The extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: i. The reaction C + FeO Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling Of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautiol and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to Al2O3, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. z. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. Indirect Methods Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed the readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached is not well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the con- than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equiliblium relations may be used mole readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory mean, of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly, For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4.6 illustrates that even iia a single plant wide variations exist under llormal conditions of operation. A practical analytical method is developed in this paper which provides the practicing reservoir engineer with a handy method for analyzing oilfield interference problems. The procedure employed entails the principle of superposition of individual eflects. A set of charts has been developed and can be used to evaluate the individual effects. The charts represent non-steady state pressure distribution in an extensive aquifer due to a constant rate of production from an oilfield which can be approximated by circular geometry; they are constructed from solutions to the diffusivity equation considering a circular sink as distinguished from a point sink. The solutions are obtained partially from mathenlatical considerations and partially from analog and digital computations. By virtue of the method of images, the charts can be used also to treat the case of production near a fault. In addition, provisions are made for treating oil fields, which are produced by partial water-drive. Treating an actual field case is deferred to a subyequent writing; however, illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the method of application. The pressure distribution in linear and limited radial aquifers is currently under study. INTRODUCTION With the increasing difficulty of discovering new oil reserves, attention is necessarily focused on the efficient development and production of existing reservoirs. Efficient production depends on the availability of reliable means for predicting the pressure-production behavior of oil fields. The prediction is usually performed by analytical methods or computers. Analytical methods are often limited to systems which can be approximated by simple geometry. However, analytical methods have the distinct advantage of being readily performed without special equipment. Analog and digital computers lend themselves to a variety of problems, but are not always locally available and consequently their use is limited. One particular situation in which analytical techniques are needed involves studies of multiple, water-drive oil fields sharing a common aquifer. Such oil fields are in hydrodynamic communication. Therefore, production from any of the oil fields is accompanied by a pressure decline which is transmitted through the aquifer to the other oil fields and manifested as pressure interference. The rate of propagation of the pressure decline is such that the pressure may be significantly reduced many miles away from a producing pool. An example of pressure interference is found in the Woodbine formation in East Texas. There. a dozen or more pools, including several of major size, draw on the Woodbine formation for water drive. The pressure in the water-bearing portion of the formation has been significantly reduced over an area of several thousand square miles. This reduction of pressure has been such that when the Hawkins pool was discovered in 1940, the pressure in it had already been reduced 280 psi below the initial value in the aquifer. This resulted from prior production from other Woodbine sand pools, including, in particular, the East Texas field some 20 miles to the east of Hawkins.' Single crystal, bicrystal, and polycrystal tensile tests of aluminum at 4.2°K, 77°K, and 300°K have been used to examine the role of grain boundaries in the deformation process. Results indicate that a grain boundary may affect the extent and slope of easy glide. The stage II hardening rate, on the other hand, is independent of the presence or absence of grain boundaries. This conclusion allows the size of the region of multiple slip caused by an incompatible grain boundary to be determined. For the size of bicyystal sample used in this study, multiple slip occurs in about half of the cross section. PREVIOUS studies of the stress-strain characteristics of bicrystals of face-centered-cubic metals have been limited to aluminuml-5 at room temperature. Recent results, however, indicate that the stress-strain curves of single crystals of such metals may be separated into at least three stages6 in which different deformation processes are occurring7 provided testing is done at sufficiently low temperatures.' Since for aluminum a well-defined stage II develops only below room temperature, previous studies have not been able to relate effects of grain boundaries to all of the three stages of