A resource of low grade good quality diamonds has been discovered through the Diamond Company NL-Moonstone Diamond Corp. Joint Venture. A limited bulk sample diamond test of two large kimberlite pipes on the Kelsey Lake Property, Colorado, has been completed. These kimberlite pipes have petrological and mineralogical indications of the presence of diamond. Small diamonds were recovered from surface samples. Drilling and trenching revealed both pipes were complexes of diatreme facies kimberlite. One pipe contains crater facies kimberlite as well. This is the first reported occurrence of crater facies kimberlite in the Province. Approximately 1000 tonnes of kimberlite rock was excavated and processed through a scrubber -HMS -Sortex -Grease Plant. Significant diamonds were recovered. The diamonds were generally of good color and clarity, with many being in the gem and near gem categories. Grades are considered low however. Additionally, a small potential resource of alluvial diamonds is present.

"The new tunnels of the Copenhagen ""Cityringen"" will be excavated, at Kongens Nytorv square, crossing over the existing M1 and M2 metro lines. After the crossing, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and adjacent masonry buildings, with a minimum tunnel cover of about 4.5 m. The tunnels have an internal diameter of 4.9m and are being excavated through earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines in mixed face.The Magasin du Nord estate is characterized by a very complex structure, with different blocks built in different times. An assessment of the condition of the building and its sensitivity to tunnellinginduced ground movements has been conducted through a fully coupled soil-structure interaction analysis; based on the results of this analysis, mitigation measures have been designed.INTRODUCTIONThe Copenhagen Metro Cityringen is expected to be running in July 2019 and will consist of two single tracks in a twin tunnels, each approximately 16 km in length, for transporting up to 243,000 passengers on an average work day. The Cityringen includes 17 underground stations with island platforms, 4 crossover facilities and 3 construction and ventilation shafts. The tunnels is being excavated using earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines and have an internal diameter of 4.90 m.The intersection with the existing M1 and M2 metro-line will take place at Kongens Nytorv and at Frederiksberg. According to the design alignment, in Kongens Nytorv the new tunnels will pass over the existing M1 and M2 ones; as a result of this, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and the adjacent masonry building hosting a Mc Donald’s with a minimum cover of about 4.5m.In the framework of Risk Assessment for sensitive buildings, the effects of tunneling-induced ground movements on the Estates ØS0437 (McDonald’s building), ØS0428 (Magasin du Nord) and ØS0004 (Hviids Vinstue) were evaluated. To achieve this goal a fully coupled soil-structure interaction has been considered and the entire excavation process has been reproduced in a 3D model where the abovementioned buildings have been modeled. In this way, a risk assessment analysis was performed evaluating directly the effects of the excavation in terms of settlements and variations of the internal forces as far as the excavation process proceeds. With today's high energy costs per million BTU's, far greater emphasis is placed on increasing thermodynamic efficiency in the use of energy. America has long since discarded its previous golden age of "low cost energy" in the past ten years. Energy costs are now a very significant percentage of operating expense in industrial operations. Public utilities have felt the same influences of increasing costs in energy for the generation of electricity. Not only has the input energy expense increased seriously, but as pointed out by Blackmore in a paper, fuel costs were 53.4% of the total operating costs for American Electric Power Company.

Classical apparatus for granulometric separation generally have limited applications which are found either in the level of the size of separation or in that of the accuracy and the efficiency of the separation or in that of the rate of feed. In industrial practice, the classification of the products of coarse dimensions generally poses no problems. On the contrary, the separation of fine particles presents some difficulties, however the apparatus is used (mechanical classifiers, curved screens and sieves, hydrocyclones, etc...). These difficulties are due to hprfections of separation, rather high cost prices, and sometimes large amounts of recycled materials.

Unlike coarse particles (40-50 µm), the fines (<10 µm) have low collision efficiencies with gas bubbles in flotation process. Among the alternative methods for recovering the fines are their aggregation with coarse particles (carrier flotation) and flocculation of the fines alone (shear-flocculation), prior to flotation. In any case, hydrophobic aggregation is the mechanism involved though the technique is known by different names in literature. This paper deals with theory and state-of-the-art of particle aggregation. To illustrate the dependence of aggregation on particle hydrophobicity, charge and, in turn, the sheer force, the results of quartz-DDACI and galena-xanthate systems are considered. In the flotation of complex ores selectivity is achieved by chemical control and aggregation of particles of the same species is analogous to that; however, more work is necessary on ores for a better understanding of the pulp chemical aspects from the view point of selectivity in aggregation. For a few ores, the results of earlier workers confirm improved recoveries of fines by aggregation prior to flotation.

