Current coal cleaning technology uses heavy media (HM) for the recovery of coal in particles larger than 1/16 of an inch. Through the use of float sink measurements of the feed and products to commercial HM unit operations, a selection function, sometimes called Tromp curve in the coal industry, can be computed. Since the selection function is a plot f the probability of a particle appearing in the float versus the particle density, the slope of the curve will be sharper at the point where the particle has a 50% chance f appearing in the float. Thus, the separation will be better. Fine-tuning a unit operation or a circuit of unit operations requires that the selection function be accurately known. By current practice, it is difficult to obtain an accurate measure of the slope because, when the selection function is plotted versus density, the data forms an S-shaped curve which lacks data points near the 505 point of the curve. This lack of sensitivity in measuring the slope means that small recovery improvements cannot be detected; thus, only large improvements are measurable. Since most engineering improvements are small when individually considered, but large when aggregated ever many small improvements, this lack of measurement sensitivity rules out the slew march toward improved efficiency. This paper presents a method of analyzing heavy media selection functions resulting in a far more effective measure of the selective function slope. Furthermore, this improved method is applied to a number of industrial coal cleaning plants for both heavy media and heavy media cyclones. Using the work of Hudy (1968), and Deurbrouck and Hudy (1972), selection functions for individual unit operations in each plant are calculated as a function f particle size as well as density.

During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

The logic and importance of marketing in the industrial minerals industry is generally recognized by those of us intimately involved in this industry. The illogical instances where marketing is ignored in evaluating projects or poorly implemented in operations are also well known. The interplay between these two extremes is interesting territory and is explored commencing with a logical progression of a metal mine that became an industrial minerals mine and ending with the most illogical and failure-prone decision common to the minerals industry today. This paper will demonstrate how: 1. A logical progression of marketing expertise can result in previously unseen benefits to a minerals venture. 2. Logic can turn to illogic due to market conditions and price fluctuations. 3. How operations can turn marketing logic into illogical results. 4. Short term "logic" is often illogical.

The federal Office of Surface Mining (OSW) has undertaken an effort to revise many of their permanent program regulations. Numerous procedures for compliance are being rewritten to allow for greater flexibility while meeting the requirements of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. This study investigates, for certain select provisions, the cost differential between complying with the original OSM standards and the more flexible, state-specific standards being allowed in many of the revised regulations. Estimated cost savings that could be realized under a few of the revised regulations are substantial and should provide a basis for seeking revisions to the state regulatory programs.

Newmont Mining Corp. has been producing gold from the Carlin Trend for more than 45 years. Naturally, the focus, scale and complexity of the operations have changed considerably during this time. Newmont discovered and developed the Carlin Main orebody that is located about 32 km (20 miles) north of Carlin, NV. The property was developed as a one-mine, one-gold mill treatment plant operation, which produced about 6.2 t/a (200,000 oz/year) of doré gold bars. The initial mine, mill and gold refining facilities were relatively small in comparison to today?s standards. The milling circuit used the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process to recover dissolved gold and prepare a concentrated precious metal ?precipitate? to be melted into a doré bar for sale.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) remains a health concern in many underground metal/nonmetal mines, and has been regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002. While the NIOSH 5040 standard method for DPM monitoring is required to demonstrate regulatory compliance, the FLIR Airtec DPM Monitor can serve as complementary engineering tool. It is a handheld instrument that offers near real-time measurements. As part of an ongoing field study, the Airtec has been used to survey elemental carbon concentrations (a proxy for DPM) in an underground stone mine. Via “spot-checking” and more prolonged area monitoring, this effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variation in several key locations. INTRODUCTION Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It is largely made up of elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC, respectively), which can be measured as proxies for estimating mass concentrations of DPM. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) considers DPM to be a health hazard and potential carcinogen [1]. It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition, and retention in lung tissue [2]. Since DPM exists in both the micro- and nano-particulate ranges, it can surpass typical auto-immuno defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system [2]. Relative to other occupations, the DPM exposure potential for underground miners is high because these individuals work in enclosed environments where diesel powered equipment is frequently used [3,4]. A variety of engineering and administrative controls have been devised to reduce DPM exposures in underground mines, and increased airflow is often a key component of control strategies. In large-opening mines, which are most common in the metal/nonmetal sector, DPM abatement via increased ventilation can be especially complex due to moving and controlling the large air quantities [5]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has regulated DPM exposure in metal/nonmetal mines since 2002. The final rule limits personal exposure to total carbon (TC, which is the sum of EC and OC) to an eight-hour time weighted average (TWA) of 160 µg/m3. To demonstrate compliance, operators must use the NIOSH 5040 Method [6]. However, the Airtec DPM Monitor (FLIR Systems, Inc., Nashua, NH) was developed as an engineering tool to provide near real-time measurements of both EC and TC for tracking personal exposures [7]. The portable Airtec works by capturing DPM on a filter and successively measuring laser extinction on the filter as DPM accumulates; the EC fraction of the DPM is dark, and so as it accumulates the filter becomes darker and absorbs more laser light [8]. The laser extinction value is directly correlated to EC, but since EC and TC are generally observed in consistent proportions (i.e., TC = EC*1.3), the Airtec is also programmed to display TC as a TWA [9]. There have been multiple studies conducted to validate the Airtec and the instrument has been adopted by some mine operators as a tool for their health and safety programs [3,8]."

The same circumstances and the same human behavior that produced accidents in the past tend to produce accidents in the present and the future. The ability to predict accident occurence in the future by projecting from the past is a statistical process. In a bookmaker's jargon this means "playing the odds" or "the percentages". A horse or a sports team may be beaten on any given day, but by skillfully assessing the factors of past performance and assigning odds, many clever bettors make money in the long run.