deformation. It is therefore to be expected that low-temperature deformation of aluminum single crystals and bicrystals should clarify the effects of grain boundaries on the different processes of deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals and bicrystals were grown from the melt by the standard techniqueg with aluminum reported by Alcoa to be 99.993 pct pure. Ridges in the boat were used to guide the grain boundary during growth, assuring that the boundary would bisect the sample.10 The rate of furnace motion during growth was 1.0 cm per hr. During growth zone purification resulted, as evidenced by the ability of the first material to freeze to recrystallize at room temperature following severe deformation. Samples were approximately 4.4 X 6.6 mm in cross section and 103.5 mm in length between grips. Samples were annealed at 635" i 5°C for 40 hr and furnace cooled over a 7-hr period. They were then electropolished in a solution of 5 parts methanol to 1 part perchloric acid at a current density of 15 amp per sq dm for about 30 min at temperatures below 0°C. Tensile testing was performed at 295" (room temperature), 77" (sample in liquid nitrogen), and 4.2"K (sample in liquid helium) on the hard-type machine indicated schematically in Fig. 1. The machine con- sists basically of a tube surrounding a rod; one end of the sample is attached to each member, and the rod is pulled up the tube to extend the sample. The rod is rigidly mounted and is moved vertically by a system described by asinski." The pulling force is measured continuously by an electrical strain gage load cell, and the relative displacement of the tube and rod is also recorded continuously by a soft cantilever beam with electrical strain gages. Maximum stress and strain sensitivities were ±2g per sq mm and * 3-10-5. In all tests the strain rate was approximately 5.10-5 per sec. The thin wires in the tensile apparatus introduce softness, which may be corrected for, however, by measuring load vs displacement with the sample replaced by an elastic member. For loads greater than 15 kg the spring constant is 1.875.106 g per cm. The flexible wires also served to reduce substantially the large shearing forces which may arise in the case of grips having horizontal rigidity.'' As in any gripping system, however, bending moments will arise in the course of deformation by single slip. Engineering stress, s = (load)/(original cross-sectional area), and strain, E = (increase in length)/ (original length), are used for stress-strain curves unless otherwise indicated. Tables list resolved shear stress, T=mo and shear strain ? = dm, where m is the usual Schmid resolved shear stress factor for the primary slip system at the start of deformation. The first group of samples to be described forms an isoaxial set, all of the crystals making up the single crystals or bicrystals having the same tensile axis, the orientation of which is indicated by the cross in Fig. 2. For this orientation the primary slip plane and slip direction make angles of 45 deg with the tensile axis and the Schmid factor m has its maximum possible value of 0.5. Rotations about the tensile axis are indexed by means of an angle 0 between the small-area surface of the samples and the projection of the primary slip direction onto the cross section, as defined in Fig. 3. In single crystals, values of 0 were 0 and 90 deg, while in bicrystals 0 values were (0 deg, 180 deg), (90 deg, 270 deg), and (0 deg, 90 deg) as indicated in Fig. 4.

The influence of the hydroxyl factor is more damaging to formations penetrated and causes greater consumption of drilling mud additives than previously realized. This hydroxyl effect on clays is essentially independent of the cations present in the drilling fluid and thus differs from the base exchange reactions that have preoccupied mud chemistry with sodium and calcium bentonite concepts for nearly two decades. The new organic polyelectrolyte-con-ditioned muds haw made it possible to use materials other than sodium hydroxide to maintain the alkalinity of such muds. The properties of silicates, as indicated by their dissociation characteristics and buffering action, are such that they can control he pH and alkalinity of drilling muds at the desired level and, at the same time, minimize undesirable hydroxyl effects associated with sodium hydroxide. This use of silicate compounds is different and distinct from prior applications of silicates as deflocculants or shale preservers. Laboratory and field data presented in this report show that silicate compositions can be utilized to adjust the alkalinity of drilling muds and, at the same time, minimize hydmxyl-promoted clay cleavage. INTRODUCTION Studies for improving the efficiency of rotary drilling techniques must consider the chemistry of drilling fluids and of the formations being penetrated. The chemical aspects of drilling must be studied in conjunction with and in relation to the mechanical factors if, for example, penetration rates are to be optimized. Drilling fluid technology has been largely influenced by chemical reactions of the montmorillonite (bentonite) clay minerals. Most of the literature of mud chemistry concerns the properties of bentonite. Clays of the kaolin or illite type, which are nonswelling, are not generally regarded as sources of drilling mud problems. If these nonswelling shale clays are considered, they are commonly regarded as inert solids. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the relation of surface and colloid chemistry to massive shale bodies has received only scant attention from drilling technologists. Clay studies reported in the drilling mud literature have dealt, for the most part, with the properties of clays in a finely divided state, and often in very dilute suspensions. Yet frequently during drilling, shale problems not related to the rheology of clay suspensions develop in massive non-bentonitic shale sections of zero or near zero permeability. This paper is concerned with surface chemical reactions that can influence the behavior of these non-bentonite clay masses in such a manner as to adversely affect drilling operations. Browning and Perricone1,2 have pointed out that some of the most troublesome shales to drill, such as the Atoka, contain no montmorillonites. They also pointed out that mud problems can frequently be mitigated by reduction of clay cleavage achieved by using drilling fluids with a minimum of available hydroxyl ions. If pronounced clay cleavage occurs during drilling, the borehole may soften, increasing the possibility of sloughing. In addition, the resulting increased incorporation of high-surface-area clay solids into the mud system can reduce penetration rates and necessitate greater chemical treatment. This increase of shale, of colloidal or near-colloidal dimensions, into the drilling mud is due to clay aggregate cleavage and not to base exchange or swelling reactions, such as occur with bentonites. Searle and Grimshaw3 point out the difference between cleavage or slaking reactions of nonswelling clays (such as illite and kaolinite) and the swelling of bentonite. They further state that the speed of slaking is increased in alkaline water. Eitel1 cites Salmang and Becker, who recognized that clay surface reactions impart plasticity and workability to clay masses. Their results clearly show that all liquids which contain hydroxyl groups in their molecules favor the workability of clays. The ancient technique of aging clays in the moist condition to increase their "workability" is evidence that these clay cleavage phenomena are of considerable importance. The same hydration cleavage that occurs during the aging of nonswelling clays for ceramic use also acts to break up cuttings and soften the borehole during drilling operations. The mechanism of cleavage of the crystalline aggregates of illitic, kaolinitic and other nonswelling clays; and the chemical means of controlling this cleavage are therefore of considerable significance to the drilling mud chemistry. Inasmuch as there is little reference in the drilling mud literature to the cleavage reactions of nonswelling clays, the structure of these clays and certain properties that relate to the mechanism of clay cleavage will be reviewed briefly. IT has long been realized among metallurgists that a fast, reliable method for the quantitative determination of the percentage of microconstituents in an alloy would be of great benefit in studies of equilibrium and transformation in the solid state. For example, Polushkin1 has shown that the compositions of two coexisting phases in a a binary system at a given temperature may be calculated very simply with the aid of two alloys lying in the two-phase field if the relative amounts of the two phases in each alloy can be determined. Recently, Grange and Stewart2 have traced the course of the austenite-martensite reaction in a series of commercial steels by making visual estimates of the percentage of martensite formed as a function of cooling temperature. The correlation of mechanical properties with structure, a subject of wide-spread current interest, is likewise dependent upon quantitative microanalysis.3 Yet, there are very few investigations described in the metallurgical literature, wherein methods of quantitative microscopy are employed. Usually, the relative amounts of the microconstituents are estimated in a qualitative or semiquantitative way. The authors were faced with this problem some time ago in studying the kinetics of austenite decomposition. Several aspects of, this research could not be treated satisfactorily by other quantitative tools, such as specific volume,4 magnetic,5 dilatometric,6 electrical resistance7 or x-ray measurements.8 It became necessary to find an impersonal quantitative method that could be applied to microstructures. Fortunately, it was noted that geologists and petrographers had coped with quantitative microscopy to a considerable degree in their attempts to evaluate the mineral contents of rocks. A number of excellent articles were found on this subject, and since they appear to be unknown generally to many metallurgists, the first part of the present paper is concerned with a review of the literature in some detail. With this survey as a background, the authors have adapted the so-called methods of point-counting and lineal analysis to metallography, as described in the second part of the paper. Austenite-martensite structures were selected for illustration not only because they are important in many ways, but because such fine intermixtures are notoriously difficult to estimate visually. LITERATURE SURVEY Perhaps the earliest work on quantitative microscopic analysis goes back to Delesse9 (1848) who proved mathemati-