Froth flotation has been shown to be an effective method for reducing Loss-on-Ignition (LOI) of ponded or landfilled fly ash. Reduction of LOI is required for many fly ashes, particularly those produced from low-No, burners, in order to meet ASTM requirements for use as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete. An additional ASTM requirement, fineness, is critical in determining end use applicability, and in many cases, classification of fly ash is necessary to produce an acceptable product. Hydraulic classification has been shown to be a simple, cost-effective method for classification of a variety of minerals including silica, phosphate, mica, coal, etc. and has shown to be similarly effective on fly ash. The combination of froth flotation and hydraulic classification facilitate the production of a high quality pozzolan that meets or exceeds ASTM specifications. This combination has been rigorously evaluated and results of pilot-scale testing are presented. Pilot scale testing was conducted on fly ash from two active utility storage ponds and demonstrated that high quality, consistent pozzolan could be produced using APT&apos;s Fast Float? Technology. Along with the pozzolan, additional production of aggregate for masonry mortar and a low sulfur, medium Btu fuel were also demonstrated. The Fast Float? process incorporates several simple unit processes to ensure pozzolan consistency; classification controls particle size distribution which is critical to achieving early strength, flotation controls the grade with respect to L.O.I. (Loss on Ignition) while dewatering controls the moisture content.

On the basis of nonequilibrium zeta potential measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis, the sign of the surface charge of alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established. The results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory. This recent electrokinetic information coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in such soluble-salt flotation systems suggests that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. Experimental flotation results confirm this surface-charge/collector-colloid adsorption model and are presented herein.

