Steels for pipelines Since welding was first introduced as a method of joining pipelines, gas-pipeline engineers have taken the opportunity to increase gas pressures, and hence increase the efficiency and economy of transporting gases. A comparison between hydraulic and pneumatic rockdrills by T. C. Marshall, Pr.Eng. (Member) The greatly increased output of rockdrills has placed new demands on booms, carriers, and drill steels and bits. Limited scope for further improvement in pneumatic rockdrills has led to the development of hydraulic rockdrills, which compare favourably with their pneumatic counterparts: they are more efficient, more flexible in coping with variations in the working conditions, more economical in the consumption of drill steel, and less productive of noise and mist. Their disadvantages include a greater need for a reliable power supply, a greater vulnerability to dirt, greater complexity (requiring more skilful maintenance), and the liberation of heat into the working environment. They should be regarded as a complement to, and not as a substitute for, pneumatic rockdrills.

This paper describes the design and implementation of the dispatching system at LAB Chrysotile Inc.'s Black Lake Mine Operation, Quebec, Canada. The initial system uses a computer in a passive role, to record and display information in ongoing operations. Simulation studies were undertaken at McGill University to assess various heuristic dispatching rules which can be program- med and inserted into the dispatching system. The computer can then suggest to the operator where a truck should be sent to maximize productivity or improve fleet efficiency. The study stresses the importance of considering the effects of implementing computerized systems on those individuals who must use these systems in their daily work. The roles of individuals from the industry and the university in this joint project are also highlighted.

In the second of a series of five colloquia with the theme Rescue 91 ..Survival Initiatives for the Mining Industry, the emphasis was placed on the harnessing of improved technology for the benefit of all the industry. The Colloquium was held at Mintek, Randburg, and attracted some 150 delegates and speakers from a cross-section of the industry. Eight papers were presented, and panel discussions were held to round off the morning and afternoon sessions. The purpose of the Colloquium was to allow mines and other groups to put forward innovative schemes in the management of technology that could be shared by everyone in their determination to ensure the survival of the gold-mining industry in the current difficult times. Secunda Collieries forms part of Sasol Coal, the coal division of the Sasol Group of companies, and already produces 29 Mt of coal per annum from its four collieries: Twistdraai, Brandspruit, Bosjesspruit, and Middelbult. The successful establishment of this mining complex was achieved only through a unique team spirit in which the central services and the decentralized teams under the leadership of the mine management of each of the four mines played an important role. The Secunda mining complex has now reached the optimization phase, during which the mining cost, productivity, safety, and quality of work become as important as production. The setting of priorities and problem solving over the long, medium, and short term are essential for improving the performance of the four collieries. Management had to adapt to the fast-changing environment during the enormously fast build-up of production. The major challenges in the environment were posed by the frequent dolerite intrusions, the extremely hard cutting conditions caused by carbonated nodules and thin sandstone intrusions in the coal seam, and excessive roof and face pressure in some areas due to semi-massive sandstone formations in the rock strata.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes the rib-pillar extraction method now used at Sigma Colliery in the Orange Free State. In this method, access roadways (with a high safety factor) are developed into a block of coal suitable for total extraction; pillars that have a low safety factor are then formed and extracted immediately. The method, together with the current practices of labour management, has resulted in better utilization of the coal resources and capital, increased production and labour productivity, and improved safety.

(c) Special Publications Series This series covers titles which do not form part of the Monograph and Symposium Series. (d) The SAIMM Journal Papers published in the Journal cover al relevant areas of technical interest by striving for a balanced content and maintaining a consistently high technical standard. (e) School and Colloquia Notes The papers from al local schools and colloquia are published and handed out at registration. Should authors wish to have their papers considered for publication in the Journal, they should adhere to the guidelines outlined below.

An experimental feritic stainless steel with a chromium content of 40 per cent was welded by laser and electron beam (EB) welding processes. These techniques were found to be particularly suited to the welding of this alloy in that the impact toughness of the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the laser welds compared favourably with those of the parent aloy. When the EB process was used, the impact toughness of the weld metal was over 180 J/cm2. Grain growth in the HAZ was minimal for welding with these two processes. Corosion tests, conducted in a solution consisting of 20 per cent sulphuric acid and 100 p.p.m. of potassium thiocyanate, and In a highly corrosive industrial solution, indicated that the laser and EB welds were free of sensitization effects, thus confirming the metalographic results.

The paper describes how a multivariable control scheme was developed and implemented for the run-of-mine milling circuit at a gold mine belonging to Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited. The key variables that are controlled are slurry level in the sump, mass of material in the mil, and product size. The control scheme has resulted in reliable control of the dynamics of the plant, and has provided a good basis for the optimization of plant operation by the selection of suitable set Points.

