The phase diagram of the titanium-rich portion of the system Ti-Cr-Fe to 70 pct Ti was established by means of isothermal sections at 900°, 800°, 750°, 700°, 650°, 600°, and 550°C, using arc-cast alloys. An isotherm at 800°C was determined for the section bounded by Ti, TiFe2, and TiCr2. Micrographic analysis was employed as the principal method of investigation, supplemented by X-ray diffraction and incipient melting studies. A ternary eutectoid, ß ? a+ TiCr2 + TiFe, occurs at approximately 8 wt pct Cr, 13 wt pct Fe, and about 540°C. AMONG the first titanium-base alloys in commercial production were the Ti-Cr-Fe alloys. For this reason, the Materials Laboratory, Wright Air Development Center, sponsored an investigation of the system. No information on the constitution of the titanium-rich corner was available. Vogel and Wenderott studied titanium-poor ternary alloys.' As part of this program, the binary systems Ti-Cr and Ti-Fe have been determined previously by the authors.' Other investigators have also studied the binary systems Ti-Cr,3-7' Ti-Fe.³,8-10 Both of the binary systems are characterized by the eutectoid decomposition of the ß phase. Most of the effort of the present work has been concentrated on the titanium-rich corner with compositions of less than 30 pct total chromium and iron content. The determination of isothermal sections was the experimental approach used to obtain the ternary phase diagram. Vertical sections were used to check the consistency of the isothermal sections. While this investigation was in progress, a study of the Ti-Mo-Cr system at Armour Research Foundation disclosed the existence of a high temperature modification of TiCr2 above 1300 °C.11 This allotrope has a hexagonal structure of the MgZn2 type, iso-morphous with TiFe2, whereas the low temperature modification of TiCr2 is cubic," of the MgCu2 type. The existence of allotropy in TiCr2 of course means a more complicated set of phase relationships in this general region than if the phase were monomorphic, as was first assumed. Additional studies were made late in the investigation in order to clarify the part that the hexagonal TiCr2 phase plays in the ternary phase relationships. These will be discussed in a separate section. Because they are of greatest practical significance, the phase relationships in the titanium-rich corner will be presented first, omitting the equilibria involving the hexagonal modification of TiCr2 in an effort to simplify the presentation somewhat. Experimental Procedure Materials: The titanium used in the preparation of the alloys was iodide crystal bar (99.9 pct pure) produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co. High purity chromium and iron were obtained from the National Research Corp. Table I gives the analyses of these materials. Melting Practice: Over 100 alloy ingots weighing 10 to 20 g were melted in a nonconsumable electrode arc-melting furnace. As the techniques are identical to those reported previously,12,13 they will not be detailed here. For the year 1943, exploratory drilling in South Central Texas continued on the sharp decline that started during 1942. Of the 3 counties comprising this district, as now revised to include the same area as is covered by District No. I, Oil and Gas Division, Railroad Commission of Texas, I5 counties are producing oil or gas. Only 29 exploratory wells were drilled during 1943, as compared with 51 exploratory wells in 1942, or a decrease of over 40 per cent. One new oil field and one new gas field were discovered during the year and a new horizon was discovered in an existing oil field. This cornpares with two new oil fields and an extension to an existing gas field in 1942. The one new oil field, South Washburn, in southeastern La Salle County, was discovered by Quintana Petroleum Corporation's No. I-D South Texas indicate in April 1943, flowing 4 bbl. per day, 48" A.P.I. gravity oil with an estimated 4 million cubic feet of gas from Wilcox sand at 6030 ft. This well i's the result of an extensive seismograph survey of the area. It is about 434 miles southwest of the same company's Green Branch field and by the end of the year one dry hole had been drilled to the southwest of this discovery. The one new gas field, which was not named, was located in eastern McMullen County by Edwin M. Jones' No. 102 Ezzell, in November 1943, for an estimated 8 million cubic feet of gas from shallow Jackson sand at 1222 ft. NO addi- tional wells have been drilled in this area, which may also be considered as an extension to the South Calliham field. The one new producing horizon was discovered in the South Campana field in southeastern McMullen County, by Argo Oil Corporation's No. 2-G Edrington, in January 1943, flowing 55 bbl. per day, 21' A.P.I. gravity oil with 40 per cent water from Government wells sand at 2609 feet. None of these discoveries were of major importance and subsequent development in these new areas has proved to be disappointing. Produc'tion for the district during 1943 totaled approximately 6,985,000 bbl. from about 3430 producing wells. This is an increase in production of about 5 per cent over 1942, but a decrease in producing wells of about 10 per cent under the number of wells producing in 1942 for the same district. Average production per well was 5.4 bbl. during 1943 as against 4.8 bbl. during 1942. Approximately 5,320,000 hhl. of this total production, or 76 per cent, was produced by the four Edwards lime fields, Luling, Branyon, Salt Flat, and Darst Creek, which are from 22 to 14 years old. The remaining production came from the 43 other active oil fields in the district. Drilling in the proven fields maintained approximately the same level as for 1942, with a total of 36 wells drilled. Of these operations, 21 were oil wells, one was a gas well and 14 were dry holes. This is a slightly better proportion of producers than for 1942. Washburn field had the greatest number of new producing wells drilled during the year, with a total of 10.