Solvent Extraction (SX) technology has undergone significant refinements including outright process changes to achieve greater copper production rates with lower organic entrainment levels. LIGHTNIN has completed a detailed study aimed at improving on the conventional Holmes & Narver and Davy Power Gas type impeller designs1 by optimizing the mixing through the use of high efficiency pumper turbines instead of making system changes as others are doing. Since each individual installation requires a different design head and flow, LIGHTNIN has developed the R320 "family" of high efficiency, curved blade pumper turbines. These impellers are designed to maximize head and flow while reducing entrainment through lower power consumption, less shear generation and turbulence, elimination of air incorporation, production of the optimum droplet distribution, and lower tip speeds. These improvements also maintain the required mass transfer and copper recovery of the traditional impeller designs. The R320 impeller benefits have been quantified using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and proven in multiple domestic and foreign installations at flow rates exceeding 15,000 GPM. Design comparisons of this improved impeller type versus traditional technology impellers in head, flow, power and entrainment are presented for review. In addition, the inherent benefits of axial flow, high efficiency impellers like the A3 1 0 and A6000 in auxiliary mix chambers will be discussed. The high flow, low shear characteristics of these patented impellers provide the necessary dispersion stability for mass transfer while speeding phase disengagement in the settlers due to low power and low shear input.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure used by the authors for evaluating and designing soil liner systems. This method is particularly valuable in evaluating various treatment schemes for chemically amended soil liners. A tabulation of laboratory test results on various soil types are presented to quantify the effectiveness of certain treatments. A typical liner design program includes developing and proving soil borrow sources, designing the cross-section of the liner system, developing construction specifications, and providing construction services to ensure the intended product is achieved. Material Source Development The first step in designing a soil liner is to identify and evaluate suitable borrow sources within an economical haulage range. This is best done in a two step approach: a reconnaissance level investigation to identify target areas and a detailed evaluation of those targets. Reconnaissance: The goal of the preliminary investigation is to locate potential borrow sources for liner quality soils. This includes all natural materials which can be compacted, chemically treated, or otherwise amended to yield an installed permeability at or below some target value. This requires utilization of all available data sources: Soil Conservation Service, BLM, aerial photos, USGS geologic maps, and project geologist records. The goal at this stage is to locate shallow deposits of favorable soil types. The Unified Soil Classification System provides an excellent first pass grouping. Clays, clayey sands and silts are the most favorable soil types, although silty sands and occasionally clayey gravels can make excellent liners, and are often amenable to chemical modification. The lowest permeabilities are generally achieved with CH, CL and MH soils. Once preliminary targets have been identified using visual examination, laboratory classification tests should be performed to further refine the selection. Testing at this stage should include gradation, plasticity and hydrometer analyses. Additionally, "preg-rob" testing should be done as early as practical. Preg-rob is a phenomenon where gold or silver ions in solution associate with the clay, or other, minerals. When this occurs, a portion of the gold or silver leached from the ore is actually tied-up by the clay and thus a reduces recovery. Testing for this consists of agitating a small sample of the soil in a solution containing dissolved gold or silver, preferably of similar chemical make-up as the solution which will contact the actual liner. The solution and soil are assayed before and after agitation to determine loss to the clay. A reliable estimate of the hydraulic conductivity, commonly referred to as permeability, can be developed from the D10 value by the use of Hezen&apos;s formula: K = 100 (D1012 This relationship is limited to soils where the finer particles do not move due to the force of flowing water (i.e.: "hydrodynamic stabilitym)(1). Additionally, the effect of platty particles on permeability is not as predictable as the effect of equidimensional particles. D10 is the sieve opening size at which 10% of the material is finer. Plasticity is also important from several standpoints. Constructability is directly related to plasticity. Very plastic clays and non-plastic silts both tend to be difficult soils, while medium plastic clays and clayey sands are generally very desirable. Post construction performance is also related to plasticity (e.g. swelling, shrinkage cracking, frost heave, etc.). Additionally, low plasticity silts and silty sands generally do not respond well to chemical amendment. Source Development: The result of the reconnaissance evaluation should be an estimate of the relative probability of developing a suitable borrow source within an economical haul distance. Of course, "economical distance" depends on the degree of handling and treatment the borrow material requires, as well as the cost of synthetic alternatives. The purpose of the detailed investigation is to prove out quantity and quality of material sources, and determine design parameters such as degree of compaction, mixing, treatment and thickness of liner. The emphasis of the testing program should be permeability and strength. Strength becomes increasingly important as the slope of the liner and the height of the heap increase. Introduction In the decades since silica gel was first identified in material exuding from cracked concrete, a great deal of research has been conducted regarding the chemical reactions between the alkalies found in portland cement and silica found in aggregates. The reaction is complex and one that is not yet completely predictable, especially from the point of view of developing specifications that are appropriate to all situations. This paper is not intended to be a rigorous review of the research findings but is an attempt to provide a simplified review of the mechanisms of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), so that one can better understand the implications of the specifications, test results and effects on structures. In addition, the contractual relationships between the aggregate supplier and one of their major clients, the concrete supplier, will be examined with regard to the ASR. ASR basics Silica. Silica (silicon oxide) may exist in naturally occurring aggregates in various forms and in combination with a number of other elements. When the silica is completely crystalline, such as in quartz, it is chemically and mechanically stable. Quartz silica is impermeable and reacts only on the surface of the crystal, where the silicon and oxygen bonds are broken. Because the surface area per unit volume of most quartz is low, the reactivity is also low. Completely amorphous (noncrystalline) silica is, on the other hand, more porous and very reactive. The less "crystalline" the silica is in the aggregate, the more reactive. Silica that has melted and cooled quickly without recrystallizing, creating a glassy material (such as in certain volcanic aggregates), has a very low state of crystallization and will be much more reactive in an alkaline solution. Crystalline silica that has been transformed by heat and pressure may have a large quantity of strain energy stored in the crystal lattice. The presence of this higher energy will make the silica more likely to react. The "strained quartz" found in many metamorphic aggregates means that these aggregates are potentially susceptible to deleterious alkali silica reactivity, although the rate of reaction is typically much slower than with aggregates composed of or containing glassy or amorphous silicas. Another problem may exist with aggregates in which the silica is primarily crystalline. In aggregates such as chert, in which the silica exists as very fine crystals (i.e., crypto- or microcrystalline), the very high surface energies between the crystals contribute to alkali sensitivity. Therefore, the potential reactivity of an aggregate is seen to be a function of both the degree of crystallization of the silica in the aggregate and the amount of energy stored in the crystal structure, whether due to a large quantity of microcrystalline silica, a high strain energy stored in the crystals or some combination of these factors. The surface area per unit volume of the reactive silica will also affect the rate of reaction, because a larger surface area of reactive silica will have more opportunity to react. Obviously, the reactivity of the aggregate is also affected by the silica content. However, in this case, the results are not quite so obvious. A discussion of the effect of silica content will be postponed until after a discussion of the contribution of the cement paste. Paste characteristics. Hydrated portland cement is a very alkaline material with a pore solution pH typically in excess of 12. The alkaline environment of moist concrete provides an ideal place for noncrystalline or cryptocrystalline silica to react. However, not all alkalies are equal in their effects. Calcium compounds react with glassy silica to form calcium silicate hydrate, commonly abbreviated C-S-H a poorly crystalline material that can occur in several forms and chemical compositions. C-S-H was at one time called tobermorite gel, because it was chemically similar to the naturally occurring crystalline mineral tobermorite and because it had a gel-like (noncrystalline) structure when viewed under an optical microscope. The formation of C-S-H is the basis for both portland cement hydration and reaction with, for example, fly ash. C-S-H is relatively stable. Although drying will cause some shrinkage and rewetting will cause some expansion, the volume stability of the C-S-H is very good compared to the volume stability of most alkali silica gels. Alkali silica gels with high sodium contents, for example, are nonstable compared to C-S-H.

