Research on gas distribution in the iron- making blast furnace has been conducted in three separate areas. Firstly, experimental work has been conducted to determine the important parameters which dictate the pressure losses in homogeneous and heterogen- eous packed beds. Secondly, a theoretical analysis of gas flow through the furnace softening-melting zone has been undertaken to determine the effect of the shape of the zone on the distribution of gas flow towards the furnace walls. Thirdly, a theoretical programme has been undertaken to develop methods for the prediction of furnace soften- ing-melting zone shape from furnace tempera- ture and gas composition measurements.

The general structural features and the principal mineral relationships of the Black Star ore body, Mount Isa, Queensland, have been described in several previously published papers. But particular reference may be made to the work of Grondijs and Schouten, whose examination of over 200 polished sections revealed some remarkable features in the process of ore deposition. The observations by the present authors are based upon the study of a smaller ·set of specimens complementary to those examined by Grondijs and Schouten and are intended to elaborate certain aspects of the mineral relationships, more particularly those affecting the ore-dressing processes.The work described applies to the primary sulphide ore only, and to the present milling practice of fine-grinding and selective flotation.GEOLOGICAL FEATURESThe Black Star is one of several economic mineral concentrations in the Mount Isa series of thinly bedded carbonaceous shales, which are considered to be of preCambrian age. The nlineralization is apparently connected with pegmatite intrustions located within some miles of the ore bodies, and has been Gontrolled in the main by major folding of the shales and by a shear system which follows approximately the strike and dip of the beds. In the Federal Republic of Germany hard coal is mined underground only. The coal mines reach down to 1 500 m deep, recently having an average depth of 900 m. The commonly used winning system is long- wall mining with face lengths up to 250 in. The gate roads, which separate the seam into single panels, have an average length of one kilometre with a cross- section up to 20 m2. These single entries are usually supported by yielding steel arches. The installation of steel arches can hardly be mechanized. The choice of heavier support, caused by increasing depth and roadway cross-section, results in high cost for labour and material in gate roads. Furthermore, the heavy steel arch is acci- dent-prone, not only during installation but also during transportation and ship- ment. Rock bolts combined with a suitable lagging offer a way of mechanizing support work in headings. The aim is to decrease cost and to increase mine safety and pro- ductivity. Over the last ten years, 50 km of gate roads have been reinforced by a combination of rock bolts and weld mesh. Nevertheless, there are still differing opinions on the feasibility of rock bolting in gate roads. In Germany a long tradition and experience with steel arch support exists, whereas the function of an anchorage is a closed book to miners, preventing this new technique from spreading more quickly. Advantages and shortcomings of both steel arch support and rock bolting are compared. The experience with rock bolting up to now is reported. Possible improve- monts arm discussed.

Soil gases were collected on activated charcoal, analyzed by computerized mass spectrometry and treated with multivariate statistical pattern recognition to determine the diagnostic geochemical signature associated with the Okuaizu Geothermal Field in Japan. From this a geothermal model was developed and compare to 175 "unknown" samples in a 250 m spaced grid over 30 1Qn2 mapping the areas with a matching geochemical character. Faults and fractures were generally located by the presence of high molecular weight components. Following the initial survey, the faults in two specific areas were precisely located by a second survey with samples at 10-30m spacing. Where earlier geochemical surveys had placed anomalies 1-2 Km northeast of the geothermal center, the fingerprint survey accurately mapped the system and detected several faulted zones. It was not misled by hot springs located away from the geothermal System.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide'fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route. The A.A.E.C. is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site,

The development of the SECV brown coal open cut at Loy Yang will require depressurisation of aquifers both within and below the coal seam sequence in order to maintain open cut stability. Prediction of future open cut dewatering requirements at Loy Yang Open Cut and evaluation of the regional consequences of dewatering has required development of a detailed hydrogeological model of the Loy Yang area. The complex stratigraphy of the coal seam and aquifer/aquitard sequences at Loy Yang have been analysed and integrated with the hydrogeological concepts developed from regional groundwater studies to formulate a realistic hydrogeological model as a basis for finite-element flow modelling.

