Drilling operations are a vital component of surface mining, directly influencing productivity, safety, and cost efficiency. This paper explores a multi-faceted approach to drill optimization, focusing on minimizing delays, and enhancing operational effectiveness. Key areas of inefficiency such as shift changes, fuel and water delays, and time lost between drilling holes are analyzed to identify actionable improvements. Equipment related factors, including the frequency of drill bit and drill steel changes, as well as the condition of deck bushings, are evaluated for their impact on downtime and performance consistency. Additionally, the integration of smooth drives and shock subs is examined for their role in reducing vibration related wear and improving drilling precision. Optimization of pattern approach strategies is highlighted as a means to reduce non-productive movement and align drilling with blast design more effectively. To support continuous improvement and accountability, the implementation of a driller scorecard is proposed. This tool enables the measurement of individual performance based on key operational metrics, fostering a culture of data driven management. Through a combination of field data analysis and best practice recommendations, this study provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing drilling productivity in mining operations. The findings aim to support mine operators in achieving higher efficiency, reducing operational costs, and extending equipment life through targeted optimization strategies.

At the Yanacocha gold mine, in the Andes of northern Perú, the first instrumental tests were carried out in October 2019 to detect the initiation sequence of a production blast by detecting the EMF signal produced by the detonation from each blast hole in the sequence. Several experimental tests were carried out to choose the correct antenna and find the best setup of the high-speed Data Acquisition device (DAD) to detect these electromagnetic waves. Finally, the first measurement was obtained. With the instrument recording at a rate of 1 million samples per second, the initiation sequence was detected with 99.5% accuracy. It was found that it corresponded, without a doubt, to the designed scheme. The main result is that these tests provide us with a method and instrumentation to verify if the planned initiation sequence is carried out correctly in the field. In this way we can find operational deviations and detect possible misfires. This method has proven to be accurate, fast and easy to implement, mainly requiring an EMF signal capture equipment that can record at very high speed, something that is increasingly easier to satisfy with the development of microcontrollers. On the other hand, the type of antennas used in this method are low cost and very commercial. These tests have improved our understanding of the nature of detonation and have marked a new milestone in the development of blasting instrumentation in Peru.

The emission of particulate material is one of the several parameters related to environmental control in mining operations near communities. Blasting is an event that generates and leaves a large amount of dust in suspension, which can cause discomfort to communities, generating complaints that can compromise the operational continuity of the mine. The proper management of these environmental impacts is a key factor to ensure a good relationship with the neighborhoods, making a responsible mining in harmony with the environment, giving sustainability to the mining business in the medium and long term. The main goal of this work is to present different techniques and technologies applied in a large-scale open pit mine in Brazil, with operations close to a community, to minimize the emissions of particulate material into the atmosphere. For this, different technical solutions were implemented. First, a non-conventional blasting technique was introduced that incorporates special charging and timing configurations, generating a first upper layer that serves as a blanket to contain a second, higher-energy lower layer. An optimal stemming was also defined in order to minimize ejections and maximize cratering, using the scaled depth of burial theory as well as video and fragmentation analysis. In addition, changes were made in the timing between decks (to guarantee a minimum time between layers) and between holes (changing the initiation point opposite to the free face). Finally, additional measures such as humidification of the bench, use of a wind vane to identify wind direction and the construction of a physical barrier between the mine and the community were implemented as additional mitigation measures. By applying the above techniques together, in some specific zones of the mine, it was possible to considerably reduce the ejections generated by blasting versus conventional blasting without the above measures, which was demonstrated in the field with dual blasts trials. Additionally, it was possible to achieve a vibration reduction in the community of ~30%. This work demonstrates how, by applying these technical solutions, it was possible to minimize the dust and vibrations generated by blasting allowing this operation to do sustainable mining

This paper describes a lightning warning system (LWS) in operation at the U.S. Bureau of Mines' (USBM) Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) from December, 1989 to April, 1991. An electric field mill measured the DC atmospheric electrostatic field. Also, an economical on-line weather data service provided lightning location maps and other weather information. A system such as this can significantly improve the safety of explosive handling. The use of these two methods addresses the detection of thunderclouds building overhead and the prediction and tracking of developed storms. Warning reliability of the system was very good when data from both sources were considered. Experience showed, however, that use of either system alone would not provide adequate reliability in most situations. Some problems occurred with the field mill and there is some question whether the instrument is compatible with harsh mining environments or could be made portable. Another method ' of measuring electric field based on fiber optics is discussed. This technology may be able to overcome the problems with field mills.