Normal process development for pressure preoxidation treatment of refractory gold ores starts with laboratory batch autoclave tests, followed by operation of a continuous autoclave pilot plant for confirmation of the various process options. This scheme will generally provide good information showing the effects of such variables as grind size, time, and temperature, and will indicate whether autoclave preoxidation will produce solids that are amenable to cyanidation for gold recovery. However, several recent test programs conducted over the last three to four years have shown that the cyanide leaching responses of treated solids from the batch tests can differ considerably from those achieved by the continuous pilot plant autoclave. Examples are provided to demonstrate these differences and to show the importance of extending the laboratory investigations to include the use of a semicontinuous autoclave test procedure. A test case is cited in which this procedure provided data that could not be obtained from batch tests.

Viewed abstractly, a mill may be defined as a mineral processing facility located somewhere between the mine and the tailings storage area, Just how mining operations and the demands of tailings storage affect mill design is, the subject of this paper. At the outset, it will be readily acknowledged that no two installations can, or ever will be the same. At one extreme is the bucket line dredge where the distance between the ?mine? and the tailings area is measured in terms of tens of feet. At the other extreme, the large open pit copper mines are frequently spread across twenty, miles or so of countryside with the ore moving to the mill, as exemplified by the operations at Bingham Canyon, Ray, or Ruth - the "upstream" counterparts of Garfield, Hayden and McGill. In each of these cases, mill location was largely determined by requirements for tailings storage and/or water supply.

Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

Stabilizing fine coal refuse ponds for reclamation at Monterey Coal Company&apos;s No. 1 Mine has been difficult. Entrained water in the stored refuse causes liquefaction as reclamation caps are placed, resulting in additional material requirements than originally projected to stabilize the pond surface. Laboratory results indicate that in-place refuse densities may be substantially improved at No. I Mine by converting from a single-point to a managed slurry distribution system. Increased densities result in improved storage efficiency, less entrained moisture and a more stable refuse mass, thereby providing an improved working surface for reclamation and improved post-closure cover stability.

Adsorption of nonionic/anionic surfactant mixtures on kaolinite has been studied with sodium dodecylsulfate as the anionic surfactant and octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecylether as the nonionic surfactant. Synergistic interaction between these surfactant was found to cause adsorption of the nonionic surfactant with its hydrophilic chains protruding into the bulk, leading to substantial changes in wettability and dispersion characteristics of kaolinite. Similarly, hydrophobicity changes are observed also for silica particles upon adsorption of nonionic ethoxylated alcohols owing to possible changes in the orientation of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface.

