Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum trees was widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. Charcoal made from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed by optical mineralogy and SEM and found to contain unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOx) crystals in plant cells. Partial and full reduction tests of a high-P Brockman ore were conducted at several temperatures with coke and coke doped with CaOx and CaCO3. It was observed that CaOx promoted reduction and generated comparatively more metallic iron in reduced samples. Furthermore, CaOx encouraged phosphorous partition into slag phases than into the metallic iron, suggesting CaOx can a potential alternative fluxing material to calcium carbonate for treating high-P iron ores in ironmaking processes.

BolidenÆs Aitik mine, located 100 km north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is one of EuropeÆs largest copper mines. This operation produces 18 Mt of ore per year and 99 per cent of this tonnage needs to be deposited as tailings. The tailings pond currently covers 1140 ha but at closure it will hold around 760 Mt of tailings and occupy an area of 1400 ha. The tailings contain less than one per cent sulfur and only 0.03 per cent copper. The carbonate content is as low as 0.25 per cent but silicates, with substantial accumulated buffering and metal adsorption capacity, are abundant. A programme of comprehensive material characterisation and investigations has been undertaken in order to design a decommissioning strategy that meets the regulatory requirements and secures long-term physical and chemical stability of the deposited tailings. The main concern has been the potential generation of acid rock drainage (ARD). Standard tests using acid base accounting (ABA) and humidity cell tests during 15 weeks were not conclusive regarding the ARD generation potential. The accuracy of the results was considered to be unsatisfactory, therefore the humidity cell tests were gradually extended in time. In total, almost four years of humidity cell tests were conducted on various sets of samples which were selected in order to cover the variation in sulfide content existing on site and in various points of the milling process. The laboratory results were subject to detailed geochemical evaluation in order to fully understand the interaction between acid-producing reactions, driven by weathering of sulfides, and acid-consuming reactions by dissolution of carbonates and alumino-silicates. The laboratory tests were followed by both pilot tests and field measurements in order to estimate the scale dependency between the laboratory and the field results. It was found that sulfide weathering rates in the field were considerably lower than those measured in the laboratory. However, it could not be verified that the tailings top layer would maintain a neutral pH in the long term even under field conditions. Thus, a reviewed tailings management plan, including de-pyritisation of the tailings during the last years of operation, is considered.

Alkali emissions are one of the environmental challenges facing alumina refineries. Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) is undertaking a number of initiatives to continuously improve its environmental performance. One of these is a program aimed at the reduction of alkali emissions. Alkali emissions originate from a number of sources (eg elevated open tanks), and its level depends on a number of process parameters/ mechanisms (ie splash filling, thermal currents in tanks, streams discharged from a pipe, tank temperatures, atomisation) and climatic conditions (eg wind speed and direction, rain, etc). Under normal operating conditions, there is a continuous low level of alkali emissions from the plant. Certain vessels within the plant have been identified as major contributors to this level of emission, while certain activities within the plant contribute to a temporary elevation (æspikeÆ) of alkali emissions. QAL developed a method using phenolphthalein-treated pads to measure emissions within and outside QAL boundaries. These provide no information about mass emission rates but are important for detecting if alkali material is present. Since mass emission rates are important for determining if improvements in emissions are made, QAL identified the need to design an improved sampling method. Following the development and implementation of a sampling and analysis method to monitor alkali emission concentrations, QAL is conducting a number of feasibility studies evaluating a range of alkali emission reduction options. The alkali measurement method will be used to track and demonstrate progress in this environmental initiative. This paper will discuss the measurement method and emission reduction options being evaluated.

"Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

The Rio Tinto Iron Ore group currently estimates grade attributes for mineral resources using ordinary kriging (OK). OK produces a smoothed globally unbiased estimate, but does not capture local variability, which can have significant impact on mine planning and scheduling. The dimensions and the multivariate nature of iron ore deposits make point simulations of whole deposits impractical. With a direct block simulation method the size and speed limitations of point simulations can potentially be overcome, resulting in a viable method for capturing local variability and for providing risk measures into the mine plan and schedules. Some iron ore deposits are highly folded (post mineralisation) and require preprocessing using an unfolding algorithm to properly define the continuity parameters and directions of anisotropy before simulation can proceed. Block co-simulation proceeds in unfolded space and since mine planning require a block-model with regular block-sizes; a regular block-model is unfolded first. This paper discusses a block co-simulation approach that can be used to simulate the irregular blocks resulting from the unfolding process. A section of an iron ore deposit is used for testing the block co-simulation algorithm and the simulation results are compared against the Isatis direct block simulation method. Available blasthole data is also used to validate the behaviour of the block co-simulation algorithm.

