The drying of fine coal involves special techniques, which are discussed and analyzed. Types of dryers employing these techniques are described. Calculations are presented for new methods of dealing with the entrained dust that is always present in fine coal drying operations. NEW conditions, new requirements, and new methods have increased the demand for more efficient and more economical methods of drying fine coal. Dewatering of larger sizes may reduce the surface moisture to 8 or 9 pct. It is more difficult, however, to dewater sizes below 1/4 in., and some filter cakes still contain as much as 20 or 25 pct moisture. Increased freight rates and stricter consumer specifications have resulted in a demand for further reductions in moisture content. This can be obtained only by heat drying. Most modern methods of heat drying disperse or spread the mass of coal to be dried, in an atmosphere of dry hot gases. The more intimate the contact between coal particles and hot gases, the quicker and more efficient the drying operation will be. Two different techniques are generally employed, using either a fluidized condition or an entrained condition of the coal to be dried. Fluidized Condition Fluidization of a body of sand was defined and explained by Fraser and Yancey in a paper published in 1926.' This condition was artificially obtained and maintained by proper regulation of the rate of air flowing through the sand body. "The sand bath 'boils' uniformly on the surface," they write, "and feels like a fluid." The fluidization technique was also described and analyzed by Steinmetzer2 in connection with the operation of an air cleaning table. His main conclusions are as follows: "Fluidity is, for the particles involved, the possibility of motion with minimum friction. . . . Then fluidity requires the introduction of various forms of energy capable of neutralising frictions. Two solutions can be used— air and/or mechanical motions (such as the shaking motion of the carrying deck of the air table). The combination of mechanical and air energy will give the widest margins of size ratios and of bed thickness, translated in capacity per unit area of the carrying table." Richardson and Langston3 have indicated results obtained with a dryer working with a fluidized bed. They used a vertical tube type of dryer, however, without the assistance of any mechanical energy, and without any lateral motion of the fluidized bed. The capacity of such a dryer is too limited for practical applications, since the speed of the acceptable air currents is held to the speed of fall of the particles involved. Capacities as low as 182 Ib of coal per hr per sq ft of dryer area are indicated. As stated by Richardson: "A basic limitation to a fluidised bed dryer is that the velocities of the gas must be held within a definite range; with velocities of 10 ft per second, all coal minus 6 mesh in size will be entrained, and the operation is then similar to that of a Flash dryer." A fluidized bed must be virtually static. The coal particles simply kept in suspension offer a minimum resistance to the flow of gases, insuring the most favorable conditions for rapid evaporation of surface moisture. However, very wet fine coal, i.e., over 12 pct of surface moisture, will be delivered in the forms of mud balls, or as a soggy, sticky mass, almost impossible to disperse, sticking and acting as a wet blanket on the deck. Strong currents of gases and wide deck perforations will be required to punch holes in the wet mass and gradually loosen and fluidize it. The mechanics of fluidizing a bed of coal in a gas medium for the purpose of obtaining the most efficient drying condition are entirely similar when the fluid used is water and the purpose is to break up and distend a bed of coal to be cleaned so that perfect stratification according to densities will be insured. Purely mechanical energy is used in the basket-type jig, water pulsations in the piston and in the Baum-type jigs. A combination of mechanical motion and of air pulsation offers the most efficient and favorable conditions. Entrained Condition The most critical factor to be considered in the design of a dryer employing the entrained condition technique is the speed of the hot gases to be circulated in the drying column. With insufficient gas velocity, excessive amounts of the largest sizes will drop to the bottom of the dryer column without being thoroughly dried. On the other hand, high gas velocity will cause degradation, dust losses, and high power consumption. Figs. 1 and 2, reproduced from Hanot,4 show the relative importance of speed and temperature for various sizes of particles. It can be seen, for instance, that to maintain in unstable equilibrium particles of 1/4-in. size in a gas current at 500°C, a speed of 30 meters per sec, or 6000 fpm, will be required. For % -in. particles an almost prohibitive speed of 45 