Cast X-40 alloy with the lowest nitrogen content studied had a 100-hr rupture stress at 1500°F about equal to the reported value for the commercial alloy. Increases in nitrogen content progressively decreased the rupture strength, and with about 0.1 to 0.2 pct N a minimum strength was reached, but there was no accompanying change in microstructure. Further increases in nitrogen resulted in the fomzation of progressively increasing amounts of a lamellar, pearlitic-type structure at the grain boundaries, with accompanying increases in rupture strength, and above about 0.25 to 0.33 pct N, the rupture strength exceeded the normally reported values. Two series of melts representing different melting stocks exhibited minimum rupture strengths at different nitrogen contents. This suggests that some unidentwed trace element not removed by vacuum melting has a strong influence on the response of this alloy to variations in nitrogen content. In a series of melts with manganese contents ranging from 0.6 to 3.2 pct, the material with the lowest manganese content had the highest 100-hr rupture strength at 1500°F. The manganese variations had no appreciable effect on the microstructure. CAST cobalt-base alloys such as X-40* exhibit high strengths at elevated temperatures (1500°F and above), but they also show considerable scatter in high-temperature properties. Since the design of parts for critical applications must be based on the minimum expected properties, this broad scatter appreciably lowers the design strength of the alloy. If the relatively poor properties exhibited by a few test parts from any given group could be improved, the spread in properties would be narrowed, and the design stress could more closely approach the average expected properties. The purpose of this research investigation was to learn what were the causes of these erratic properties and, if possible, to find methods for eliminating them. Earlier unpublished work showed that vacuum melting markedly influenced the high-temperature strength of cast X-40 alloy. There were indications that this behavior may have been the result of changes in the nitrogen or manganese content of the castings. Consequently, in the current investigation, the influence of variations in nitrogen and manganese content on the structure and high-temperature properties of cast X-40 alloy was studied. In this program, X-40 melting stock was vacuum melted to produce a base material that was very low in nitrogen content and in volatile trace elements. Additions were then made to this base material to produce alloys of the desired composition. The metal was cast into investment molds producing coupons which were machined into stress-rupture bars. These bars were subjected to stress-rupture tests and me-tallographic study to determine the influence of changes in analyses (nitrogen and manganese content) on the structure and properties. Material—The melting stock used for these experi-ments was in the form of shot from two master heats of commercial X-40 alloy. Only one master heat was used in a given series of melts. Thus, any differences in structure or properties that showed up in the specimens from a given series would be the result only of the intended variations in composition. Miscible phase displacement of oil from reservoirs has been emphasized in the past few years. The reason for this emphasis lies in the high oil recovery attainable by this process. Removal of capillary effects in the reservoir leads to recoveries approaching 100 per cent in the area contacted by the miscible phase. The miscible slug process is one means of obtaining a miscible displacement. Here a band or slug of I,PG is injected into the reservoir prior to gas injection. The idea is to maintain the band of LPG "wedged" between the gas and oil phases and thus achieve a miscible phase displacement. A second method lor achieving miscibility is through the injection of a gas which is not miscible with the reservoir fluid but which develops a zone of miscibility in [he reservoir through mass trans-ier with the reservoir oil.' This mass transfer results in either an enrichment of the lean injected gas by intermediates from the oil or an enrichment of the oil by intermediates from a rich injection gas or one that has been enriched on the surface by LPG addition. We are interested here in discussing the process in which miscibility is developed at the displacement front by the evaporation of interrnediatcs from the oil phase into the gas phase. This process "builds up" its own slug of miscible material at the displacement front and therefore does not require the injection of LPG to obtain miscibil-ily. Each process has its own area of applicability. Generally, the high pressure gas process is applicable only with reservoir fluids which con-!ain a high concentration of inter- mediates. If the high pressure gas process is technically feasible at pressures less than 4,500 psi, it is probably more desirable economically than the slug process. The slug process has broad applicability in the shallower reservoirs and with reservoir fluids which contain a relatively low concentration of LPG and natural gasoline constituents. This paper deals with some