Used as a classifier in a plant expanding capacity or changing to closed-circuit operation, the liquid-solid cyclone offers the advantage of being adaptable to existing conditions. This paper presents the costs involved and experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. BY now application of the liquid-solid cyclone to various classification problems in the chemical and metallurgical fields is more or less familiar. A less publicized application receiving wider consideration as time goes on is its use as a classifier in closed-circuit grinding operations. This paper presents the costs involved and the experience gained from operating a unit of this kind. In May 1951 the Tennessee Copper Co. installed in its London mill at Copperhill, Tenn., a liquid-solid cyclone in closed circuit with a 6x12-ft ball mill. The circuit in which this cyclone is used is the regrind or secondary grinding circuit of a copper flotation plant. Originally it consisted of a 7x1-ft conical ball mill in closed circuit with a bowl classifier. Changes made in the primary grinding circuit of the mill necessitated a regrind circuit of greater capacity. The bulk concentrate to be ground was raised from 900 or 1000 tpd to 1200 or 1300 tpd, and to accommodate this increase a 6x12-ft ball mill which had been in the primary grinding circuit was moved into the regrind circuit. When this was done it was found that the classifier was too small to give efficient operation. Space in the plant was at a premium, and since use of the cyclone offered considerable economy the installation shown in Figs. 1-3 was made. The unit installed is a 24-in. diam cyclone classifier with a 20" cone angle. Diameter of the vortex finder is 8 in., the feed entrance area 20 sq. in. Maximum diameter of the adjustable apex valve is 6 in. and minimum diameter approximately 3.5 in. To refer again to Figs. 1 and 2, the cyclone* is mounted motor. It is charged with 18 tons of 1-in. balls. The overflow, or fines, passes by gravity directly to the copper flotation plant. The ball mill discharge and the new feed combine in a sump from which they are sent to the cone by an 8x6 SRL pump at a rate of 497 gpm. Pressure at the cyclone is 5 psi. For reasons dictated by the nature of the ore treated, particularly the bonding of fine grains of chalcopyrite to pyrrhotite, the froth from the second cell of the copper rougher circuit is returned to the regrind mill. This flow, which somewhat complicates the standard closed-circuit calculation, is seen in Fig. 1 to be 156 tpd of solids. This combines with the cyclone classifier underflow to constitute the ball mill feed. The requirement of the regrind product is that it be 77 to 80 pct —200 mesh. The liquid-solids cyclone operating in conjunction with the 6x12-ft mill adequately met this requirement. Of primary importance is the fact that this arrangement provided sufficient classification capacity to replace the undersized classifier and was capable of building up a circulating load to 87 pct, large enough to give an efficient grind. In this instance the circulating load is taken as the ratio of sands to new feed. Any comparison of performance between this liquid-solid cyclone and the replaced classifier would of course be unfair, since the bowl classifier was

HE sensitivity of twinning in molybdenum alloys containing 20 or more at. pct Re was reported by Dickenson and Richardson&apos; and Sims et a1.&apos; The latter3 also studied the effect of twinning on plastic deformation of these alloys. Recently, in this laboratory, the twinning planes in a series of Mo-Re alloys were successfully identified by tracing their boundaries on two known surfaces of the crystals, with the aid of stereographic projection. The nominal alloy composition and the results of the determination are listed in Table I. Metallic powders of molybdenum and rhenium with 99.9 pct purity were mixed, pressed and arc-melted into buttons under purified argon in a water-cooled copper hearth; the buttons were annealed at 2400 °C in vacuum (10-&apos;mm Hg) for 1 hr, remelted under argon and finally reannealed in vacuum at 2400°C for another hour. This treatment yielded a homogeneous alloy. Large-grain specimens devoid of subgrains were obtained with grain diameter varying from 1/8 to 1/2 in. A typical specimen weighed about 15 g. Orientations were determined by taking X-ray back reflection photographs for each grain on