Like the Arizona jeans commercial says: Arizona's not just a state, its a state of mines. Nearly 300 mines operate in Arizona making it the largest nonfuel mining state in the nation. Although copper is king in Arizona's mineral complex, nonmetallic minerals play important roles both regionally and nationally. Throughout Arizona's mineral resource development history industrial minerals have dominated over the metals for most, but not recent years. The State's metal mining industry which makes Arizona the number one mining state in the United States is a relatively young phenomenon. Arizona was an important industrial mineral producer long before her metal mining industry got started. Salt, phosphates, silicates, and oxides as food additives, tanning chemicals, gemstones, components of aboriginal ordnance, pigments, and construction materials are among the minerals produced long before copper, gold, silver, and the other metals became important. Around 92 % of Arizona's mineral industry is made up of nonfuel minerals, 86 % of that is accounted for by copper. Another 4 % is taken up by copper byproducts of molybdenum, silver, and gold. The remaining 10% of the production is occupied by non-fuel, non-metallic minerals. Arizona's 1994 industrial mineral production of nearly $380 million ranks us among the top 25 in the nation and higher than the total mineral production of at least 15 states.

Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

The nature, usage and comparatively rare occurrence of ball clay is described. The importance of these white firing plastic clays in ceramics, particularly in the production of industrial sanitary ware and tiles, is emphasized. The US deposits are briefly discussed. What is known about relevant deposits in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela (the four largest ceramic producers in South America) is also described. The ceramic plants have been sited near the centers of population rather than the plastic clay deposits. At present, extraction is probably concentrated on surface residual deposits and lenses which require minimum investment. Native plastic clays are used exclusively in the tile plants, but in sanitary ware, they are often used as extenders of imported ball clays.

INTRODUCTION Under certain geological and mining conditions mining near the surface results in an intensive destruction of the overlying rock strata. If the system of mine openings remains filled with air after having completed all mining activities because the flooding of the mines depending on the morphology of the mining area does not exceed a certain level, this circumstance might result in dangers for the public. This is particularly true where uncontrollable air- ways occur within the destroyed rock or if former uranium mining areas are concerned. In these areas radon emanation resulting in undue radon concentration should be taken into account. This circumstance can be counteracted by suitable measures of ventilation. In the following the example of a uranium deposit in the Erzgebirge Mountains (Saxon Ore Mountains) is used to illustrate how statements about the ground flow through overlying rock can be made on the basis of systematic investigations. Finally comparisons with experience gained in coal mining yield orientation data which are used as input quantities in ventilation network calculations and in project preparation of mine fans. Last not least it is proved that endangering the population by radon can be excluded by installing an appropriate fan. INITIAL SITUATION From 1946 to 1989 the uranium deposit of Schlemal-Alberode was mined starting from superficial zones down to depths of 1,800 m. The total output amounted to 80,000 t of uranium, i.e. Schlemal Alberode is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The mine openings comprise a cavity of 40 million m3. Al- though thin seams (0.2 to 0.3 m) and steep to semi-steep veins (60 - 70 degrees on average) were extracted using the method of overhand cut-and-fill there were also deposit sections with larger thicknesses and poor ore zones, respectively, where especially after the war until about 1955 large openings were formed due to missing filling. Due to this uncontrolled, relatively "wild" mining considerable subsidence of the surface and fractures in the border zone of the subsidence area occurred. The town of Oberschlema was destroyed and an area of 0.14 km2 was damaged by mining involving a maximum subsidence of 6 m in the centre - called deformation area. The rehabilitation work for the deposit area of Schlemal Alberode involves the flooding of the openings up to a level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle as long-term preventive measure. Fig. 1 shows the flooding level of October 1996. The level of the -540 m drift will probably be reached in June 1997. From that point of time a general rearrangement of the ventilation has to be made because the central return air ventilation via shaft 373 will no longer be possible. This shaft has no connection with the superficia1 system of mine openings. A new return air ventilation system based on shaft 382 as return air shaft will be designed (Fig. 1). The capacity of the future mine fan system will e.g. be determined by the flow conditions in the deformation area mentioned above. For this reason investigations were carried out in a test drift 13a on the level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle in the stretching zone of the subsidence trough for several days (Fig. 2 and 3). INFLUENCE OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE MAIN MINE FAN ON THE RADIATION SITUATION ON SURFACE The beginning of flooding in 1991 was also the beginning of the investigations into the options of future ventilation due to the reduction of the mining area. The first analyses of radon emanation made in May 1991 showed that only about 20 % of the total radon emanation result from systematically ventilated mine workings. This means that despite of existing dams the air streams through the majority of mine openings of the deposit. The analysis of the individual radon inflows illustrates the special problematic nature of the deposit involving all possible effects on the surface. The shutdown of the main mine fan over the long period between 2.10. and 6.10.1991 showed the essential influence of the operating conditions of the fans on the whole radiation situation on surface. Fig. 4 shows the comparison of the radon concentration level and its daughters during a 'normal" weekend with the level during long-term shutdown in the old 'Casino" of the papermill of Niederschlema. This papermill as well as the 'Casino" are situated in the outcropping zone of the deposit section of Niederschlema. The -60 m level was driven as the upper level in this area, from which the panels were driven to about 20 m below the surface. Also below the "Casino" there is such a panel in the vein 'Glirck", whose roof is directly situated below the building in a depth of 39 m. Directly next to it there is the raise 2 of the panel 'Namenlos" in a depth of 27 m. The graphics clearly shows the immediate increase in radon concentration as well as in the daughter concentration after the shutdown of the fans. The elimination of the artificially generated negative pressure results in the reversal of the convection direction due to the natural ventilating pressure. The interface structure allows the mine airto pass through aero- dynamic connections to the surface. Neglecting the meteorological parameters the concentrations of radon and its daughters in- creased by about 350 % as compared to a 'normal" weekend during longterm shutdown (i.e. in 4 days). This paper describes Cananea's successful implementation of the world's first mobile high angle conveyor (MHAC™) to achieve multiple-lift stacking of their primary crushed (2,500 mtph) low-grade ore. The mobile high angle conveyor answered Cananea's needs to stack a second lift, 30-meter high, on their Quebalix I pad. The mobile high angle conveyor is a custom unit that was designed by Terra Nova Technologies (TNT) in conjunction with Continental Conveyor and Equipment Company (CCE's 100th HAC). The stacking system expansion project also includes a rail mounted tripper on the existing overland conveyor and a custom designed "corridor conveyor" to build the corridor for the upper mobile HAC tracks and tail of the existing mobile stacking conveyor. Mexicana de Cananea, part of Grupo Mexico, is a large copper producer in Sonora Mexico and has been in operation continuously for over 100 years.

