The mechanism of clay slime flocculation in coal washing circuits is considered and it is concluded that polymer flocculants are most suitable. It was found that the addition of sea water with a polymer flocculant improved flocculation and settling, and it was also found that dilution of a flocculated pulp increased floc size and hence settling rate.In predicting plant consumption of reagent it was found that cylinder tests, or even pilot plant tests, could give erroneous results, particularly on flocculated pulps. Different flocculants may, however, be compared in cylinder tests.For filtration, flocculation with Separan plus sea water was much more beneficial than flocculation with Separan alone.INTRODUCTIONDuring the mining of coal, and its subsequent beneficiation by washing, large quantities of minus 10 mesh material are produced. This fine material, which consists of broken down shales and fine coal, causes difficulties in water clarification circuits, in refuse disposal, and in filtration of fine coal.These difficulties can be largely overcome by flocculation, and this paper discusses the mechanism of flocculation, the methods by which a selection of flocculant may be made from the large number available, and the limitation of the prediction of plant performance from laboratory tests. This work applies particularly to the washeries of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) and Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. (A.I. & S.) .

Iron ore samples selected from the Deepdale, Iron Prince and Mt. Newman ore bodies have been pelletised on a pilot scale plant and subsequently reduced under laboratory conditions by hydrogen or carbon monoxide. Pellets approximately 1 cm in diameter have been reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 5000- 900¦C and the results examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95% reduction the rate of reduction could be described by a transport con- trolled porous model, in which the effective diffusivities of hydrogen in theòpr¦duct layer and the reaction zone are filar. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. ve 95% reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation_of retained wustite or fayalite. Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 7500 - 900¦C showed that the rate eduction by carbon monoxide was approximately five times slower than the rate by hydrogen. The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the properties of the pellets, which may account for the ely conflicting results that have been obtained in previous investigation on porous pellets.

Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the outburst-prone Gemini Coal (Bowen Basin) showed that outbursts were associated with a localized inertinite-rich ply. Previous studies of the Gemini Coal had shown a general relationship between desorption rate, regarded as a good measure of outburst proneness, and inertinite content of coal samples.Desorption rates increased with increasing inertinite content and were highest for inertodetrinite-rich samples. These results suggest that inertinite content and composition play a significant role in outbursting and may be useful in identifying outburst-prone coals, which could be confirmed by desorption measurements.Consequently outburst-prone areas in the Upper Permian coal measures ofthe Sydney, Gunnedah and Bowen Basins have been defined using a combination ofthe parameters, inertinite content, depth ofcover and coal rank. In the Upper Permian, inertinite-rich coals are confined mainly to the top of the coal measures, except in the Sydney and Gunnedah Basins where an inertinite-rich interval (Bayswater Coal and correlatives) is also present towards the base of these measures. Only a small area ofthe central Sydney Basin, butmuch ofthe north-eastern and north-central part of the exposed Bowen Basin is considered outburst prone on the basis of these parameters.The most outburst-prone inertodetrinite-rich lithologies have a patchy and unpredictable distribution in the top of the Upper Permian coal measures. They can be defined only by sampling and petrographic analysis at the subsection level.

Virtual reality (VR) simulators represent a powerful tool for training humans to perform tasks which are otherwise expensive or dangerous to duplicate in the real world. The idea is not new. Flight simulators have been used for decades to train pilots for both commercial and military aviation. These systems have advanced to a point that they are integral to both the design and the operation of modern aircraft (Adams, Klowden and Hannaford, 2001; Mastaglio and Callahan, 1995). This technology has been successfully extended and utilised in the mining industry in a range of successful applications (Bise, 1997; Denby and Schofield, 1999a; Schofield, 2005; Henning et al, 2002; Kaiser, Vasak and Suorineni, 2005). There are a number of lessons that can be learned from other industries that have successfully utilised virtual technology for a number of years. Specific rules of thumb regarding the specification, development, application and operation of these simulators can be garnered from other industrial training systems and examined in a minerals industry context (Tromp and Schofield, 2004; Schofield, 2006). This paper intends to discuss some of these generic rules in the context of a number of recently developed virtual reality mining applications.

