Mining activity in the Segovia region in NE Colombia is the main source of employment in the local economy. This has created major problems of illegality and informality mining associated with a high social and environmental impact, as inefficient technologies are used and high consumption of toxic substances required in the process of gold recovery by amalgamation and cyanidation. In this work is presented mineralogical characterization of six local mills and studied beneficiation processes developed in them. With the results presented a proposed plant design that eliminates the use of mercury by replacing gravity concentration processes taking advantage of the characteristics of the treated material. Significant results were obtained regarding the recovery of precious metals and present a methodology that can be replicated in other mineral beneficiation plants that use gold amalgamation processes. This implies a significant reduction in mercury use and decreased risk of human contamination associated with this.

Australian underground coal mines predominately use the longwall method for coal extraction. In longwall mining at least two parallel roadways known as gateroads are mined to delineate the sides of the longwall block, a longwall installation face is then driven connecting the gateroads to enable the longwall mining equipment to be installed. Roadway development should ideally be ahead of the longwall so that the longwall equipment can be installed into the newly developed panel with minimal delay to coal production. A discrete event model of roadway development can help assess how a particular configuration may perform with high levels of variability and uncertainty in operations. One of the major delays associated with roadway development is caused by the shuttle car due to its cyclic stop-start nature. Shuttle car travelling paths and machine interactions are normally constraint by the mine?s roadway layout and mine safety issues. This paper presents simulations of shuttle car route options which can be considered at the design stage to minimize the cycle time of a shuttle car as part of a general roadway development simulation model developed using 3D Flexsim.

In 1992, 48 million tons of fly ash (not including bottom ash, boiler slag and FGD material) was produced in the United States, according to the American Coal Ash Association. Of this amount, 27.2% was utilized; although the percentage of fly ash utilized increased from 20% in 1980, there is significant potential to increase utilization. One of the primary driving forces behind increased utilization is increased disposal costs due to more stringent environmental controls and regulation. Fly ash is classified as a natural pozzolan and finds significant use as a cement additive. It has been found to increase the plasticity of the cement mixture while lowering the amount of mix water needed. In addition to improving leveling and finishing properties, fly ash improves pumpability as well as decreases the heat of hydration of the concrete mix which is particularly important in massive concrete structures such as dams where the concrete needs to cool as quickly as possible. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) of fly ash is an important quality when considering utilization. The LOI is primarily due to the presence of unburned carbon and the standard specifications for the use of fly ash as a mineral admixture in Portland cement concrete are given in ASTM C618-89a. which sets an LOI limit of 6%. However, many states have set a more stringent limit of 3%. The primary reason for the lower LOI specification is that carbon adsorbs air entraining agents which limits freeze-thaw resistance. This is particularly important in climates such as the midwestern US where multiple cycles of freezing and thawing are typical in winter.

A safe and precise mineral separation alternative to heavy liquids is being used for mineral sands exploration on large scale orebodies. The separation process, Magstream®, uses ferro-fluids and magnetic and centrifugal forces to produce precise split points over a range of specific gravities from 1.5 to 18.0 g/cc. This paper describes a commercial scale exploration program treating, roughly, 90 samples per day in Senegal (West Africa). Separation results comparing Magstream® and conventional heavy-liquid separation are presented.

A test section of the upper most lift and underlying lifts of a large scale copper heap leach operation was instrumented and monitored with advanced wireline geophysics, fiber optics and resistivity electrode arrays. Elemental Capture Spectroscopy (ESC) copper measurements, resistivity measurements from an Array Induction Tool (AIT), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) with fiber optics provided integrated near real time data about the performance of the heap. During the leaching cycle, ECS provided continuous vertical measurements of copper in the upper most and underlying lifts in the test section of the heap and was used to generate a copper recovery curve. ERT inversion modeling provided high resolution 3D resistivity measurements, which were used to evaluate moisture distribution. DTS measurements of temperature were used to track the PLS front and calculate velocity. AIT induction provided highly precise bulk resistivity measurements. In-situ samplers provided PLS chemistry at multiple points. Properly integrated monitoring data can provide the heap leach operator with information that can be used to evaluate the hydrodynamics and metallurgy of the leaching process in near real time. Problems in the heap, such as pooling, channeling, longer lag and breakthrough times, excess acid consumption, increased solution in inventory, toe saturation and slope stability can be detected in near real time with the in-situ measurements evaluated.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