a polished surface of the specimens. Two surfaces were cut and polished; the angle between the two surfaces was measured with an accuracy of *2o. The twins were produced by compression in a hydraulic press at room temperature. Usually, several sets of twins could be obtained within each grain. Except in cases where no twins were formed, (Crystals 7, 8, and 9) the twinning planes were identified consistently as the (112) family over a wide range of alloying compositions and surface orientations of the crystals, as indicated in the stereo-graphic triangle in Fig. 1. The twins, however, were not broad enough to accommodate a conventional X-ray beam and no identification could be made of the twinning direction. Nevertheless, the direction must be one that lies in a plane of symmetry perpendicular to the twinning plane. There are only two such possible planes in a bcc lattice, namely the (110) and the (100) planes. Of these, only the (110) planes are perpendicular to (112), and the <111> direction is the intersection of the two perpendicular planes. It can thus be concluded that <1l1> is the twinning direction. The twinning elements of molybdenum have been reported as the (112) planes and the <111> directions,4 which are also the operative elements in other body-centered-cubic metals, such as W, a-Fe, and ß -brass.5 Thus, the present finding of the twinning elements in Mo- Re alloys supports the concept that twinning formation is mainly governed by the lattice structure. It is of interest to note that for specimens containing 12 at. Pct Re or less, no twins were found after being plastically deformed to as much as 30 pct reduction in height by compression, while for the 35 at. pct Re alloy, twins were formed with less than 1 pct deformation. This, of course, does not exclude the possibilities that for Re-Mo alloys containing 12 pct Re or less, twins could be formed under different conditions, such as at liquid air temperature or under impact loading. The present results, however, suggest that under the same conditions twinning is increasingly sensitive with increasing rhenium content. Consequently, the plastic strain at which twinning starts was found inversely proportional to the amount of rhenium in solid solution with molybdenum. This plastic strain necessary to cause twinning may be used as a criterion in the study of twinning characteristics.

THE present work was done in connection with a program for investigating metal-to-ceramic braze techniques using the well-known reactivity of titanium with certain ceramic oxides. The investigation extended over the range of 0 to 30 pct Ti. The indium was obtained from the Indium Corp. of America and was specified to be 99.97 pct pure. The titanium was supplied by Metals Disintegrating Co. and was stated to be 99.5 pct pure. Each 2 to 4 g quantity of the alloy compositions studied was prepared using a mixture of 300 mesh powders pressed into pellet form. The pellets were heated in thin-walled molybdenum crucibles using a resistance-wound furnace in a vacuum less than 10-4 mm of Hg. Little reaction occurred between the molten alloy and the crucibles at the temperatures and short time intervals used. Only slight spectroscopic traces of molybdenum were found in the melt after a typical period of heating. The points shown on the phase diagram of Fig. 1 represent thermal arrest measurements. The phase boundaries shown are consistent with the thermal arrest and X-ray data obtained. The temperatures were determined using a Pt-Pt 10 pct Rh thermocouple with the junction spot-welded to a short molybdenum rod. The rod was almost completely immersed in the liquid metal, so that good thermal contact with the melt was achieved. The small mass of the crucible and its contents made it possible to obtain many heating and cooling curves in a few minutes time, an advantage which helped to minimize the effects of indium evaporation at the higher temperatures. A Brown strip chart recorder was used to display the thermal arrest curves. To check the technique, the melting point of 99.999 pure Al was measured and found to be within 1 of 660.2c, the accepted melting point. The upper limit of temperature with this technique was about 900°C beyond which the evaporation rate of indium became great enough to alter appreciably the alloy composition during the runs. A peritectic transition was found at 796°+ 5°C from 1.5 to 30 wt pct Ti. It was not found