The ore deposits of the Oobar mining field are confined to sediments of the Early Devonian Cobar Supergroup. The mineralisation is discordant to bedding and parallel to cleavage. The structural association is variable with the deposits near the eastern margin of the Cobar Basin formed in zones of deformation and faulting. The Elura deposit located further to the west is in less deformed sediments within the core of a small anticline. There are wide variations in ore type fran lad sulphide chalcopyrite - pyrrhotite - pyrite to high sulphide sphalerite - galena - pyrrhotite - pyrite assemblages. The deposits ccnmonly contain an inner zone of quartz - sulphide - chlorite veining grading outwards into a chlorite halo containing quartz - carbonate veining. The Elura deposit differs in having an inner massive sulphide zone surrounded by a zone of big-Fe carbonate formation. The mineralisation probably formed during regional metamorphism and deformation in the Early Carboniferous. A possible genetic model involves the injection of metal bearing hydrothermal fluids formed in the upper mantle or lower crust up basement structures into the overlying Cobar Supergroup sediments. An alternate model proposes the leaching of metals from the sediments by brines formed during metamorphism and subsequent emplacement in favourable structural zones.

Following the accident in the Peterson section of Mufulira mine in September, 1970, a method had to be found of extracting up to 300 000 tonnes of ore per month from this area without inducing caving. Sandfill mining methods were chosen, necessitating a plant capable of producing both cemented and uncemented fill on a large scale. The paper covers the design and construction of this sandplant which is thought to be unique for its size, as it incorporates three 3 000 tonne capacity settled storage silos, a 500 tonne capacity cement silo, mixing tanks and a control room situated underground. The plant is designed to handle an aver- age of 440 tonnes per hour with a maximum of 660 tonnes per hour for limited periods, delivering either uncemented fill or cemented fill in proportions varying from 1:6 to 1:30. The instrumentation and equipment necessary to give one man operation of the plant is described and the fill mining methods now in use at Mufulira are briefly outlined.

A statistically-designed experimental program has been used to study compositional and processing variables which influence the development of strength and reducibility of iron ore pellets. The effects of chemical composition and processing variables were investigated by indurating laboratory-made green pellets, of known composition, under approximately isothermal conditions in a pot- grate simulator. Some findings from a six- variable study are summarized in the form of contour diagrams and emphasize the importance of interactions between the variables. Production of strong, highly reducible pellets is possible over a considerable range of combinations of temperature and firing time. Abrasion index (AI) and cold compression strength (CCS) improve as both these variables increase, but reducibility (R) declines, so a compromise is required. When the lime level is too low to form enough slag for bonding, the AI and CCS may be inadequate. Larger additions of lime tend to improve AI and CCS, with only slight effects on R. The Kelian Gold mine project won two excellence awards from the Victorian Division of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. It was a challenging project, fast tracked in a remote and inhospitable tropical environment. The creation of a profitable and efficient mine was a significant engineering and project management achievement. The difficulties encountered and the way they were managed provide valuable lessons. These include the importance of sufficiently detailed engineering in all aspects of the job to enable the best estimates possible to be prepared during feasibility studies, the need to prepare the project scope and execution plan with disciplined and rigorous attention to detail by a highly experienced team and the value of identifying, assessing and mitigating risk and uncertainty during execution. The practical benefits of applying these lessons were demonstrated in the successful management of technical uncertainty on the recent diversion of the Kelian River to allow the expansion of the Kelian mine.

On-line radioisotope gauges determine information on the characteristics of ore to enable improved control of processing operations. In the metalliferous mineral industry, in-stream analysis systems based on radioisotope X-ray techniques determine concentrations of valuable minerals at various stages of the concentration process. In the coal industry, on-line gauges determine ash and moisture contents, and the specific energy of coal.In-stream analysis systems developed in Australia are installed in about 30 mineral concentrators. Their use has led to the increased recovery of valuable minerals, and the time taken to recover the cost of installation is usually several months. The savings to Australia resulting from use of these analysis systems is estimated to be more than $A 15 million per year.Australian experience in the training of mineral industry personnel shows that the most effective approach is to combine courses on nuclear techniques and control of processing operations. This is the basis of Australia's contribution to the minerals sub-project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Industrial Project.