Cliffs Natural Resources Pty Ltd - Asia Pacific Iron Ore's (formerly Portman Iron Ore Limited) K deposit (Dowd's Hill), at its Koolyanobbing operation in Western Australia, hosts enriched magnetite mineralisation below the presently mined haematite-goethite ore zone. Two distinct northwest-southeast elongated, highly magnetic anomalous bodies that dip to the north-east appear to be sourced by this deeper mineralisation. Magnetic modelling indicates significant remanent magnetisation with Qratios around 1.5, directed shallow down. The north-west anomaly is overlain by a ridge of uneconomic banded iron formation (BIF) and the present waste dump, whereas the south-east body was partly exposed during ongoing mining of overlying haematite-goethite ore. Sections of the magnetite mineralisation in this south-east anomaly were intersected previously by diamond drill holes. Review of the historic cores identified potential magnetite enrichment, with grades and mineralogy that might be amenable to beneficiation. A first-phase reverse circulation drilling program was designed to further delineate the trend and extent of the two anomalies. The following magnetite mineralisation assemblages are recognised from cores, reverse circulation (RC) drill cuttings and pit mapping of the south-east magnetic body: higher-grade magnetite-haematite ¦ goethite and magnetite ¦ pyrite and lower-grade, recrystallised magnetite-quartz (BIF), magnetite-carbonate, magnetite-talc and minor magnetite-bearing mafic schist. Disseminated specularite is locally present in theassemblages. Talc-schist and massive pyrite occur along the footwall contact. Magnetic susceptibility measured from drill chips within the magnetite-enriched zones reveals an apparent susceptibility values range of 0.2 to 1.3 SI. Preliminary results from Satmagan and Davis tube recovery analysis shows that the magnetite content in these mineralised zones correlate well with existing geophysical data and magnetic susceptibility measurements.

In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

A common practice in the mining industry is to decompose the planning process into different tasks, so the overall process and specific schedules can be constructed easily. Nevertheless, currently there are some adverse effects, such as not capturing the real value of a project by not taking into account the construction of several underground drifts and general infrastructure. Then the common practice is to compute mining sequence and cut-off grade profiles over the life of the mine without constitutively integrating the development schedule as a means to measure the constructability of a given mine design and sequence. Thus, the investigation summarised in this paper shows a novel, integrative way of treating an underground mine sequence and production schedule while considering drift development scheduling. Moreover, it is thought that, because of this original model, the whole underground production scheduling exercise must concentrate on combining the development and the production scheduling to compute a robust and a feasible production schedule.In order to quantify the effect of the conventional way of viewing the planning, the concept of the building information model (BIM) needs to be used, which was postulated by Charles Eastman and has been used extensively since the late 1970s. BIM takes other aspects of a project into account, considering at the same time the spatial relationships, quantities and properties of building components, but especially some kind of model visualisation, which is the advantage to be incorporated. This paper presents the basis for an optimisation model that allows for defining the sequence of the mining development so that the production plan can be achieved. For this, the model considers the space dimensions, time, pattern or strategy, cost or benefit, precedence and resources available. Tests were performed considering a block caving and sublevel open stoping method. Finally these tests showed the main conclusion, that production sequence changes when the building capacity is considered.

The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

This paper provides a brief fundamental insight regarding the fabric media concept for liquor filtration. The subject matter will be of interest to metallurgists and engineers with professional responsibility for world class design of solid liquid separation processes and efficient lowest cost operation of existing mineral process plant. Avocet Mining commissioned the worldÆs first mineral liquor clarification process incorporating a fabric media liquor filter at their Lanut gold mine in Sulawesi, in 2004 with design consulting provided by the Australian company SLS Technology Pty Ltd. Development of the technology continues with applied research focused on selecting textile parameters to apply filtration to a wider range of particle and contaminant types, higher solids concentrations, and different process liquors. Liquor filtration with the Fabric Media technology offers an array of attractive benefits. For Avocet Mining, filtration of pregnant liquor directly from the heap leach pad has enabled removal of the sediment pond and sand filters from the traditional process flow sheet, thus providing significant cost and installation time savings. Avocet Mining has recently expressed confidence in the technology indicating selection preference of the technology for the expansion at Lanut and for a new project. The application design window for the Fabric Media concept is extremely flexible with the technology now successfully applied to many different liquor chemistries and application objectives around the world. Potential cost savings for solid liquid separation process plant, such as counter current decantation circuits, clarifier vessels and thickener tanks can be calculated from laboratory measurements or pilot plant demonstrations.