A process has been developed for increasing the grade of chalcopyrite concentrates from about 25 percent copper to about 60 percent copper. The concentrates are treated with two steps of autoclaving and then by flotation. Because of the lower associated weight, copper in the concentrates could be shipped and smelted at less cost than untreated concentrates. Use of the process can also increase overall yield from an orebody if a lower grade concentrate is sent to enrichment than would be sent to a smelter. Potential applications of the process would be for treating concentrates that must be transported a long distance for smelting or for treating concentrates so as to increase the capacity of a smelter.

World demand for phosphate fertilizers has grown at an average annual rate of between 6 and 7 per cent over the past 10 years. In the next five years world demand is expected to at least continue to grow at that rate. Also, the continued need for improved fertilizer materials, coupled with improvements in fertilizer technology, have placed added importance on the use of phosphoric acid as a starting material for high analysis phosphate fertilizers. This demand for phosphates and phosphoric acid must be met by increased production. Increased phosphoric acid production also brings increased demand for chemical processing agents including foam control agents. We at Arizona Chemical Company have closely followed the phosphate fertilizer industries needs. Arizona Chemical Company has been an important supplier of flotation agents to the phosphate industry, primarily from its Panama City, Florida plant. We have also recognized the important role played by foam control agents in the wet-phosphoric acid manufacturing process. We feel it is the responsibility of the supplier of foam control agents to offer specifically designed products that are highly efficient and economically useful. The difficulties involved in evaluating foam control agents in the plant are recognized. Owing to the large number of variables present, and the difficulties in controlling these variables during the period of a plant trial, plant evaluation of a large number of foam control agents is impractical. We have attempted to develop a practical, reproducible, and yet rapid, laboratory evaluation test which correlates with plant performance.