Pongkor Gold Mines is one of seven units of production owned by PT Aneka Tambang (State owned mining company). The mine is located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia. It is in the Bogor District and approximately 110 kilometres to the south of capital Jakarta. It is located in very steep hilly terrain intersected by many river valleys and the mine site is approximately 500 metres above mean sea level (see Figures 1 and 2 - Mine location map and picture)

The Amanda Bel Goldfield (new name) is an area of approximately 1000 sq. km centred 65km WSW of Ingham and 150km due east of Kidston (Camel Creek homestead to Ryeburn homestead area). Gold mineralisation has been located in tightly folded sediments of the Silurian Greenvale Formation as well as in the Early Devonian Kangaroo Hills Formation and the Early Carboniferous Clarke River Formation. The area is traversed by a major NW-SE structural corridor, with many of the numerous basaltic, andesitic and rhyolitic dykes of the region sharing a similar trend. So far fourteen gold-bearing zones have been located, all of which are new discoveries delineated by bulk cyanide leach sampling and subsequent geological reconnaissance. The region has undergone three periods of deformation with gold mineralisation introduced syn-D1, post D1 - pre D , syn-D and post-D2/D , thereby revealing an involved metall~genic history. Mineralisation types include Sb, Sb-Au, Sb-Au-As, Sb-Au-As (-Pb-Zn) and Au-As. Minor occurrences of W, Pb-Zn-Ag and Pb-Zn-Ag-As-Sn are also present as are alluvial (deep lead) tin Drosoects.

The Honeymoon nickel sulphide deposits are located 45 km south of Wiluna in the 2.7 Ga old Agnew-Wiluna greenstone belt in the NE of the Yilgarn Craton (Figure 1). Both disseminated and massive nickel sulphide deposits are present within the deformed and metamorphosed Honeymoon Well ultramafic complex and are hosted by distinctly different komatiitic lithologies (Gole et al, 1996). The deposit styles and host rock lithologies reflect formation in markedly different volcanic settings. Metasomatism has affected parts of the ultramafic complex, including sections of the sulphide deposits, and has had a marked impact on mineralogy and bulk sulphide compositions. The present indicated resource is 158 Mt at 0.71 per cent Ni in four deposits (0.4 per cent Ni cut-off, resources above 300 m depth, December 1995). This includes a massive sulphide resource of 2.5 Mt at 3.36 per cent Ni.

The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionised the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic energy product an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional ferrite magnets. This has allowed the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits operating energy free and surpassing the strength and effectiveness of electromagnets. New applications and design concepts focusing on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology also led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications which were not previously considered are now being applied to primary mineral upgrading and recycling and secondary recovery.

The concept of hydro power in deep mines is based on the exploitation of the hydrostatic head that can be gained as refrigerated cooling water descends in shaft pipe columns from the surface, to provide hydraulic power for machines at the working face. This paper describes the work done on two important aspects of the controlled distribu-tion of the high pressure water within a mine, namely the control of pressure under normal operating conditions, and the control of flow in an emergency situation following a pipe breakage. Suitable methods of control have been determined using theoretical techniques to model the steady and unsteady flow behaviour of the water in the pipeline, and taking into consideration the environmental constraints on the types of control devices that can be used. The preferred approach is one in which the high pressure water itself is used as the control medium. The control valves themselves can be fairly conventional in design, but in the case of pipe break protection it is shown that a less conventional approach based on the use of a hydraulic fuse gives improved control performance.

Five Hypotheses are given for factors influencing long-run metals price forecasts. 1 . Geologists succeed when given the money. 2. Better understanding of a metals market depresses its price. 3 . Statistical techniques get forecasts wrong. 4. Long-run metals prices are related to crustal abundance. 5 . Economic cycles affect metals prices more than is realised. These are then framed within the transition between eras as influenced by apparent long waves in economic activity. Innovation surges during the transition between eras. The transition to the 5th Wave since the Indus- trial Revolution 200 years ago is now underway. Finally, price projec- tions are given both for the 5th Wave and 200 years from now on the assumption that a similar monetary measure to today will be then extant.

Historically, most of the gold produced from Kalgoorlie has been derived from the gold and gold telluride Golden Mile lode systems dominantly hosted within the Golden Mile Doler-ite and to a lesser extent, Paringa Basalt. In more recent times the gold-quartz stockwork ore bodies within Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite at Mt Charlotte have become increasingly imp-ortant.Extensive low grade gold mineralisation has now been defined to the north and east of Kalgoorlie within rock units of the Golden Mile sequence not generally considered to be highly prospective.Two main types of mineralisation have been defined. The first comprises variably mineralised and altered quartz-albite porphyr-ies emplaced within talc-carbonated Hannans Lake Serpentinite (Mystery deposit). There is intense fuchsitic, pyritic and carbonate alter-ation of the serpentinite adjacent to the porphyry bodies. Gold mineralisation is assoc-iated with fine-grained disseminations and veinlets of pyrite and narrow quartz and quartz-tourmaline veining within the porphyry and adjacent fuchsite-carbonate rock.