ABSTRACTFor the binary system copper-lead two relationsEquation 1andEquation 2have been derived for the activities of copper and lead at compositions and absolute temperatures within the liquid region of the phase diagram.These relations give, with greater accuracy than is given by previously published relations, the activity-composition temperature variations for all regions of the phase diagram of interest to metallurgists.These relations are essentially simple forms of the Margules equations but with linear temperature dependence applied to their coefficients. This has been done in such a manner that a phase diagram obtained from these relations agrees well with the data available for this system. The methods of obtaining the relations and constructing a phase diagram from them are both given in detail. The enthalpies and entropies of mixing are compared with those derived by other methods.

"In the civil tunnelling field, the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has now overtaken the use of conventional excavation methods (drill and blast / roadheader). This is due to a number of reasons, including the increasing availability and reliability of TBMs, the ability to deal with a wider range of face conditions, and the reduced excavation cost that TBMs can bring.Mining companies have spearheaded the advances in shaft boring by mechanised means, both in blind and raise boring. However, mining companies have been slower to adopt mechanised tunnelling.When contrasted with a conventional mining contract, there are good reasons why TBMs in mining applications are relatively rare. A conventional decline contract may have very little geotechnical information. The decline alignment can be subject to change as the tunnelling progresses. The infrastructure requirements are less for a conventional decline, and the sunk cost prior to excavation commencing is lower. Contract documents can be very simple.The history of TBM use in mining is reviewed and lessons are described. From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.We believe that despite the additional requirements for TBM declines, the cost and time advantage to mining companies is very attractive. The challenge is to recognise and to meet the requirements for success in a TBM drive to achieve the advantages of: faster advance rates reduced rock damage/overbreak reduced support requirements uniform muck characteristics greater personnel safety.From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.CITATION:Asche, H R and Mather, D, 2014. This paper describes a collaborative project undertaken by Newcrest Mining Limited (Newcrest) and pitt&sherry to identify, develop and then implement global best practices to manage the exposure to inrush (dry and mud) hazards in underground mining operations. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify past experience globally and the current state of knowledge and practice in managing inrush hazard. A key requirement of the literature review was the development of a list of guiding questions which would form a framework for approaching operators to discuss the topic, capture recent learnings and understand current operating practices to allow the development of a best practice solution. An initial cohort of 14 mines across four continents chose to contribute and detailed interviews were carried out by the project team. The outcome from the literature review, interviews with participating mines and various internal discussions was a comprehensive summary document detailing Basic versus Best Practice management of the inrush hazard. This document is being used as a gap analysis tool by Newcrest to assess and guide the management of inrush hazard at their existing and future operations. The summary document has also been provided to the participating mines for their consideration. The project is iterative and will continue to evolve as new experiences, knowledge and practices come to light.

In this paper we describe the leaching characteristics of pure gold in thiosulfate solutions that contain a known chelator; meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). The interfacial and chemical characterisation of the system was accomplished using both electrochemical methods and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis after pure gold samples were exposed to solutions composed of 65 mM Na2S2O3, 1 mM NaOH and a range of DMSA concentrations. In the absence of DMSA, cyclic voltammetry revealed the onset of thiosulfate mediated gold dissolution, the degree of which was reduced at more positive potentials due to the formation of oxidised thiosulfate products on the gold surface. The addition of small amounts of DMSA (<10 ¦M) to the electrolyte resulted in minor changes to the voltammograms indicating a subtle interaction of the additive with the gold surface that may improve leaching. However, at higher concentrations of DMSA (up to 100 ¦M), electrochemical evidence suggests the formation of new oxidation products in solution as well as the formation of more compact monolayers of DMSA on the surface, which contribute to partial repassivation of the surface. The influence of DMSA on thiosulfate leaching of pure gold electrodes at the open circuit potential for a period of 90 minutes was tested and the corresponding gold leaching performance evaluated with ICP-MS analysis. Our data shows that small amounts of DMSA (1 ¦M) doubled the amount of total gold in solution when compared to the same study in the absence of the additive. However, higher concentrations (5 ¦M DMSA) reduced the overall amount of dissolved gold. These results may point to a mechanism where small amounts of DMSA improve leaching by adsorbing onto the surface in a highly defective monolayer that partially blocks or disrupts the formation of passivation products caused by thiosulfate oxidation, but excess DMSA can limit the leaching process itself by forming too coherent a monolayer on the gold surface.CITATION:Uceda, M, Choi, Y, Shepherd, J L and Guerra, E, 2013. Ventilation on demand (VOD) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce operating costs for ventilation fans, by reducing fan output to meet demand. The most effective method for reducing operating costs is to use variable speed drives to adjust the speed of ventilation fans as required – this achieves significantly larger power savings that damper or vane control alone.However, this mode of control will significantly increase the number of speed cycles the ventilation fans will experience. Fabricated impellers have a limited number of start stop cycles based on the materials and method of construction, and the operating stresses due to centrifugal forces. This means that fans experiencing constant or regular speed changes will experience a reduced fatiguelife compared with fans that are run at constant speed.The fatigue life of fans operated under various speeds using VOD is difficult to predict, as it is dependent on the magnitude of speed changes, and the frequency, which will be varied to meet demand. It is important to be able to estimate remaining fatigue life to assist in maintenance planning and avoid unplanned maintenance activities.This paper will review extensive VOD data on fan operating conditions from two primary mine ventilation fans. This paper will demonstrate how this data can be used to calculate accumulated fatigue and predict the remaining fatigue life, and how this compares with fixed speed or non-VOD controlled fans.The increased maintenance costs for the impellers will also be estimated, and compared to the operating cost savings using VOD, to determine if the savings outweigh the additional maintenance costs.