"In this study, the TBM Resistivity Prediction (TRP) system is developed for predicting the location, thickness, permittivity ratio and electrical conductivity of anomalous zones ahead of tunnel face using the measured resistivity of the ground. The applicability of the developed system was verified by performing field tests at a construction site in which an EPB-shield TBM is used for tunnelling work. In the first field test, it was found that the rock around the tunnel face had the same resistivity and permittivity with the rock ahead of the tunnel face indicating no anomaly ahead of the tunnel face. In the second test, a stronger zone 5-m thick was predicted ahead of the tunnel face based on lower permittivity than that of the rock around the tunnel face. The ground condition assessed by the newly developed TRP system matched well with that either predicted from geophysical exploration or directly obtained from drilling boreholes or from daily observed muck conditions. INTRODUCTION During tunneling work, the emergence of unpredicted zones of relatively weaker or stronger ground can lead to delays in construction work or an increase of construction cost. Predicting anomalous zones ahead of tunnel face in advance can thus prevent time and economic loss. For these reasons, various methods to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been studied and developed. Prediction methods using various kinds of equipment include tunnel seismic prediction, ground penetrating radar, electromagnetic surveys based on electronic antennas, and electrical resistivity surveys conducted by analyzing electric currents in the ground ahead of the tunnel face (Ryu et al. 2008). However, most of the prediction methods are only applicable to conventional tunneling job sites, which feature free access to the tunnel face. In mechanized tunneling projects, accessibility to the tunnel face is very limited because the tunnel face is occupied by the TBM."

The SIMAN (SIMulation ANalysis) computer language is a general-purpose, discrete-continuous simulation language for modeling a variety of multi-component systems. The language has been described by its author in a textbook (Pegden, 1985) and in a paper (Pegden, 1986) and is available in a mainframe version, a minicomputer version and a microcomputer version. The language was designed for and has been extensively used for modeling manufacturing systems but possesses many features that are advantageous in the modeling of mining materials handling systems. Consequently, the authors have applied the language to the simulation of an open pit shovel/truck operation to test its usefulness for simulating mine materials handling systems. This paper presents a short background on simulation languages, the capabilities and modeling framework of the SIMAN language, a description of the application of SIMAN to a shovel-track operation and some results and conclusions on the use of the language for mining materials handling systems.

A joint research program between the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines and Cyprus-Yampa Valley Coal Company is being conducted at the Foidel Creek Mine, Oak Creek, Colorado. This program goal is to study the effects of state-of-the-art, high-speed, automated longwall mining on health and safety, and primarily, ground stability under various geological conditions. The Bureau installed an automated data monitoring system, known as the Ground Control Management System (GCMS), to monitor in real-time the effect of rapid mining on pillar and face loading, stress redistribution in and around the longwall panel, and caving characteristics of the roof. The Bureau's GCMS, combined with the company's existing monitoring systems, which include environmental monitoring, a computer programmable conveyor belt system, and gamma ray roof control thickness indicators, has been effectively used to improve safety at the face, increase productivity, and reduce production costs.

Today the world looks on longwall in the hope that it can produce the next really big break through in productivity, Three correlated machinery developments have made this possible, but it is not only the machinery developments, interesting though these be in themselves, but together with developments in control systems of these machines that longwall now looks so much more attractive, The machinery concerned is, of courses:- 1. The Anderton Shearer Loader - A miner that takes a narrow strip off the, face at rates acceptable to modern mining engineers. 2. An Armoured Flexible, Conveyor which can be kept in close contact with the face and still convey coal as it is snaked over to the faces 3. Powered support systems which can be mechanised and controlled with reliability at any distance from the individual support itself.

Induced seismicity is deeply related to various engineering projects entailing anthropogenic in-situ stress change in deep underground. Hence, there is a persistent demand for estimating and mitigating the risk. Significant efforts have been made in simulating induced seismicity with a variety of numerical simulation techniques; however, there are still discrepancies between characteristics of induced seismicity numerically simulated and observed in the field. One of such discrepancies is the simulation of triggered seismicity defined as seismic events caused by an infinitesimal amount of anthropogenic stress change, which is frequently observed in geological structures. The present study aims to develop a methodology to simulate triggered seismicity whilst reproducing a complex stress state in a fault zone. For the purpose, a discrete fracture network within a fault damage zone is first generated. Then, an equivalent continuum model, in which each zone has a different anisotropic compliance tensor, is constructed by employing the crack tensor theory. A fault core is simulated at the center of the model with interface elements. Using the equivalent continuum model, an initial stress condition is simulated with the boundary traction method, which results in a very complex stress state with stress anomalies due to the stiffness anisotropy and heterogeneity. Subsequently, the effective normal stress on the fault plane is decreased in a stepwise manner to induce slip. The result demonstrated that many seismic events are induced on the fault plane with a slight decrease in the confining stress, thus being regarded as triggered seismic event. Further analysis on this seismic activity shows that the magnitude of triggered seismic events is inconsistent with the amount of shear stress drop, implying that a relatively small triggered seismic event could produce a large stress drop, generating locally intense ground motions and thus inducing severe damage to the nearby rock mass.