Blast vibration records used in mining contain unwanted information in the form of noise due to long-period drifts, background noise, and noise due to the conversion of the analogue signal to a digital signal. When recorded signals from blasting are used to find other physical variables, such as going from particle velocity to acceleration or displacement, the additional information in the vibration signal can result in inaccuracies in the estimation of the peak values and more dramatically, the results in displacement or acceleration can be nonzero near the end of the record. There are different proposed methods to clean or filter the unwanted information from the signal. All of the methods are based on finding the best fit of the record average value (baseline) and then subtracting from the record under analysis to produce the desirable adjustment. Different criteria and functions are used to define the best fit. The function to use will depend on the shape of the record average values. The main characteristic of the baseline function is that it represents a low frequency wave. Such a low frequency wave can be a periodic function or a polynomial expression of nth order. According to the order of the polynomial expression, the baseline correction can be linear, parabolic or high order. In this document the detailed procedure and the results for the baseline correction of a blast vibration record using a periodic function and a polynomial expression of different order is presented. The results show that the drift problem when displacement is calculate using velocity records increases with the increase of the distance from the blast.

The article reviews the aspects which contribute to the quality of the results from a blast with explosives, namely a good floor, no large blocks, easy mucking, and explains the mechanisms of the blasting process which decide on the quality of these aspects for a given blast method, and how these mechanisms can be simulated from basic principles. It proposes that good fragmentation size distribution can also be important if the rock is going to a crusher, e. g. for the ore in a mine and for the rock excavated in a quarry.

Reactive ground is ground that undergoes a spontaneous exothermic reaction after it comes into contact with nitrates. This is commonly caused by inert rock hosting sulphide minerals, such as pyrites that act as the reagent. The presence and subsequent rate of reaction with nitrate based bulk explosives can be difficult to predict. Once identified, only explosives that are tested and proven to be compatible with the reactive ground may only be used. These typically take the form of inhibited ammonium nitrate emulsion blended with a limited volume of ANFO or porous prilled ammonium nitrate (PPAN) to ensure that all AN prills in the blend are wholly encapsulated and thus protected from the reactive ground. The requirement for high emulsion content bulk products limits the suite of products available for use to high energy, and high expense products. Further, if chemically sensitised products are used, charged holes must be left unstemmed to allow for gassing to occur, adding delay and exposing the blast crew to an unconfined charge in reactive ground. A range of inhibited products has been developed that are solid sensitised and can be bulked to as low as 0.9 g/cc (56.2 lb/ft3). The use of a solid sensitiser enables stemming to occur immediately after each hole is charged, confining any unplanned detonation more safely within the rock mass. The effective and precise manufacture of bulked inhibited products required a new and innovative Mobile Processing Unit (MPU) design. This MPU required the ability to blend two solid raw materials (AN prill & sensitiser) along with two liquid ingredients (AN emulsion and process fuel). This MPU has been designed, manufactured and has used successfully to manufacture low density inhibited explosives. This paper presents an innovative shift in inhibited bulk products with specific reference to their manufacture and application.