new concepts of the high pressure gas injection process where it is proposed that flue gas can be substituted for hydrocarbon gas without sacrificing our goal of miscibility. MECHANISM Introduction Considerable effort has been devoted to study of the mechanics ot the high pressure gas injection proc-one generalization result-ing from some of these studies was that the composition of the injected gas is relatively unimportant in establishing the miscibility pressure* for a given reservoir fluid. This generalization is correct for the composition range of gases typically encountered in the field. Two such gases are a gasoline plant tail gas containing 85 per cent methane and 15 per cent ethane, and a field separator gas containing 70 per cent methane and 30 per cent heavier components. The most important factor which sets the miscibility pressure in the operation is the reservoir fluid composition, particularly the concentration of LPG-natural gasoline constituents. The injected gas is the agent by which the LPG-natural gasoline constituents are concentrated at the displacing front to create a miscible displacement. Based on these results, it appeared feasible that some inexpensive gas, such as flue gas, might be substituted for hydrocarbon gas for use in the high pressure gas process. A re-examination of the phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process should clarify the principle behind using flue gas (essentially nitrogen) as an injection gas. Three Component Diagram The phase relations of the high pressure gas injection process have been illustrated by the use of the three component diagrams.'," In Fig. 1 we have arbitrarily represented the multi-component reservoir system by three components; methane, ethane through hexane, and heptanes plus. The solid curve ABC is the phase boundary curve. It represents the locus of compositions which have fixed saturation pressure at a fixed temperature; the lower branch AB shows bubble point compositions, the upper branch BC, the dew point compositions. Point B is the coniposition of the critical mixture at this temperature and pressure. The dashed lines (tie lines) connect vapor and liquid compositions which are in equilibrium. Let us consider Reservoir Fluid D which we wish to displace in 21 miscible manner by gas injection. Let us further restrict the discussion to the case where miscibility between an injection gas and the reservoir fluid at the displacement front is developed by gas enrichment in the reservoir. For this case, any gas whose composition lies between Points C and E on the right side of the three component diagram can be used to give a miscible displacement of Reservoir Fluid D. This is true because the more mobile injected gas moves faster than the displaced oil and is in continuous contact with virgin oil at the displacement front. Although the noble building provided in New York City by Mr. Carnegie for the United Engineering Society has been pushed to about half-completion, the ceremony of laying its corner-stone was not performed until Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 1906. The stone lies just back of the southeast corner of the building, on the north side-of West 39th Street. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie, Miss Whitfield, the sister of Mrs. Carnegie, Ralph W. Pope, Secretary of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, Frederick R. Hutton, Secretary of the. Society of Mechanical Engineers, Rossiter W. Raymond, Secretary of the Institute of Mining Engineers, Charles H. Haswell, the first Chief Engineer of the United States Navy (1836-1851), now in his ninety-seventh year, John Fritz, of the Bethlehem Steel Company, William H. Fletcher, President of the Engineers' Club, E. E. Olcott, President of United Engineering Society, and other interested friends. After an inspection of the interior of the building, the group formed about the corner-stone, which had been draped with the American flag. The exercises were opened by Mr. Olcott, who appropriately welcomed Mr. Carnegie, and briefly expressed the essential value of the building, saying, in part " The societies to be housed underneath this roof have as their aim the pre¬serving and putting in tangible form of the records of scientific accomplishments so as to avoid the repetition of mistakes. The possibility of finding the records of these results all at one center, so near the great Public Library of our city, will be an inestimable advantage to all professions. It is an occasion of no ordinary moment, therefore, when we can welcome Mr. Carnegie and have him lay for us the corner-stone of this great building which his liberality has provided." Mr. Carnegie responded in happy vein, thanking the committee for their greeting, and expressing his pleasure. in being able to do what he had done to further so worthy a cause. THE over-all picture of safety in mining has been encouraging during the past few years, and in mining activities as a whole the trend in accident occurrence is downward. This is the more noteworthy when the type of labor used in mines during the war period is taken into consideration. The drafting of young mining employees into the armed services and the departure of others for work in other war industries took a heavy toll of young, husky, active men. Their