There is a saying, the greater the gratitude, the shorter the speech. That puts me in a quandary, because while I am grateful for the honor you do me today, I also want to talk about a subject very important to all of us. A few months ago, when I was asked to submit a title for my talk, I chose "Quality where it counts." I did so because perhaps the most important thing we at Amax did in our restructuring was to commit to quality in all our businesses - quality people, assets, and operations. Together, they create quality performance, which produces quality growth and increased shareholder value - our prime corporate mission. We are dedicated to quality. At Amax, quality means everything. Today, I want to discuss quality in another context - the need for it in American education and what we have to do to achieve it. If we ignore this need, we will all suffer the consequences. And they will be upon us far sooner than the next century, barely a decade away. I think almost everyone in this room works for an organization that had to restructure in the 1980s. Mining companies that did not, just didn't make it. Well, we did. As an industry, we are seeing improved profits, positive cash flow, and a more competitive position in the world marketplace. But all the restructuring we have done, all the hard work, and all the pain that was part of it, will be in vain if, down the road, we do not have the educated people we need as workers. We need them to design, manufacture, and market the products that use the basic materials produced by the mining industry. Simply put, we are at a crisis point in education today. That is no new revelation. Nearly six years ago, the National Committee on Excellence in Education published its report, "A Nation At Risk." Since then, things have not gotten better. The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, US News & World Report, and Fortune have all recently published stories about the sorry state of education in the United States. The subject has become the topic of TV talk shows as well as national commissions, and for good reason. The pool of young people entering the US labor force is dwindling. In the next decade, 10 million fewer will enter the job market compared to the 1970s. But fewer of them will be qualified to do the jobs available to them. Here's why: • 20% of today's high school students drop out before they are 18 and another 20% graduate functionally illiterate; 40% of today's fourth graders think the world is flat; • 20% of today's sixth graders cannot locate the United States on a world map; • one of every three ninth graders cannot figure the change for a two-item meal - and I'm talking about a Big Mac and fries. These are not just problems of minority kids in big city ghettos. Fully 40% of all young working Americans cannot add up their lunch bill. Three out of every five college freshmen need some kind of remedial work. These statistics are frightening. Particularly so because, while the work force is becoming less qualified and our public education system is getting worse, our products and technologies are becoming more complex. We are approaching a time when we will have machines that recognize handwriting but people who cannot write. We will have technology to take voice commands, but people who do not know what they are talking about. The accelerating pace of technology is changing the nature of the job market. The fastest growing jobs now, and in the years ahead, are in professional, technical, and sales positions requiring the highest education and skill levels. Most of these jobs will require the use of a computer. Yet, 95% of today's graduating high school students have never laid a finger on a computer keyboard. While our education system is failing the students it is supposed to serve, other countries are doing far better. In a

INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. The expanding: demand for ilmenite for use in the manufacture of titanium pigments, the knowledge that much of this raw material comes from distant points and therefore has to include a heavy freight charge in the price of the delivered product, and the further knowledge that ilmenite occurs both in the crystalline rocks of northern New Jersey and also in some of the Triassic igneous rocks, were considerations which led to a search for ilmenite-bearing sands in southern New Jersey. That this search was successful is now history, and it is the senior author's privilege to state here that most of the credit belongs to his associates who did all of the heavy work of hand-augering for samples, and who made all of the heavy-mineral separations. We all are grateful to members of the Department of Geology at Rutgers and Princeton Universities for the use of equipment which enabled us to evaluate certain samples from our ilmenite exploration program. In addition, we wish to express our appreciation to many companies for their cooperation and for their permission to publish mineral and chemical analyses. Williams Mine was considering spending a large amount of capital to install a pumping system underground to rid the mine of slimes; with the introduction of Delvo Stabilizer this challenge would be met. This paper will address the process to introducing the Delvo Technology into the Cemented Roddill Program. Some areas that were worked on included: testing of the mix design, bet dosage rate for an economical solution, temperatures at different levels of the mine, the amount of time needed once the grout was put to sleep, preventing plugs in the delivery system A controlled dosage that gave the Operator a 12 hour window of flowable material was developed and an added feature to the introduction of Delvo was also noted; an increase in MPa strength over the design. Collectively with the help of operators at the batch plant and the underground miners involved with the program all concerns where addressed and all goals met. A cost effective program was implemented thus increasing productivity, preventing costly plugs, and improved the actual maintenance on the entire delivery system, which included the batch tanks, aggitator tanks, all pumps required in the system and of course reducing buildup of slimes at the cones.

An underground mine fire can seriously threaten the lives of all personnel in the mine. This fact makes fire emergency planning a high priority in the mining industry. The optimum warning alarm must be fast and able to reach all miners, regardless of their location or work activity. Current means of fire warning are varied, and include such methods as stench, telephones, and word-of-mouth (messengers). Unfortunately, none of these methods are entirely satisfactory. A novel fire warning alarm which enables instantaneous warning of all underground personnel, the Canary Nine Messenger System, has been developed by VLF Magnetic Systems Inc. in conjunction with Noranda Technology Centre and the U.S. Department of the Interior - Bureau of Nines. The warning is sent by an electromagnetic signal which penetrates through mine rock to receivers housed in the battery packs which also power each miner's cap lamp. A loud buzzer in the integrated battery/receiver unit and the flashing of the cap lamp alerts miners to incoming messages. Testing of prototype equipment has demonstrated that the transmitted signal is capable of penetrating through over a mile of mine rock and activating the receiver. This report describes the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultra-low frequency electromagnetic transmission, and the design of recently available transmitter and receivers.

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill.
