The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

Automation in mining requires accurate maps of road networks on site. Because roads on open-cut mines are dynamic in nature and continuously changing, manually updating road maps is tedious and error-prone. This paper investigates the possibility of automatically deriving an accurate representation of the road network using GPS data available from haul trucks operating on site. We present an overview of approaches proposed in literature and test the performance of publicly available methods on GPS data collected from trucks operating on site. Based on shortcomings seen in all tested algorithms, a post-processing step is developed which geometrically analyses the created road map for artefacts typical of free-drive areas on mine sites and significantly improves the quality of the final road network graph.

Grains are subject to contamination by mycotoxins which are metabolic by-products of various fungi. The fungal infestations produce local concentrations of the mycotoxins thousands of times higher than the average. These facts make the sampling of the grain for assessment of the mean mycotoxin levels potentially very difficult. In the context of sampling theory, this morphology of the infestations creates a very high distributional and intrinsic heterogeneity of the grain shipment. The distributions of mycotoxin concentrations in seaborne shipments that exist at loading and the number and intensity of infestations that develop under shipping conditions are unknown. All grain shipments carry spores that may give rise to mycotoxin-producing colonies; moisture and temperature determine the final extent of the problem. This paper develops the value of the sampling constant with respect to intrinsic heterogeneity based on data on observed Ochratoxin A (OTA) concentrations in individual wheat kernels. A useful relationship between the distribution of mycotoxin concentrations on a kernel to kernel basis and the distribution of concentration over subsamples is developed.