places were taken in large part by older men who returned to the mines, or by inexperienced men with little if any knowledge of mining. Despite the lack of labor and especially of skilled labor, and the difficulty of obtaining new equipment as well as maintaining and replacing worn or broken equipment, and numerous other difficulties the mining industry not only reached and maintained maximum production but made the increase with little if any sacrifice of safety. In recent years there has been much interest in eutectic solidification and several theories have been proposed. One of the confusing factors is the existence of various morphologies in which the solidified phases may form. The lamellar microstructure seems to be most common in metal eutectics, and it has been claimed' that all regular eutectics should be lamellar if sufficiently pure. However, there still remain eutectic alloys which are not lamellar or which change their morphology as a function of growth conditions. The eutectic between zinc and the intermetallic phase Mg2Znll was chosen for this investigation because it has been found to solidify in more than one morphology. The diagram in anssen' locates the eutectic point at 3.0 wt pct Mg and 367°C. lliott gives 364°C as the eutectic temperature, leaving the phase compositions unaltered. Since the growth conditions determine the micro-structure of the solidified alloy, the factors controlling the transition from one morphology to another could be studied. The lamellae to rods transition is of particular interest. PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from carefully weighed portions of 99.999 pct Zn and 99.97 pct Mg by melting in Pyrex containers under argon and casting into graphite boats. The resulting ingots were remelted under argon and solidified unidirectionally in a horizontal tube furnace at growth rates ranging from 2.0 to more than 50 cm per hr under a temperature gradient, measured over a 5-cm length, of 9" to 14°C per cm. The solid-liquid interface appeared to be planar at all growth rates although no attempt was made to confirm this by decantation or quenching. A few ingots were allowed to freeze uncontrolled. Most alloys were of the nominal eutectic composition, 3.0 wt pct Mg according to Hansen2 and lliott, but some contained as much as 3.35 wt pct Mg. Chemical analyses were not run since metallographic examination confirmed that the desired composition was achieved. Specimens were cut from the middle portion of the ingot normal to the growth axis, polished mechanically, and etched with 2 pct Nital. Suitable areas were selected for the determination of crystallographic orientation relationships by a tiontechniqueof described previously by one of the authors.4 The (2310) planes of zinc and the (8701, {944}? (1032) planes of Mg2Znll were found suitable for orientation determination; experimental error was on the order of 2 or 3 deg. RESULTS Three different morphologies were found in the unidirectionally solidified alloys: lamellar eutectic, rod-like eutectic, and a structure whose most predominant characteristic was the presence of three-vaned (cellular) dendrites of Mg2Znll. These dendrites were only found in alloys with more than the eutectic amount of magnesium. In some ingots fine hexagonal needles of Mg2Znll surrounding a core of MgZn2 were observed. They were probably due to incomplete alloying and seemed to have no effect on the eutectic morphology. In addition hexagonal spirals like those discussed by Fullman and wood5 and Hunt and acksonh ere observed in some ingots frozen without directional control. Both MgZZn,, and MgZnz were detected by X-ray diffraction in these alloys. Since the morphology could not be grown unidirectionally and no characteristic orientation relationship between the phases was found, further study was limited to the lamellar: rodlike, and three-vaned dendrite morphologies. Alloys of Eutectic Composition, No Dendrites. The mcrostructures of allovs with no three-vaned dendrites were either lamellar or rodlike depending on the growth rate. At rates below 10 cm per hr the morphology was lamellar, consisting of two sets of parallel plates intersecting at about 54 deg like the Mg-MgzSn eutectic described by raft.7 At growth rates faster than 14 cm per hr the microstructure showed rods of zinc in a matrix of MgnZnll, while intermediate rates yielded mixtures of rods and lamellae in small groups. The lamellar "grains" were often several millimeters in cross section, but contained small irregular areas which divided each grain into perfect islands 100 or 200 p in diam. Lamellae were parallel to each other throughout the grain in spite of these defects in the structure, Fig. 1. Rods, on the other hand, could only be produced in small groups arranged like fish scales and separated by irregular areas of appreciable thickness, Fig. 2. To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore ex- ploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composi- tion laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, varia- tions are functions of distance. Hence, in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it.

Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center's 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."' The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.

