This report presents data collected during research by the Bureau of Mines on corrosion of grinding media. Corrosion rates of eight alloys commonly used in grinding media were tested in synthetic mill water using an ultrasonic grinding device especially designed for this work. Electro-chemical measurements showed variations in corrosion rates for these alloys between 9.8 mpy for medium-carbon steels and 0.14 mpy for high chromium white irons. Bureau data are discussed along with data from the literature to indicate that corrosion causes less than 10 pct of the wear of grinding media in commercial grinding mills. A comparison of corrosion rates for various types of grinding media shows that alloying elements and electrochemically active inclusions in steel affect the corrosion behavior of the media.

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental degasification project in Island Creek Coal Co.'s Virginia Pocahontas No. 5 mine. Methane from the over- lying Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed was entering mine workings in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed through fractures in the roof rock. Small-diameter (1-5/8-inch) holes were drilled into the overlying coalbed to reduce the gas pressure and intercept methane flows, which were piped to the surface through an under- ground 6-inch-diam steel pipeline. The total methane flow rate from the vertical holes averaged 150,000 ft3/day for the first month. Methane flows into the mine were reduced by 47 pct, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of this form of degasification in reducing ventilation requirements and providing a safer working environment.

Seven degasification wells have been completed in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the new Emerald mine near Waynesburg, Pa. Funding was provided by the Bureau of Mines to perform stimulation treatments on five of the wells, to show that this is a feasible and economical means of degasifying part of a coalbed. The seven wells ranged in depth from 590 to 910 feet. Stimulation treatments used 25,260 to 42,660 gallons of foam and 7,400 to 12,800 pounds of 20/40-mesh prop sand. Pumping rates were 10.8 to 11.6 bbl/min and treating pressures were from 1,050 to 1,600 psig. On the day following stimulation, gas production ranged from a few hundred cubic feet per day to more than 100,000 cu ft/day.

Results of detailed analyses of four cores from the Threemile Canyon area in the P. R. Spring tar sand deposit in Utah are reported by the Bureau of Mines. The cores were obtained by the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Sur-vey as part of a l7-corehole evaluation program in the P. R. Spring, Hill Creek, and Rim Rock tar sand deposits. Average properties of the oil zone in the Threemile Canyon area as deter-mined from these cores are as follows: Oil saturation, 67.4 pet of pore volume; porosity, 29.2 pct; permeability before oil extraction, 133 millidarcies; and permeability after oil extraction, 2,855 millidarcies. Average net thickness of the oil zone is 23.8 ft and average depth to the top of the oil zone is 189 ft.

Three long horizontal holes were drilled from a directionally drilled surface hole at the Emerald Mine near Waynesburg, Pa. The purpose was to adapt the technique of directional drilling for use in draining methane from coalbeds. A 504-m (1,652-ft) long, 76-mm (3-in) diameter, circular arc pilot hole was drilled, using a downhole mud motor, to enter the Pittsburgh coalbed at a vertical depth of 305 m (1,000 ft). The hole was reamed to 222 mm (8-3/4 in) and was cased to a measured depth of 486 m (1,595 ft). Three 76-mm (3-in) diameter horizontal drainage holes were then drilled, totaling 2,909 m (9,544 ft) of horizontal hole. Improvements in drilling methods increased the average drilling rate from 20.4 ill (67 ft) to 64.9 m (213 ft) per day. The cost of drilling the directional and horizontal holes (using a Government-owned drill rig) was $1,169,530, a figure inflated by inexperience and by delays caused by lost-circulation problems and fishing operations. An estimated total drilling cost of $960,000 (including rental of a drill rig) for an improved system, was determined by a detailed cost analysis. Initial gas and water production from November 1979 through May 1980 was low because of caving of the horizontal holes drilled in shale near the bottom of the casing.

This Bureau of Mines study covers 25 underground mines that were active in the Upper and Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning coalbeds in 1976. The coal ranges from low to medium volatile in rank; its primary use is for steam generation. Seven mines emit more than 100,000 cfd of methane gas; those mines are the deepest and largest producers. The methane gas content of three core samples of the Lower Kittanning coalbed was estimated by the direct method. A sample from a depth of 320 feet contained 0.5 cu cm of gas per gram, at 620 feet there was 0.8 cu cm of gas per gram, and at 1,060 feet there was 11 cu cm of gas per gram. These results suggest that methane control problems will be encountered in the future as deeper coal is mined.

Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. New Continuous Personal Dust Monitors (CPDM) submitted to NIOSH for approval to sample coal mine dust must accurately measure respirable coal mine dust in mine environments. There are two steps in the process which may be done in any order. The manufacturer is required to submit the results of a comparative underground coal mine dust sampling study, where the candidate CPDM is compared to an approved coal mine dust sampling device (currently the Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampling Unit (CMDPSU)). This testing shall follow the guidelines outlined below and shall demonstrate through weighted regression analysis that the mean coefficient of variation with bias correction is equal to or less than 12.8%. The other step involves laboratory testing to determine the electronic and environmental stability. This testing must be conducted by a private, commercial, academic or other laboratory approved by NIOSH.

This report presents statistical data on individual plants in the fuel- briquet and packaged-fuel industries circularized by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in its 1957 annual survey. This survey revealed that 17 briquet and 23 packaged-fuel plants were active part or throughout the year. The annual production capacity of the fuel-briquet industry was 3,088,000 net tons, a decrease of 17 percent from 1956. The decline in capacity was caused in part by the permanent retirement of 4 plants and also by the reduction in capacities of 4 other plants. The rate of production of briquet plants also decreased as the industry operated at 35.8 percent of capacity compared with 40.9 percent in 1956. Every operating plant in 1957 had an annual capacity exceeding 25,000 tons.