meters per sec, or 9000 fpm, will be necessary. In practice, maximum gas velocities of 3000 fpm are recommended; since power increases as the cube of the velocity, it can be seen that beyond certain limits such dryers would not be economical. INTRODUCTION Underground fires continue to be one of the most serious hazards to life and property in the mining industry. Although underground mines are analogous to high-rise buildings where persons are isolated from immediate escape or rescue, application of technology to locate and control fire hazards while still in their controllable state is slow to be implemented in underground mines. Even in large surface structures such as hotels, often only fire protection systems which meet minimal laws are implemented due to the high cost of adding extensive extinguishing systems, isolation barriers, alternate ventilation, escape routes and alarm systems. Incomplete and ineffective protection occasionally is evidenced where costs would not seem to be a factor, such as the $211 million MGM Grand Hotel fire November 21, 19801. Paramount in increasing fire safety and decreasing the threat of serious fire is early warning followed by proper decision analysis to perform the correct action. However, very complex fire situations can be produced in structures such as high-rise buildings and underground mines simply because of the distances between the numerous fire-potential locations and fire safe areas. Other complexities arise when normal activities occur that emit products of combustion signaling a fire condition to a sensitive fire/smoke sensor. For example, the operation of diesel equipment or the performance of regular blasting can produce combustion products that reach the sensitive alarm points of many sensors2. Smoke detectors for surface installations provide fire warning when occupants are at a distant location or when sleeping, thus greatly reducing injuries and property damage. However, when installed in the harsh environments of underground mines, fire and smoke detection equipment soon becomes inoperative, unreliable, or requires excessive maintenance. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has performed many studies and tests to improve fire and smoke protection for underground mine workers3. This paper describes several USBM safety programs which included in-mine testing with mine fire and smoke sensors, telemetry and instrumentation to develop recommendations for improving mine fire safety. It is hoped that the technology developed during these programs can be added to other programs to provide the mining industry with the necessary fire safety facts. By recognizing fire potentials and being provided with cost-effective, proven components that will perform reliably under the poor environmental conditions of mining, mine operators can provide protection for their working life and property equal to that which they provide for themselves and their families at home. The basis of this report is two USBM programs for fire protection in metal and nonmetal mines4,5 and one coal program6. The data was collected beginning in May 1974 and continuing through the present with underground tests of a South African fire system installed at Magma Mine in Superior, Arizona, and a computer-assisted, experimental system at Peabody Coal Mine in Pawnee, Illinois. The conduct of each program was as follows: • Define the problem and its magnitude in the industry • Develop concepts to solve or diminish the problem • Review available hardware or systems approaches to fit the concepts • Install and demonstrate the performance of a prototype system through fire tests in an operating mine. MINE FIRE FACTS Whether in coal or metal and nonmetal mines, the potential severity of fire hazard is directly related to location. As shown in Figure 1, fire in intake air at zones A, B, C or D can cause contamined air to route throughout the mine quickly if not detected, isolated or rerouted. Causes and location of former metal and nonmetal fires are represented in Table 1; the cause and location of fatalities and injuries is shown in Table 2. Coal-related fires and their impact on deaths and injuries are graphed in Figure 2; their locations are described in Table 37. Significantly the table shows that the hazard to personnel was three times greater for fires occurring in shaft or slope areas, and the percentage of deaths and injuries was four times that of other areas. Number of Persons Affected A 129-mine sample indicated that from 8 to 479 employees per shift work in underground metal and nonmetal mines, and that deeper mines have larger populations, as shown in Figure 3. Coal mining relates similar employment, and a 16-state sample of 670 mines employing at least 25 persons shows the distribution in Figure 4. Drift mines accounted for 58 percent of the sample but employ only 45 percent of the underground workers.