at 0.5 or 1.0 pct. A small super-cooling effect was observed. The melting-point transition to the B + L phase was found up to 20 pct Ti but not at 25 pct. Within the 1 deg accuracy of the measurement, the transition temperature was that of pure indium, 156°C. The liquidus line to the left of the 1.5 titanium point was located only approximately. The two crossed circle points at 1.0 and 0.5 pct Ti place a lower limit on the liquidus line and were determined by observing visually the cessation of vibrations in the melt caused by the damping effect as B-phase crystals were formed during cooling. The B-phase boundary was found at 23.8 pct Ti by X-ray analyses of small single crystals of the B phase isolated from 2 pct Ti melts. The compound was found to be Jetragonal with lattice dimensions of c = 3.052A and a = 10.094W. From the unit cell dimensions and the measured density of 6.42 i 0.05 g per cc, the compound was determined to be In4Ti3 which has 23.8 pct Ti. The torsional after-effect in polycrystalline cadmium is interrupted by an abnormal twisting when the film is removed by etching. This is accounted for by the pile-up of dislocations beneath anodic or other oxide films during the original twisting, and the relief of the residual stresses from these by elastic and plastic processes during etching. WHEN an iron or zinc wire coated with oxide is plastically twisted and then released, it untwists according to a law of equal increments in equal intervals of log time, but if the oxide is suddenly removed by etching this normal after-effect is interrupted by a transient, and thereafter the untwisting is slower.&apos; Etching may even reverse the strain temporarily. Related effects caused by hydrated oxide films on cadmium in creep tests have been observed by Phillips and Thompson:&apos; definite transient strains caused by the removal of the film from single crystals of cadmium were observed; however, negligible effects were obtained with polycrystalline wires. Pronounced effects of both transient and steady nature were observed by Phillips and Thompson when anodic films 10-4 cm thick were etched off, and weak effects, transient only, occurred with hydrated oxide films 3x10 cm thick such as were formed by standing in water for 10 min. It was estimated that 10.&apos; cm films, formed in water in 1 or 2 min, could be detected in the apparatus of Phillips and Thompson. Since abnormal after-effects were observed by the torsion method equally well with polycrystalline and monocrystalline iron and zinc wires,&apos; it was anticipated that the torsion method would also disclose them in polycrystalline cadmium, in spite of the fact that analogous effects had not been observed in tensile creep tests on polycrystalline zinc by Pickus and Parker3 r on polycrystalline cadmium in tensile studies by Andrade and Randall." Because of its high sensitivity, particularly its sensitivity to surface conditions, the torsion method was thought to merit further study as a method of investigating thin films of various types and the action of various reagents on these films. Materials and Methods Cadmium wires were cold-drawn to a diameter of 0.039 in. from a stock that was determined spectro-scopically to contain 0.05 pct Bi, 0.005 pct Cu, 0.008 pct Pb, and 0.007 pct Si. The wires were cut to about 17/8 in. lengths and were annealed 1 hr in air at 290°C, after which the grain size was such that there were 5 to 7 grains across a diameter. The wires were then mounted as indicated in the insert in Fig. 1, one end being fastened with laboratory wax into a small diameter brass tube and the other end being waxed to a thin glass fiber which supported, on its upper end, a small galvanometer mirror. The wires were waxed with care to avoid straining or annealing, for it was found that the after-effect rate was sensitive to prior cold work in a wire. The assembly was then clamped above a beaker into which the reagent could be poured. The lower end of the wire was held in the hand while the wire was twisted 180"; it was then released immediately. Since precision timing of these manipulations was not attempted, the different wires cannot be compared as to exact rates of untwisting. The length subjected to plastic strain was 15/8 in. The sillimanite family of minerals, including kyanite, sillimanite, and andalusite, are anhydrous aluminum silicates with the formula A12O3-SiO2. Dumortierite and topaz are also