SINCE writing the above-mentioned paper, some further indicator cards have been taken from the No. 1 machine, and the writers believe that a reproduction of these cards will be interesting as illustrating the performance of the machine after fifteen month steady running, night and day, seven days per week and twenty-four hours per day, at the average speed of fifty-seven revolutions per minute (see Fig. 1, page 60). For the past twelve months no adjustment have been made in the valve setting, and the only repairs have been in connection with the springs of the poppet valves, and these but slight, the springs latterly having been removed. The cards illustrated were taken with one indicator, and, therefore, are not simultaneous, andmay show to some extent the yariations of individual strokes, and with that qualification may be taken as typical of the machine's average performance.In connection with some feed-water measurements of the winding engines a rough test was run with the two compressors, the Riedler and the Corliss, coupled to the condenser, and running at fifteen and fifty-seven revolutions per minute respectively, with the result of 15.9 pounds of steam per indicated horse power per hour. This result, though only approximate, seems to indicate that the No. 1 machine is running under the guaranteed consumption, and that it is capable of maintaining this under the severe conditions of everyday practice.

Spatial data processing using geographic information systems produces qualitative results which are superior to those from other existing software tools. However, the answers to various quantitative questions in mining operations is often limited by the capacity of the GIS to process appropriate spatial data. The efficient operation of a large underground mine demands that an adequate GIS be put in place.

A continuous casting machine, of the Concast curved mould design casting billets in four strands, was commissioned at the Newcastle Works of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd., in November, 1967. Quality assessment of early casts from this plant indicated that steel cleanliness was sometimes inferior to that of equival- ent ingot cast steel. Extensive trials to develop a modified deoxidation technique were not successful in improving clean- liness to the desired level. A "contra-flow" gas shroud, to cover the steel stream between the tundish and the mould, was developed, and proved successful in achieving the required levels of product cleanliness. The inclusion content of six grades of steel ranging in carbon content from 0.10 to 0.70 per cent is examined, and an attempt is made to explain theoretically some of the results obtained.

Models of the evolution of the hydrothermal systems that form porphyry Cu (Mo-Au) deposits are compromised because aqueous magma-derived fluids in the ore zones of most deposits have changed from their original magmatic compositions as a result of cooling, depressurising, mineral precipitation, brine-vapour unmixing and fluid-rock reactions. However, in deep quartz-rich, sulfide-poor veins from numerous porphyry type deposits, we have identified parental fluids trapped in inclusions at near magmatic temperatures and pressures above the brine-vapour unmixing solvus. We have analysed these inclusions for bulk salinity, density, solute chemistry, helium isotopic ratios and elemental composition. These parental inclusions contain 35 - 70 volume per cent bubble, are low to moderate salinity, contain up to ten mol per cent CO2, and commonly contain a chalcopyrite daughter crystal. Our results indicate that these Cu-rich fluids transport Cu from a plutonic complex below upward into a hydrothermal system, where decompression, cooling, unmixing and water-rock reaction drive ore-mineral precipitation. Na/Cl ratios greater than one indicate that in addition to chlorine, sulfur and/or carbonate must play a key role in Cu transportation. Helium isotope ratios indicate that between ~15 and 100 per cent of helium in these fluids is mantle-derived. We suggest that in addition to He, volatiles from mafic magmas in the mantle are also likely to supply CO2, Cu and S to the fluids that form porphyry copper deposits. Before commencing design of a coal prepar ation plant, it is essential to have detailed information of the raw coal to be treated to- gether with a clear understanding of the products required. Prediction of raw coal size distribution, particularly the amount of fine material, is difficult and the methods employed should be large scale pilot plant studies or techniques to simulate coal degradation and shale breakdown in water. A detailed knowledge of well proven coal preparation processes and new developments allows processes and process combinations to be compared to'obtain the maximum economic recovery when using lower cost, less efficient processes within acceptable limits. Equipment should be selected bearing in mind its precise application and the location where it is installed. Plant layout should be carefully studied to minimise equipment requirements and to simplify construction. Measurement, control and automation should be an integral part of plant design in order to obtain the optimum performance of the processing equipment.