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. On 8th August, 1973, 57 members of the Institute visited Prieska Copper Mine at Copperton in the North Western Cape. After tea, the group was welcomed by the Management of the Mine, and Mr Grobler, the General Manager, gave an introductory talk. After they had been taken on a bus tour of the property, the members split up into groups and proceeded underground or to the concentrator. Of special interest to the mining members were the rock-handling methods in use at the mine. The stoping method that has been adopted is the continuous, long-hole sub-level open stoping system. The broken ore is moved with rubbertyred front-end loaders from the stope drawpoints to the ore passes. On the main tramming levels, the ore is collected by electric locomotives and discharged into the main shaft system at the bottom. At the shaft ore-pass system, a gyratory crusher that can accept rocks up to 1 m in diameter has been installed. The crushed product (minus 150 mm in diameter) will then be hoisted by a Koepe winder, which has a rated capacity of 900 tons per hour. The mine is also served by a declined roadway from surface, which facilitates the movement of heavy equipment. The most striking aspect is the productivity that can be achieved by the use of a trackless-mining system. For the production of 230 000 tons per month, it is estimated that 6 stopers and 7 developers will be required. The total labour force will be approximately 2500-2000 Bantu, 200 Coloured, and 300 Europeans. Training of maintenance and operating personnel is of the utmost importance, and it was interesting to note the extent to which non-White labour is being used in these occupations. Lunch was served at the single quarters, after which the group proceeded to the airfield for the return trip to Johannesburg. On behalf of the visitors, Professor de V. Uniaxial tension tests were conducted on specimens of eleven granitic rocks which came from eastern Japan, and included a granite, four granodiorites, four tonalites and two gabbros. The axial and transversal deformability of these rocks was determined based on strain measurements using wire strain gauges. The experimental test results revealed that deformational properties of the rocks investigated varied depending on their petrographic features. However, the axial strain and the lateral strain characteristics showed a similar trend for all the rocks, i.e. the stress-strain curves were non-linear throughout the whole stress range from the initial point of loading to the point of ultimate failure. Moreover, the tangent Young's modulus and the ratio of the lateral strain to the axial strain decreased monotonously with the increasing of the axial stress. Still, the deformational properties were different for individual rocks in a quantitative sense. In particular, the difference in the lateral strains among different rocks was more distinct than that in the axial strains. For example, the Poisson's ratio at a stress level equal to 50% of the ultimate strength of a granodiorite was very low, close to zero. Furthermore, the Poisson's ratio of a tonalite was lower than that of a granodiorite, and assumed a negative value. This effect occurred because the lateral strain became positive as it changed from contraction at the initial stage of loading to extension at higher stress levels. There is no ready explanation for this phenomenon; it is believed, however, that it occurs due to microcracks pre-existing in rock materials and/or weak bonds between the adjacent mineral grains. Les essais de traction directe ont été conduits sur les échantillons de onze roches granitiques provenant de la région Est du Japon: un granit, quatre granodiorites, quatre tonalites et deux gabbros. Déformabilité axiale et transversale de ces roches s’était déterminée en utilisant des jauges extensométriques à fil. Les résultats obtenus à partir des essais montrent que la déformabilité des roches examinées varie selon leurs propriétés pétrographiques. Cependant, à partir des essais, une tendance semblable était observée dans les paramètres de la déformation axiale et la déformation latérale de toutes les roches; c'est-à-dire chaque courbe de contrainte-déformation était non-linéaire dans tout l'intervalle de contraintes à partir de l’état initial jusqu’à l’état d’une rupture finale au cours du chargement. De plus, le module tangent de Young et le rapport de la déformation latérale sur la déformation axiale a diminué de manière monotone avec l'augmentation de la contrainte axiale. Cependant, les différences quantitatives de propriétés de déformation sous traction étaient observées entre des roches individuelles. Particulièrement, la différence de déformations latérales était plus notable que celle-là de déformations axiales entre des roches différentes. Par exemple, le coéfficient de Poisson à un niveau de contrainte égal à 50 % de la résistance d'un granodiorite était très bas, près du zéro. En outre, le coéfficient de Poisson de la tonalite était inférieur que celui du granodiorite et a assumé une valeur négative. Cet effet est apporté parce que la déformation latérale est devenue positive en passant de la contraction dans l'étape de chargement initiale à l'extension sous les contraines plus hautes. Il n'y a aucune explication prête de ce phénomène; on prétend, cependant, qu'il est induit par des microfissures préexistantes dans des matériaux rocheux et/ou des joints faibles entre les grains minéraux adjacents. Einaxiale Zugversuche wurden auf Probestuecke von elf frischen, in Ostjapan vorkommenden, granitartigen Gesteinen durchgefuehrt, welche einen Granit, vier Granodiorite, vier Tonalite und zwei Gabbros umfassten. Die axiale und transversale Verformbarkeit von diesen Gesteinen wurde durch Verformungsmessungen mit Drahtdehnungsmessstreifen geklaert. Die experimentellen Versuchsergebnisse offenbarten, dass Verformbarkeitseigenschaften des untersuchten Gesteins in Abhaengigkeit von ihren petrographischen Eigenschaften variierten. Jedoch zeigten die axialen und die lateralen Spannungsdehnungslinien eine aehnliche Tendenz bei allen Gesteinen, d.h. die Verformungskurven waren nicht linear im ganzen Bereich vom Ausgangspunkt des Belastens bis zum Punkt des entgueltigen Bruchs. Ausserdem verringerten sich das tangentiale Elastizitaetsmodul und das Verhaeltnis der lateralen Verformung zur axialen Verformung monoton mit der Erhoehung der axialen Spannung. Dennoch waren die Verformbarkeitseigenschaften der einzelnen Gesteine in der quantitativen Wahrnehmung unterschiedlich. Insbesondere war der Unterschied bezueglich der lateralen Verformungen zwischen verschiedenen Gesteinen eindeutiger, als der in den axialen Verformungen. Z.B. war die Querkontraktionszahl auf einem Spannungsniveau, das 50% der Zugfestigkeit eines Granodiorits entspricht, sehr niedrig und nah an Null. Ausserdem war die Querkontraktionszahl eines Tonalits negativ und deshalb niedriger als die eines Granodiorits. Dieser Effekt trat auf, weil die laterale Verformung, als sie sich von der Kontraktion am Ausgangsstadium des Belastens bis hin zur Ausdehnung auf den hoeheren Spannungsniveaus aenderte, positiv wurde. Es gibt keine fertige Erklaerung fuer dieses Phaenomen; es wird jedoch angenommen, dass es wegen der Mikrorisse auftritt, die vorher im Gesteinsmaterial und/oder in den schwachen Bindungen zwischen den angrenzenden Mineralkoernern existieren.

RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. Gemaess der mehrfach regression analyse wurde eine neue RMR, die sich aus 5-eingeschraenkten faktoren wie intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence und roughness von discontinuities zusammensetzen, in vorsch- lag gebracht

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

Most structures are designed so that the possibility of failure is eliminated. However, some degree of failure in the rock around deep mine excavations is inevitable if mining operations are continued. The presence of failed rock constitutes a hazard the magnitude of which can be predicted by computer models from calculations of the energy change per unit area mined in stopes, or the field stress around service excavations. Empirical relationships between these calculable quantities and the incidence of rock failures and delays associated with them have been established. Experiments on the computer using different layouts enable the mining engineer to select the least hazardous of otherwise acceptable alternatives, and to predict the incidence of damage ahead of actual mining, so that appropriate measures to maintain an adequate degree of safety and productivity can be planned in advance.