included in this group because they are closely allied in composition and thermal behavior. However, neither are mined commercially today. They are typical metamorphic minerals which are found in metamorphic rocks on every continent. Sillimanite minerals are prized chiefly for their refractoriness and are important components in a broad range of acid refractory products, especially in mortars and castables. World production of sillimanite minerals is currently about 400,000 tpy and has been increasing at the rate of 3 to 8% a year for many years (Anon., 1972). While these minerals have widespread occurrence, the consumption of sillimanite minerals is concentrated in the relatively few highly industrialized areas where refractories are manufactured, and which in turn are typically close to the major iron and steel producing regions of the world. Thus northern Europe,. England, the United States, and Japan are the principal consumers of refractories and sillimanite minerals. Of these countries only the US is a significant producer. Uses of Kyanite The following specifications are typical for the domestic kyanite industry: Raw Kyanite Concentrates Chemical Analysis 56% AI2O3 min 0.1% CaO max 42% SiO2 0.1% MgO max 1% Acid soluble 0.3% combined Fe2O3 alkali max 1.2% TiO2 max Available Sizes 35, 48, 100, 200, and 325 mesh The largest use for domestic kyanite, both raw and calcined, is in the manufacture of refractory mortars, cements, castables, and plastic ramming mixes. In these applications kyanite constitutes from 10 to 40% of the mixture, the balance being refractory clays and coarser grog materials. A certain proportion of raw kyanite is used to offset the shrinking of the clay binder, whereas the calcined kyanite is used in the coarser sizes for body. Certain high grade refractory shapes and kiln furniture are composed chiefly of graded sizes of calcined kyanite bonded with a little ball clay. In most applications, however, kyanite is used only to fortify the mix or as a minor ingredient. Some manufacturers of mullite brick use domestic calcined kyanite for the fine-grained portion of the brick, but seldom in quantities exceeding 10% by weight. Kyanite is used by ceramic manufacturers of wall tile and sanitary ware to offset shrinkage and cracking after firing. Indian kyanite has traditionally been used to make the coarse grog sizes needed for the manufacture of mullite brick, and for the grog portions of mortar, cement, and castable mixes. It has been largely replaced, however, by synthetic mullite, high fired flint, and diaspore clay or calcined bauxite for other applications. Indian kyanite has been available in lump as well as in granules and concentrates, as are sillimanite materials from India and South Africa. Andalusite is available as 8 mesh granules and as fines with chemical analyses not unlike those of domestic kyanites. From time to time and from place to place minor amounts of other aluminum silicate minerals such as dumortierite, topaz, and pyrophyllite have been made available at various prices and specifications, but have not been significant factors in the refractory industry. As this meeting is being held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Foundrymen&apos;s Association, the members of the Institute will have the privileges of the exhibit of the Foundrymen&apos;s Association. This, it is expected, will be one of the largest exhibits made in this country. On Monday evening, Sept. 29, there will be a meeting, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, of former officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Institute. Since World War II we have all been treated to repeated public and private evaluation of the population explosion. Improvements in medicine and agriculture have brought greater life expectancy and a decreasing infant mortality rate. This has brought boom conditions to some areas-and pressures everywhere for the amenities of life: a little elbow room, a tree or a pot of flowers, space to hike or swim with some freedom have all become premium commodities. With this wish for privacy and attractive surroundings, people are being forced to move to once sparsely populated areas. Suburbs expand or sprawl, depending on the point of view. New country is touched by a freeway and houses and stores spring up overnight. Entire new cities are born to meet the increasing mobility of industry and its work force.