Investigations were carried out to understand the effect of liquid viscosity (u = 1 x 10-3 - 5 x 10-' Ns/m2) on the size of primary bubbles formed at high gas injection rates (Q = 100 - 1000 cc/s, U = 0.04 - 0.42 mach) under room temperature conditions using flush tuyere (3 mm diameter) operating vertically upward. Tuyere pressure fluctuations were correlated to the mode of bubble formation by simultaneously filming the bubble and the corresponding tuyere pressure fluctuations displayed on an oscilloscope screen. A simple mathematical treatment is presented to estimate bubble size in viscous liquids. The theoretical results are compared with the experimental measurements.

A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. Ferromanganese nodules form a specific category of widespread marine mineral deposits. The tremendous increase in metal prices during the last decade raised new economic interest in their exploration. The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), which had been engaged in nodule research in the 1970s and 1980s, renewed its activities on this subject based on an exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority, signed in 2006. BGRÆs licence area û comprising 75 000 km2 û is located between the Clarion and the Clipperton Fracture Zones. In this so-called nodule belt north of the equator the sea floor reaches water depths of >4000 m. About 900 million tonnes of manganese nodules are expected there. In this study the fine-scale distribution of important elements in manganese nodules and crusts from a variety of locations was investigated. Besides 11 samples from the RV SONNE cruise SO-25, numerous samples from additional locations were included in this study for comparison. In general, the sample suite includes two genetic types of precipitates, manganese nodules and Co-rich crusts. A detailed characterisation of the distribution of major, minor and important trace elements in manganese nodules based on in situ microenergy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (¦-EDXRF) analysis is presented here. The data are compared with bulk major, minor and trace element data as well as with quantitative electron probe microanalysis (EMPA) data sets. The element distribution maps and profiles produced by ¦-EDXRF analysis with short or extended (in case of profiles) counting times, allow precise selection of æregions of interestÆ for further detailed investigation using high spatial resolution techniques (eg scanning electron microscope (SEM)-EDAX; laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICPMS); isotopic studies).

Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyllite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that c ross-cuts the Cu, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

The genesis of the Bulong Laterite Ni/Co deposit spans some 60 per cent of earth history: from development of the parent rocks in the Archaean to lateritic weathering in the Cainozoic. In a man's term, the discovery and evaluation history of the deposits has also been protracted and, at any given time, the perceived value of the deposits has depended upon the available technology and world markets.

In an attempt to increase underground productivity Coal and Allied has introduced a continuous haulage unit into it's Moonee colliery. A second unit is planned for Nallarah colliery in the near future. Both systems will be roof mounted or monorail type and manufactured by Joy Manufacturing Pty Ltd. The introduction of these machines is seen as a logical step in improving the efficiency of mining with continuous miners. This could be in conjunction with longwall mining in the rapid development of gate roads or, as in the case with these machines, as conventional development and extraction units. The advantages of the continuous haulage system are; Relatively low cost. 2 Ability to obtain high productivity in irregular or disturbed coal reserves not suitable for longwall mining. 3 Increased worker safety with the elimination of shuttle cars and the majority of trailing cables. 4 Increased productivity independent of soft or difficult floor conditions. At the time of writing the Moonee installation is 6 months old. The Nallarah machine is due for delivery March 1988.

Factors influencing Cost, systems available for transporting minerals, particularly on land, and methods used for comparing costs are reviewed. A case study presents comparative costs graphically for coal haulage, assumed in Queensland, by 31-6" gauge rail, belt conveyor, 120 ton road train, slurry pipeline, and transmission of electrical energy by transmission line. The effect on comparative results of alternative methods of including initial capital and capital replacement costs is considered and approximate break-even points between systems, bearing in mind the assumptions taken, are discussed.