Sixteenth to seventeenth century Kalanga miners dug a series of sub-vertical shafts into a 10 to 30 m wide zone of copper ore at the Thakadu Mine near Matsitama, Botswana. They went down at least 6 m in search of thick malachite veins. The host rock was hand 'cobbed' to remove the veins, which were then smelted nearby in small bowl furnaces. Evidently, the furnaces lacked clay superstructures, since a simple pit was sufficient to smelt the almost pure malachite. The copper bloom was probably refined in villages further away.

The increasing transportation of solids by pipeline, in South Africa and internationally, replacing the conventional transportation methods of rail, road, and conveyors, has resulted in much research into this area of solids transportation. Pipeline wear continues to be an area of specific concern, since it constitutes a major cost during the life of a pipeline installation. Wear data from an accelerated wear test and actual pipeline tests are presented. Trends in the performance of the pipeline materials tested are discussed, and possible solutions to the problem of pipeline wear are presented.

SYNOPSIS This report outlines the development of a model to simulate the radiometric sorting of gold- and uranium-bearing ores. The developed program indicates the optimum mass, reject percentage, and expected reject gold and uranium grades for a radiometric sorter. It achieves this by statistical analysis of the data gathered from a large sample of rocks in the required size range for a particular mine. The program can be used in the optimization of existing sorters, as a design tool for new radiometric sorters, and in feasibility studies on radiometric sorting.

Probabilistic methods for assessing the reliability of engineering systems in mining are the way of the future. So agreed the delegates of a recent short course on the subject, entitled 'Reliability-based Approach in Mining engineering Design'. This was a very successful five-day technical course sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held at Mintek from 7th to 11th March, 1988. The main lecturer for the course was Milton E. Har, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the School for Civil Engineering of Purdue University, Indiana, USA. Professor Har was ably assisted by Dr Dirk van Zyl, a former student. Science quiz Teams of pupils from 37 schools within a radius of 12 kilometres of the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) competed in a science quiz held by Mintek at its headquarters in Randburg on Tuesday, June 7th, 1988.

Dr J. P. Hugo, Pr. Eng., after obtaining a B.Sc. (Eng.) in Metallurgical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1948, gained about 9 months' practical experience in a British steelworks, followed by post-graduate studies at Sheffield University, leading to a Ph.D. (Metallurgy) in 1953. Mr G. Y. Nisbet, Pr. Eng., holds a B.sc. (Min.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1948) and a P.M.D. from Harvard University, U.S.A. (1966). On graduating, he was awarded the Chamber of Mines' Gold Medal. Professor D. G. Krige, holds a D.Sc. (Eng.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1963) and a D.Ing. (H.C.) from the University of Pretoria (1981). Dr P. T. Wedepohl holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (1953) and a Ph.D. from the University of Reading, England (1958).

On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

Trends in PGM demand?The conference paper will cover a concise analysis of demand trends, which will include the major PGM end-use sectors (autocatalysis, jewellery, glass, petroleum, nitric acid, medical/dental) and will touch on the investment sector. Reference will be made to environmental legislation affecting global emission standards, trends in PGM loadings and the substitutability of platinum and palladium in this end-use sector. Observations will also be made on the jewellery sector, and the development of Chinese and Japanese demand. Trends in primary and secondary PGM supply?Similarly the paper will summarize historic and current global mine supply and primary production trends for PGMs, referencing recent expansions, their deliverability, and other projects coming on line. Consideration will be given to the grade and geology of PGMs worldwide and metallurgical developments. PGMs produced as by-products of base metal production and early PGM recycling estimates will also be appraised. In order to gain a wide-ranging appreciation of the industry?s long-term cost trends of producing virgin PGM metals, the paper will look at the cost and profit dynamics of global production on a regional basis (Western Bushveld, Eastern Bushveld, Northern Bushveld, Zimbabwe, USA, Canada and Russia). Extrapolating tomorrow?s PGM market and forecasting metal prices?Based on established industry trends and market practices Stephen Forrest will conclude by unveiling a variety of thought-provoking extrapolations of today?s and tomorrows platinum, palladium and rhodium markets to conference delegates. Importantly, having highlighted major developing PGM market trends in end-use (specifically on the elasticity of demand to high metal prices), primary and secondary PGM supply trends, in addition to presenting a carefully reasoned forecast of industry supply costs and margin trends, Stephen Forrest will conclude by estimating long-range PGM metal price trends. Other relevant market factors including industrial production, global currency rates and regional political factors will be deliberated.

In her wonderful book, 'The Guns of August', historian Barbara Tuchman tells us that the French war plan for 1914 was dedicated entirely to an offensive strategy, not a defensive one. Plan 17, as it was called, concentrated everything on a French advance to the Rhine, leaving the French left virtually unguarded. This strategy could only be justified by the fixed belief that the Germans could not deploy sufficient manpower to extend their invasion around through western Belgium and the low provinces; and this in turn was based on the belief that the Germans would never use reserve troops in the front line. Al evidence to the contrary was ignored. But when the war came, the Germans followed Count Von Schlieffen's plan; they did use reserves in the front line and they did come the long way around on the west. The result- as you know-was a protracted war, with fearful consequences for the rest of our century.
