depth, in zones of quartz-vein stockwork hosted by an elongate body of altered monzonite porphyry of latest Triassic or earliest Jurassic age. The stock intruded volcanic and sedimentary rocks of probable Stuhini Group affinity and is in faulted contact with sedimentary rocks of the Jurassic Bowser Lake Group. Gypsum stockworks are developed in the higher levels of the subvolcanic porphyry system. Late-stage quartz-carbonate veins carry small amounts of galena and sphalerite. Complex faulting within the deposit makes drill-hole correlations difficult. Alteration assemblages include an early potassic phase, almost completely destroyed by later phyllic alteration, and surrounded by a propylitic assemblage dominated by ankeritic carbonates in altered sedimentary rocks.The deposit has characteristics of bath the alkalic and calc-alkalic classes of porphyry copper deposits. The development of quartzvein stockwork suggests a calc-alkalic affinity, but the hostrocks contain little or no free quartz, molybdenum is present in trace amounts only and gold values are significant. Copper grades vary between wide extremes with unusually high grades in some sections of the deposit. The weight of evidence available in the 1970s led us to place the Red-Chris deposit firmly in the alkalic family. The quartz-sericite alteration assemblage was attributed to breakdown of potassium feldspar in a near-surface alteration environment in which seawater may have had a significant role. These interpretalions are retained here, but preliminary conclusions from the most recent work suggest that they may require some modification."

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. Introduction This paper will describe the mining plant and underground operations at Quemont. Details of geology and milling are beyond its scope. Papers on these subjects will be prepared and presented separately. A detailed account of the exploration and development, 1944 to 1947, has been given by W. L. Brown (1). Location The mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are in Rouyn township, Rouyn-Noranda county, northwestern Quebec. These concessions total about 640 acres in area. They lie within the limits of the City of Noranda, contiguous to, and directly north of, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited. A large area in the southern part of the property is covered by the north arm of Osisko lake. Production The present operating rate is about 2,100 tons per day. Three flotation concentrates are produced: copper, containing a large proportion of the gold and silver in the ore; zinc; and pyrite, which carries an appreciable additional proportion of gold. The copper and zinc concentrates are shipped to smelters as produced. The pyrite concentrate is cyanided to recover additional gold, after which it is filtered, dried, and shipped for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The principal revenue metals are copper, gold, and zinc. Silver and pyrite are important by-products.

"IntroductionThe Hat Creek coal field contains low-grade coal deposits which are the thickest in the world. The diamond drilling and geophysical surveys conducted by B.C. Hydro over the last six years have indicated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of sub-bituminous to lignitic coal. The coal field is in the Interior Plateau Dry Belt, about 240 km northeast of Vancouver, and contains two explored, nearsurface coal deposits amenable to surface mining (Fig. I). The No. I deposit contains approximately 740 million tonnes of coal at 17.71 MJ / kg, or 7,600 Btu/lb, at 34.82% ash and 24% moisture. The No. 2 deposit to the south contains appreciably more coal resources at somewhat lower grade, but it has not been explored so extensively because of its higher stripping ratio. Therefore most of the exploration activities to date have been directed toward the development of the No. I deposit. The No . I coal deposit has been selected as the source of fuel for a proposed thermal powerplant to be built about 5 km east of the deposit. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the data obtained from the diamond drilling and the geophysical logging in the No. I deposit between 1974 and 1979. An attempt is made to explain the depositional environment of the Hat Creek coal measures. Because the understanding of the depositional environment in.a particular basin is essentially an evaluation of all the geologic properties of the area, the available geological information in the No. I deposit has been compiled on the basis of consistent criteria. This includes data on the lithology of the coal measures, thickness and areal distribution of the elastic sediments, and on the changes in the megascopic stratigraphic profile based on geophysical correlation. The palynopetrographic relationship and detailed sedimentological aspects are not examined in this paper. Such studies should provide important information relating the causal vegetal and chemical responses of the coals to -environmental changes. Extensive deposition of surficial materials during de-glaciation left most of the area of the Upper Hat Creek Valley devoid of bedrock exposures. Structural and stratigraphic features are hidden beneath glacial deposits and/or post-Eocene volcanics. As a result, the geological interpretation of the Hat Creek coal basin has been based primarily on drilling and geophysical data. Because of this, any explanation of the depositional environment details is tentative until the deposits are stripped for development."