Two recently published papers describing the use of psychological tests for selection and placement of coal mine personnel have created considerable interest within the Coal Industry, one paper, published in the April 1957 "Mining Congress Journal," entitled "Personnel Evaluation and Training," discusses the use of tests by the Christopher Coal Company, The second paper, published in the "West -Virginia Coal Mining Institute's 1957 Report" and in the September 1957 "Coal Age," entitled "Testing to Select Better Personnel for Coal Mining Today," outlines Hanna Coal Company's test and selection procedures. Since these rather detailed sources are readily available, and to avoid repetition of the material in them, we will confine this paper to a very brief review of the essential steps already taken by these companies and a more extensive look at newer material. Briefly, the Personnel Managers, Mr. Harold L, Durrett and Mr. Albert M,. Rowe, of the Hanna Coal Company and Christopher Coal Company, in conjunction with Dr. Quin F, Curtis, Head of the Psychology Department of West Virginia University, developed two different groups oftests for coal mine personnel, The first group oftests was designed to assist in the selection of supervisors. These tests of the supervisory group were "The California Short Form Test of Mental Maturity - Advanced Series," which gave an I.Q. rating, and the second test is known as "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory," which measures several personality characteristics, These tests must be given, grade, and interpreted by a person trained in psychological testing. As a result of testing all of Christopher's supervisory employees (seventy in number) by this method, and then comparing the individual results with the individual ratings of the foremen on the job, a so-called foremen's scale was developed. If this resulting foremen's scale had been used to select the foremen who were rated as, the best men in on-the-job performance, it would have correctly identified seventy-four percent of that group.

A mobile-modular carbon adsorption mill design and operation for small to medium sized heap leach precious metal mines is presented. In the mobile-modular strategy, charcoal columns with adsorbed metal move from small strategically located carbon adsorption loading stations to a central stripping facility and back. The design has many advantages: 1) It scales-up from pilot plant to full production. 2) It has low capital requirements. 3) Operational costs are competitive with other systems. 4) Mill production can react quickly to changes in ore grade or property area. 5) The solution circuits are simple and easy to maintain. 6) Charcoal damage is reduced.

Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for predicting, the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface movement data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data collected could not provide more information other than surface movement. In this paper, the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements and calculated surface deformation are discussed. Techniques for improving the accuracy of the calculated deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, and curvature) are developed. The proposed techniques include: (1) proper selection of monument spacing for subsidence monitoring; (2) a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and (3) a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data.

The scrutiny given to model predictions of pit-lake water quality has focused attention on the uncertainty associated with long-term predictions. Although comparison of probabilistic predictive modeling of water quality in existing pit lakes indicates that short-term predictions can bracket most parameters, uncertainties in wall-rock reactions and the stability of groundwater composition and climate remain unquantified. This overview of the uncertainties associated with longer-term predictions is presented as support for those considering policy decisions that must be made in the absence of reliable estimates of future conditions.

Synthetic gypsum is the calcium sulfate co-product of a number of industrial processes. Synthetic gypsum utilization as an alternative to the naturally occurring mineral continues to grow in the gypsum industry. In particular, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) gypsum produced by the electrical utility industry has had a significant impact and a far-reaching effect on the gypsum wallboard manufacturing industry. This paper will discuss the various synthetic gypsum sources verses natural gypsum and highlight issues of use in gypsum wallboard and related products.

Introduction The availability of a thorough, simple-to-use roof fall classification system is desirable for several reasons. First, such a system would expedite the reporting of falls for the purposes of estimating material removal costs, analyzing damage levels, and complying with federal regulations to report falls in certain areas of the mine. Second, the classification system would allow the mining engineer to record falls routinely with little time and effort expended. This would encourage him to make observations concerning what type of roof support would work best in a given situation. Third, and probably most important, an adequate roof fall classification system is the first step toward developing a means of predicting the occurrence and extent of future falls. It was with these three reasons in mind that the following classification system was developed. The type of classification chosen reflects the background of the developer and the intended purposes of the system. Hylbert has proposed a geologic-based classification which groups falls as to structural and compositional origin. The need for similar systems is noted by Cox and by Ferm and Melton. Each of these researchers is confronted with a situation requiring a relationship between local geology and roof fall occurrence. Such a relationship would allow the prediction of the relative frequency of falls from a knowledge of local geologic features. The current research is aimed at fulfilling somewhat different requirements, as noted above. Fall geometry has been chosen as the basis of the classification system so fall type can be reported independent of local geological, environmental, and tectonic conditions. Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.
