Abstract
In the old Kentucky reports, made by the Survey of which Prof. Owen was director, the veins of the Western Kentucky coal-field were numbered from 1 up to 12. Later Prof. Shaler used letters, beginning at the top. For instance, Owen's 12 is Shaler's A.