A series of experiments were carried out in which the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts Mere measured during essentially one-dimensional freezing of Al-Cu alloys. The dimensions of the ingots were 3 by 5 by 6 in. Three different alloys containing 0.1, 4.5, and 17 pct Cu were used in these experitments. For each alloy the rate of heat removal was varied to give a total jreezing time in the range 3 to 30 min. The results of these measurements cowlpared favorably with the theoretical model of freezing of binary alloys with time-dependent surface temperature. IN engineering analysis of solidification of commercia1 steels and nonferrous alloys it is a common practice to assume that an alloy freezes by propagation of an isothermal solidification front, i.e., essentially as a pure metal. In two recent theoretical investigations'j2 the present authors explored the possibility of a more realistic approach to the problem of solidification of alloys. In the proposed model the freezing of an alloy is assumed to take place by propagation of two isothermal fronts, i.e., the liquidus front and the solidus (or eutectic) front. The region between the two fronts contains both liquid and solid and is referred to as the solid-liquid region. The width and the solid content of the solid-liquid region vary with alloy type, solute concentration, and cooling rate. For a given alloy system, initial concentration of solute, and the mode of heat removal, the proposed model yields the temperature distribution within the solid skin, temperature, solid fraction, and concentration distributions with the solid-liquid region, and the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the solidus fronts. This model is obviously of considerable practical importance in engineering analysis of solidification processes, since it gives a more realistic estimate of skin strength during solidification and a better estimate of the total freezing time. Before the new model can be used with confidence, however, it is necessary to test this model experimentally. The experimental testing of the proposed model is a relatively simple matter since the effects to be measured are large and a relatively simple experiment will suffice. The theoretical model predicts, for example, that during freezing of an alloy containing substitutional type solute (negligible diffusion in the solid during freezing) the solid-liquid region occupies an appreciable portion of the ingot, even at low concentration of solute.' IMD retical model, easily verifiable by experiment, is that the rate of propagation of the solidus (or eutectic) front increases as the solidus front approaches the center of the slab. This prediction is contrary to well-known behavior of the solidification front during freezing of pure metals, where the rate of propagation of the solidification front decreases with time and freezing is completed at the lowest rate. A rather severe test of the proposed model is provided by comparison of theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of the effects of cooling rate and composition on the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts. In order to test the soundness of the formulation and the method of solution of the problem of solidification of alloys a series of experiments were carried out in which the rates of propagation of the liquidus and the eutectic fronts were measured during essentially one-dimensional solidification of A1-Cu alloys. The A1-Cu system was chosen strictly as a matter of convenience. Three different alloys containing 0.1, 4.5, and 17 pct Cu were used in these experiments. For each alloy the rate of heat removal was varied to give the total freezing time in the range 3 to 30 min. The results of these measurements are compared with the predictions of the theoretical model of solidification of binary alloys, with time-dependent surface temperature.' Before the experiments described in this paper were undertaken, a serious attempt was made to utilize the measurements of previous investigators to test the theoretical model. In the course of this preliminary study a careful review was made of experiments of Pellini and coworkers3 and Doherty and Melf~rd.~ The measurements in Pellini's work were carried out using a steel containing at least four major components. Evaluation of the solid fraction-temperature relation for this steel (required in the theoretical model) is difficult and uncertain. Doherty and Melford, on the other hand, measured the solid fraction-temperature relation experimentally, but did not give sufficient data to explore the effects of composition and the cooling rates on solidification. Hence it was not possible to utilize these measurements to test our theoretical model. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The experimental technique used in this investigation differs somewhat from the more conventional techniques employed in solidification studies. This technique was developed primarily to eliminate con-vective mixing in the molten metal caused by pouring of molten metal into the mold. WHEN the white pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries advanced from the coastal settlements of southern Africa into the interior of the subcontinent, they found it inhabited, more or less sparsely, by brown or black peoples mainly of pastoral habits but equipped with a fighting spirit and certain fighting weapons. Some of the tribes were smiths, others were miners and metallurgists; all used fuel, either industrially or domestically. Some of that fuel was wood, some cattle dung, and in some places the natives mined outcrop coal. Coal was first discovered by Europeans in Natal about 1840. After proper deliberation and after allowing due time for a consideration of all the implications, the Natal Government decided in 1881 (40 years after) to import an English expert to investigate and report on the discovery. Things then moved rapidly, and in what to a geologist is the remarkably short space of eight years, Natal collieries were producing at the rate of nearly 30,000 long tons per annum or 100 long tons per working day!