The slip mode activated during the c axis compression of single crystals of commercial-purity ingot SR beryllium, high-purity (twelve-zone-pass) beryllium, and Be-4.4 wt pct Cu and Be-5.2 wt pct Ni alloys in the temperature range of 25° to 364°C was determined using two-surface slip trace analysis, slip-step height analysis, and electron transmission microscopy. All three techniques indicated the occurrence of copious pyramidal {1 122) (1123) slip in the alloys over the entire temperature range, the amount increasing with temperature. Pyramidal slip was also indicated in the high-purity beryllium by slip trace analysis and electron transmission microscopy, but the amount was somewhat less than in the alloys. For the commercial-purity ingot crystals, only a very small number of pyramidal slip lines were observed, and these were in the immediate vicinity of the fracture surface. No pyramidal dislocations could be detected by electron transmission microscopy in this material. Dislocatransmissiontions with Burgers vectors [0001] and +(ll20) were identified by electron transmission microscopy inthe (1122) slip bands, as well as those with the j (1123) vector. This was interpreted to indicate that the edge components of the 3(1123) vector dislocations activated during c axis compression dissociate upon unloading according to the reaction i (1123) — [0001] + 3(1120) THE microstrain c axis compression of single crystals of commercial-purity ingot SR beryllium (99.6 pct), high-purity twelve-zone-pass beryllium (99.98 pct), Be-5.24 pct Ni and Be-4.37 pct Cu alloys was described in a previous paper.1 This paper covers in detail the analysis of slip traces observed on two mutually perpendicular lateral surfaces of these specimens, and a detailed description of transmission electron microscopy studies performed on foils cut from the bulk crystals after they had been deformed to fracture in the c axis compression. Observation of slip traces on single surfaces of deformed single crystals are generally insufficient to positively identify slip or twinning modes. The use of two carefully cut and oriented perpendicular surfaces can greatly aid in the positive identification and index- ing of slip traces, although even this technique may be quite inadequate if more than one type of slip system operates and if an insufficient number of traces are observed on the surfaces. The problem is greatly simplified for symmetric cases like that for c axis compression of an hep crystal such as beryllium, in which the operating slip systems are all equally inclined to the direction of the applied stress, and each slip system of a given slip mode has an equal chance of operating. For such cases, the traces of any given slip mode observed on the surfaces cut parallel to the c axis are symmetrically tilted about the c axis. It is therefore possible to quickly determine whether one or more slip modes are operating. Confirmatory evidence in support of the observations made on the external surfaces can be obtained from foils cut from the deformed crystals and examined by transmission electron microscopy. This latter technique serves to identify not only the operating slip plane but also the Burgers vector of the dislocations which participate in the slip. For this purpose, a simplified technique based upon a double tetrahedron notation is used in the present paper. The planes and directions in the hep lattice are all designated by letters rather than indices and extinction conditions are easily determined if the Burgers vector lies in the plane contributing to the diffraction. RESULTS 1) Slip Trace Analysis. The standard (0001) stereo-graphic projection of beryllium is shown in Fig. 1. The two mutually perpendicular, lateral surfaces of the compression specimen are represented by the diametrical planes AA' and BB', also referred to as surface A and surface B. For the specific case represented (a Be-5.24 pct Ni specimen deformed by c axis compression at room temperature), the A surface is tilted 5 deg to the (10i0') plane and the B surface is tilted 5 deg to the (1120) plane. Two surface trace analyses may be facilitated by examining in turn the intersection of various great circle traces of specific pyramidal planes with two surfaces and comparing the angles made with the (0001) plane with those actually observed on the two surfaces. One then identifies the slip traces by trial and error on a best-fit basis. The (1122) type planes (it was found that slip occurred on these planes) are shown plotted on the stereographic projection in Fig. 1. Kuczynski's formula has been derived for the case of nonspherical particles. TWO formulae of Kuczynski's type have been derived, one describing the increase in tensile strength, the other describing the progress of shrinkage of a powder compact. It has been strength,shown that the exponents of all three formulae each contain two magnitudes of different physical characters, viz, the geometrical factor a and the kinetic factor ß. The interrelationships between the three exponents are stated. SOME years ago Kuczynski1 experimentally showed that the radius, x, of the area of contact between very small spherical metal particles and a metallic block is related to the time of sintering, t, by the following equation x = constant tk [11 where k has the value 1/5 or 1/7. Assuming that the metal particles were perfect spheres and the metallic block was perfectly flat, he derived the foregoing equation from theoretical