The V-Rh-Si, Nb-Rh-Si, and Cr-Rh-Si systems were investigated to evaluate the extent of solid solubility between binary Cr3O structures. All Cr3O components lie within the favorable atomic size range1 for the formation of the Cr3O structure. Previous studies indicated complete solid solubility between V3Si and V3Sn2 and no solubility between Sn and cr3si3 or Si and Nb3Rh.4 The Cr3O structure is not found in the Cr-Sn and Nb-Si binary systems. Powder compacts were are-melted under argon, homogenized in a vacuum at 1000°C, and water-quenched. Alloys containing greater than 15 at. pet Si were annealed 100 hr. X-ray diffractometer methods were used to study all systems utilizing copper radiation for the Cr-Rh-Si system and chromium radiation for the other two systems. V-Rh-Si System. The alloys prepared in the V-Rh-Si system and the measured lattice parameters for the Cr3O structure found in each alloy are listed in Table I. The characteristic Cr3O diffraction pattern was found in all binary alloys. The measured lattice parameter of V3Rh (VRS-1) is in agreement with the reported value5 while the value for V3Si (VRS-5) is only in fair agreement.&apos; In

A data-classification scheme was developed to detect potential uranium mineralization in the Montrose l º x 2º quadrangle, Colorado. The methodology developed is a rapid and efficient method of resource evaluation on a reconnaissance scale. The necessary techniques were developed and refined to digitize, integrate, and register various large geological, geochemical, and geophysical data sets for the Montrose quadrangle, Colorado, using a grid resolution of 1 km. All data sets for the Montrose quadrangle were registered to the Universal Trans- verse Mercator projection. The data sets include hydrogeochemical and stream sediment analyses for 23 elements, uranium-to-thorium ratios, airborne geo- physical survey data, the locations of 90 uranium occurrences, and a geologic map (scale 1:250 000). Geochemical samples were collected from 3965 locations in the 19 200 km2 quadrangle; aerial data were collected on flight lines flown with 3-5 km spacings. These data sets were smoothed by universal kriging and interpolated to a 179 x 119 rectangular grid (each grid block is 1 km2). A mylar transparency of the geologic map was prepared and digitized. All possible combinations of three, for all data sets, were examined for general geologic correlations by utilizing a color microfilm output. Subsets of data were further examined for selected test areas. A classification scheme for uranium mineralization, based on selected test areas in the Cochetopa uranium district, is presented. Areas favorable for uranium mineralization, based on this scheme, were identified and are discussed.

THE mechanism of classification by settling pools is most simply shown in the case of batch sedimentation such as was analyzed by Oden.1 The batch model will be considered, therefore, and it will be shown that the same mechanism applies to continuous operation. Classification in Batch Settling Pools: Consider a beaker or tank of slurry containing particles so dispersed that they can settle independently of one another under the influence of gravity. Originally all particle sizes are uniformly distributed throughout the suspension. All particles start immediately to settle towards the bottom at rates determined by their size, shape, and density—among other factors. Particles reaching the bottom settle out of suspension. After some given time the slurry above the deposited solids is siphoned off or otherwise removed, leaving the deposited solids behind. The deposited solids, together with entrained and any unremoved supernatant slurry, represent the underflow of a classifier. The slurry removed represents the overflow. There is a certain separation, size of particle which during the sedimentation has just time to settle from the top surface of the slurry to the level at which underflow and overflow are parted. All particles with a faster settling rate will have dropped to below this level, no matter where in the beaker they started from originally, and therefore will be absent from the overflow. Particles with a slower settling rate will not reach this level if they started from the top of the slurry, but a portion of them,

IN giving my opinion of the importance of Colombia as a field for investment for those interested in mining for the precious metals, I must begin by quoting Sir Clement Markham, who, in one of his presidential addresses to the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain, called the attention of its members to the fact that " although Colombia is the least known and least developed of the South American republics, it is far and away the richest mineral country of then all." This to American investors is extremely interesting, as the country is the most accessible of all the South American republics from the United States. Almost all of the gold shipped by the Spaniards from Madre de Dios, now Colon, came from Colombia, and statistics from the Mint at Medellin, the capital of the Department of Antioquia, go to show that the total production of the precious metals of Colombia, dating from the Spanish conquest in &apos;the fifteenth century to the present time, aggregates the enormous total of $700,000,000. Of this amount, nearly 70 per cent. represents gold obtained from the placers of the Republic, more than one-half of which came from the Department of Antioquia, the balance being divided between the placers of the Choco and the rest of the Republic. The remaining 30 per cent. of the $700,000,000 represents the silver and gold obtained from the quartz mines, the silver greatly predominating.