The effects of the process variables on the production of chemical coke on a chain grate stoker, a type of traveling grate, were studied. Six bituminous coals, ranging in volatile matter from 16.7 to 43.8 percent, were successfully carbonized, yielding chemical coke with acceptable physical properties. The coke yields were dependent on the volatile-matter content of the coal. The air fuel ratio had the most marked effect on the yield and characteristics of the resultant coke, and the general furnace performance. Results can only be predicted; the actual yield and quality of coke obtained from any given coal can only be determined by actual tests using the optimum processing variables to obtain a coke with minimum volatile-matter content and to retain as much of the fixed carbon in the original coal as possible.

The 15,770-acre Worm Creek Roadless Study Area is in southeastern Idaho about 8 miles (mi) west of the northern portion of Bear Lake. U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel examined the roadless, area during the summer of 1984. No mineral resources were identified within the study area. There were no mines or mining claims in the study area in 1984. However, the study area is blanketed with oil and gas leases, but no known productive horizons have been identified within nor nearby. The roadless area is in the Cordilleran fold-thrust belt and is underlain by Paleozoic and Mesozoic marine strata more than 50,000 feet thick. The trace of the Paris thrust fault is 2 to 3 mi east of the study area and has an eastward displacement of about 4 to 7 mi.

The Bureau of Mines conducted preliminary investigations on the use of an acid-alcohol leaching technique for recovering phosphate values from phosphate matrices. H2S04 and methanol were used as the leaching agents. Starting-matrix particle size and acid-apatite ratio were found to significantly affect the efficiency of phosphate leaching. Phosphate extractions of more than 80 pct were obtained when minus 200-mesh ore was used and the acid-apatite ratio was 8:1 or more. The iron and aluminum oxide impurities (R203) present in the crude acid products were monitored, and R203-P205 ratios are reported. Phosphate extractions in excess of 80 pct also were obtained when phosphatic clay wastes were leached. Typically, leach slurries filtered using test leaf filters ex-hibited filtration rates of 100 lb/(h·ft2) or more.

The Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal lands in the State of Oregon and classified them in detail, section by section, according to their availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal status and agency management practices. The Bureau determined areas of the State having past mineral production and/or known metallic mineral resources and areas favorable for coal, oil, gas, and geothermal resources, and prepared maps that spatially compare the availability of Federal mineral land with these mineral areas to demonstrate the extent of restrictions to mineral entry. Oregon contains 62.1 million acres, of which 33.9 million acres or 55% is Federal mineral land. About 2.3 million acres of Federal land is favorable for selected metallic mineral deposits, of which 64% is available, 13% is restricted, and 23% is unavailable. Of the 21.1 million acres of Federal leasable land favorable for oil and gas, 68% is available, 11 % is restricted, and 21 % is unavailable. Of the 146,720 acres favorable for coal, approximately 71% is available, 13% is restricted, and 16% is unavailable. Federal leasable land favorable for geothermal resources amounts to 458,968 acres, of which 42% is available, 34% is restricted, and 24% is unavailable.

An experimental investigation was conducted to assay the relation between natural gas concentration and ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere . Both the gas concentration representing maximum ignitibility and the relationship between certain properties of the explosives and their incendivity are discussed . The data show that variation in the natural gas content in the gallery can have a highly significant effect on ignitibility of the gallery atmosphere ; maximum ignitibility of the atmosphere by permissible explosives occurs with approximately 8.1 percent natural gas . The study also shows that incendivity of a permissible explosive cannot be determined only by its detonation velocity , oxygen balance , or ballistic mortar strength . However , for similar type explosives , trends observed indicate that their incendivity increases with detonation velocity or bulk strength . Additionally , for underoxidized explosives studied here , the more negative the oxygen balance the less incendive was the explosive within a class defined by salt content .

During the present war emergency, under the urge of the Federal Government to store coal, the following questions are frequently asked by coal users: (a) Will the coal lose any, of its heating value in storage? (b) Will it slack and give a smaller-size coal? (c) Will its burning characteristics change in any way? (d) Will it catch fire from spontaneous combustion? (e) What precautions should be taken when coal is stored? DISCUSSION (a) Loss of Heating Value Studies by the Bureau of Mines show that the loss of heating value of coal in storage commonly has been overestimated. Various types of storage tests were made on New River, Pocahontas, Pittsburgh gas, and Sheridan (Wyo.) coals. A procedure for the spectrophotometric determination of uranium has been developed in support of minerals research being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Uranium is separated from the sample by tributylphosphate extraction from acid solution containing added aluminum nitrate and (ethylene dinitrilo)-tetraacetic acid solutions. The colored uranium-dibenzoy1methane complex is developed in the organic phase by adding an ethanol solution of dibenzoylmethane buffered with triethanolamine. Absorbance is measured at 410 nanometers, and the response is linear up to at least 100 micrograms U30S in the aqueous aliquot taken for analysis. Aliquots containing as little as 8 micrograms U30S may be analyzed with relative errors no greater than ±5 percent. For aliquots containing at least 35 micrograms U308, relative standard deviation at the 95-percent confidence level is about ±2.2 percent. Appropriate procedures are given for analyzing a wide variety of samples.