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. Ainsi la génération du maillage d’une structure rocheuse ancrée devient plus simple ce qui est très important pour une optimisation du projet : en cas d’ajustement du nombre et de l’orientation des boulons, le maillage reste inchangé. La comparaison de résultats de calcul avec ceux obtenus par un code aux éléments finis conventionnel montre la robustesse de la méthode proposée. Auf der Grundlage der Verbund-Element-Methode (CEM) wird ein neues Modell für hohle Reibungsanker entwickelt, das den Fels, das Ankermaterial und die Kontaktfläche Fels / Anker umfasst. Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Modells ist die Möglichkeit, es in eine konventionelle FE-Analyse einzubetten. So wird die Netz-Generierung für verankerte Fels-Bauwerke einfacher, was für die Optimierung des Verankerungs-Projekts von Wichtigkeit ist: wenn Zahl und Orientierung der Anker variiert werden, bleibt das Netz unverändert. Der Vergleich von Rechenergebnissen mit solchen aus einer konventionellen FE-Rechnung zeigen die Robustheit der vorgestellten Methode.

The stress state on two slope profiles overlying an inclined surface with layer inclination of 50 and 150 are investigated. It is demonstrated that the induced stress state in an imbedded weak layer, exposed at the base of the slope, forms a zone of induced tensile vertical and horizontal stresses, which can lead to failure. The zone length depends on the slope angle and the angle of the inclined layers. L’état des contraintes sur deux profils en pente en superposition sur une surface inclinée avec une inclinaison de couche de 5o et 15o est étudié. L’étude présente démontre que l’état induit des contraintes dans une couche faible insérée, exposée au bas de la pente, forme une zone de contraintes de traction induites horizontales et verticales, qui peut amener à la rupture. La longueur de la zone dépend de l’angle de la pente et l’angle des couches inclinées. Die Druckvorkommnisse zweier Hangprofile auf einer schrägen Fläche mit einer Schichtneigung von 5º und 15º wurden untersucht. Es zeigte sich, dass die induzierten Druckvorkommnisse in einer eingebetteten schwachen Schicht, die am Hangfuße offen liegt, einen Gürtel induzierter vertikaler und horizontaler Zugkräfte bildet, die zum Zusammenbruch führen können. Die Gürtellänge ist von der Neigung des Hanges und der Neigung der schrägen Schichten abhängig.

Embankment dams are often constructed on soft rock foundations in Japan, so it is important to precisely predict deformation of the foundations due to fill placement at the design stage. In order to accurately evaluate the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction, the influence of the scattering of the deformability of foundations on the deformation behaviour should be investigated. In this paper, a method of evaluating the settlement and the strain of the rock foundation surface during construction was studied with stochastic deformation analysis considering the scattering of the deformability of the dam foundation. Based on the analytical results, a dam foundation design using the deterministic method considering the scattering of its deformability was discussed. Da in Japan Uferdämme of auf weichen Felsfundamenten gebaut werden, ist es wichtig, die Verformung der Fundamente auf Grund der Platzierung der Aufschüttungen bereits in der Planungsphase genau vorherzusagen. Im Zusammenhang mit einer genauen Beurteilung der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten sollte auch der Einfluss der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Fundamente auf das Verformverhalten untersucht werden. In der vorliegenden Studie wurde die Bewertungsmethode zur der Senkung sowie der Belastung der Felsfundamentoberfläche während der Bauarbeiten mit Hilfe von Wahrscheinlichkeitsanalysen der Verformung unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Streuung der Verformbarkeit der Dammfundamente untersucht. An Hand dieser analystischen Ergebnisse wurde das Design der Dammfundamente dann enthusiastisch mittels deterministischer Methoden hinsichtlich der Streuung der Verformbarkeit diskutiert. Comme les barrages en remblai sont souvent construits sur des fondations rocheuses tendres au Japon, il est essentiel de prévoir précisément les déformations des fondations causées par la mise en place du remblayage durant la phase de conception. Afin d’évaluer avec exactitude le tassement et la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction, l’effet de la dispersion de la déformabilité des fondations sur le comportement de déformation doit être étudié. Dans cette étude, l’auteur a étudié la méthode d’évaluation du tassement et de la déformation de la surface du rocher de fondation durant la construction en procédant à une analyse aléatoire/stochastique de la déformation et en prenant en considération la dispersion de la déformation des fondations du barrage. En se basant sur les résultats de l’analyse, la conception des fondations de barrage avec la méthode déterministe considérant la dispersion de sa déformabilité a été activement discutée.