Networks of resistors are used as analog computers to obtain relative permeability and resistivity index curves for networks of tubes. These curves have all of the characteristics of those obtained on porous media and, therefore demonstrate the validity of the network of tubes model. INTRODUCTION In paper I&apos; of this series the network model was shown to give information on the structure of porous media that could not be obtained from the bundle of tubes model. The agreement between the capillary pressure characteristics of a network of tubes and those of typical porous media does not prove the validity of the network made. The bundle of tubes model, although it gives less information, also shows this agreement. In this paper the flow properties of a network of tubes are shown to be in agreement with flow properties of porous media. The flow properties of the bundle of tubes model are not in adequate agreement with those of porous media. The dynamic properties of porous media, such as fluid permeability and electrical conductivity, have been found experimentally to be more sensitive functions of structure and pore size distribution than are the static properties such as porosity and capillary pressure characteristics. The network model can, therefore, be best tested by comparing the dynamic properties of a network of tubes with the observed properties of porous media. All static and dynamic properties of a completely valid model must agree with the observed properties. The most commonly measured sensitive dynamic properties are the relative fluid permeability and the relative electrical resistivity. Experimental measurements of these dynamic properties on sandstone, sintered glass, sintered alumina, and soil are reported in the petroleum and soil science literature. These properties were chosen, therefore, for the test of the network model. In the network model, relative permeability is the permeability of the network when some of the tubes are not conducting fluid, relative to the permeability when all tubes are conducting fluid. Similarly, the relative resistivity is the electrical resistivity of the network of tubes when some of the tubes are filled with a nonconductor. relative to the resistivity when all tubes are filled with the electrical conducting fluid. Single Size Tube Network The simplest porous medium is one in which all pores are of the same size. Such media can be approached by packing beds or columns of uniform size particles of sand, glass, or metal. The model of such medium in this study is a network of single size tubes. The lead-zinc mill of Phelps Dodge Corporation, Copper Queen Branch, Mines Division, Bisbee, Arizona, is about 3 miles from the main hoisting shafts of the Junction and Campbell mines at Lowell. All the ore treated in the mill is obtained from these two mines. The mill was designed for an all-flotation treatment of 450 tons of lead-zinc ore per day, and has been operated at that capacity since the start of milling operations on Nov. 17, 1945. An expansion program is underway whereby the mill capacity will be doubled, but this article describes only the original program and presents results of the 450-ton operation. General Description The milling plant consists of an ore-receiving bin and three steel-constructed buildings housing, respectively, the primary crushing equipment, the secondary crushing equipment, and the ore-storage bins, grinding, flotation, and filtering equipment. The mill site is the one that was used for a previous copper-concentrating plant, which was operated over a period of years and then dismantled. There remained from this operation some milling equipment, a reservoir for mill-water supply, railroad tracks, tailings-disposal ponds, and a steel-constructed building, all of which were incorporated in the design of the present lead-zinc mill. The location plan of the plant layout is shown in Fig I. The flowsheet of the mill is based on the conventional scheme for lead-zinc treatment, however, several innovations were made necessary in order to utilize the existing building. Placing of equipment also was governed by the design of the building; thus making the mill unique in many respects. The following brief description of the mill building as adapted to the flowsheet points out the compactness of the installation and some of its unusual features. The first floor (Fig 2) houses the grinding equipment, with connecting conveyors for ore feeding, also an air compressor, two vacuum pumps, bins for lead and zinc concentrate storage with individual conveying systems for loading the two kinds of concentrates. Filtering of concentrates is done on the second floor, the concentrates discharging directly into the concentrate-storage bins. On this floor are the lead and zinc filters, two diaphragm pumps, sample-filtering equipment, sample-preparation room and a change room for the mill employees. The flotation machines are on the third floor, at elevations allowing a gravity flow of the lead and zinc concentrates to the thickeners. The annex to the building contains a freight elevator and provides space for all reagent mixing and feeding, also storage of reagents and grinding balls.