Trail blasters for the National Park Service (NPS) live and work in remote mountain terrain throughout the western states, where any support or resupply may be sporadic and ditlicult and mountain weather affects every activity. Mechanical “aids” are the pick, shovel, rock-bar, wheelbarrow, and a Pionjar or Cobra dritl. The blaster is usually faced with an extraordinary range of work, t?om delay blasts in weathered rock using driiole depths of 18” (46cm) to as little as 4” (1 Ocm), through reducing boulders and talus fields to useable tread, blasting stumps, snags and log-jams, to the explosive disintegration and casting of animal czcasses. One day he/she might provide a 500cf (14 cu meter) anchor excavation for a suspension bridge, the next day directionally fall 60” (1.5m) diameter snags in a camp area, and the following day blast a 3-foot-wide (1 meter) tread bench across a steep bedrock slope. To be effective, the blaster must design each and every blast around desired end result, crew and public safety, maximizing effective use of limited quantities of explosive, and the minimnation of environmental effects. Since almost all drillhole blasting occurs in the weathered zone of the rock, blasting is more the art than the science of judging rock density, hardness, cohesion and prefracturing, and selecting explosives, drill and delay patterns, and loading techniques responsive to those conditions. For these reasons the NPS issues its own Blaster’s License, with a basic requirement of at least 40 hours of NPS blaster training and 3 years of supervised Blaster in-Training experience. The focus of this pre-license requirement is on safety and using explosives as a precision tool, versus just “blowing things up”.

The DOE is evaluating Yucca Mountain, Nevada as a potential site for disposal of high level nuclear waste. Yucca Mountain is located approximately 160 km northwest of Las Vegas on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site and the Nellis Air Force Range. An exploratory tunnel has been constructed through Yucca Mountain for site characterization. A controlled drilling and blasting technique, smooth wall blasting, was used to excavate the TBM starter tunnel and alcoves off the main tunnel to provide areas for scientific investigation. Fundamental to the blasting program has been the use of two blast design equations used in concert to minimize blast damage to the surrounding rock mass. The first of these equations was developed by Roger Holmberg and estimates near-field peak particle velocity that is the basis for minimizing blast damage to the host rock. The second of these equations was developed by B. H. Sanden and provides bore hole pressure estimation which allows controls to minimize crushing of the rock mass along the perimeter yet allowing enough force to create tensile failure between perimeter bore holes. This is key to the smooth wall blasting technique. To date, essentially the same controlled drilling and blasting program has been in place for all excavation requiring controlled drilling and blasting at the ESF. The controlled drilling and blasting program uses an iterative process to achieve continuous improvement in the blast rounds. This involves interaction between Architect and Engineer (A/E), Constructor, and Testing Coordination O&e (TCO) to ensure each blast round successfully meets the expectations of affected participants. The A/E requested that the TCO provide validation of the near-field peak particle velocity estimation under the Construction Monitoring Program. Data gathered under this program were reduced by statistical analysis and used to verify blast design parameters and provide a site specific blast damage relationship.

The Industrialization of a country depends on its mining activities to a great extent. In mineral production, India has a top rank not only in South Asia, at the global level too. Quantum of mineral production is almost directly proportional to the quantum of explosive production. Mining sector consume more than 80% of country’s explosive production. Due to rapid growth of mining activities in the country, the explosives industry has been developing very fast in terms of quantity, quality and types. , In this paper, India’s post independent chronological date regarding use of explosives, their types, their constraints and a profile of well-known manufacturers has been meticulously presented. A production figure for three years with system analysis has been presented. The paper also deals with present consumption pattern while making a futuristic forecast. In view of the anticipated changes that are to take place in mining industries in near future, the manufacturers of explosives have to pay a vital role. The paper highlights some concrete and valuable suggestions and recommendations. Small scale Companies have to limit their production to Slurry and Emulsion types of Cartridged explosives whereas the large manufacturing units have to concentrate on Bulk explosives, specialized explosives and better initiating systems. The large manufacturing units have also to make all concerted efforts to compete with global market for significant export. The Country for its rapid growth needs basic raw materials like Coal, Iron Ore and Limestone. So, the extraction of these minerals is of prime importance. The more we produce and consume, the more will be Industrialization. The Industrial growth rate has been around 6% during the last few years. As the Industrial growth rate is moderate, there is moderate increase in mineral extraction in the Country. Additional mineral extraction demands additional explosive production (Annexure-1).