Imagine being able to see all the future planned mining activities in real time. This is exactly what SIMS (Short Interval Management System) will enable you to do. SIMS is a real time short interval control system that continuously measures and sets optimised plans for mining production processes. The system utilises algorithm-based software that takes resources (people, equipment, tasks, and workplaces) and gives you the best achievable plan. The algorithm was developed using methods found in the field of metaheuristics. A metaheuristic is a strategy to designed to efficiently search for optimal or near optimal solutions to problems that are very complex computationally. (Glover, 1986) There are several algorithms that have been developed to solve optimisation problems which are difficult to solve using traditional techniques. This has given rise to a field called evolutionary computing. (Simon, 2013) Examples of these techniques are genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, and ant colony optimisation. These methods are used to solve problems in a variety of fields. As an example, Kok and Lane (2012) used particle swarm optimisation for equipment allocation in a mechanised underground mining environment. The first SIMS deployment took place in a platinum underground tabular mechanised mine near Burgersfort (province?) from 2017-2019. This included the development from a paper-based system to a fully operational online system. SIMS then moved to a second site and is currently being tested in a second platinum underground tabular mechanised mine in South Africa. Full deployment of the system is currently being phased in. SIMS was built in response to issues that have been plaguing the mining industry for years. These issues are all aligned into one major problem statement: how can we optimise mining production processes without compromising safety? This product was developed by combining years of mining experience with software development. SIMS is based on a four-pillar concept. Safety, productivity, accountability, and business improvement. SIMS uses a set of pre-configured mining and production rules, and with the resources that are available, to determine valid short term production plans. A background algorithm then determines the optimum plan to be executed. The system continuously produces a set of job cards that are pushed to respective operators on their allocated tablets. The management portal component allows you to view and manage all current and planned work on any connected device available. This allows real time visibility of completed, current, and planned work to operators, service departments and management, i.e., seeing into the future.

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid.

The Brucutu iron ore mine (Minas Gerais, Brazil), is Vale`s largest iron producing operation achieving around 21 million tons by flotation of iron ore pellet feed per annum. The run of mine is mainly composed of hematite (70%) and quartz (30%). After preparation (comminution and sizing), the slurry is submitted to reverse cationic flotation of quartz under basic conditions (pH=10.5). Corn starch (500g/t) is used to depress Fe-bearing minerals and alkyl (C10) ether amine is the collector for quartz. The flotation circuit is arranged in a “coarse” section utilizing dated 28m3 square Wemco cells, and a “fine” section utilizing modern 160m3 tank cells. The “coarse” flotation circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone underflow while the “fine” circuit treats material from the deslime cyclone overflow and the pulp product from the “coarse” circuit scavenger 2 bank. Evaluation of process performance is of high importance as even small gains can lead to large improvements for this high throughput plant. Cell-by-cell samples of the froth products, selected feed and pulp-products were analyzed for flow-rate, overall chemical composition, and particle size distribution. Bank-by-bank samples of the feed, froth and pulp products were analyzed on an assay-by-size basis. In addition, the flotation cells were hydrodynamically characterized and gas dispersion parameters assessed. The detailed experimental program resulted in a thorough characterization of the process and enough information to produce a calibrated floatability component model. Longer mainline residence time results in significant Fe2O3 losses while yielding little benefit in terms of SiO2 grade. Scavenger 2 has twice the residence time of scavenger 1 while having to treat only 10% of the SiO2; resulting in high Fe2O3 recoveries to the froth and poor separation. In addition, it is shown that the Fe2O3 exhibits true flotation behavior resulting in increased Fe2O3 losses. The detailed data collection campaign coupled with in depth data analysis and modelling gives unprecedented information and highlights avenues for optimization that was previously unknown. The West Wits Line first began yielding gold in the mid-1930s and is among South Africa's leading gold-producing areas. Gold mining operations are carried out amidst the occurrence of seismic events which cause both damage to underground excavations and injury and loss of life to production personnel. The feasibility of establishing a system to minotor the seismicity on all the Gold Fields mines was investigated during the early 1980s. This led to the establishment of a centralized seismic network in 1981. The system was structured around three major objectives. It uses Perkin Elmer (now Concurrent Computer Corporation) 16 and 32 bit mini-computers. The hardware in use at both the central and remote sites is outlined, giving a good insight into the role of computers in the system. The system software reveals the fast flow of data through the network; it can be divided into three categories: (1) data logging and transmission - remote sites, (2) data capture and communications - central site, (3) applications and research - central site. Several examples are given which show how the system is measuring up to its objectives. These case studies also indicate how the computers are effective in representing the seismic data collected. It is concluded that the use of computers enables the pin-pointing of seismic events on the West Wits Line within about 3 -4 minutes of their occurrence. The choice of hardware is largely dependent on the objectives of system, and the Gold Fields Network has chosen mini-computers because of the speed of communication and the large amount of data and storage required for research applications.