"Economics of wear in mining industry and methods by which wear cost may be reduced will be discussed.IntroductionCanada loses more than $5 billion annually due to friction and wear (Table 1). It is estimated that about $1.3 billion, or about 25% of the losses, could be saved through better application of existing technology (Table 2). It should be noted that the costs given in Table 1 and 2 refer to 1986. The losses due to friction and wear and the savings would be much higher in 1996. Tribology combines the many branches and specialties in science and technology concerned with understanding and combatting friction and wear. Specifically, tribology is concerned with the design and manufacture of sliding and rolling bearings, piston rings, gears, cutting tools and other devices in which surfaces interact, in sliding or other relative motion. Tribology is concerned with the correct use of materials for interacting solid surfaces, with the interaction of the surfaces with the lubricants, with the chemistry, physics and use of lubricants. It is concerned with the reduction of friction and wear and the avoidance of associated failures in machinery. Similar tribological components such as bearings are used in different technologies and similar tribological problems such as abrasive wear occur in different industries. Thus, tribology is in itself a generic science and technology, concerned with the generation and dissemination of knowledge on friction, wear and lubrication, and the application of the knowledge, to a wide range of industrial products and equipment, from ploughs to space equipment, from prosthesis to engines, from washing machines to railways, from computers to power stations, from paper mills to mines. "The eastern portion of the Late Precambrian geosynclinal structure known as the Labrador Trough comprises a 16,000-square-mile sulphide-bearing belt of good potential as a base metal exploration area. Hollinger and Hanna mining interests have carried on exploration in the region since 1953, with encouraging results. This program has been considerable in terms of both effort and expenditure, and has resulted in an apparently successful primary evaluation of the entire belt.Much detailed work remains to be done in the area. Exploration to date has been largely of a reconnaissance nature, employing various methods in common use in Canada today. In the course of this work, several deposits of promise, containing near-economic quantities of copper, zinc, nickel and other metals, have been located. A broad classification of these deposits is proposed.Exploration in the sulphide belt was started on the basis of partial control of the area under mineral exploration concessions. This was necessary to justify operations in an area of difficult access and high operating costs. The results of this now-terminated arrangement are regarded as being of benefit to those directly concerned as well as to the mineral industry in general."

The nature and distribution of radiation-induced defects (RIDs) in quartz from the Maw Zone, a yttrium- and rare-earth-element-enriched sandstone breccia complex exhibiting intense hydrothermal alteration, have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR spectra show that detrital quartz in sandstone, from five diamond drill holes intersecting the Maw Zone and one above the crest of the so-called Quartzite Ridge, contain only background-level RIDs, indicating that Ubearing fluids were absent in this area. However, close to the sandstone-basement unconformity, in hole WR-194 immediately west of the Quartzite Ridge, the concentration of RIDs in detrital quartz is significantly above background but at least an order of magnitude lower than those at the Key Lake and McArthur River deposits. Widespread drusy quartz at the Maw Zone, which signifies intense hydrothermal alteration, is associated with hematite-, sulfide- and carbonate-bearing mineral assemblages, which exhibit complex crosscutting relationships. EPR spectra of drusy quartz in all three types of mineral assemblages are low in RIDs as well, supporting the EPR evidence that fluids at the Maw Zone did not carry significant U. These EPR results suggest that, in spite of intense hydrothermal alteration and favorable structural geology, the Maw Zone is unlikely to host any significant U mineralization. Moreover, this study shows that the EPR technique is potentially a useful exploration tool, capable of determining whether individual alteration zones in the Athabasca Basin were associated with U-bearing fluids or not.

The wide range of operating requirements is demonstrated by comparing and contrasting the Wabamun GS of Calgary Power Ltd. and a typical modern Ontario-Hydro thermal plant. The problems of safe storage of large tonnages of coal in stockpiles are discussed, together with recommendations for stockpile management. The development of coal bunkers and their management is discussed in detail, together with future trends in the industry."

The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

"The New Brunswick gypsum and an-hydrite deposits make up part of the Windsor group in the Upper Mississippian. The present deposits were formed by surface hydration of the underlying anhydrite beds. The sub-hydrate, hydrate, and di-hydrate stages of gypsum are formed from the anhydrite by this hydration. The anhydrite was precipitated from sea water in embayments that were separated from the sea by a reef or bay-mouth bar. The anhydrite is the original form of the calcium sulphate precipitate.One gypsum deposit near Plaster Rock in northern New Brunswick was precipitated from sea water directly as gypsum, which is its present form."

Over the last few years, interest in the development and construction of large diameter, high pressure pipelines from the Mackenzie Delta in northern Canada and Alaska's North Slope has steadily increased as a result of the projected decline in recoverable natural gas from existing reserves in western Canada. The success of such enormous pipeline projects, which will require utilization of a strain-based design approach, is largely based on successful application of high strength line pipe steels, such as X80 and X100. To fully realize the economic benefits of high strength steels, welding processes and procedures must be developed to ensure that the requirements for high strength and good low temperature toughness are confidently obtainable in field girth welds used in the construction of such pipelines. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that control weld metal strength and toughness for a series of mechanized X100 girth welds produced using a range of narrow-gap gas-metal arc welding procedures. The attainment of high yield strength (> 810 MPa) is considered to be an important target to ensure overmatching strength relative to the longitudinal property distribution of X100 line pipe steel. Some factors that have been considered in this evaluation include influences of gas-metal arc welding process variants (single and multi-wire) and changes in welding procedure specifications, including joint preparation. Key components of this work relate to the reliable measurement of weld metal strength variation through-thickness and as a function of position around the circumference of a given girth weld.