On Januarv 1, 1996, INCO Limited, Tamrock OY, Dyno Nobel and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of robotic mining equipment called the Mining Automation Program (MAP). This project was a tive- [5] year research and development program that combined the talents of the above organizations to facilitate the development of mining equipment and systems for tele-remote mining. The year 2000 brings MAP to conclusion with actual production process trial testing of the developed prototype equipment and systems during the period between May and October. MAP consisted of multiple projects all of which are based on the communication system developed by INCO Mines Research and currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main projects include the development of a positioning and navigation module (including a software mapping system that will be inherent to each piece of equipment), robotic systems for underground development and stoping operations, as well as software systems to support the use of this equipment. Included in the program was the establishment of a Research Mine, at INCO’s 175 orebody, Copper Cliff, Ontario, Canada. This facility allowed for the on-site collaboration between the companies and research organization in the design and testing of techniques and equipment to mine with TeleminingTM. Some of the prototype equipment developed through the program are: a tele-operated drilling jumbo, a tele-operated load-haul-and-dump [LHD] tram, a tele-operated production drill, a remote initiation system for programming and detonation of electronic detonators, and the development of a vatiable energy bulk emulsion explosive system, including loading equipment, to deliver the explosives to boreholes. Use of tele-operated and automated equipment for mining mandates a dramatic change in the traditional drill/blast/muck/support cycles in the underground mining process.

With the advent of any new technology comes the necessity of fully understanding the mechanics of that technology. The Shock Tunnel is one such technology that provides a cost effective means of simulating large-scale explosions while requiring a fraction of the explosive and space. Although the technique is known and practiced, the dynamics and mechanics of this technology has yet to be fully understood. A relationship between the energy potential of a given explosive and the energy realized at a set of distances was determined. This data was then compared to the energies realized from the same explosive when utilized in conjunction with a shock tunnel. A relationship between potential and realized energy outputs from explosive based shock tunnels exists and the understanding of this relationship would allow all for predictions to be made to forecast a specific amount of explosive required to produce a desired energy output. This energy output should then be relatable to peak pressures produced via the shock tunnel. Two shock tunnels are currently accessible for this study, the first under the direction of the University of Kentucky, and a second under the direction of the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The two shock tunnels differ in dimensions but share common construction materials. Energy realized from a shock tunnel is hypothesized to be a function of the shock tunnel’s dimensions. This study explores how different geometries affect the shock tunnel’s performance; this exploration is broken down into three phases. Phase 1: Open arena testing in which theoretical energies produced by the detonation of small (<1.0 kg) charges are compared to actual experimental values. Phase 2: Shock Tunnel testing in which realized energies are experimentally recorded for the UK shock tunnel. Phase 3: Analysis of the data to lay down the ground work for producing a pressure-forecasting tool given shock tunnel dimensions and explosive characteristics with the possible detection of avenues for optimization of shock tunnels.

The positive results have motivated further Peruvian mining companies to introduce the new technique."

Remote Avalanche Control Systems (RACS) which uses solid explosives has been used in Europe since 1996 and North America since 1999. With large destructive avalanches in transportation corridors, various States and Provinces have started implementing RACS into their summer construction projects to minimize traffic shutdowns. Since 2014 in North America, many of the projects are requiring the RACS deployment boxes to be removable by light duty helicopter for loading and summer storage. This is to further remove workers from the mountain tops, where inclement weather and Occupational Health and Safety concerns are widespread. We did not believe the method of flying primed charges under a helicopter was safe, so we developed a new charge container to deal with the issue.

The mining and oil industries employ techniques such as geologic mapping, core drilling and electromagnetic field techniques to explore for new deposits. New discoveries of major near-surface ore bodies are becoming progressively rare and traditional exploration methods are unable to resolve ore bodies deeper than about 500 m (1640.4 ft). Consequently high-resolution seismic reflection techniques show great potential for exploration to much greater depths down to almost 3 km (1.9 mi).

