Quench aging of supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium takes place in reasonable times in the temperature range 300&apos; to 500°C. Changes in internal friction, hardness, and electrical resistivity are found to accompany this change. THERE is practically no detailed information in the literature concerning interstitial solid solutions in either columbium or tantalum. The fact that both of these metals are used extensively commercially in both pure and alloyed states makes studies of their properties of value. While the plan is to study both these metals and their alloys extensively, so far only a small number of measurements have been made. This paper presents data obtained in the initial investigations of columbium. The principal interstitial impurities of columbium are likely to be hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen. The first of these, hydrogen, is outside the scope of internal friction measurements at present and nothing quantitative is known about the initial hydrogen content of the specimens. However, it is believed that it is completely absent after the preliminary heat treatments are carried out. The carbon content of the original samples is low and can be reduced still further during sample preparation. Oxygen is normally present to some extent in columbium and can also be added or removed easily. Nitrogen is also normally present in small amounts and can also be controlled within limits. Since it is not possible yet to remove all the nitrogen from columbium and since it is possible to remove essentially all the oxygen and carbon, initial measurements were made on the alloy system nitrogen in columbium. In this sense then, the alloys are true binary alloys. Little is known about the effects of nitrogen on the physical and metallurgical properties of columbium, so it was necessary to perform some rather elementary measurements on the specimens. These measurements are described briefly in the next section and are discussed in detail in later sections. Scope of the Work That internal friction is associated with diffusion of nitrogen in columbium has been known for some time. It is similar in nature to that for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron. In these latter cases, the information obtained from internal friction has been useful metallurgically.&apos; and it is not too much to expect useful information from similar studies on columbium containing nitrogen. The technique of internal friction measurements is adequately described by Ke2 At a frequency of 1 cps the internal friction peak for nitrogen in columbium occurs at 300°C and that for oxygen at 160°C." So that all the measurements will be meaningful metallurgically, the internal friction has been calibrated by making a measurement of the damping at the two peaks and a measurement of oxygen and nitrogen content by chemical analysis. A comparison of the two gives the following calibration factor: To go from damping capacity expressed in terms of 1/Q to weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution in columbium, multiply the peak values of internal friction by about 4 and 3 respectively." Data from which these factors were calculated are presented in Table I. The increase of electrical resistance of columbium caused by the addition of oxygen and nitrogen as interstitial impurities has been quantitatively determined. At room temperature the percentage increase is small for small additions of impurities (<0.1 wt pct); as the temperature is lowered it becomes an increasingly larger factor of the total resistance. An empirical relation has been established to express the resistivity at — 195°C in terms of weight percent of oxygen and nitrogen in solid solution. It is easy to make supersaturated solid solutions of nitrogen in columbium and to observe aging phenomena. The optimum aging temperature, as in the case for carbon and nitrogen in a-iron, occurs at the temperature for which the time necessary for a single place-change in diffusion is about 1 to 10 millisec. This means for nitrogen in columbium that significant property changes should take place for this alloy at about 400" to 500°C in reasonable time intervals. Results of such aging experiments are

Summary This paper reviews the developments in uranium process technology as a result of modern trends in the design of ion exchange equipment. The operation of the Cloete-Streat fluidised bed contactor is described and pilot-plant development of this contactor for uranium slurry work at Imperial College is outlined. The properties of a suitable ion exchange resin for slurry treatment are discussed, together with a description of relevant rheological properties of ore suspensions. A prediction of ion exchange resin- slurry behaviour is presented in order to establish the feasible operating limits for this type of R-I-P contactor.

This paper presents the feasibility analyses of terrace pit mining a single seam for depths beyond 33 m (110 feet) in a hypothetical model mine and at an operating mine in southern Illinois. One or two shovel- truck benches near the surface and a large dragline for the last bench are considered for overburden stripping in the proposed mining scheme. Mining and reclamation operations are integrated and reclamation efforts are minimized by proper spoiling techniques. The proposed mining scheme was optimized using the OPMHS (Open Pit Material Handling Simulator) model developed by Penn State. Equipment selection and economic analyses were also conducted using the simulation model. The effect of pertinent variables such as thickness of the coal seam, annual production, initial capital requirements, size of haul trucks, selling price of coal and expected rate of return were analyzed on the feasibility of terrace pit mining. Sensitivity analysis charts for the effect of these variables are presented in the paper.