Lithium-ion battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12V, 24V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicated that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

The pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota are the coarse-grained differentiates of the Harney Peak Granite. The Harney Peak Granite was intruded into the Pre-cambrian schist and quartzites and resulted in the Black Hills uplift. In the outer adzes of the granite intrusion occur the pegmatites. In the zoned pegmatites, representing the most highly differentiated portions of the parent magma, occur most of the minerals produced from pegmatites. These are of economic importance and they are the subject of this paper. The various mineral products will be taken up separately.

I appreciate this opportunity to discuss with you OPIC's new policies designed to assist U.S. minerals companies in developing new sources of minerals overseas. A comparison of recent figures on U.S. investment in mineral exploration, development and production gives results which are remarkable --and disturbing. Through the 1960's the flow of U.S. foreign direct investment in mining and smelting in the developed and less developed countries were nearly equal. However, by 1973, roughly 80% of all exploration expenditures by mining companies was taking place in the developed countries and principally in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Clearly it is to the interests of both the developing countries and the United States to put these figures back in better balance. As you may be aware, the administration as a whole is examining systematically what can be done by government to reduce the disincentives and increase the incentives to mineral investment in the less developed countries --the LDCs. A subgroup of the National Advisory Council chaired by the Treasury Department has been formed to coordinate U. S. Government policy and program efforts relating to mineral and energy development in these countries. Among other matters, this subgroup will examine how public policies could positively influence the private investment decision-making process in the minerals industry.

The development of process models and their application has proceeded more or less in step. Discoveries have been made in mineralized regions such as provinces and districts but generally without a comparably developed understanding of why provinces and ore bodies exist and, except in general terms, where ore deposits are within districts and regions. Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. After years of processing copper porphry ores, the Ray concentrator of Kennecott Minerals Company installed a concentrate regrind mill in its flotation circuit. The first cleaner concentrate is reground rather than the usual rougher concentrate. An additional cleaning of the reground product yields an increase in copper content of the final concentrate and a significantly lower insol content. The desired goal of decreasing the energy requirements for smelting the concentrate has been achieved.

The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilizing a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production ¥ill treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000 ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373 hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomize the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20 years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills, and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognized problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them, currently approximately 15m (48') overall diameter.

More than eighty years ago, in what we generally consider a more leisurely age, workers and engineers began the construction of the longest railroad tunnel in the world. When completed, the Simplon Tunnel ran more than twelve miles through the alps to connect Switzerland and Italy. Work began in 1898 and the tunnel was completed in 1905. In all it took about seven years to build one of the world's great tunnels. More than seven years ago, in what was hoped to be a rapid and constructive to the deaths of 38 workers in two spectacular tunnel disasters in 1971, the secretary of Labor's Construction Advisory Committee on Safety and Health began in January 1972 a search for an effective standard on tunnel safety. Much hard and useful work has been done, especially by the construction advisory committee' but more than seven years later, we still don't have a tunnel standard. We may speculate that, when the Simplon Tunnel was completed, workers and their bosses assembled to celebrate their achievement and to count their casualities. We have no need to speculate on the lack of achievement up to this time. An so far as I know, the bureaucrats have suffered no casualities except perhaps some unreported cases of ring-around-the-color. The only moral I can draw from all this is thai it is easier to penetrate solid rock than it is to get through bureaucratic fog. We can only hope that OSHA will finally take advantage of the work which was finished years ago and complete the actions necessary to give us a tunnel standard. Finely processed industrial minerals in "powdered" form have long been utilized by the plastics, paint, rubber, paper, ceramics, and adhesives industries as fillers, extenders, coatings and special additives. These minerals, primarily calcium carbonate, talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide, and the like, have provided economic, uniform and consistent base materials which have, in turn, been used by the referenced industries to manufacture quality products. The focus of this paper will be the development of equipment and systems at ABB Raymond for the dry processing of such non-metallic minerals in order to meet what have become increasingly stringent requirements of the producers of these minerals. Changes in these requirements seem to have been accelerating rapidly during the last ten years, and it is expected this process will continue into the 1990's.