The heavy media process is now being used extensively throughout the world for the gravity concentration of a great number of different minerals. The process is a commercial adaptation of the heavy liquid procedure which has been used in laboratories for many years to separate mineral of different specific gravities. In the heavy media process, a suspension of finely divided particles in water is used to increase the apparent specific weight of the fluid to the desired separating point. The original heavy media process used sand, galena, pyrite and occasionally other materials as the solid constituent of the separating suspensions. As the process developed, the need for a more universal media meeting the following requirements was recognized: 1. High specific gravity. 2. Resistance to abrasion. 3. Resistance to corrosion, 4. Readily reduced to a suitable size consist for suspension in water. 5. Available in quantity at economical price levels. 6. Easy to recover by a simple method.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels at Cyprus Sierrita. The predictive program was initiated by Cyprus Sierrita and P&H Mining Equipment at the Cyprus Sierrita Mine in Tucson, Arizona during August of 1996 on the P&H model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

Daily everyone depends on the great variety of glass products, so much so that glass is often taken for granted. In fact most people do not realize how versatile glass has become. Consider the various uses and then try to imagine a day in which we are not influenced by glass. Common uses include container ware, table ware, window glass, lead crystal, automobile glass, and fiber glass. Several less common, but important, uses include laboratory ware, pharmaceutical, TV bulbs, light bulbs, glass ceramics, optical glass, fiber optics, and laser glass. Corning, Inc., a leader in specialty products, uses nearly 1 000 different compositions to manufacture about 60 000 different products (Edwards and Copley, 1977). Glass is such a complex product that-definitions vary and exceptions can be found for most definitions. Glass is an inorganic amorphous (non-crystalline) solid. Most glasses are produced by melting of a mixture of oxide raw materials, and then cooled to room temperature. Soda-lime-silica composition.s account for about 90% of all glasses melted (Anon, 1973). The properties of the glass product come mainly from its chemical composition. All of the different glasses require melting a combination of raw materials and forming the molten material into the desired shape. Both the melting and the forming processes use sophisticated technology and these technologies require experts to manage these production systems. The manufacturing process is continuous and takes place in tonnage quantities, so adjustments in the batch to achieve the desired finished product requires a great deal of expertise. Raw materials are fed to the batch mixing area in very large quantities (tons in most cases). As a result, impurities in the range of 0.1% result in addition of that impurity within the molten glass in kilogram amounts. More than twenty different industrial minerals are consumed in the manufacture of various kinds of glass (O&apos;Driscoll, 1990). This chapter describes the major and minor ingredients of the various glass batches. It discusses the roles of the various oxides in the glass batch and most importantly considers the mineral raw materials which supply the glass industry. Each of the raw materials is described in detail in other chapters so the geology and mineralogy sections are kept brief here. Container glass, by far, accounts for the most production; followed by flat glass, fiber glass, and specialty glass of which table ware accounts for the greatest tonnage. [Table 1] shows the general production data for 1987 through 1990. Statistics for many of the uses do not appear because production volumes are small compared to the major uses. The glass industry is organized in four categories: containers, flat glass, fiber glass and specialty glass. The US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, publishes production data about the glass industry in three different categories: 1) glass containers, 2) consumer, scientific, technical and industrial glassware, and 3) flat glass. The Bureau has very complete statistics about the glass industry in these three categories but they report production data in different units according to industry standards. Therefore, [Table 1] gives the production data in dissimilar units. The production of most glass articles follows similar steps. The raw materials are mixed and the resulting batch is fed into the furnace. In soda-lime-silica glasses melting begins between 600 and 900°C. At these temperatures CO, and other gasses are released which create bubbles in the molten glass. To remove the bubbles and insure complete melting the temperature is raised to between 1 500 and 1 600°C. This is the melting-refining stage during which the refining agents in the glass batch serve to aid in the release of gas bubbles, homogenize the melt, and prevent the formation of scum on the surface of the molten liquid. At the conclusion of the melting-refining stage the glass is too fluid for working and the melt is cooled to about 1 100°C to attain the proper viscosity for working and forming to begin. After the glass article has been made, it must undergo annealing (slowly and uniformly reheated and cooled) to remove thermal stresses that were created during the forming process.

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers.