The chromium, iron, and tungsten borides have been treated with ammonia at different temperatures. They are attacked, forming metal nitride and boron nitride, and the results are summarized in the tables. In the tungsten-nitrogen system a new phase has been observed, closely related to the known ß phase. THE present investigations were begun to determine whether any ternary phases exist in the transition metal-boron-nitrogen systems for the metals chromium, iron, and tungsten. Attempts to prepare such phases were made by using the borides of the metals as starting materials and ammonia as the nitriding agent. Although no new ternary phases have been found to exist, the results may be of some interest with regard to the technical use of the borides. General Procedure A steady stream of dry ammonia was passed through a silica reaction tube, the central part of which was kept at the reaction temperature while its ends were water-cooled. Weighed amounts of the borides were placed in a silica or porcelain boat and heated at different temperatures for a period of 10 to 24 hr. The boat was then rapidly removed from the reaction zone to the quenching zone, the water-cooled end of the tube, by means of a simple magnetic device. The nitrogen content of the products was determined by the increase in weight of the specimens, and the phase analysis was carried out by X-ray methods. For this analysis a Guinier-type camera, constructed at this Institute, was used with a bent, ground quartz crystal monochromator. The general reaction, which occurred in all the experiments, may be summarized as: metal boride + nitrogen -* boron nitride + metal nitride For the higher temperatures pure metal was formed instead of metal nitride. It is sometimes difficult to Discussi detect boron nitride among the reaction products by X-ray methods. Prolonged exposures of some specimens showed, however, that the strongest reflections of boron nitride were present. Additional evidence for its presence was given by the increase in weight of the specimens after nitriding. This increase was always greater than that corresponding to nitride formation only and was often in close agreement with the formula given above. Finally, a white powder, which was shown by X-ray methods to be boron nitride, was left if the reaction products after nitriding Fe,B at 448°C and FeB at 768°C were dissolved in diluted sulphuric acid. Ch rom iu m - Boron - N itrogen Five phases have been found to exist in the Cr-B system,&apos; , and all were used as starting materials. Investigations on the Cr-N system have shown the existence of two nitrides with ideal composition Cr,N and CrN.".&apos; * The results are summarized in Table I. All the borides are attacked and decomposed into chromium nitride and boron nitride, and the kind of nitride formed depends only on the temperature and not on the boride used as starting material. Sixty-five million net tons of coal were carbonized in the by-product and beehive coke ovens1 of the United States during 1924. This tonnage represented 13.4 per cent. of the bituminous coal which was mined in that year. American coals have a wide range of purity and coking quality, and the chief subject of this paper will be the selection of coals for the manufacture of blast furnace, foundry, domestic, and water-gas coke, in by-product coke ovens. It will obviously be necessary to include a discussion of those physical and chemical characteristics that are generally considered essential or desirable for each type of coke. For the past fifty years or more, the structural features of the Cordil-leran mountain system of western United States have presented some most interesting problems. Any geologist or engineer living in this region, or even making occasional examinations of the mines, will lose much of interest and importance if he is not familiar with the literature. Some of the greatest works on geology have been the result of studies carried on in sections of this region. Among the more important of the earlier works are those of Dutton,l King,2 Gilbert3 and Powell;4 of the more recent Lindgren,5 Ransome,6 Spurr,7 Butler8 and others have contributed much. Many of the papers are largely of scientific interest but even these lay the foundation for the commercial application of the broader features of the geology. I have read many of these works with the keenest interest and pleasure; in fact, some have been read until some of the more important findings seem to be my own. In this paper, however, it is my aim to accept credit for little more than the labor of assembling some of the ideas of others. The Copper Canyon CIL-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.

Mr. D. H. BRowne&apos;s paper upon " The Distribution of Phosphorus in the Ludington Mine" (Trans., xvii., 616) has interested me very much, and perhaps I cannot give a better proof of that, interest than an account of my work and observations in the same direction while chemist of the Hudson River Ore and Iron Company. The ores of this company lie in a chain of low hills running northwest and southeast, about three miles back from the eastern bank of the Hudson river, below Hudson, N. Y. They occur in thick veins, with the characteristic Hudson river slate formation as hangingrock and foot-wall, and dip about 45&apos; east, outcropping in many places near the top of the western slopes.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific region differ in some points of geologic features from those of the United States. The deposits distribute along old or active island arcs and are generally younger in age (1-16 m.y. B.P.). In Japan, however, no typical porphyry copper deposits are yet reported, though the geological situation of Japanese islands is similar to that of the southwestern Pacific. Fluid inclusions in some porphyry copper deposits In the southwestern Pacific region and those in igneous rocks genetically related to the ore deposits In Japan have been studied, and the genesis of ore-forming fluids from igneous rocks are discussed. From the results, the possibility of finding porphyry copper-type mineralization in Japan are considered.

Consolidation Coal Co.&apos;s Renton mine, a 680 000-t/y (750,000-stpy) underground operation located in western Pennsylvania, has reduced the time required for overcast construction in its advancing operations by adopting a prebolting technique followed by multiple blasting. In the past, the mine&apos;s overcasts had been excavated by the continuous mining machines used to advance the section. More recently, the overcasts were blasted down and then rebolted with a stoper drill. The new system, using a two-part combination bolt, has proven very successful in speeding up overall construction time and providing more positive horizontal control in blasting. The prebolting approach allows the roof to be blasted down and loaded out without the need for rebolting the shot-out area.

IN the geophysical exploration program of the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range of Northern Michigan, the vertical intensity magnetometer has been used to obtain magnetic anomaly maps of large areas. A network of magnetic base stations has been established and the relative vertical intensity at each station measured carefully with respect to a prime base. In the search for the relatively nonmagnetic soft red hematite ore, the magnetic exploration is indirect, involving the study of dikes, faults, contacts, and other structural features. It was found that the, magnetometer, adjusted to a scale value of approximately 40 y per scale division, was satisfactory for this type of exploration, although many magnetic anomalies were encountered that required the use of auxiliary magnets.

Y.-I would like to emphasize what Mr. Phalen says in his paper regarding the possible utilization of the waste acids in the West for the acid concentration of phosphate rock, and to call attention to the fact that this is already being done by Mr. Laist at Anaconda, who is producing concentrated phosphoric acid from these low-grade rocks. During the last year, he has not been able to carry this along to the extent he, had expected, owing to the tremendous demand which they have had for all the acid they can produce, so instead of having a. surplus of acid, as was expected, they are really short of this material for their electrolytic copper and zinc work.

The mineral garnet, while ordinarily considered a semiprecious gem stone or a second-grade industrial gem, has also proved itself in the field of industrial abrasives. Its use is well known as a sand-paper grain, and as a sandblasting sand its qualities are rapidly becoming recognized in more and more industries. Production of garnet as an abrasive is confined chiefly to two areas in the United States, North Creek, N. Y., where the Barton Mines Corp. operates, and Emerald Creek, Benewah County, Idaho, where the Garnet Mines, Inc., and the Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co. with mills at Fernwood, Idaho, operate. This paper is confined to a discussion of production and marketing of garnet sand by Idaho Garnet Abrasive Co.