A vast majority of the operating longwall sections use shield-type face supports to provide ground control in the United States. As a co-operative research program between the University of Alabama (UA) and Jim Walter Resources, Inc.(JWR), a joint research program is underway to study interaction of shields with surrounding rock masses. A series of analyses on the response of shields are performed using monitored data at a longwall face in a deep coal mine. In this paper, various effects of parameters, such as leg pressure, setting load, developing load, maximum loading rate, pressure in capsule, and convergence between canopy and base, are discussed and recommended as stability indices. A microcomputer program is being developed for instantaneous interpretation of the shield monitored data, and for giving warnings of potential problems. The preliminary results define the effects of the setting load, developing load, and rate of developing load or leg closure rate. The objective of the study is to understand the shield characteristics and their interaction with surrounding strata in real time, then develop a reliable program for maintaining longwall stability.

Pyrite depression with prolonged pre-conditioning treatment in high salinity water has attracted much of researchers’ interest in recent years considering the increased utilisation of multiple stage flotation, closed water circuits, clay minerals, and sea water in flotation plants. In this study, the role of calcium (Ca)/magnesium (Mg) precipitates in stabilising the dissociative ferric hydroxy-xanthate (FHX), and its effect on modifying the balance of hydrophobic/hydrophilic species on the pyrite surface were primarily investigated. The total amount of extractable Fe-bearing species on pyrite concentrates and tailings after floatability test was quantitively determined using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction tests combined with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A more evident accumulation of extracted-Fe in pyrite concentrates rather than it in pyrite tailings was observed at both pH 9 and 10.5 when pyrite was pre-conditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions for 360 min. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed the main xanthate derivatives changed from di-xanthogen (1155 cm-1 ) to FHX (1167 cm-1 ) on the oxidised pyrite samples that were preconditioned in Ca/Mg-bearing solutions. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) suggested the preferential accumulation of FHX upon secondary Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates as reflected by the higher Fe/S ratio together with the decrease of O element herein after xanthate conditioning. Although the hydrophilic secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals on the pyrite surface generally deteriorate pyrite’s floatability, the upper section of these secondary hydrophilic aggregates is partially covered by FHX alongside with further multilayer-adsorbed di-xanthogen. The precipitated Ca/Mg-bearing precipitates promotes the immobilisation of dissociated FHX derived from the reaction among iron oxyhydroxides and xanthate anions upon the localised secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals via acid–base complexation. Therefore, this phenomenon alleviates the hydrophilic modification of secondary Ca/Mg/Fe-bearing minerals to pyrite considering the immobilised FHX upon localised precipitates shows a slight hydrophobicity, and meanwhile, the upper FHX benefits the multilayer adsorption of di-xanthogen via the interaction among their inner hydrophobic alkyl chains.

The role of a project metallurgist is diverse and covers input into the resource definition, mining studies, metallurgical test program development, process engineering and plant design, cost estimate preparation and financial analysis aspects of project feasibility studies. Mining project schedule and cost overruns can often be attributed to cutting short metallurgical test work, engineering and cost estimating leading up to commitment to development. In a significant number of cases this may result from the lack of understanding and commitment by the project proponent to the requisite metallurgical and processing studies required during the various pre-commitment stages of a mining project. Metallurgical test work, process development, engineering and cost estimating requirements for each stage of pre-commitment development are described together with a summary of the ongoing role of the project metallurgist during detailed engineering and commissioning of a process plant.