The vibration waves are produced by the detonation of the explosive charges of each blasthole, analyzing the vibration waves produced by each blasthole, allow us to determine the optimal time between the detonation of each blasthole to reduce the vibrations of the production shot. Once the optimal time is found, it is possible also, to predict the vibration of the production shot (considering times and sequences) using predictive models. The waveform recorded includes information regarding the particle velocity and the dominant frequencies of the vibration.

"CRACKS CONCERN CORPORATION" Was the headline on the front page of the Terre Haute Tribune Star, March 1994. Having spent several years following up on blast-induced damage allegations made this article especially interesting. Knowing that there were no operating mines within 30 miles of this newly built, yet to be occupied building, also made the reading more enjoyable. The article went on to read, "Vigo County school officials have asked architects to find out whether some cracks in walls at the new school are due to NORMAL settling or if they indicate serious structural problems." It is obvious that if there were a mine within "Feeling" distance, blasting and the operator would have immediately become suspect as at least one of the potential causes. More alarming is that the investigation may have stopped there.

The new technology presented in this paper is a patented system that is installed on board excavators (backhoe or front shovel types). Several control points are set along ore/waste contacts and their position is uploaded on the corresponding shovel. The operator proceeds on mucking until he is alerted when reaching any of the several control points previously located in the blast patterns and that have moved with the muckpile. A case study is presented at a high grade copper mine, were unique 3D shapes are showing as a result of using an on-board excavator dilution control system. Both ore-loss or dilution cost of opportunities are analyzed.

This paper describes the circuit simulations based on SPICE of the SDI Electronic Detonator System at the system level. SDI is launching the Electronic Detonator System with a robust serial protocol exhibiting great ease in field usability and deployment. Programmable delay time with increment of 1 ms up to 10s is possible. Bus length of up to 2 km containing 1600 detonators can be utilized. This system was analyzed using SPICE simulations and an Excel-based firing model spreadsheet. The effects of wire diameter, resistivity, detonator leakage characteristics, blasting array topology (lumped, linearly distributed or branched) were simulated using the firing model. Such spreadsheet is instrumental in determining the blasting topology of any given detonator number and bus wire diameter or resistivity. Initial simulation results were interactively coupled back into making the serial protocol more robust during typical mining conditions.

Secluential blasting is one of the most popular methods in blasting. tiowever, it is well known that an emulsion explosive can be dead-pressed by dynamic pressure generated by the previous detonation. It is difficult to gain the expected blasting performance due to tb.e malfunction of explosive caused by deadpressing and shock desensitization. Such malfunction of an explosive is undesirable for safety blasting operation. Voids in the emulsion explosives will considerably affect the performance of explosives such as sensitivity, detonation velocity (DV), pressure-resistance and so on. To clarify the detonability and the performance of precompressed emulsion explosives, the DV was measured. Three types of microballoon or micro bubble ; two types of glass microballoon(GMB), resin microballoon@MB) and chemical gas bubble ; were used as sensitizers for the sample emulsion expiosives. The underwater explosion test was carried out to load dynamic pressure into the sample explosives. The dynamic pressure was generated by the detonation of a donor explosive, and the DV of the sample explosives as acceptor was measured by ionized gap terminals. The dynamic pressure level and initiation interval for the donor and the acceptor were chosen as experimental factors. The detonability was carefully investigated at short initiation intervals taking into consideration the interaction between same delays caused by the deviation of the ignition time of the electric detonators. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The DV of precompressed emulsion explosives was low compared with that of uncompressed emulsion explosives in all pressure conditions. B) The decrease of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB s was larger than that of DV in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs or chemical gas bubbles. C) The recovery of the detonability occurred rapidly in the sample explosives sensitized by RMBs and chemical gas bubbles. However, a long period was needed for the recovery of detonability in the sample explosives sensitized by GME! s. It was concluded that the type of microballoon and micro bubble significantly influenced the detonability of precompressed emulsion explosives.