Introduction During World War II years, the magnetometer was used by various field parties of the Geological Survey of Canada, specifically in the search for chromite, a strategic war mineral. Throughout the summer of 1944, Professor J. W. Ambrose used the instrument experimentally on eight separate projects (1). Since then, several members of the Survey have come to consider its use to be of valuable assistance in the season's mapping. Dr. C. H. Stockwell, in particular, regards use of the magnetometer as a necessary part of detailed geological survey work. Throughout the field season of 1949, the magnetometer was used by Dr. Stockwell?s party as an aid to mapping in detail, to the scale one thousand feet to the inch, the south-west quarter of Dasserat township, Temiskaming county, Quebec. The principal geophysical project that was undertaken was the location of the Horne Creek fault and the Diabase fault in the area approximately midway between Arntfield and Kearns, on the Quebec side of the Interprovincial border. The location of these faults on either side of this central area was known. The Horne Creek fault is a subsidiary fault to the Cadillac 'break' which extends ?westward from Val d'Or through Cadillac to beyond Larder Lake. It lies to the north of that major fault zone and has a general southwesterly trend.

This paper sketches the mining at Noranda as it would be sketched to a visiting engineer. It does not follow quite the usual form, but is presented somewhat along the lines of a conversation. TO give the mining at Noranda its proper perspective, it is necessary to sketch the whole picture and outline: 1. History 2. Metallurgical Problems 3. Exploration 4. Mining Methods 5. Mining Details 6. Filling 7. Pillar Extraction 8. Costs HISTORY Noranda is a relatively young enterprise, with much of the personal character of its founders woven into it. The name Noranda is an abbreviation of Northern Canada and the name has been a happy one for an enterprise based on northern resources, tenacity and courage. The discovery credit goes to Ed. H. Horne. This intrepid prospector returned again and again to his sulphide discoveries on the shores of Osisko lake and, in 1922, after ten years of prospecting, succeeded in interesting S. C. Thomson and H. W. Chadbourne in his discoveries. The early exploration by L. K. Fletcher, from 1922 to 1925, for Thomson and Chadbourne, indicated promising, but somewhat perplexing, ore conditions. Mr. E. Hibbert and Mr. H. L. Roscoe rook on the task of preparing the mine for production and building a smelter in 1926, and this difficult task in this isolated area made steady progress and the smelter was blown-in in December, 1927.

Because the development tunnels portal onto an area which is covered by an extensive glacier, and the mountain-side is subjected to dangerous snow slides, it was decided to construct an underground powerhouse to supply the necessary electric power and compressed air. This paper deals with the special problems inherent in the design and -construction of an underground plant. It involves the installation of diesel-electric generating equipment having an aggregate capacity of 1,050 kw.,and of air compressors with a total capacity of 2,400 cfm. Items dis-cussed include the selection of equipment to meet site conditions, the ventilation and cooling of the underground room, and the protection of personnel and equipment from explosions and fire. A short discussion on the automatic supervisory and alarm installation is also included. THE Granduc mine is located 135 miles north of Prince Rupert and 25 miles north of Stew-art. "DURING the past five years, production of asbestos fibers has increased in all countries that list asbestos as one of their mineral resources. Despite the many small mines that have been opened in Canada, United States, Mexico, South America, Italy, South Africa, Australia, Yugoslavia, and Rhodesia, the supply still does not meet the demand. It is estimated that total 1952 world production of asbestos fibers of all varieties approximated 1,600,000 tons, with Canada supplying 966,382 tons (I), or 60 per cent of all fiber mined.Asbestos fiber brokers continually are offering odd-lot samples of chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite fibers to manufacturers, •quoting fantastic prices for tonnages •varying from just a few to 50 or more in a month. In many cases, the samples are not properly graded and contain quantities of rock impurities and finely ground dust.When vendors submit samples of asbestos fibers, the manufacturer should consider• them in terms of price, quality, quantity, and as possible substitutes for fibers currently used in his products.Grading of these odd-lot fibers in most cases has been poorly done, with resultant non-uniform fiber lengths. In some instances, a number of miscellaneous lots of fibers have been .blended for sale. This blending produces a fiber that is difficult for the manufacturer to accept as a substitute for the well-standardized Canadian fibers."