considerations of the process of material transport in metals, and he showed that exponent k is different for different mechanisms of transport, e.g., k = 1/2 for viscous flow (according to Frenkel2), k = 1/3 for evaporation and condensation, k = 1/5 for volume diffusion, and k = 1/7 for surface diffusion. From this Kuczynski concluded that the mechanism of transport was either volume diffusion or surface diffusion, depending on whether the value of k, as found in his experiments, was 1/5 or 1/7. Subsequently. Cabrera8 corrected Kuczynski's calculations with regard to surface diffusion, showing that the theoretical value of exponent k is 1/5 for both volume and surface diffusion. He supposed that the different experimental values of k were due to slight differences in the shape of the metal particles. An exponential relationship similar to the aforementioned was found by Okamura, Masuda, and Kikuta,4 Masuda and Kikuta, and Takasaki8 when studying the rate of shrinkage on powder compacts during sintering. The authors measured the shrinkage by means of the fraction w = Vp — V./Vp — V,,,, where V,, is the volume of the green compact, V, is the volume of the sintered compact, and V,,, is the volume of the compact in its densest state. This fraction, w, they found, is related to the time of sintering, t, by the equation w == constant tm. [21 Further, Bockstiegel, Masing, and Zapf7 observed that the tensile strength, s, of sintering iron powder compacts can also be related to the time of sintering, t, by an equation of the foregoing type, i.e., s = constant tn. [3] For exponent n the values 0.28 (S=2/7) and 0.35 ( 2/5) were obtained, and the authors pointed out that there might exist a simple interrelation between exponent n as found in their experiments and exponent k in Kuczynski's equation. The authors supposed that 2k = n, since the strength of adhesion between a metal sphere and a block (as in Kuczyn-ski's experiments) must approximately be proportional to their contact area, p. x2. Theoretical Considerations This paper is an attempt to correlate the fundamental experiments of Kuczynski's type with the results obtained with powder compacts as represented by Egs. 2 and 3. In particular, the paper is to show how the rate of sintering is influenced by the geometry of the sintering particles and by the type of material transport. As the geometry of particles conglomerating in a powder compact is very complex, some simplifying assumption has to be made, of course, in order to adapt the problem to mathematical treatment. In the following paragraph a suitable simplification is introduced, and Kuczynski's formula is derived for the case of nonsphcrical particles. Relation Between Area of Contact and Sintering Time—As the face of contact between two particles in a sintering powder compact is not necessarily a circle (as in the case of spheres sintering to a block), Kuczynski's formula is modified as follows: Let the perimeter of the face of contact be described by means of polar coordinates R, 4, as shown in Fig. la, so the area of contact, f, is determined by f= 1/2 . Six creep laws for salt, each fitted to the same laboratory data base, are used in a numerical model of the deformation of an opening in salt to determine the influence of creep law form on the predicted closures. Results show that predicted closures can be very sensitive to the functional form of the creep law chosen to model the laboratory data.

The challenge to designers of bulk materials handling systems is to apply the existing technology in areas where it has not been used and to foster better, cheaper and safer job performance. The Dashaveyor Co., a subsidiary of The Bendix Corp., built and tested a pilot system at Copper Range's White Pine mine. Based upon this success, a prototype system development was begun in 1967 to test the concepts in a full-scale, realistic environment.

The present mine at White Pine has been extracting low grade copper ore by mechanized room-and-pillar methods for approximately eleven years. Increasing depth of mining is decreasing the extraction ratio. It is desirable to mine a higher grade product by extracting values only and increase recovery of the available natural resource. These factors led to the consideration of a caving method such as longwalling. GEOLOGY The White Pine orebody consists of two mineralized shale horizons separated by a relatively barren zone of shale and sandstone. These gently dipping sediments lie at the base of the Nonesuch shale formation and are of late Precambrian age.

As the established tailings disposal techniques do not meet the requirements of today, alternative methods of disposal are explored. McIntyre Mines Ltd., Coal Div. found a solution in the construction and operation of a tailings dewatering plant. The solids are recovered from the tailings slurry by means of mechanical dewatering equipment and are then dried in a unique drying system to provide an excellent thermal fuel for a power generating station.

THE Tralee preparation plant, owned and operated by the Semet-Solvay division of Allied Chemical and Dye Corp., is located on the Virginian rail- way, near Mullens, Wyoming County, W. Va., and the mine, which is in the Winding Gulf district, produces coal exclusively from Pocahontas No. 3 seam. The property, comprising 4900 acres, is leased from the Pocahontas Land Corp. Prior to 1930 four separate mines were operated in this tract, some having been started about 1916.
